Stale Database Connections in Production Environment - Oracle 9.0.4.1

Every so often we encounter stale database connections in our connection pools. To us, this should not happen, as the connections should be refreshed, if idle, every so often.
Please see the data-sources entry below for an example connection pool. They are all pretty much the same. We have a retry-interval and inactivity-timeout specified!
Are we missing something obvious.. Any help at all on this would be much appreciated as this is an ongoing issue in a real-time CRM type application currently running in Production.
Cheers in advance.

  • Does ODSI handle stale database connections?

    When a connection becomes stale, does ODSI automatically refresh it? Or is there any setting that needs to be done in console by which the weblogic server renews the connection when it goes stale?
    Edited by: user1055961 on Aug 20, 2010 1:28 AM

    Beyond stale database connections, there are any number of reason that a query might fail. For this reason, your client application should catch the exception and then determine if it should retry. This will permit any failure that could be recovered to be recovered. For instance, if one of your (clustered) ODSI servers becomes disconnected from the network, or goes down, a retry from the client would result in the query being sent to a different ODSI server.
    To answer your question directly - no, ODSI itself does not automatically retry on database or any other failures. Setting the underlying connection pool to "test on reserve" should handle that.

  • How to manage connections in production environment

    Hai
    We are using Statless Session beans which will call bean managed entity beans
    as a developer we completed the first phase of our project successful but when
    comming to the production environment they(Higher authoritites of the company)
    are asking abt the connection pools. Suppose if my wlserver5.1 has 100 hits per
    a second how many connection pools i need to put in the production envirornment
    and also is it the right way to increase the connectionpools depends upon the
    clients hits????. Can anybody help me regarding this It is very urgent for us.
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers Kiran Nallam

    Hi,
    It all depends on your infrastructure and what products you are using.
    In most cases dev/prod are on different servers and are separate installs, this is the route I would promote.
    Some clients do share an environment for dev/test but not all, not everybody is the same.

  • Database connection error ORA-01034 oracle not available

    Hi
    Can some one help me out from this probs. I have a oracle8.15 enterprize edition running on solaris 5.6. It's been running fine since few months from deffent clients. But today its giving ORA-01034 error when i try to connect to database from cliend side. I found that database is up and running and we can access it on server. But from client i am getting the above error. Oracle documentation shows " The operating system variable pointing to the instance is improperly defined".
    I would aprreciate if some body helps out of this problem.
    Thanks in advance
    K. Srinivas

    Hi,
    Oracle uses the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables to create a unique shared memory hash key for each instance.
    This problem can happen if your environment variables are set differently when the database is started compared to the user who is getting the error. The error indicates that the executable (sqlplus, svrmgrl) can't find the shared memory segment, which means that the ORACLE_HOME variable is not set correctly somewhere.

  • Can i use single database connection in a hole java application?

    can i use single database connection in a hole java application?.I have so many forms to use database connection.

    Theoretically you can. Not only theoretically. I've seen lots of application which only uses one database connection (they were using, oracle or mysql)
    The first reply given here assumed that the answer to
    your question depends only on the design of your
    application. That is not true.Yes it's true. Nothing in the original questions says that you aren't allowed to open or close the single connection that you have. It's looks more like the OP is interested in sharing a connection (i.e having a singleton or a connection pool with only one connection)
    It does also depend on the behaviour of the database
    in the background.
    Most databases have a time out for connections that
    are idle Not a problem. Most implementations of connection pools and applications which keeps a connection open have a timer which calls e.g. select * from dual (if you are using oracle) when the connection has been idle for X minutes.
    (some, like db2 on z/OS, even cancel
    connections, that are not idle, if they are open a
    certain amount of time or have reached a given limit
    of cpu seconds.)You would also have that problem if you had a connection pool with several connections.
    In essence: If you have no control over the time
    your application runs (and therefore your connection
    is open) or over type or the configuration of the
    database you are accessing, you can't do it.See above.
    The closest thing to what you want would be using
    PooledConnections, iif those are supported for the
    database you want to access.Not true.

  • How to create database connection using DB2Driver in JDeveloper 10.1.2.1.0?

    I am trying to create a JDeveloper/Data Connection using com.oracle.ias.jdbc.db2.DB2Driver. The driver is registered from a User Libraries: DataDirect JDBC. I have the following class path for the library:
    E:\DataDirect\3.4\lib\YMdb2.jar;E:\DataDirect\3.4\lib\YMbase.jar;E:\DataDirect\3.4\lib\YMutil.jar
    I have no trouble configuring the connection but when I test it and I got ‘No suitable driver Vendor code 0’. What’s wrong? I have successfully created several database connections using Oracle thin driver. This is first time I am using a third party driver. Has any one successfully create a database connection using the com.oracle.ias.jdbc.db2.DB2Driver?

