Starting up j2ee and EJB deployment tool on Windows 98

I will start off this question with an apology if it is too stupid,
basic, or placed in the wrong group. I am relatively new to the world
of Java and even newer to the world of Server-side Java and EJBs.
However, I am plugging away.
I am using my trusty 4 year old system with Windows 98 second edition
to dabble with Server-side Java and EJB applications. I am using
Tomcat 4.0 as my server. When I try and start the j2ee server or the
EJB deployment tool I get the following scrolling messages:

I have tried to adjust the memory settings in the DOS window with no
success. My question has three parts:
1) Can these applications be run using Windows 98 and if so what are
the exact DOS window memory settings for this?
2) Where exactly can I find the documentation that specifies this?
(please be specific as possible as I have read the readme.txt files
supplied with j2ee)
3) Should this and similar questions be posted in another
group/section?
I truly appreciate anyone's help with this.
Sincerely,
Tim

You're going to have a lot of pain unless you upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP.
In the mean time, set your environment size much larger (google for "Out of
environment space") and use WinOne from http://www.cia.com.au/luke/ ...
that's how I scraped by on Windows 98 for a while.

  • GUI  EJB deployment tool

    Hi,
Are there any open source/free GUI EJB deployment tool available which will work for major application servers ?
(I am aware that non-GUI xdoclet + ANT is a powerful combination. But I am just starting on learning EJB , so at the moment I want to use a GUI)
    Thanks in advance
    Ratheesh

The J2EE Component Wizard is a swing application, that creates ant build-files and source code with XDoclet tags. At this moment only the XDoclet tags of the JBoss will be supported.

  • Orion and Sun Deploy tool

I have been trying to use the SUN Deploytool to create .ear file for auto-deployment within Orion.

    Andrew -
In the past there have been problems with the Deploytool from Sun as relates to Orion. I don't know if those problems have been worked out, but none-the-less I gave up on that a year or so ago. I use ant to create my ear files in practice but am currently evaluating the JDeveloper beta and thus far am reasonably impressed with the ease of use. I would give that a try if you have the bandiwdth to download it. Investigate Ant for another alternative - though you have to create your own web.xml and ejb-jar.xml files (as well as the application*.xml files). Sometimes I use the sucky tools that come with Orion (OCJ4) to help out as far as creating the related XML files and to create the ear file. Depends on my level of tolerance that particular day.

  • J2EE 1.4 Deploy Tool Problems

    Hi all,
I am new to J2EE and I am trying out some examples but the examples and the interface seem to hae some differences so I have not succeeded in doing anything successfully.
The docs say when I select an application in the treeview, their should be a "JNDI" tab but there were three other tabs of which none of them is the "JNDI" tab.
The docs also say that when "Deploy" is selected from the "Tools" menu, I would see the "Object to Deploy" and "Target Server" choices but I do not see these. Rather, I see "Deployment Settings Filenae" (which I leave blamk as there is no xml file found"), and "URI". On clicking OK, Deployment always fails.
Am I doing something wrong or has the interface changed so much and there is another documentation available?
    Thank you.

There is actually no bug in the 1.4 version
You have to first create the EJB jar and the Client jar etc as usual then you will have to select
    {"File"|"Deployment Settings"|"Create New File"}
it will present a default file name, accept that or give an xml file name of your choice. You have just created the deployment descriptor. Now go back to the application tree and you will see a node called "Sun's J2ee Reference Implementation". This node will appear under all your existing branches. Click on this node under your EJB branch. Now you can see the JNDI name tab. Enter the JNDI name here and in your client application
    It should work

  • EJB Deploy tool question

    Hi everybody,
I have successfully build and deployed a simple Application using Sun's deploy tool and j2ee server. Now, I just simply want to use Weblogic6.1 to do the same thing for my Application.
I uploaded the .ear Application file to Weblogic6.1 and try to deploy it, but failed many times. Am I doing something wrong here ? My question is, the .ear file I generated by using Sun's tool, can it simply just uploaded to Weblogic and deploy ?
I know Weblogic has a different kind of process to build an application. But, an ear is an ear file. It should be the same for either app server such as Weblogic or Sun's j2ee, right? Correct me if I am wrong.
    Thanks in advance.
    Philip

You should deploy your EJBs to the particular application server using the deployment tool that is particularly suited for that application server. Why? Although application servers have some things in common like the structure of the ejb-jar.xml file (which is part of the J2EE specification), some are application server specific implementation which varies from different application servers.
You used the J2EE RI application server. That does not mean that the ear file you have generated from the deploytool is also the same ear file that WebLogic can fully understand.
Try to deploy your EJB's using the deploy tool bundled with WebLogic.
    Hope this helps

  • Sequence of startup classes and EJB deployment

The default sequence when WLS is starting is deploying EJB first and then startUpClasses. Could someone tell me if it's possible to change the sequence.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Sure have your startup class do its work and then hot-deploy the EJB.

