Stable upgrades

Okey, here's the problem: An irritation I have had with archlinux, in fact the only real one, is that some part of the system crashes when I upgrade. Often it's some new version of a library that doesnt work with an older version, or a new bug is introduced. So what I'm asking is, can I upgrade my applications, but leave libraries and system files alone? I only want to upgrade the core files when a new release of archlinux is out so that I know they are stable.

Well, I had nothing to do, so here you go (name this short script 'findlastupdated.sh')
#!/bin/bash
tac /var/log/pacman.log | sed -n '0,/starting full system upgrade/s|^\[.* upgraded \(.*\) (\(.*\) -> .*)|/var/cache/pacman/pkg/\1-\2-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz|p'
That should print packages updated since last 'full system upgrade' with the full path (you need to change x86_64 to i686 if you use that architecture). If you want pacman to install all of those printed, just use
findlastupdated.sh | xargs pacman -U
EDIT: deleted one unnecessary sed call from the script

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

  • Advice needed for stable upgrades

I have just come over from Gentoo because of concern over the massive upgrades needed (xorg-7.1  needed 105 packages upgraded), and the instability of some of the upgrades. I thought Arch might be a better choice because of the rolling releases. But now I feel some of the uneasiness I had with Gentoo. I have had Arch up and running for about a month. There have been at least three kernel upgrades with more coming. Fortunately for me they went flawlessly, but that may not happen next time according to some of the posts I've read
I have an AMD FX2800 with an nvidia 6800GT graphics card. No hardware is being changed. The computer runs much faster than it did on Gentoo. Why should I risk the instability of upgrading the core programs: kernel26, nvidia, mkinitcpio, mkinitrd, klib*, grub, udev? My solution has been to enter these programs in IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf.
Am I going to create problems down the road?
I would appreciate any comments on my solution.

I have been in archlinux for years.
The latest upgrades within my computer in arch have performed excellently with no problems introduced.
Some of the problems presented to users with the latest kernels and udev are due to ID changes in the pata/sata area but are not major disruptions.
I must report that I do not have sata devices within my two computers, one has IDE hdd's and the other has no hdd's...runs on Larch boot into ram which is the system I post this from.
If a user modifies his system there is a risk when upgrading via pacman which cannot sync to the changes made.
The rolling relase system reduces the impact of upgrades which cause anomalies by more easily identifying the root cause to the few packages upgraded...rather than hundreds as you experienced in gentoo.
In short, it seems that the rolling release system has merits......no system is perfect....

  • Anyone had tested the Newer Technology MAXPower G4/7447A 1.6GHz upgrade?

    Hello.
Does anyone had any experience with the Newer Technology MAXPower G4/7447A 1.6GHz Processor Upgrade ?
    Is it good?
    Macjaime

    Hi-
The 7447 processor upgrades are good stable upgrades. The 7447 is fairly cool and efficient, and will boost overall performance.
The weak point of the processor upgrade (compared to the 7448) is the cache. It only has the L2, and it is only 512KB.
The OWC 7445 1.5ghz processor with the 2MB L3 cache would be a much stronger upgrade than the 1.6ghz 7447. Unless the 7447 is greater than 1.8ghz, the slower 7455 processor with bigger cache will be the better performer. This is especially true in video applications.

  • Xperia Live with Walkman on Android 4.0.4 (with screenies)