    Hi
    Since the error points to the unavailability of the driver class,can you double check your library claspath entries again.
    I just tried a DB2 connection using the following properties and the connection went through fine:
    Driver class name: com.oracle.ias.jdbc.db2.DB2Driver
    URL: jdbc:merant:db2://<host_name>:50000;DatabaseName=SAMPLE

  • Stale pool connections on Linux

  • Production environment with   Oracle Database XE.

    Hello, let me know which group members using Oracle Database XE in a production environment:
    - Description of the business.
    - Type environment: (Web, intranet or desktop).
    - Programming language used.
    - Performance.
    Roberto.

    We are using Oracle XE as point of sale backends.
    Overall architecture:
    - Cashier interacts with HTML GUI running in web browser in kiosk mode.
    - GUI written in PHP served locally by Apache on point of sale unit.
    - point of sale core logic is written in PL/SQL as packages in Oracle XE DB.
    - currently, DBMS_JOB runs every 5 minutes to synchronize (push sales, pull data) with inventory server. (want to change to AQs so complete transactions are pushed in real time)
    - sales reports, etc run from main Oracle Standard One Edition inventory DB.
    Since each point of sale needs to run IE, Apache and Oracle XE we've found that 1GB of RAM is minimum that we can get away with and still have the system running well (cashier should never have to wait for anything; pressing any button on the GUI should react instantly even though it is IE making a local page request, Apache running a PHP module to serve the request, and calling PL/SQL to do the actual data change in the DB).
    We've had XE go corrupt (strange errors, bad indexes, etc.) on us several times over the past 2 years. Fortunately in our case, we've never lost any data since sales are pushed to the main server which is backed up. Then, anything in the local XE database is expendable as we can rebuild it and pull back all information from the server. I've tried rebuilding indexes and such rather than completely rebuilding the database but have had no success (fixes for a few hours or a day but ultimately, the database continues to experience problems until the computer is rebuilt).

  • Crystal Report Viewer Not Releasing Oracle Database Connections

    I have a very simple vb.net 3.5 web application that uses the Crystal Report viewer 2008 to open a report. My requirements are as follows:
    1. Reports are built by another company and provided to us and used in a web environment
    2. All reports contain parameter fields
    3. The web application must be generic enough that a report can be added to a list and the user simply selects the report and provides database login information. The Crystal report viewer with handle the request for parameter values and prompt the user for their values.
    4. All reports connect to an Oracle 10g server.
    The above requirements have been meet and we have an extremely simple web application that runs the reports. It is working very well other than the crystal report viewer is not releasing the database connections. This is bad because the credentials are on a per user basis and that same user must login to a different oracle application simultaneously. They are being denied access because the credentials are already in use. We do not have control nor influence over the policies in use on the Oracle server. Ideally we would like to control the Crystal Report viewer so that it closes connections after use.
    The web application code is:
    Private Sub viewReports_Init(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Init
    If Not IsPostBack Then
    ConfigureCrystalReport()
    End If
    End Sub
    Private Sub ConfigureCrystalReport()
    'Load the Crystal Report viewer with a report.
    Try
    Dim reportPath As String = Server.MapPath(Session("reportname"))
    crViewer.ReportSource = reportPath
    Catch ex As Exception
    Response.Write(Server.MapPath(Session("reportname")) & "
    " & ex.Message.ToString & "
    " & ex.StackTrace.ToString)
    End Try
    End Sub
    Can anyone shed some light on this topic? Thank you

    Hello, Timothy;
    By default, having the report in session will hold it open for 20 minutes.
    If you create the report as a ReportDocument object you can take it out of session and release it more efficiently. That will release the connection.
        Private Sub ConfigureCrystalReports()
            If (Session("hierarchicalGroupingReport") Is Nothing) Then
                hierarchicalGroupingReport = New ReportDocument()
                hierarchicalGroupingReport.Load(Server.MapPath("Hierarchical Grouping.rpt"))
                Session("hierarchicalGroupingReport") = hierarchicalGroupingReport
            Else
                hierarchicalGroupingReport = CType(Session("hierarchicalGroupingReport"), ReportDocument)
            End If
            myCrystalReportViewer.ReportSource = hierarchicalGroupingReport
        End Sub
    In the Form Unload of the Viewer:
                'Take the report out of session
                Session("hierarchicalGroupingReport")  = Nothing
                Session.Contents.Remove("hierarchicalGroupingReport")
                'Clean up the ReportDocument object
                hierarchicalGroupingReport.Close
                hierarchicalGroupingReport.Dispose()
                hierarchicalGroupingReport = Nothing
                GC.Collect()

    You should confirm that you can connect to the DB with a simple Java class using the url that the code you posted is using.
    This will show that the OCI client is installed and executing properly. If you can't connect externally you will need to fix that first.
    Is the Oracle client installed on the same machine the JDBC code is running on?

