Start X at console login with WM selection menu

I was using CDM and wanted to, optionally,  start X at console login like CDM does but as a non root user, so I wrote a tiny script to do it:
#!/bin/bash
#xstarter.sh
WM_LIST=( ' ' 'Openbox' 'Antico' 'XFCE' 'Awesome' 'WMFS' 'I3' 'Subtle' 'Tinywm' 'Console')
TOTAL_WMS=9
#need to assign the $TERM comparison to a variable
#same goes for the console comparison
if [ $TERM == 'linux' ]; then
echo 'Please select one:'
for ((i=1; i<=$TOTAL_WMS; i++))
do
echo "$i. ${WM_LIST[$i]}"
done
echo ' '
read -n 1 choice
echo " "
echo "Your choice: ${WM_LIST[$choice]}"
if [ "${WM_LIST[$choice]}" != "Console" ]; then
xinit ${WM_LIST[$choice]}
fi
fi
exit 0
Just put it somewhere in your $PATH, make it executable and put the executable name in your .bash_profile like this:
[user@desktop ~]$ cat .bash_profile
. $HOME/.bashrc
PATH=$PATH:/home/user/bin
fortune |cowsay
xstarter.sh
It would then start automatically when you log in to a tty. and display a rudimentary selection menu like:
/ Memory fault -- \
| core...uh...um...core... Oh dammit, I |
\ forget! /
\ ^__^
\ (oo)\_______
||----w |
|| ||
Please select one:
1. Openbox
2. Antico
3. XFCE
4. Awesome
5. WMFS
6. I3
7. Subtle
8. Tinywm
9. Console
9
Your choice: Console
[user@desktop ~]$
of course you would also need to  update your .xinitrc to handel the arguments correctly:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
#exec openbox-session
#export DE=gnome
DEFAULT_SESSION=openbox-session
numlockx
xrdb load .Xdefaults &
xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr &
nitrogen --restore &
startserving.sh &
mpd ~/.mpd/config
mpnotify.sh &
fittstool &
case $1 in
XFCE)
exec startxfce4
Openbox)
exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
Antico)
exec /usr/bin/antico-deluxe
WMFS)
exec /usr/bin/wmfs
Awesome)
exec awesome
I3)
exec i3
Subtle)
exec subtle
Tinywm)
lxpanel &
xcompmgr -cC &
exec /usr/bin/tinywm
exec $DEFAULT_SESSION
esac
of course it may be totally useless to everybody but me :) But I still thought I'd share it.

I can login as a non root user but the X session starts with root privileges. Maybe it is designed to do so. I may take a look into it later.

    It could be solved by using the ClearCache argument, when i starts the console.

  • Cannot get past admin console login with Apache plug-in

    I am running Weblogic 8.1 Express (evaluation download) on a RedHat 7.3 host with
    Apache 1.3.27. There is a single admin server and no managed servers. I am able
    to connect to and use an application (e.g. http://ashish/weblogic/survey_web)
    with no problems, but receive a 503 error when I connect to the console (http://ashish/console)
    and submit my login information. The relevant section of httpd.conf is:
    <VirtualHost default:80>
    <IfModule mod_weblogic.c>
    WebLogicHost ashish
    WebLogicPort 7001
    ErrorPage /weblogic_error.html
    MatchExpression /console
    <Location /weblogic>
    SetHandler weblogic-handler
    PathTrim /weblogic
    </Location>
    </IfModule>
    </VirtualHost>

    Little strange. But just want to be clear - you tried http command and with valid username/password you are not able to run "ping" http command - right?  Can you juct check your Admin Server configuration and restart Admin server once and see if it helps. Also do you see any errors in logs - say master, admin logs?

  • IPhone 4 wifi portal login with drop down menu

    Hi,
    I'm extremely happy with my iPhone 4. I use it often in WiFi hotspots (hotels, university, train stations etc) and the new portal log in system is really handy. Previously I used a third party WiFi portal logging in app which is now no longer necessary. HOWEVER, there seems to be a problem with the iPhone 4 remembering log in protocols for WiFi portals that include selecting an item from a drop down menu before logging in. For instance, the WiFi hotspots in trainstations here in the Netherlands work with several protocols depending on through which organisation you can log in. Before entering your log in details you have to select through which organisation you have access to such a hotspot. The third party logging in app was able to remember how to do this, but the iPhone 4 auto logging in thing (sorry, I don't know the term) does not remember. It's frustrating to have to fill the details in every time. And I can't even use the third party app any more because it needs primary connection to the local WiFi before it can log in, and the iPhone 4 won't give a primary connection if you don't fill in the details to log in (and if you do, you're already logged in and the third party app is useles...)
    Sorry for my rant, I'm wondering if there's a way to make the iPhone 4 log in tool-thing remember the protocol for logging in with drop down menus, or if there will be an update to fix it...
    Thanks,
    Tasmin
    P.S. I'm running iOS 4.1

    are you sure your stop() are in the right place??
    eg.. on the last frame of the onRollOver animation??
    also... why have you got on(releaseOutside); ???
    onRollOut will suffice.

