Startup Parameter -g in SQL Server 2012

Can any one Explain whats the difference between the Start up parameters -g500 and -g512 in SQL Server 2012. Why we can't use both of them together.
Thank in advance.

see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms190737(v=sql.110).aspx
-g500 would reserve 500MB, -g512 512MB
Thanks for your reply. Can you please tell me how much maximum memory we can specify in this
parameter.
Thanks,

  • Unable to install SQL Server 2012 Developer

I have a problem with installing SQL Server 2012 (no matter which edition I choose). Installation usually runs well, but near the end shows up an error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
    The following error has occurred:
Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes.
    For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&ProdVer=11.0.3128.0&EvtType=0xD15B4EB2%25400x4BDAF9BA%25401306%254026
    BUTTONS:
    OK
The help link points to not-existing article on MSDN page. After I click OK button, the installation reaches it's end and shows up another, which tells, that Database Engine Services, Reporting Services - Native, Data Quality Services, Full-Text and Semantic
Extractions for Search and SQL Server Replication failed to install.
After that I am able to start, for example SQL Management Studio, but cannot connect to database. Also services of SQL Server (Server, Server Agent, Full-text Filter, Reporting Services) are stopped and I am not able to start them manually (any try throws an
error: "The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details").
I tried complete reinstalling of SQL Server, cleaning registry entries, different editions of that software - none method helped. Also, I tried the .iso images of installation media on other computers - it worked well and installed without any errors. My OS
    is Windows 8.1 x64.

    Hello,
Please uninstall SQL server completely from add remove program.Make sure you uninstall it completely
Now right click on Setup.exe file which is there in SQL Server installable and select run as administrator to start installation.
On page where you are asked to provide startup account for SQL Server service select NT Authority\System or Local System account.
This issue is basically after installation SQL Server is not able to bring online database services using account which you selected .Local system account will allow it to come online
After installation change startup account to domain account with least privilege
    Hope this helps

  • Unable to install SQL Server 2012 along with BIDS & VS 2012 on Windows 7

Unable to install SQL Server 2012 along with BIDS & VS 2012 on Windows 7 professional.
    I get the below error
    Could not find vsjitdebugger.exe
Blogs say anti-virus is stopping but I dont have one on the system.
Note: I had used SQL 2008 on the system previously and has a refresh i have deleted all the software to speed up the system.
Now i could not install both the software.
Can I get some help regarding this?

    Hi Nandu,
As your description, you come across an error(vsjitdebugger.exe cannot be found). Please confirm if the error occurs during the installation of SQL Server 2012.  If so, please help post SQL Server setup logs. By default, SQL Server setup log file locates
    in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
Base on my research, this error could be caused by that the previous uninstallation is improper and vsjitdebugger.exe file could be mistakenly deleted.
To troubleshoot the issue, you could start your computer into Safe Mode and fix your problem with one of the following methods. For more information, please refer to the article:
    http://www.fixerrorkit.com/fix-error/fix-vsjitdebugger.exe-error.html.
    1. You could execute the sfc /scannow command following steps below.
    a. Press "Windows+R", type in cmd and then right click "Run as administrator"
    b. Type in sfc /scannow (There's a space between sfc and /scannow) into the dialog and hit Enter key and click ok.
    c. Wait until the System File Checker finishes the check.
    2. You could use a Windows repair installation, also known as a Startup Repair to repair your Windows system files.
    3. You could install the latest Windows updates to fix vsjitdebugger.exe error. Microsoft often releases new service packs and system patches to replace or update some DLL files of Windows system.
    4. You could use third-party tool such as Automatic Error Fix Tool to fix your vsjitdebugger.exe error. However, Microsoft cannot make any representations regarding the quality, safety, or suitability of any third-party software or information found there.
In addition, if you are unable to install  Visual Studio, I suggest you post your question in Visual Studio Setup and Installation forum at
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=vssetup  . It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.