  • New to J2EE and SUN development tools

    Greetings:
I'm confused. I recently purchased the book "Enterprise J2ME" where the first sample app (iFeedBack) requires a J2EE-compliant server. Regarding deployment of this application, the Java Web Services Developer Pack engine is also mentioned. Here is the text regarding the iFeedBack app that I want to build and deploy:
    page 35
"The application download package has three subdirectories, each containing an application component. You can ust the ANT build.xml script in each directory to build and deploy the component.
Directory surveyserver contains a sample survey server application. After running ANT, a file bin/iFeedBackSurvey.ear is generated. It can be deployed to any J2EE-compliant server (J2EE v1.3 RI is tested). If this is the first time you deploy it, you need to run the sql/Init.sql script against your default database.
Directory singlesignon contains an example single sign-on toke service. Currently, all usernames and passwords are hardcoded into the source code for simplicity. Obviously, in real-world development, it must be hooked up with campus identity databases. File deployable.war is produced by the ANT script and can be deployed to the Java Web Services Developer Pack v. 1.0 engine."
My question is this: I thought I could download the Sun Studio Creator to get the Sun App Server to run the server portion of this code on my Mac OS X environment. But then the text above also refers to the JWSDP engine. So what tools do I really need and what are the distinctions and how do the following tools RELATE to each other?:
    - Sun Java Studio Standard 5 update 1
    - Java Web Services Developer Pack 1.5
    - Sun Java System Application Server
Am I correct in assuming that the Sun Java Studio contains both the Application Server as well as the JWSDP? Also, what is the difference between Sun Java Studio Creator and the Sun Java Studio Standard?
Also, the source code for the iFeedBack app (which won a $20,000 award) is available at http://www.enterprisej2me.com/pages/enterprisej2me/book.php
I am working through SUN's The J2EE Tutorial and trying to gather the tools necessary to run the tutorial code on my Mac.
    Thanks for the guidance,
    Alex

Creator is a drag-and-drop IDE for creating web applications (servlets, JSP, JSF). Studio Standard/Enterprise is a traditional general purpose IDE. Both Creator and Standard/Enterprise are built on NetBeans, the open source IDE.
The Java Web Services Developer Pack is a distribution for creating web service-enabled web applications, and is built on Apache Tomcat. The technologies included in the JWSDP are also included in the J2EE SDK/Application Server 8/8.1 PE. The J2EE SDK/Application Server 8 is a full J2EE 1.4 server. Some versions of Studio 5 are bundled with Application Server 7 PE, a J2EE 1.3 server. I don't believe the JWSDP is bundled with Studio 5.
Application Server 8 PE is bundled with Creator.
If you are doing enterprise development, look into NetBeans 4.1 EA, which has a plugin for Application Server 8/8.1 PE and templates for web applications and session enterprise beans.

  • Start the J2EE SDK in the foreground on Windows

I have upgraded my development AS from Sun ONE 7 to J2EE SDK 8.1. One feature I miss most is: 7 used to live in a "Command Prompt" box where I could watch the log go by and sometimes press Ctrl+Break for a full thread dump.
Apparently 8.1 starts everything as a background process, and Windows lacks the equivalents of "tail -f server.log" and "kill -QUIT <pid>".
Is there a way to start 8.1 in the foreground, so that I can watch the log in real-time and generate a thread dump?

You are right, domain creation requires config/asenv.bat file to be in place.
It is possible that asenv.bat file did not get created properly due to incomplete uninstallation of the previous installation. To start from the scratch, follow the instructions in section 3 of this article:
    https://j2ee-sdk.dev.java.net/howtos/J2EE_SDK_Installation_HOWTO.html#p3
(so, either install in a different location or cleanup component registration info).
If installation on the clean system fails again please post any errors.