  • Help with Scne Selection menu

    I am putting a full length feature together and need to have scene selections. I noticed on all (or most) DVDs it seems to be one menu(I may be wrong) with scene numbers 1-4, 5-8, etc. When you click on thes numbers the menu BG stays the same but the pictures change according to your chapter selection. I can't figure out how this is done. It may be 3 similar menus in their own VTs.
    I also need to know how after the scene you seleced has played it continues the movie from that point to the end. Is this done by just not setting an "End Jump"
    If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

    It may be 3 similar menus
    Usually done this way - try to put all the menus in
    the same VTS with the track (in DVD SP 4 this feature
    available) will help a bit
    I also need to know how after the scene you
    seleced has played it continues the movie from that
    point to the end. Is this done by just not setting an
    "End Jump"
    Right do not set any end jumps for the markers, just
    point to the marker and it will play through
    If you only want to play a section then return to
    menu, use stories, one for each section, then one for
    play all

    Also (and I just saw this was you and I discussing in

    just in case) some of the story info

    Thanks Drew,
    What I am understanding is I will make a story from the feature track which I will then drag into the main video title set and from this make all my chapters. Is this right?

  • Selection Menu for VM, possible?

    Hi all,
    I pretty new at this, but after weeks of trial and error, I am able to get the SRSS 4.2 and ESX4U1 to display my vm desktop to a DTU. Now I want to dig a little deeper.
    Question, is it possible in SRSS 4.2 to be able to create a "selection menu" when the DTU connects to the server? What I want is this, when a DTU or card session is connected to the server it will display a "selection menu" of all available vm for the user to choose which vm they want to start up. I am currently in an environment that the user will need to use multiple vm and it would really help out if we could present to the user with a "selection menu" to choose from.

    Did you look at using [Sun VDI|http://wikis.sun.com/display/VDI3dot1/How+to+Access+Desktops+Using+a+Sun+Ray+Client+%28with+a+VDI+Desktop+Selector%29] instead of plain SRSS?

  • How to get Select menu to determine next set of (hidden) inputs?

    Operating System: Mac OSX 10.6
    Software: Dreamweaver CS4, with local testing environment.
    The website i am currently creating uses form based quotes, (for a printing business).
    See here,      http://www.barringtonprint.com/perfect/quote-continuous.html      for the current webpage i am working on.
    I want to use a select menu to determine how many 'parts' the user requires, and for it to then display the necessary text fields for them to fill in.
    At the monent the form just has the maximun amount (7) already on the form, and just requires the user to leave the non-required fields empty.
    However i would like the form to just have inputs for the first 'part' (Part 1), with a select menu that gives the user the option to select more than 1 'part' and then display how many more rows of text fields are needed depending on the outcome of the select menu.
    I presume i will need to use javascript to do this but i am unsure on how to proceed.
    NOTE: these are old forms that i have inherited and do use tables, im aware this is not the best way to proceed, however im sticking with them for now.
    Any help will be much appreciated, as this is driving me nuts.
    Andrew Barrington

    I'm sure there are cleaner ways of doing this, but I already had this put together from another project.  Hopefully it will get you started.

    The console shows thousands of these error messages and it's messed up many functions of my MacBook.
    I have VMFusion on my Mac because for work I need to use Windows.  Last night I tried installing Windows 7 but could not complete installation.  I got a message saying "can not locate driver".  Then I started getting the Error 586.
    Today I unistalled VMFusion hoping that would resolve the Error 586.  No such luck.
    Can anyone help me get rid of this constant error, plesase?

    I believe this has something to do with Mail. Are these frequently occurring errors? If so and you quit Mail do the errors cease?
    Google searching for "org.postfix.master" reveals quite a number of links that you might check for more information.

  • How to start graphical desktop GUI from solaris console login?