My Thoughts on Android 4.0.4 on Xperia Live with Walkman
    -Sleeker Font Style.
-Camera Shortcut right from the Lock Screen.
-Able to access the drop down notification bar even when locked.
-Music Player access right from the lock screen
    -New Owner Info Option display
-Face Unlock works great on Live with walkman.
-Awesome new themes. Xperia NXT Style! Although they are only wallpapers, not the live ones seen on 2012 devices. My favorite is Tourquoise (Did I spell that right?)
-The Performance Assistant will help you disable some of the apps that you dont need.
-There it is! Official Android 4.0.4. Ice Cream Sandwich. OH YEAHHHH!!!
-If you repeatedly tap on the Android Version Menu. This little Primitive Droid will surprise you. HEHE!!
-Oh, and there's also a new logo when you start up your phone : SONY ONLY not Sony Ericsson, and in its ever-so-recognizable font style. =P
-The Sony Ericsson Liquid Logo has also been changed to Walkman, with a bubbly and quirky animation.
-Ill try to post screenies if I can.
-Greatly Improved Android Browser. Seriously, It's WAAAAYYY smoother than the one in GB.
-The Browser runs smoother than GB.
-Websites with heavy flash content load smoothly. =D
-Saved Pages Option to view pages offline.
    - Only Android provides true multitasking capabilities.
    - Hold the Home Button and you will be taken to this new recent/running apps tab. Swipe to the right and that app is closed. =D!!!
    -Widget Preview.
    - A NEW Gallery aside from the Xperia Gallery. The new gallery provides edit options. Like Picsart or Instagram or Adobe Photoshop Express. So, if you want to save some precious memory, stick with the gallery editing options =D
-HD playback still smooth as ever. I don't know what the fuss is all about. =P
-Images look fine as they did in gingebread. It really depends on shooting situations.
-Captured 720p HD Videos doesn't lag for me. Play back is smooth. Same as in gingerbread.
-Maybe, People are just not used to the new interface, but with a little bit of tinkering, you should get used to it in no time. =P
-The New Camera Interface. It now includes a dedicated on screen camera button.
-Captured Photos Quality are the same as in Gingerbread.
-Captured 720p HD Videos run as smooth as in Gingerbread.
    - The New YouTube App interface.
    - The Lockscreen Music Player
    - There was a review about not seeing the clock due to the music player. Duhhh, you can see it at the upper right corner. =P
    - I love how the album art and the album name also appears. If you are like me who converts songs from youtube to mp3. A little app called Tune Wiki can help you edit its tags so you can enable infinity view. =D
-The New Dial Pad, which provides Smart Dialing.
-About the lagginess issue. It takes about 2-3 seconds to start. It depends on how many entries you have in your call log.
-There's a workaround on it though, access it through Contacts.
    - RAM usage feels the same for me. Good Job on this one Sony. =D
    - I was really worried about RAM ever since I read Sony's article about GB and ICS. They did well on optimizing this one.
    - My screenshot is not the best there is since I was syncing Facebook inside Xperia. But, normally it has about 180mb used and 160mb free.
    - New APPS installed. Some apps like Wisepilot for Xperia can now be moved to SD card, thereby freeing more phone memory.
    - My New Homescreen. It retains the very convenient four corner bubbles.
    - 5 Widget Panes
    - A New Google Search Widget
    - Walkman Player. I was expecting the music player from the NXT series. Hehe, but I guess this will have to do. =D
    - I've never seen the refresh music library option even in the GB walkman player. Through experience, everytime I add a music file it gets added in real time. No refresh required...
    - Oh, and also... I think the speaker is a tad bit louder than before. Like 20% louder. I noted no distortions
    - The orange lights work as usual.
    - Still no customizable equalizer. This is a walkman phone. It has to have superb music customization capabilities. =P
    - Battery usage for me remains the same like in GB.
-Monster Use/Heavy Gaming : 4 hours (HD games cracked for HVGA screens i.e. Asphalt 6 Adrenaline, Need for Speed, Shadowgun, Dead Space)  Although I doubt you could play that long due to the screen size and the cramps you may get from playing. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome anyone? Haha.
    -Internet Browsing : 6-8 hours
-Video Playback using Stock Player and YouTube App : 6-8 hours
-Video Playback using MX player : 4-6 hours (I use it for my .avi files)
    - I use Easy Battery Saver to Optimize battery performance.
In Super Mode it can last up to 24-36 hours with only texts and calls which I think is pretty impressive. I can go on 16 hour hospital shifts without worying about charging my phone.
In Normal Mode it can last 8-10 hours.
-It really depends on how you use your phone. I strongly believe it greatly varies with every user.
    - Don't believe posts that say it doesn't run as smooth as GB. IT RUNS AS SMOOTH AS GINGERBREAD. EVEN BETTER. =P
    - Sleeker new user interface.
    - All of my apps and games still run smoothly on ICS. I'll keep searching for bugs.
    - The ROBOTO font is awesome.
    - I find the interface more intuitive and streamlined than GB.
    - Lots of new features implemented. i.e. Smart Dialing, Face Unlock, Performance Assistant
    - Icons have been remodeled.
    - I also love how fluid it is now when it switches screen orientation. =D!!
    - No bugs for me whatsoever.
    - I miss the quirkiness of the GB user interface. Like the transparency of the messaging app. But I guess, I have to move on, change is for the better.
    - A SOLID AND STABLE UPGRADE. NOW MY XPERIA LIVE IS COMPLETE.
    Problems:
-Yes, the LED SMS notification doesn't work. But all other LEDs work. i.e. Yahoo Messenger, Incoming Calls, Twitter. I guess they may have overlooked this one. It's the only problem that I see. I find it livable still. Greater good for the greater number of people =P
-THANKS TO SONY!!! A huge step on the right direction.
    -KIMOZAVE - NOOBIE SMARTPHONE USER

