Stabilizing video?

Does anyone have a good way of batch stabilizing video shot with an iPhone? I've tried iMovie but the only way I can get the stabilization is to edit a movie together & export it.
My preference is to have a batch converter that analyzes & exports new files (or some way of stabilizing while I'm videoing in the first place).
I know that manually stabilizing each movie yields the best results, but time will prevent me from doing that and I'd be happy with a batch converter.

  • Stabilizing video that moves vertically

    Hi guys,
I am relatively new to Motion so apologies for anything obvious that I may have missed
I have a piece of video that I wish to stabilize in motion.
The piece of video is a rising shot where the camera starts behind an object which it is focused on, then as it moves up vertically it passes the top of the near object and focues on the background
The problem i am having is once I have analysed the motion of the clip, Motion takes the entire clip and moves it up vertically creating black space at the bottom of the clip
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Cheers
    Chris

  • Video zoomed in when stabilized

I have a project with shaking video that has been automatically stabilized. When I move a clip from the event window to the project window, the clip is zoomed in thereby cutting off the subject's head. How do I keep this from happening or is it a trade off for stabilized video.

Thank you for your response to this. I have been wracking my brain as to why my picture had zoomed in and convinced myself I must have done it in the first place. I am loving the MAC movie programs and after having my Mac for over a year am only just getting time to play with the fun stuff.
    Thank you.

  • Motion tile a video with an alpha channel

    Hi!
I'm trying to use the motion tile effect to fill transparent edges that are the result of stabilization with the prodad mercalli plugin. The problem is however that because the stabilization hasn't been done using keyframe movement in AE, it sees the transparent edges as part of the frame and applies the motion tile so that the transparent areas stay intact. In other words the motion tile effect doesn't see that the image is moving around because only the alpha channel is changing.
Is there any smart ways to solve this problem in AE so that I can apply the motion tile effect to get rid of the alpha transparency around the edges of the stabilized footage?
    Any help will be appreciated!

Hi and thank you for helping out!
Unfortunately I didn't get this to work with shift channels. I'm not sure what you meant by separating the components? I put shift channels on the videoclip and told it to use alpha from the video of the alpha.
Actually I'm a bit confused on why shift channels should help. The way I see it, the problem is that the "motion tile" effect is seeing the "whole" pixel dimension of the video that also includes the alpha channel and is applying itself to the whole frame instead of just the opaque area (the actual stabilized  video). Because of that the motion tile effect is tiling the whole frame, including the alpha of it which leaves transparent gaps between the two tiles.
Maybe there was a miscommunication between us or should I just try the shift channels effect again? If that's the case, then could you explain what you mean by separating components?
    Thank you very much!

  • Fuzzy video + fishbowl stablization in iMovie09:will FCE4 do better?

I got some strange pixelated like funky video and the fishbowl in imovie 09. I heard imported full HD size video in iMovie is the same quality in FCE4, but will the fishbowl effect when stabilizing video in iMovie09 be present in FCE4? if you see in the example on youtube(it's small so not as easy to see) behind the dudes head is a poster(days of the week) that looks kinda fuzzy and a bit pixelated..why??is it the camera?
anyways i'd like to know if these problems can be fixed with Final Cut Express 4?or if there's another way?................ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YQTadkxMCw

what you notice isn't called fishbowl (=but no bad either ) but Jelly-Effect, or, technical correct 'Rolling Shutter'.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_shutter
funny enough, the German wiki explains better and illustrated: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_Shutter
for this unwanted effect you don't have to blame any software, but the CMOS in your camera.. move your camera under low light fast => you'll notice Jelly, when playback directly from cam to TV!