    I installed successfully Solaris 11 Express.
    However after Restart only the solaris console login prompt appears.
    How can I manually start the graphical desktop GUI from console login?
    How can I start always automatically the graphical desktop GUI from console login?
    Peter

    When you install Solaris 11 Express from the LiveCD on a system which supports the graphical login screen, it usually comes up automatically. So first, we need to know why this didin't happen. First, did you use Automated Install? If so, you may not have all of the software you need. If that is the case, you may need to do a "pkg install slim_install" as root to get the software you need. If you have all of the software you need, check "svcs -xv" to make sure that there were no problems in the system start up. If problems are listed, you should resolve those issues and see if that allows the graphic install to come up. If "svcs -xv" is clean, you should check the "gdm" service. If it is disabled, you need to enable it. I'm sure there are other potential problems but this should get you started.

    Before is ok, can't remember when this problem show up.
    Don't know where to go, please give me a hint.
    You have to give us a hint.
    What is your processor?
    How much RAM have you?
    What is your video card/ship set?
    What kernel are you running?
    I spotted this in your dump:
    [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-2: switching from hotplug detection to polling
    In this case, drm means Direct Rendering Management and has to do with your Video subsystem.  An interrupt is where the hardware sends a signal to the processor that something has happened that requires the urgent attention of the processor.  The kernel is protesting that the hardware is barraging it with interrupt requests.

  • [Solved] Can't login with current keyboard layout and `@` in password

    Hi, I'm a new arch user. I followed archwiki to install Enlightenment17. All went fine but I have a problem to login since during setup I inserted '@' in root/regular user passwords. During setup I selected the Italian layout and all seems ok, except grafical login through entrance (from aur, but I tested also kdm, with same results): password not recognized. Before asking, is not a CAPS/NUMLOCK issue since the password works using it in console login. I discovered that I can type '@' with the following combination: SHIFT+2; in an italian keybord this should print a double quote (") but in entrance (and kdm) it correponds to '@'. After login this way, the keyboard works normally (for instance using 'su'). So the problem is limited to graphical login (entrance and kdm) during which a different keyboard layout is used.
    Did I miss some config file?
    For the sake of clarity:
    1) /etc/locale.gen has "it_IT.UTF-8 UTF-8" uncommented
    2) /etc/locale.conf contains "LANG=it_IT.UTF-8"
    3) /etc/vconsole.conf contains "KEYMAP=it"
    4)
    $ locale
    LANG=it_IT.UTF-8
    LC_CTYPE="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_NUMERIC="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_TIME="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_COLLATE="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_MONETARY="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_MESSAGES="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_PAPER="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_NAME="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_ADDRESS="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_TELEPHONE="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="it_IT.UTF-8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="it_IT.UTF-8"

    Thanks for any help.

    cfr wrote:Have you tried specifying a variant?
    I exclude a variant problem considering that in any other condition the keyboard layout is right. The system is configured for an it KEYMAP but it is obvious that in entrance/kdm is used an 'us' map. Is this hardcoded somewhere? I also tryed to comment out any entry in /etc/locale.gen except 'it_IT.UTF-8 UTF-8': still 'us' keymap in graphical login screen.
    Probably a kind user with a non-us keyborad layout could create a dummy user with password containing '@' or '#' or any other special symbol to verify that this condition is reproducible, a first step for a bug report.
    Cheers

  • Oracle Services dont start - Auto services, different login

    Hi Guys,
    I have one query, is it necessary that user account who has installed Oracle when login only then oracle services will run?
    I have created another user, who is added in following user groups -
    Administrators,
    Backup Operators,
    Power Users,
    ORA_DBA
    When I login with user who has installed Oracle, then services start, but when I login as new user with above privileges services don't start on their own.
    I have checked system log, application log, listener log there are no error messages.
    Note : OS - Windows 2000 Server
    Service - Automatic
    No cluster, stand alone instance
    IS there any dependancy of user login and services?
    Thanks in advance!
    Av.

    Avi4Ora wrote:
    Ok, I got it.
    But giving username and password in this option will make this service run only if that particular user logs in.Those credentials in the service properties have nothing to do with who is logged in to the console/desktop. The services run even if no one is logged in. Are they set for 'autostart'? - oh, now I see in your first message they are. So, since they are 'auto' started at machine startup, then who's credentials do you think they are using? They certainly aren't sitting around waiting for someone to log on to the console and start them up with HIS credentials!
    There's something missing here you aren't telling us. Exactly which services are you talking about here? What are their names in the services control? If they are autostart, why are you trying to start them manually when you log on? Exactly what are you doing to try to start them when you log on?
    >
    Lets say there are 3-4 administrators and they want to login in this server, then in that case evert time they will have to login with the account who is registered in this option.
    Worst will be case when any automated scripts are to be run.
    I hope my concern is reflected in above lines.
    Thanks!