  • SQL Server 2012 Management Studio Displays Error With "New Query" and Intellisense Works Intermittenly

I was upgrade to SQL Server 2012 and Visual Studio 2010 was upgraded with SP1 the same day.  This is x64 machine.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio      11.0.2100.60
    Microsoft .NET Framework      4.0.30319.261
    Operating System      6.1.7601
Problem 1) With SQL Server Management Studio, selecting "New Query" a warning box is displayed: "The 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Configuration.Design.VisualStudioIntegration2010Package, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Configuration.Design.VisualStudioIntegration2010,
Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=netutral, PublicKeyToken=null' package did not load correctly.    The problem mayhave been cuased by a configuration change or by the installation of another extension.  You can get more information by running the
application together with the /log parameter on the command line, and then examining the file ...\AppDate\Roaming\Microsoft\AppEnv\10.0\ActivityLog.xml'.  Continue to show this error message?
Problem 2) In a Query Initellisense works intermittently but most of the time it will not display anything.  I have tried Edit|Intellisense|Refresh Cach size and also seperately, Edit | Intellisense | List Members but neither has helped.  Also
tried different selections for Tools|options| T-SQL | Intellisense| Maximum Script Size; no luck either.

    Hi WallyJim,
For your first problem, possible workaround:
In Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs), right click the Microsoft Enterprise Library 5.0 Optional Update 1 program and select change. Remove the VisualStudio2010 integration.
Then, install the EnterpriseLibrary Configuration extension from Microsoft via the Extension Manager in VS2010. This will allow you to launch the configuration editor from VS2010, but will not be installed for SSMS.
For more information, please refer to
    https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/620532/error-message-on-new-query-window-opening.
For your second problem, the following conditions might affect the behavior of IntelliSense:
There is a code error above the cursor.
The insertion point is inside a code comment.
The insertion point is inside a string literal.
The automatic options are turned off.
For more information, refer to Troubleshooting IntelliSense (SQL Server Management Studio):
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173434.aspx.

    Maggie

  • Error rsItemNotFound when using ReportingService2010 endpoint in SharePoint Mode (SQL Server 2012 & SP2013)

    Hi all,
I installed SQL Server 2012 in SharePoint Mode, with SharePoint 2013 on a Windows Server 2012 virtual machine. The issue occurs when I try to use the ListChildren operation of the ReportService2010 endpoint.
It manages to connect to the server, but it refuses to list any children. Here's the code I'm using:
    using System;
    using System.Net;
    internal class Test
    public static void Main()
    var rs = new ReportingService2010
Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password", "machine")
    CatalogItem[] items = null;
// Retrieve a list of all items from the report server database.
    try
    items = rs.ListChildren("/", true);
    catch (Exception e)
    Console.WriteLine(e.Message);
When executed, this code throws an exception (which is caught and displayed) : "The item '/' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound)"
The same code works (i.e. does not throw any exception and the items variable contains some CatalogItem) when used against a SQL Server 2012 configured in native mode.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, maybe the first parameter shouldn't be "/" but something else?
    Thanks for your help
    Aotio

    +1
I'm getting this error as well.  My test software is connecting to two different servers; one is running on SharePoint 2010 and I have no problems using the ReportingService2010 functions on that, but I am getting this same error when trying to connect
to a service on SharePoint 2013.

  • How to hide product key page while installing SQL server 2012 ?

I need to hide the product key page while installing SQL server 2012 enterprise edition
I was trying to use the following command
    Setup.exe /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQL /INSTANCENAME=Intuition /PID=<My product Key.
    /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
The product key was applied , but the install screen is being shown with the Product key i have provided and it is in editable mode.
Is there any way i can hide this SQL server product key page ?
The reason is we are including SQL setup in our application and as per Microsoft policy we should not reveal the product key to user. If we are able to hide this from installing page , we can hide the installation command in some exe.
Note : Customers need fulfledged versions so we can't install SQLExpress.

    Hello,
Could you try using /Q or /QS parameter?
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259(v=sql.110).aspx
    Hope this helps.