  • Stabilizing

I am still try to finish post production in Premiere Elements 10 (an endless prcoess for me)  and I wanted to get this board's opinion on stabilization.  I purchased a great software program called Mercalli Easy Video Stabilizer 2.0 and I feel it does an amazing job at stabilizing video.  (we had to shoot  afew scenes without the tripod) On the down side , i noticed a small but definitely noticeable decrease in quality which I am guessing can be attributed to the folloing 3 reasons in varying degree:
    1.  It's not a plug-in so i ahve to export the section out of my project to add the stabilizing effect and then import the updated fil eback in
2  There are no specific output settings on mercalli, jst wmv and mpeg so I am saving to wmv, in order to maintain the hd, but i do not believe i am maintainig the full hd project settings of 1920x1080. Then tack on reason #1 and I am creating a second generation video with settigns that do not match.
    3.  It requires a zoomig effect to stabilize and I believe that zoom wil always decrease quality to soe extent?
Still, all an all, not a horrible decrease in quality so maybe it's a good tradeoff to get the superior stabilization effect.  I do not believe that I will get the same smoothing with the built-in adobe effect but I wanted to get a senee if people feel the quality of the video will be noticeably better after stabilizing within Adobe's effects.
    Thanks for your time!

That 1/2 wmv display related to a recent Windows Update kb has been a major thread topic.
Check out the Announcement at the top of this forum for the kb details. It should look like this
MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057.  Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files.  Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.
Also, see this Adobe KB Article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/wmv-files-corrupted-import-or.h tml
by Bill Hunt (Jul 12, 2013)
    Major helpful suggestions include....
    a. For now setting Windows Updates for notification and approval before any downloading and installing of them
    b. If you do catch the offending kb in Important Updates, right click it and select Hide. That is supposed to keep it from coming back
Please let us know if you have gotten rid of that problem kb as defined in the Announcement.
    Thanks.

  • Turn Off Video Camera Stabilizer?

After reviewing a video I'd recorded on my iPhone 4S, I noticed that the camera seemed to be stabilizing the video, since I had moved the camera around while recording.
If anyone has ever used the "stabilizing" feature when editing a video on YouTube, they notice how the new "stabilized" video has a somewhat choppy fluidity, because the feature is trying to balance out the movements of your camera. It sometimes, in my opinion, ends up looking worse before you tried to stabilize the video.
Anyhow, I noticed the same stabilizing-type feature when reviewing my video on the iPhone. Except, I didn't turn on any stabilizing feature and I'm wondering if iPhone video recorders are made with an auto-stabilizer. And if so, is it possible to turn off? And how?

    Hi jihanemo,
I'm not sure if the stabilization feature is an option that can be turned off. I've roughly checked my phones settings and saw no setting to disable it. Since I think the stabilization feature is part of the software within iOS, you might have better luck using a third party application from the app store that doesn't stabilize videos or images.
I hope this helps, if not please don't hesitate to ask! I don't mind

  • How to use Premiere Pro CS4 and AE together to stabilize a shaky video.

    Hello,
I know where to find and apply the stabilization tool in AE CS4, problem is I don't really understand compositions. I have a very very basic understanding of AE in general, more so the workflow and what some of the buttons here and there do.
Maybe this will be easier to answer.
I have my raw footage in Premiere Pro Cs4 right now, before I edit it I want to stabilize it. How to a connect PP and AE?
Will AE change the quality of my video? I need to keep it HD. I'm in a professional setting.
I do I take the stabilized video from AE and put it back into PP for further editing?
And finally, maybe this is redundant, but do I have to export out of AE or can I put the edited work back into PP for the rendering (exporting) process?
I can clarify on anything you need if I'm not making sense.
Thanks in advance for you the help!

The "Working with After Effects and Premiere Pro" page gives an overview of the ways to move data back and forth between Premiere Pro and After Effects, and it also includes links to a few basic video tutorials on the subject.
It sounds like you need to learn the basics of After Effects first. I suggest starting on this page.

  • When I apply smoothing to a clip, it does nothing and the video frame remains static! Please Help!

When I apply smoothing to a clip, it does nothing and the video frame remains static. As opposed to moving around in order to compensate for my movement, which exposes black edges. That is what I am trying to get. Please help
These are the steps I follow. Import clip > Library > Behaviours > Motion > Stabilize. I then add the stabilize > go to inspector and change method to smooth and finally, analyze. However, it is not doing anything. My Macbook Pro was recently replaced and this is what I recall doing on my previous one, but it doesnt seem to be working for me. Is there a step im missing or something?
    Thanks for any help!

