Start schema in relational database vs OLAP
I understand what OLAP and MOLAP are and their purpose in theory. Under what scenarios would one consider switching from start schemas in relational database to OLAP technology and building cubes? I understand this is more frequent in financial departments. Can one expand more about the usage? I understand it improves performance, but you can get pretty good performance by having star schemas in relational databses right?
And to move to OLAP technology, can you elaborate how it would be? Would I still populate the star schemas in relational databases and create cubes from there? Do you use an ETL tool for this?
If I have OLAP technology in our financial department, would I build a data warehouse in the same server?
Yes the tables are automatically created and populated at the point of configuration.
Cheers

Insert XML file into Relational database model without using XMLTYPE tables
Dear all,
How can I store a known complex XML file into an existing relational database WITHOUT using xmltypes in the database ?
I read the article on DBMS_XMLSTORE. DBMS_XMLSTORE indeed partially bridges the gap between XML and RDBMS to a certain extent, namely for simply structured XML (canonical structure) and simple tables.
However, when the XML structure will become arbitrary and rapidly evolving, surely there must be a way to map XML to a relational model more flexibly.
We work in a java/Oracle10 environment that receives very large XML documents from an independent data management source. These files comply with an XML schema. That is all we know. Still, all these data must be inserted/updated daily in an existing relational model. Quite an assignment isn't it ?
The database does and will not contain XMLTYPES, only plain RDBMS tables.
Are you aware of a framework/product or tool to do what DBMS_XMLSTORE does but with any format of XML file ? If not, I am doomed.
Constraints : Input via XML files defined by third party
Storage : relational database model with hundreds of tables and thousands of existing queries that can not be touched. The model must not be altered.
Target : get this XML into the database on a daily basis via an automated process.
Cheers.
Luc.Luc,
your Doomed !
If you would try something like DBMS_XMLSTORE, you probably would be into serious performance problems in your case, very fast, and it would be very difficult to manage.
If you would use a little bit of XMLType stuff, you would be able to shred the data into the relational model very fast and controlable. Take it from me, I am one of those old geezers like Mr. Tom Kyte way beyond 40 years (still joking). No seriously. I started out as a classical PL/SQL, Forms Guy that switched after two years to become a "DBA 1.0" and Mr Codd and Mr Date were for years my biggest hero's. I have the utmost respect for Mr. Tom Kyte for all his efforts for bringing the concepts manual into the development world. Just to name some off the names that influenced me. But you will have to work with UNSTRUCTURED data (as Mr Date would call it). 80% of the data out there exists off it. Stuff like XMLTABLE and XML VIEWs bridge the gap between that unstructured world and the relational world. It is very doable to drag and drop an XML file into the XMLDB database into a XMLtype table and or for instance via FTP. From that point on it is in the database. From there you could move into relational tables via XMLTABLE methods or XML Views.
You could see the described method as a filtering option so XML can be transformed into relational data. If you don't want any XML in your current database, then create an small Oracle database with XML DB installed (if doable 11.1.0.7 regarding the best performance --> all the new fast optimizer stuff etc). Use that database as a staging area that does all the XML shredding for you into relational components and ship the end result via database links and or materialized views or other probably known methodes into your relational database that isn't allowed to have XMLType.
This way you would keep your realtional Oracle database clean and have the Oracle XML DB staging database do all the filtering and shredding into relational components.
Throwing the XML DB option out off the window beforehand would be like replacing your Mercedes with a bicycle. With both you will be able to travel the distance from Paris to Rome, but it will take you a hell of lot longer.

Problems with creating SH Schema in exists Database 10.2.0.2
Hello ALL
I have problem with installation SH Demo Schema in exists Oracle Database 10.2.0.2 Enterprise Edition on Windows 2003 EE SP1
First I could try to configure my DB in Oracle Confuguration Assistant but I couldn't to add examles schemas there.
Then I installed Companion 10.2.0.1 with examples schemas in $ORACLE_HOME Database 10.2.0.2 and executed script sh_main.sql under SYS user.
After all SH Schema created in our DB but data exists in only two tables such as COSTS and SALES_TRANSACTIONS_EXT.
I haven't any more data in others tables.
In my log files I see follow :
SQL*Loader-500: Unable to open file (D:\oracle\DB_BI\demo\schema\sales_historydmsal_v3.ctl)
SQL*Loader-553: file not found
SQL*Loader-509: System error: The system cannot find the file specified.
SQL*Loader-500: Unable to open file (D:\oracle\DB_BI\demo\schema\sales_historydem_v3.ctl)
SQL*Loader-553: file not found
SQL*Loader-509: System error: The system cannot find the file specified.
SQL*Loader-500: Unable to open file (D:\oracle\DB_BI\demo\schema\sales_historysale_v3.ctl)
SQL*Loader-553: file not found
SQL*Loader-509: System error: The system cannot find the file specified.
and etc.
Please help me to install SH Schema in exists DB may be anybody resolved this issue. The document you are refering to is OK, but it assumes you already have installed the demo files.
In order for the demo to be installed and working, some requirements must be met.
You must have installed DB10g Enterprise Edition, as demos such as SH require the partitioning option, available only on E.E.
Start a second installation from the companion disk, start your oracle installer, select Database Products, verify the Oracle Home details are the same as those of your Oracle Home, confirm the action and install.
At the end of the installation you must see these directories at the $ORACLE_HOME/demo/schema directory:
bus_intelligence mk_dir.sql.ouibak mkunplug.sql sales_history
human_resources mk_dir.sql.ouibak.1 mkverify.sql shipping
info_exchange mkplug.sql order_entry sted_mkplug.sql.dbl