    Hi,
    Did you start the SOA suite on your workstation?
    If so, can you reach the BPEL Console
    if so, check via Enterprise Manager the connect string in the OC4J instance of BPEL (oc4j_soa -> administartion -> JDBC > conenctions, or data-sources.xml)
    Copy the connect string into your OLite config if it works

    We are developing a Banking application using Struts & EJB, & I need to use Oracle 9 as a database. Could anyone please let me know, the professional way of connecting this application to the oracle database using Struts and EJB. A good example will help me a lot, so please give me example code also.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hello,
    For keeping the standby database on same HOST....it does seems to be great...i must be on separate box....may be on different network...i believe you would be using it for some failiover purpose...Isn't it.
    For Unix it is quite easy..you may implement like this...The Issue which you are referring may be because of wrong Oracle Home or SID....(i'm not very much sure..) You may try following steps:
    1. Create a separate Unix A/c and set ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID relevant to your StandBy Database. I believe the Home would be same whereas SID would be your standby databse.
    2. Take a Cold Backup of All your database files from Production.
    3. Copy these files on separate mount points for standby Db. Put them all to relevant directory and be sure to set the Group of all these files as "SYSDBA" This is Must.
    4. And then modify your INIT.ORA file i.e. InitSID.ora file accordingly and put the file in ORACLE_HOME
    5. Login to Newly created Unix A/c. Check whether ORACLE_SID is set ot not to your standby database instance.
    6. Login to sys as sysdba and start up the database. It will by default would try to check & do for your relevant Oracle SID for this profile...

  • While creating MViews in oracle 9i database connecting to table in an orac

    Hi all,.
    While creating MViews in oracle 9i database connecting to table in an oracle 11g database....
    Eg : create materilized view testmview as select * from testtable@db_linkname
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
    any idea
    Regards,
    Shiju

    There would be a trace file written on the 11g database server. Please review the trace file.
    Your 9.2 environment must be running 9.2.0.4 or higher. The 9.2.0.4 is the minimum patchset level required for it to be supported connecting to an 11g (11.1 or 11.2) database.

    Hi, we need to create the test environment from our production for oracle AP Imaging. we have soa,ipm,ucm and capture managed servers in our weblogic..
    Can anyone tell me what is the best way to cloning the application from different environment, the test and production are in different physical server.
    Can I just tar the weblogic file system and untar it to the new server and make the necessary changes?
    Can anyone share their experiences and how to with me?
    Thank in advance.
    Katherine

    Hi Katherine,
    yes and no . You need as well weblogic + soa files as the database schemas (soa_infra, mds...).

  • Report in production prompts for database connection info

    Hi,
    I'm using SAP Crystal Reports version for VS 2010 SP1. I'm trying to implement the most basic need--to create reports in a development environment and move them to production by just copying the .rpt files. I want to rely on the database connection string from web.config, but don't see how that is done. I've tried using ADO.NET DataSets from Project Data and can get the report to run while developing, but when I move to another server I'm always prompted with the "The report you requested requires further information" dialog.
    I tried this solution, which keeps the db server name in a web.config variable:
               ReportDocument boReportDocument = new ReportDocument();
                boReportDocument.Load(Server.MapPath(rmCR.SelectedItem.Value.ToString()));
                ConnectionInfo boConnectionInfo = new ConnectionInfo();
                boConnectionInfo.ServerName = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["dbServerName"];
                boConnectionInfo.DatabaseName = "dbCMRP_Employees";
                boConnectionInfo.IntegratedSecurity = true;
                ModifyConnectionInfo(boReportDocument.Database, boConnectionInfo);
                // Modify the ConnectionInfo for all tables in all subreports
                foreach (ReportDocument boSubreport in boReportDocument.Subreports)
                    ModifyConnectionInfo(boSubreport.Database, boConnectionInfo);
                Session.Add("Report", boReportDocument);
                Response.Redirect("CrystalReportsViewer.aspx");
    and this works fine in development, but when moved to a different server I get the "The report you requested requires further information" dialog. I've made sure that the db has the correct security settings, but can't find anything missing.
    I'm sure I'm missing something basic, but can't seem to find any solution after searching for days. Any solution that allows me to create the report in VS 2010 and copy to a production server will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Thanks for your replies.
    I think I've done what's outlined in the Troubleshooting Guide link that Ludek gave me.  I did install Process Monitor and found the "Access Denied" entry, but I'm not sure which folder needs permission given to IIS APPPOOL\ASP.NET v4.0.