Smooth is just going to smooth out a little "jitter" or jerkiness in the footage. Unless there is a lot of camera movement, you won't notice much. If you really want to see Motion go to work, change the Method to Stabilize.
BTW, once the footage is analyzed, you can make any changes you want to any of the other parameters - you don't have to re-analyze. I recommend Stabilize with Adjust: Position Scale and Rotation and Borders set to Zoom (depending on the quality of the video) — or you might consider adding a mask to the group the stabilized video is in

  • Is video stabilization on by default on the 4S?

I took a couple of handheld videos on my new 4S this morning and they seemed pretty jittery, even though I was standing still and moving the phone slowly. Is there something extra I need to do to make the new video stabilization work? Does it apply the stabilization only if you save the video back to iTunes or something?
    Drew

Exact same problem here. Pretty jittery, like stabilization is making matter worse, not better. I tested shell-to-shell with a friend's 4S and it became so horribly clear: my jitteriness compared to his smooth stabilized video. My first thought was: did I get a bad gyro?
Problem solved: System Restore! Seems smooth now, even after all apps and data is restored. Still smooth. I have the sample clips and I may post it on YouTube for others to see.

  • Can I get a fluid preview of stabilized shot ?

I'm replacing parts of videos in premiere timeline with version stabilized in AE, but in AE I can't see a fluid preview, is there a way to pre-render the stabilized video before going back to Premiere ?
Ram preview works only for the last few seconds, I need a complete real preview of the stabilized shot to shorten the workflow...
    Thanks

    Are you sure ?
    this page http://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereffects/cs/using/WSB108BC99-A69B-46c4-86D3-2192805C2AF8a. html says:
Important: The trial version of After Effects CS5 doesn't include some features that depend on third-party software components that are only included in the full version of After Effects. The import and export of some formats are not supported in the trial version: AVC-Intra, AVCHD, HDV, MPEG-2, MPEG-2 DVD, MPEG-2 Blu-ray, and XDCAM. The trial version for Adobe After Effects CS5.5 includes all codecs that are in the full version.

  • Troubles with stabilization in FCP X.

Hi, everybody. Recently, I bought FCP X, and I saw some YouTube tutorials about image stabilization. The results appeared amazing, but when I stabilized some videos (I tried this with and without analyzing stability during import) the image really result much more stable, but the frames begin to move as a way to mantain the image stable (initially, the original video had a moved image but a fixed frame; after stabilization, the image becomes stable, but the frame moves constantly). Between the moving frame and the edges of the screen, all is black, and when the camera turns up/down or left/right, the frame keeps following the prior objects, like if yo turn your head but keep your eyes fixed looking the previous images. In those moments, half of the screen appears black and in the other half you can see the video because the frame "moved" following the previous objects. Then, the frame returns to a "normal" position, but again moving constantly while the original images need to be stabilized. In the tutorials, the stabilized video showed no frames. Please tell me what's wrong with this or if I have to make other settings in order to avoid this moving black frame. I hope you understand me, because I'm a spanish speaker.

    @hafken
    I didn`t analyze during import.
If i try the way you wrote -> i delete the files in the folder"stabilization":
    1) do i have to check this little blue checkpoints (ON/OFF) on all clips i want to stabilize again? or are they still there and it works for itself in the backgroundrendering task?
    2) do i have to right click on the clip in the timeline and choose "Analyze and stabilize" ?
or do i have to set the blue checkpoint in the inspector window for each clip i want to stabilize again ?