How to view tables in another schema in the database
I am starting to use the SQl Developer 1.5.
We can connect to an oracle database successfully, expanding the tables, it shows the list of tables of one schema.
We have other schema in the database. In the query panel, when we type in the name of the other schema such as tcs. then some table names will popup in the intellisense.
How can we show the list tables in other schema within the same database. In SQL Developer left panel, there's a browse tree. There's a 'Other Users' branch under each database, expand that you will see all the option to check user's objects. Your user need to have check dictionary privilege

The error below makes absolutely no sense! I'm using Enterprise Core...yet I'm being told I can't use remote data sources:
w3wp!library!8!03/05/2015-19:08:48:: i INFO: Catalog SQL Server Edition = EnterpriseCore
w3wp!library!8!03/05/2015-19:08:48:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.OperationNotSupportedException: , Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.OperationNotSupportedException: The feature: "The edition of Reporting
Services that you are using requires that you use local SQL Server relational databases for report data sources and the report server database." is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services.;
Really? This totally contradicts the documentation found here:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157285(v=sql.110).aspx
That article says remote connections are completely supported.
ARGH! Why does this have to be so difficult to setup?!?Hi jeffoliver1000,
According to your description, you are using Enterprise Core edition and you are prompted that you can’t use remote data sources.
In your scenario, we neither ignore your point nor be doubt with what you say. But actually we have met the case before that even though the SQL Server engine is Enterprise but the reporting services is still standard. So I would recommend you to find the
actual edition of reporting services you are using. You can find Reporting Services starting SKU in the Reporting Service logs ( default location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\<instance name>\Reporting Services\LogFiles). For more information,
please refer to the similar thread below:

By the way, have you installed the other SQL Server edition before?

How to retrieve Outline Into Relational Database??
sir i have installed Hyperion and SQL server 2008 On my system ..
I am working on ETL process .
I have OUTLINE DATABASE OTL FILE that i have to retrieve in RELATIONAL DATABASE MDF FILE...
so how can I do this??
thanking you for view this question and giving me answer...Hi,
Depends on what products you are willing to use, personally I would use ODI to extract the outline information and then load into a table, another option would be use the applied olap outline extractor (which is free) or you could use one of the APIs and write the code to extract and load.
Cheers

Hi,
Can you please let me know when is the tables are actually created within the SCHEMA( Shared services or EAS ) in the relational database. Is it during the EPM configuration that the tables are created in the database automatically?
Appreciate your input and thanks for your time.
Thanks,
HariYes the tables are automatically created and populated at the point of configuration.