hi kimozave, ur review seems to be full of praises for ICS, but I have gone through many threads on disadvantages of ICS, so very much confused if I should go with ICS update or not....
can you plz tell how was is experience on:
    1. Dial pad - I have read its laggy.
    2. The phone is having a hard time authenticating wifi connection when using WPA encryption.
    3. Thumbnails in the gallery does not match the original picture.
    4. Phone dies at 10% battery remaining.
    5. SIM card keeps ejecting
    6. Camera is more laggy and image quality is poorer
    Thanks,

  • Installing Leopard (10.5) onto iMac PPC G5 (10.4.11)

    Hello there,
I'm looking to upgrade my PowerPc G5 from tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.?
I'm a bit of a dunce with this kind of thing so was wondering if I could ask a few (probably very basic) questions regarding the upgrade!  They may sound a bit dumb so please bear with me...
    1. Is changing operating systems easy?
    2. I've been looking on ebay for a legit copy to buy but am confused as to which version to get.  There seems to be 10.5.1 all the way to 10.5.6.
If I get the earlier version, can I update it automatically / for free to the latest version of 10.5.6?  Or should I just buy 10.5.6?
    3. On ebay, there seems to be 2 different sorts of 'install' disks I can buy.  One can be bought for £10, the other type usually has a lot of bidders and goes for roughly £70 - but I'm confused as to what the difference is.
The one that goes for just £10 is described as 'APPLE Mac Computer Install / Restore DVD OSX Leopard 10.5' and comprises of 2 grey disks, kinda boring looking..
The one that goes for roughly £70 are 'Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard Retail SEALED NEW' and comprises of a far more swanky, branded, purple 'X' and comes officially boxed.
Could someone explain why the install / restore disks don't really sell for much money (and therefore, presumably, why they're not the ones I need to get if I want to upgrade to Leopard!)
I hope that all makes sense - any help is very much appreciated!
    Cheers
    iMac 2ghz PowerPC G5, 2GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.11, 20"

    1. Relatively easy. There are some preparatory things to do in order to provide a smooth transition and stable upgrade.
    2. Get the latest version you can find. If that's 10.5.6 then purchase it. Be sure you get only a retail package not discs with gray labels. Contact AppleCare to see if the still have copies of Leopard available. Apple sold it at $129.00 USD.
    3. Stay away from anything that claims to be a "universal" installer or has gray labels. These are OEM discs and only work with the Mac models from which they came. You want to purchase only sets where the discs have black labels with a large gray "X". These would be ones like "Retail SEALED NEW." These will be more expensive. I think the £70 would be typical for this item.
The other types of discs are cheap because they may be upgraders (only work with a prior version of OS X and lack any extras provided with the retail sets.)

  • Safari JavaScript bug I need to find/fix

I am a webmaster of a popular site and I really want to support the Safari users but currently do not own a Mac so I was hoping someone here can help me track down a bug in my JavaScript that only effects Safari users.
I checked my code with both old and new versions of Internet Explore and Firefox running under Windows XP and it works correctly. I have visitors telling me it is not correct under Safari, though again I cannot even verify this.
Here is a page with the possible Safari bug:
    http://www.onlineconversion.com/volume.htm
Enter 0.15 in the quantity field, choose "liter" on the left list box, and "ounce [US liquid]" on the right.
Here is the correct result you should get:
    0.15 liter = 5.072 103 384 ounce [US, liquid]
A Safari visitor of mine says he is getting 2.147 instead of the above. He says he is using version 1.2.4 of Safari
Again I have no access to a Mac so I do not know if the bug does exist, if it is only for certain units or all units, so if someone can check and let me know it would be a big help. If you could also track down the bug I would forever be your friend.