  • 5 things which should be improved in the Warp Stabilizer

    1. Performance.
When stabilizing any footage I always ask myself: "What the heck is he doing there?!" not even a single core is really working hard. It looks like an idle background process  The GPU is idle as well, as the analysis pass is only run on the CPU.
This maybe okay if you still need much work to do in Premiere. But often, the next steps DEPEND on the stabilization and you have to WAIT and WAIT and WAIT...
It's just painful to imagine that, running a machine with 8 cores, more than 8 times the amount of video material COULD be analyzed.
The free Deshaker for Virtualdub actually uses more cores (even though not at 100%) but analyzes at about 20-21fps compared to the Warp Stabilizer at about 4-8fps.
Admitted, the Deshakers results aren't nearly as good (especially with rolling shutter, which can be configured though, but you don't always know the right percentage for the cam you're using).
This also applies to opening projects with much stabilization data. It opens... and opens... rarely any disk activity and rarely any CPU or GPU activity. Again: WHAT IS HE DOING THERE? Just waiting for the clock itself?! Or is he sending it all to the NSA? That at least would explain the unneccesary delay:P (just kidding!)
    2. Stabilization data.
For me, I wouldn't have any problem with storing it just inside a project folder or a separate file. Just add a checkbox into the plugin settings:
[x] Store stabilisation data in separate file/folder.
This may be then called [projectName].stabilization
Inside that folder, there will be maybe one file for every effect used in the project.
...or you can use the old way, if you don't have so much stabilization work to do.
    3. Small bugs.
When using "stabilize only", the resulting frame, at least in Premiere Pro, has a HUGE "DC offset" sometimes. This is a term from music producing, but exactly fits in here. You can clearly see it when there are still images that shouldn't receive much of stabilization. They're somtimes shifted far out of the viewing frame, leaving big black borders, so you have to manually adjust the frame position to fit back into a "neutral" position. This could be resolved to let the whole correcting curve undergo something like a "low pass filter" which will try to keep the resulting frame SOMEHOW centered.
In this image above, from a longer clip, there isn't much motion at all. But you can see how far the offset from the actual video frame is. I have to do this for almost every video, also after I change the "smoothness" setting.
    4. More control
I would LOVE to be able to disable "zoom detection", because it gives me lots of "Vertigo Effects" in many cases.
I heard this has been alredy addressed for CC.
    5. Improvements / new features
One thing I always do with every stabilized video:
Instead of synthesize edges, which takes AGES to render, I just do the following:
I place the same clip, unstabilized, behind the stabilized clip (stabilized, borders only) and give the stabilized clip softened borders with "rough edges". This even still renders fine on the GPU.
This would make a great option for the stabilizer. Just call it "overlay over original with blurred edges" or something like that.
This has worked extremely well for any stabilized footage so far and isn't nearly as disturbing as the synthesized edges.
I'm considering to join the Creative Cloud, because unless I do this I don't expect to see any improvements in my old and out-dated Premiere PRO CS6...

  • 5.1's Image Stabilizer

    G'day,
When using Image Stabilizer in FCP5.1, am I right in thinking that it's not just a matter of adding a keyframe at the beginning and end of the clip, and positioning the sample square in a suitably contrasty area (the same spot for both keyframes)?
Instead I need to go through the entire clip, adding keyframes as the sample square deviates away from the chosen selected area?
The instructions in the manual aren't exactly a step by step...  and I've just used the Motion tab's Centre option manually before to achive this result...
    cheers
    cosmic

well motion 4 (which comes with fcp7) does an incredible job of stabilizing video.  I recently had an edit rejected because the clients didn't like the hand held footage.  Not sure they understood what hand held footage looked like to begin with.  I took it into motion and made the material look like it was shot on a tripod.    And the edit was then accepted.
Motion 5 is available on the app store and might be worth investigating to stabilize your material.  It's only $ 50.00.  Just make sure your computer has the specs to run it.

  • IMovie "Finalizing a Project" timeframe

Just bought new IMAC. I went to "finalize" my first iMovie project (in preparation for burning it to a DVD) and it said it would take 28 HOURS to "convert into an HD 1080p". 28 hours?!! Did I do something wrong? - I only created about a 90 minutes worth of home video, pics and music. Is finalization time a function of content, length of movie or of adding various effects like stabilizing video, etc. I'm not even sure its okay to have my iMAC running for 28 hours.. THANKS!

I would suggest you make some shorter videos and get the feel for what it takes. There is really no reason to render your video in 1080p if you are making a DVD. A DVD is standard definition, so you are spending a lot of processor resources creating something that will ultimately be downscaled to 640x480 or 720x480.
I would suggest sharing your video to the Media Browser in the Large size (960x540). This will produce good results in iDVD at about 25% of the resource level.
Also, I would make a couple of short movies, say 5 to 10 minutes each, and test them out through your whole workflow before trying something at 90 minutes. 90 minutes is a very long movie for iMovie. It is long enough to be a feature film, and I would definitely recommend using Final Cut or Final Cut Express if you are making a feature film. iMovie is really designed for home video.