Where is HR schema in 10g Database?
Dear all!
When I completed installation of Oracle Database 10g successfully, I found that the HR schema did not exist in Database. I tried to find that by logging in Sys schema to check it one again:
SQL> Select username, account_status From dba_users;
However, I did not find HR schema in my Database. Put the original installation CD in CD-ROM, I tried to check if it was not setup, but I could not.
Why do I find it and how do I setup additionally the HR schema?
Thank a lot!Thank you all, especially "burleson". According to your guide web site, I found that some script (hr_cre.sql) need to run to create samples schema. However, this is first time I started with DB 10g but I often used Oracle 9i before, so that, I did not find where are these scripts? Are there in Oracle CD-Rom or in somewhere, not in Oracle\OraHome\Admin\Database?
Thank you very much! -
VLD-1124: Schema and/or Database link physical configuration parameters
Hi!
The warning message:
VLD-1124: Schema and/or Database link physical configuration parameters should not be set for Table1.
Is it possible to eliminate this warning message ? Anyway , Thanks for your response!
Bye!Hi guys,
I am facing a strange problem. The code generated for my mapping has NOT used the dblinks. My OWB version is 10.1.0.4
This is my problem in brief.
I have installed OWB newly and started to do a sample task. I created a very simple one to one table population mapping from source to the target schema. Both are in the same database.
When i generated the code for the mapping, it gave a warning 'VLD-2771: System privileges may not allow extraction from source EMP'.
When i checked the code which was generated, i couldnot see any dblinks associated with my source table( which seems strange)
CURSOR "INGRP_c" IS
SELECT
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."EMPNO" "EMPNO",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."ENAME" "ENAME",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."JOB" "JOB",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."MGR" "MGR",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."HIREDATE" "HIREDATE",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."SAL" "SAL",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."COMM" "COMM",
"DEPT_SRC_TRG_CONN"."DEPTNO" "DEPTNO_1",
"DEPT_SRC_TRG_CONN"."DNAME" "DNAME",
"EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN"."DEPTNO" "DEPTNO",
"DEPT_SRC_TRG_CONN"."LOC" "LOC"
FROM "SCOTT"."EMP" "EMP_SRC_TRG_CONN" ;
In brief this is the process i have done.
Source schema : SCOTT & Target schema : TRG_SCHEMA
1) I have created source (for SCOTT) and target(for TRG_SCHEMA) modules.
2) I have also created DBLinks, Locations and Connector from source to the target locations.
3) I registered both the source location and target locations.
4) Validated, Generated and Deployed the Connector from source to the target.
I was unable to trace the error. Did i miss anything in the configuration? or during the installation of OWB.
Though it is a very old post, i hope someone can help me out here.
Thanks in Advance,
Sri -
An introductory text/book on relational databases
Anyone have any suggestions for a good introductory text on relational databases? This is research for an article. I'll read it before suggesting it, of course. There are so many books out there, that I thought I'd ask you guys for opinions. Thank you!
You can start with

Web Analysis Report prompted for relational database login
We have given access to the WA reports and everything works fine in general. One of the user trying to open same report(s) document(s) via Workspace and its getting prompted with relational database login? I have verified for the access and everything seems to be fine.
I do not know the reason for this. Can anyone help me? Thanks. From the forums, i got the below MAXL commands to sync the user access :
alter system resync sss; --> this command will sync all the users, groups.
alter group <group name> sync security with all application; --> This can be used to individually sync the required group
alter user <user name> sync security with all application; --> This can be used to individually sync the required user
Will check it up with user on any change in her access.
Thanks,
Praveen. -
I don't know if this is the right section but I experience the following issue with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed on Windows 8.1. When I start Acrobat the related window opens normally but, after some scroll up and down along the document, it blocks, Acrobat doesn't respond to any command I can give and, in place of the pointer arrow, a vertical bar, as the one of the text editor appears. The only way I can stop Acrobat is by means of the task manager. I tried to de-install and the re- install Acrobat but the behaviour is always the same. What can I do??
Have you opened Acrobat and gone to Help>Updates to get an updated install?

Not able to create XML from an existing relational database
Hi,
I am trying to create and xml from an existing relational database. I am not able to get any XML data, I receive "XMLTYPE()" as the result.
Here's the query -
SQL> select o.order_id, XMLELEMENT("order", XMLATTRIBUTES(o.order_id as ID)) AS "result" from order_
info o where order_id=2793;
ORDER_ID
result()
+2793+
XMLTYPE()
I was expecting to get +<order id=2793 />+ instead of XMLTYPE().
I am using -
SQLPlus: Release 9.0.1.0.1*
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
I have also run some checks to confirm XML DB installation -
SQL> select 1 from all_users where username = 'XDB';
+1+
+1+
SQL> desc RESOURCE_VIEW;
Name Null? Type
RES SYS.XMLTYPE
ANY_PATH VARCHAR2(4000)
RESID RAW(16)
I think, I have something wrong with installation or configuration.
Any idea about what have I done wrong here?Works fine now. Got the result "<order ID="2793"></order>".
Thanks. :-) -
Essbase as a source in OBIEE 11g and using lookup to Relation database
Hello All,
We are trying to implement Essbase as primary source for our obiee 11g repository and using relational database as secondary source of data.
I was using a lookup functionality in repository to lookup value from one of the Essbase's Dimension's attribute to relational database, however, there is error when testing this in OBIEE Dashboards.
And tried to look this error in support.oracle and googled it but was not able to find anything on it.
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS. [nQSError: 43119] Query Failed: [nQSError: 46008] Internal error: File server\Query\Src\SQLookupUtility.cpp, line 145. (HY000)
Have you had any such issue and how can we pass this issue?
I am trying to find if there are any quick resolution before going to oracle support.
TIA.
ParishIs Essbase 11.1.1.3 supported as a source for OBIEE 11g?From the certification matrix (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-enterprise-edition/bi-11gr1certmatrix-166168.xls) we can see that only Essbase 9.3.3+ and 11.1.2+ are supported, not 11.1.1.3