Here's the download page for Safari 2.0.1. (note the OS version in the 'System Requirements' box lower right).
Just for confirmation, you can see on the pages you linked to that the OS version there is limited to the 10.3 range.
FWIW this page is the location for the 1.3.1 update and you'll note that this is restricted to specifically OS 10.3.9 and is perhaps the latest version released for that operating system.
Here's the page where all these come from... (note the first two links)
Your page works fine for my 2.0.2 version as well so I'm certain this is a problem with outdated software and you should encourage the user to upgrade their Safari and see if that resolves the problem.
Why is the default download the old version and a bit of extra digging is needed to find the latest version?
I really don't know, but what I suspect is going on here is something along the lines of this:
There is no point in downloading the latest Safari if one doesn't have 10.4 and to have 10.4 you must buy it and therefore will own a copy of Safari v.2 (actually called 'Safari RSS' to further muddy the waters). At this point the 'minor' upgrade(s) are then easily available from 'Software Update' or with a bit of digging on their downloads page.
I'm assuming then that the older version is of less significance to them (piracy?) and is thus more widely available, or perhaps they have a policy to make older more established systems available as the default.
Of course, unlikely, but on the other hand this could all just be an admin mistake that hasn't been spotted yet...
EDIT: A thought just occurred to me: in both of these 'latest' updates they are both for very specific versions of their respective operating systems and as such Apple may prefer to direct users to the latest stable upgrades that are for the widest range of the relevant OS to avoid user problems. There's only two pathways for this - the page you referenced for 10.3, and by buying 10.4...
Still, a little more page linking and advice might have been useful...

  • When Leopard is working ....

I managed to do what so far has been a stable Upgrade to Leopard. I did a lot of reading beforehand, but how to do a successful install has been pretty well discussed on this forum.
For those of you who are having trouble, I understand. I've had trouble with other updates. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. Once you've got Leopard up and stable, it can make you more productive.
Walt Mossberg, technogeek for the the Wall Street Journal calls Leopard evolutionary rather than revolutionary. In a sense he's right; but in my opinion, it's the evolutionary step from ape to human.
Leopard is filled with surprises. Let me give you some real life examples:
Time Machine really works. This morning, I screwed up an important file. I had the original back in 30 seconds.
I have a friend who was using two monitors so as to cleanly keep open all his applications. Using Spaces, he's down to one monitor.
Cover flow, when you need it, is fantastic. I had to find some photos in a fairly large file. I was clueless about the file names. I found them in under a minute simply by looking at the folder with CoverFlow.
I use an application called Together, formerly called KIT. It is one of those apps that allows you to organize bits and pieces of stuff you always wanted to organize. The Leopard upgrade puts a small Tab on side so that you can just drop stuff into Together without ever going to the app. You just drag it to the tab. What's important is that because the tab is visible in all Spaces, it's always there.
Spotlight integration is great and very fast.
There is lots of other stuff. The surprises just keep coming. I trust that if you are having trouble, when you get Leopard working, you will like is as much as I do.
All told, I simply find myself much more productive. Have others had the same experience I have?

Sorry, I'll have to go with Faema1969 here. If I had known of the grief ahead of me, I would have stuck with Tiger - random crashes, essential stuff missing, etc.
I have a good quality Agfa scanner with Scanwise software - simplest yet most useable scanner software I have found - has worked happily with all previous versions of OS 9 and X. Agfa got out of scanners a while back so no updates. Now on Leopard, it just crashes! I've had to install the software and run it on my G4 Tower backup server to scan. This mean I can't take the scanner and laptop on the road any more to scan precious documents people don't want to lose sight of (I do a lot of this stuff!).
I use Appleworks to make software tutorials for teachers - still the fastest software to do this on. When I put together a 10 page tutorial the other day, which with screen dumps was 1.1 meg, when I turned it into a pdf (no pdf compression built in on Leopard anymore - Apple doesn't know why it was removed!) it created a file that was 75 megs!!! (what gives???) I could blitz this sort of stuff out in Tiger no problems. I had to transfer it across and do it on a Tiger machine! Produced a file of 445kbs in reasonable quality!
At the moment, I feel like I do when I have to work with Vista - the operating system is getting in the way. I'm telling people not to upgrade at the moment - what you get is not worth what you lose in my humble opinion.

