Startup database via sqlplus - ORA-12514

Windows XP Prof., ORACLE 10g R2
I did the following on the database server:
sqlplus sys as sysdbaSQL>shutdown
SQL>exit
sqlplus /nologSQL> connect sys as sysdba
ERROR:
ORA-12514: TNS: Listener kann in Connect-Deskriptor angegebenen Service aktuell nicht aufl÷sen
What have I to do that I can connect to database on the server via sqlplus without using the listener? I understand that the listener can't find the service because the database is down. But there must be a possibility to connect to an idle instance.
Thanks in advance!
Wolfgang

I've shutdown the database from SQLPLUS.How to
startup the database from sql plus.I tried to connect
using sys and i recieve Listener doesn't know
currently of service....Your errors seems that you were using sqlplus in client not in server to shudown
database and try to startup database.
If so, you need to config your listener.ora with static listener as well as dynamic listener.

  • Newbie: trying to open a database using SQLPLUS, ORA errors

    Hi!
Installed 10g (and latest patch) on Suse10.2. When I try to startup the database using SQLPLUS I get this:
    Redo Buffers 2932736 bytes
ORA-00205: error in identifying control file, check alert log for more info
    I check the alertlog:

Any ideas on whats causing this problem? I heve used google ALOT but have not found any good answers....

    Hi!
Well, Oracle was not the user, but I have changed that now. But now I get this instead:
    SQL> startup
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 100663296 bytes
    Fixed Size 1260288 bytes

    ORA-00202: control file: '/opt/oradata/oracle/control01.ctl'
So, I found some info about creating a controlfile, but that seems quite advanced...any suggestions?

When I create a new database through Database Configuration Assistant using "Create a Database" or configurate the orcl database using "Configure Database options"
Preparing to Configure Database is OK.
    Completing Database Configuration is failed.
    It shows the following message:
Enterprise manager configuration failed due to the following error -
Listener is not up or database service is not registered with it.
Start the Listener and register database service and run EM Configuration Assistant again.
After open emConfig.log, it shows "ora-12514".
When using the SQL Developer, the new instance can be connected.
However, I cannot change the new instance in the dbconsole.
Please help to solve the problem.

ORA-16664: unable to receive the result from a database
Cause: During execution of a command, a database in the Data Guard broker
configuration failed to return a result.
Action: Check Data Guard broker logs for the details of the failure. Fix any
possible network problems and try the command again.
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
Cause: The listener received a request to establish a connection to a database or other service. The connect descriptor received by the listener specified a service name for a service (usually a database service) that either has not yet dynamically registered with the listener or has not been statically configured for the listener. This may be a temporary condition such as after the listener has started, but before the database instance has registered with the listener.
Action: - Wait a moment and try to connect a second time.
    - Check which services are currently known by the listener by executing: lsnrctl services <listener name>
    - Check that the SERVICE_NAME parameter in the connect descriptor of the net service name used specifies a service known by the listener.
    - If an easy connect naming connect identifier was used, check that the service name specified is a service known by the listener.
    - Check for an event in the listener.log file.

My guess is that the database service "HCM" is not up and running but not sure how to make up and running. Even I could not find it listed in the linux services list.
Note: Able to login sqlplus using "sqlplus sys/sys as sysdba" but failing to access database table as "select * from PSRECDEFN;"
    thanks

    Hi Nicolas,
I have no luck and the error still persists.
I have set the "export ORACLE_SID=HCM" from root user and oracle user too.
I guess, I have already loaded database when I ran the "cd /opt/oracle/psft/vm
    ./oraclevm-template.sh"
The outcome of the above script as similar as below:

  • Oracle Startup/Shutdown with SQLPLUS and ORADIM in Windows...

I am a newbie to the Windows platform. SQLPLUS will not allow me to issue a STARTUP command. This is what I get when I attempt to SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE and subsequently issue a STARTUP MOUNT/NOMOUNT or any STARTUP command for that matter. The SHUTDOWN command works successfully but the subsequent startup fails with an ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor message.

ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
    SQL>
When I look at the Windows service, it still reports 'Started' despite the fact that I shutdown the instance. What is the proper protocol for shutting down and starting up an Oracle instance in Windows. Do I have to coordinate these activities with the ORADIM -STARTUP / -SHUTDOWN commands?

I am also newbie to oracle and running into the similar problem when trying to start oracle database using windows command prompt and getting the below error:
Command prompt is being run as administrator on windows7 O/S
C:\ORACLE\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\BIN>oradim -SHUTDOWN -SID O22BVGI -SHUTTYPE srvc, inst -SHUTMODE nornal
    ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
The reason behind this to do it is , I need a batch script for stopping and restarting the oracle database instance using a Pfile which will contain the initialization parameters.
    Please can someone help!