  • J2EE and WSDP

hi, i've got the JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) with the Ant Build Tool 1.4.1 up and running and want to get started with making JavaServer Pages. Now i see that Sun has a JavaTM Web Services Developer Pack (JavaTM WSDP) and that the Java WSDP EA2 release automates the integration of Java WSDP components with J2EE. Can anybody tell me what the benefits are of installing WSDP when you allready have Ant and the deploy tool and a server running on port 8000? and will the deploytool "use" tomcat on port 8080 or stay at port 8000?
    tnx,
    G.

    Hi,
This is just to take an attempt on your question.
    J2ee 1.3( which I presume you are using ) is a
reference implementation of the J2ee spec.
WSDP is a pack for the developers, who wants to
create webservices and deploy them. The WSDP also
comes with a Registry Server to allow publication
and retrival of Metadata of businesses.
    Hope this helps.

  • Deployment Tool, for 6.40 SP7

I just installed EP 6.0 SP6 on NetWeaver 6.40 SP7. When run deploytool.bat, a popup window tells error:

  • Using J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 on Windows 98 and Windows Me

I know J2EE isn't supported on Windows 98 and Windows Me, but like many others I've been able to get J2EE 1.3.1 and J2EE 1.4 Beta to work quite well on Windows 98 and Windows Me. However, no such luck when I tried to do the same with J2EE 1.4 Beta 2. Basically, after downloading j2eesdk-1_4-beta2-windows-eval-app.zip, extracting it into C:\j2ee_app_win, and double clicking setup.exe (or setup.dos.exe for that matter), the setup GUI doesn't appear. Has anybody gotten passed this point and gotten it to work?

Basically, J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 setup.exe doesn't work on Windows 98 or Windows Me even with 256 MB of memory. You'll see it appear on the task bar and then disappear right away. The setup task keeps running, so you have to kill it with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
However, J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 does work quite well on Windows XP Home Edition even though it's not supported by Sun. So if you don't have Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000, you can at least try it.

  • J2EE Architecture (EJB)

I have become increasing disillusioned with J2EE and EJBs in particular. I am no longer sure what they are trying to achieve and how the objectives are implemented. Writing the simplest EJB by hand is time consuming. Using something like XDocolet produces mountains of Pseudo-Code in comment blocks. The very idea of using comments in code to write code seems perverse to me. Surely comments are for comments and code is for code. After all this what is generated? The simplest of SQL statements. What are the benefits ? More efficient code ? More robust code ? Easier to maintain code ? More portable code ?
Would somebody care to point out what I am missing ?

    Excellent thoughts, Annie, as usual.
Performance and learning curve seem to be the biggest complaints about J2EE and EJBs.
I think stateless session and message beans are winners. Entity beans are the red-headed stepchildren: nobody seems to like them much, even with local interfaces. There is so much disagreement about how to handle persistence in Java (e.g., raw JDBC, JDO, O/R mapping, CMP, etc.) that how to "best" handle it is still open to question.
I'm not aware of the same level of thrashing in the .NET community. (I'm not aware of much in the .NET community.) How have they solved the O/R impedence mismatch to everyone's satisfaction?
Scott Ambler wrote some terrific papers about O/R mapping. I'll have to go back and re-read them to see if I can figure out which of the competing persistence technologies best address the problem.
The whole point of J2EE and its containers, IMO, is that the smart developers who write the container relive mere mortal programmers like me from writing a lot of difficult plumbing. The container worries about threading, transactions, persistence, clustering, security, and all sorts of other things that I'd have to write a lot of code to reproduce without it. (Or worse, just leave it out and hope for the best.) I think that's still a worthy thing to do. The trick is to take as much advantage of the container as you can without distorting your application's design or compromising its performance.
EJB 3.0 is debating this again. POJOs sound like they'll be much more prominent. It'll be interesting to see where this goes.
Personally, I'm astonished at how complex entity beans and persistence are in J2EE. Entity beans map to database rows, but that's not a good match for the set-like SQL and relational databases. Remote entity beans are a disaster: Do I really need a remote call for each and every field? Local interfaces help, but we still need the Session Facade Pattern, DTOs, all kinds of machinery just to get a bloody value out of a database and into a JSP. How much layering is too much?