  • Sounds like Snow Leopard is a major disaster

Reading all the reports about SL here on this forum and on other forums I get the idea that most people are having all sorts of problems with it. Overheating CPU's and all other kinds of weird behaviour. I received my SL in the the mail today but have decided to wait with the installation until there's a stable upgrade.
I'd rather keep on running nice and trouble free on Leopard 10.5.8

    I beg to differ.
I never upgraded an OS so fast with so few problems. In fact, the only problem I have is that I can't get a Canon MX860 printer to work over a network yet, it has to be connected via USB (all other printers are ok and work over the network).
The whole procedure took less than an hour per computer (obviously excluding the time necessary to do full backups).
I upgraded from xp to Vista in another life. The "upgrade" took me more than half a day. Many things did not work properly after the upgrade. It took me months to recover thereafter and the whole process was incredibly frustrating, not to mention the cost of changing some components and the inordinate amount of time wasted. I had been unhappy and tired of wasting my time with Windows for a long period and this incident was one of the key elements which prompted me to switch.

  • Wired Speeds v Wireless speeds HELP !

    Hi
I wonder if anyone technically proficent in these matters would be kind enough share the knowledge with me.
    History : I had option 1 =  Speeds were  3 up/ 37 down ( very stable)
    Upgraded to Option 2
Speeds promised upto 61 down, installed speeds dropped to 27 down max, got onto BT reset all (as I'd done myself many times) and its gone upto 40 down, t always slows back down after a couple of days ???
Also when reset i get 72 down when its  a wired connection, and 43 down when wireless connection even if the laptop is right next to router ?
How can a router lose 30 Mb between wired and wireless when laptop is next to router ??
I have also under BT instruction changed from channel 1 to channel 9 ..
My laptop is a relativly new (2010) Dell model and i assume it has all compatable network adaptors ?
Thats as much as i can tell you
    Any ideas
    Many Thamnks in advance
    Dave

Most sub standard routers transmit at maximum 54meg if they are not an N-draft router, which gives increased speeds and range. The only problem with wireless is that it's too unreliable and subject to interference from phones and other electrical equipment, Which in effect would slow down your connection speeds wirelessly.

  • Safari keeps crashing for me

I have gone through the forums trying to find an answer to this. Safari started crashing yesterday. Now, I can make it crash by just reloading a blogspot page (other things will do it too).
I have removed my plist and cleared my cache and icons. I am not sure what else to do.
I am posting my crash log. Maybe someone can figure out what is going on.

    Hi John
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Usually, something specific jumps out on these logs, however, in your case nothing "to my eyes" seems to say "this is it".
Try Safari in another user account and see if it crashes there. If it doesn't, then the problem would be related to a User Account, rather than being System-wide.
If it crashes, then the problem is system wide, which would require you to extract a fresh copy of Safari from your Installer DVD. Guidance for that process may be found here. Note, the reference thread mentions upgrade to 10.4.4 due to its dated nature. See below for reference to 10.4.6.
Specific to a User Account - If this is the case:
Given everything you have already done, move the Safari folder found in your User Library to the desktop, restart Safari and see if it is stable. If it is, move one item at a time from the original Safari folder into the newly created one, starting with your bookmarks file, restarting Safari each time. When Safari crashes you found the culprit.
Once this thing is resolved, consider moving to 10.4.6, which I consider more stable, plus I believe upgrades Safari to 2.0.3 (417.9.3).
For the upgrade, use the combined version rather than the delta or incremental one. I realize this is a one step upgrade, however the combined seems to create a more stable upgrade path. Here you'll find the combined update. "Repair permissions" using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder, after the installation is complete.
    Post back with results.