  • Can connect to local DB via SQLPlus but not via SQLDeveloper, all info incl

Have a database running on a new local Windows 7 Professional Machine with data, users, etc from an db import. Able to access database via sqlplus, run queries, etc. Cannot run from Oracle SQL Developer. Trying to use Connection Type Basic, Hostname localhost, port *1521*.
Using SID = xe I get:
Status: Failure -Test failed: Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection The Connection descriptor used by the client was localhost:1521:xe
When I add a service in my listener.ora file for sid_name=xe and program_name=xe (which I include below), I get
ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection. The connection descriptor used by the client was localhost:1521:xe
Using Service name = xe I get:
Status: Failure -Test failed: Io exception: the Network Adapter could not establish the connection.
Here's every single piece of information I think you may possibly need to help me with the issue. [I've been trying to find the solution on these forums so I hope I haven't messed my settings up even more than they had been before.]

  • TNS Listener -ORA-12514 error following database shutdown - Oracle 11g

    Hi
I have hit a problem with my oracle development database.
When in sqlplus I executed the shutdown command, but nothing happened for several minutes and it was just hanging. No messages were displayed to the screen. The only thing was to close the command window. When I open sqlplus again and enter in the user name password as sysdba I am getting ORA 12514 TNS Listener could not resolve service in descriptor. This is odd as I could log on before and use the database. So I thought that the services were still shutting down I waited, and using the Windows snap on tool for Oracle 11g, I restarted the services on the database, but this has had no effect.
Even using EM made no difference because I couldn't log on to perform a startup or recovery.
So, please does anyone know how I can fix this?
    Thanks

open Command Window & do EXACTLY as below; line for line
    sqlplus
    / as sysdba
    shutdown abort
    startup
    exit
COPY command & results from above then PASTE all back here

    Hi,
    Version 10204
In a single instance database i would like to create new SERVICEs in order to use them later with Resource Manager.
    The instance name is DWH.
    I run the following commands:
I added to the tnsnames.ora file the following input:
    XYZ =

    > exec DBMS_SERVICE.CREATE_SERVICE('xyz','xyz');
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    > exec DBMS_SERVICE.START_SERVICE('xyz');

    You told us.

I ask some questions, you set alias for listener port (no default) + local_listener parameter, don't you?
    If you did....
    Please check by .....
    lsnrctl status
    lsnrctl service
    Let me show my example:
    About 1522 (no default port)

    - check tnsnames.ora file in the same location listener.ora file.

  • Problem in accessing second database instance on same host (ORA-12514)

    Hi,
I had a database ICMDB installed on my machine. After that i created a second database instance (Service name: BI_APPS) using DBCA on the same machine. Using NETCA i also created a new listener OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListenerBI_APPS_LISTENER on port 1522 on my machine. Then i configured this listener to listen for connections to service BI_APPS by adding the following to my tnsnames.ora:
    BI_APPS_LISTENER =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.2.109)(PORT = 1522))
Then i changed the port in my tns entry for BI_APPS to 1522 as follows:
    BI_APPS =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.2.109)(PORT = 1522))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = BI_APPS)
I then restarted the following services:
    OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener
    OracleServiceBIAPPS
    OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListenerBI_APPS_LISTENER
After this, when i try to access my first DB ICMDB via toad, the connection is successful. However, when i try to access the service BI_APPS i get the following error:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
What am i doing wrong? Here is the content of my files:

    Hi Ed,
I understand your point, however whenever i have tried to use the same listener to access my second instance, this is the error i have always received:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
That does not indicate you need a second listener.
And, after deleting the listener.ora file ,if i try the the command lsnrctl start, i get the error:
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
Hence i restored the files. What do i do?
I've never experienced a 12560 trying to start a listener.  I'll need to see if I can create a test system on Windows and try to recreate.  Will be a good subject for my blog, that has been too long with no new content.
Since this is windows, I'd first check that the Windows service for the listenr is started.
Whatever, multiple listeners is NOT the solution.

  • Listener (and database instance) does not starts up automatically: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

Hi at all.... I'm a newbie with database oracle.,
    I have the follow problem:
I installed Oracle Database 11g R2 XE on my guest operating system CentOS 6.5.
I have changed  the hostname in my SO CentOS (where is installed oracle 11g R2 XE) after installation was completed successfully.
-) Before and during installation the hostname was localhost.
-) After installation I changed the hostname in VMCentOS
From the moment I changed the hostname, nothing starts up automatically. In particular, the listener and the database instance does not starts up automatically.
When I starts up the listener manually and I try to connect to database instance with SQLPLUS i get this error:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
I think that the problem is due to the changed hostname because I, for testing and debugging purpose, re-installed a new OS CentOS virtual machine, re-installed oracle database 11g and  I have not got that problem. The database instance and the listener starts up automatically!
Can any one tell me if maybe the problem is related to the hostname changed? ... and Why?
P.S.: After changed the hostname I have also modified the listener.ora and the tnsnames.ora by modifying the HOST with the correct hostname.