Line 94, 97 and 100 appear to not have spaces at the beginning of each string, which could cause some issues:
    #set reporting to off
    $command += ('/SQMREPORTING="0"')
    #Add Browser Account
    $command +=('/BROWSERSVCSTARTUPTYPE="Disabled"')
    #Add Backup path
    $command +=('/SQLBACKUPDIR="{0}"' -f $backuppath)
    Probably should be this:
    #set reporting to off
    $command += (' /SQMREPORTING="0"')
    #Add Browser Account
    $command +=(' /BROWSERSVCSTARTUPTYPE="Disabled"')
    #Add Backup path
    $command +=(' /SQLBACKUPDIR="{0}"' -f $backuppath)

  • SQL Server 2012 - applying SP2 breaks SSRS Report Builder

    Hi,
Had SQL 2012 (was 11.00.2845) and SSRS configured and working.
Applied SQL 2012 SP2 (server now at version 11.0.5058.0 (X64).
But when I goto the typical "http://server/ReportS_INST1 - reports still work ok, but clicking on Report Builder looks like it starts the download and then errors.
The error is "Application validation did not succeed.  Unable to continue.".
Clicking on Details gets the message below.  I understand it thinks it has a version mismatch, but anyone know what the resolution should be?
    Thanks
    Matt

    Hello,
It seems to me somebody applied SP2 for SQL Server 2012 on an instance that has installed SQL Server 2012 SP1 CTP 4. CTP4 is not
    the final version of SP1.
    http://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/
My suggestion is to uninstall SP2 (using Control Panel), download and apply SP1 from the following link, and then apply SP2 again.
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35575
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server 2012 DB Engine does not start (clean install with server 2012 and 2008 R2)

I'm trying to do clean installation of SQL server 2012 on Server 2012 (which is runnning as a VM on ESX server) and getting this "wait on the DB engine recovery failed" message. Initially, I though this issue was related to some permission issues
but changing the permission or service accounts didn't help. I'm not seeing any "denied" messages in the log files either. Even with Server 2008 R2 (clean built VM), the installation gives the exactly the same error messages.
My setup is purely for test purpose; so, the security is not a concern. Can someone help or give me a clue where to look?

    Hi Nababoya:
As you are telling this is a test installation process...
In the logs i m seeing the error message "An error occurred while processing the log for database 'model'.  If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.".
    1) If the SQL Services was installed successfully and SQL Service was not able to start because of model database issue...
1.1) If you have model database SQL back file, start the SQL Server in single user mode with minimum configuration and try to restore MODEL database
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlserverfaq/archive/2011/05/11/inf-hey-my-sql-server-service-is-not-starting-what-do-i-do.aspx
1.2) If you don't have backups., try to rebuild the system databases but make sure that you are not losing any data critical data on master and SQL Jobs on MSDB
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd207003%28v=sql.110%29.aspx#RebuildProcedure
    2) As if this is a new installation try to repair the instance with the help of setup media file
    3) If the repair option fails., the last option wipe out the complete SQL Server components from Services.msc and Registries and start new installation.
    4) Make sure when you are doing un-installation all the required SQL Server components on services.msc should be in stop state.
Hope this helps and let me know any questions...

  • SQL Server 2012 - Clustered installation fails - cannot locate MSIs

    Hi forum
I have a query relating to SQL Server 2012 installation, on Windows Server 2012 R2 - SQL Server is Enterprise, Windows is SQL Server Standard Edition.
Our windows team have created two Windows Server 2012 machines, and installed and got cluster services running.
We've tried the installation of SQL Server 2012 RTM, slipstream SP1 and slipstream SP2, and all come up with an error during the installation - I've even tried the trial version of SQL Server 2012 (SP1), just in case there is a media issue.
Immediately after the window which it is installing the installation files, we get the error:
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
Failed to retrieve data for this request.
You'll see in the logfile of the installation below, that the installer cannot locate specific MSI files
    e.g.
    (01) 2015-03-02 11:29:18 Slp: Sco: File 'E:\x64\setup\x64\sql_fulltext.msi' does not exist
    (01) 2015-03-02 11:29:18 Slp: Sco: File 'E:\x64\setup\x86\sql_fulltext.msi' does not exist
    (01) 2015-03-02 11:29:18 Slp: Sco: File 'E:\x64\setup\x64\sql_dq.msi' does not exist
    (01) 2015-03-02 11:29:18 Slp: Sco: File 'E:\x64\setup\x86\sql_dq.msi' does not exist
I've expanded and checked the ISO / IMG files and these files do not exist.
I'd suspect media corruption, however, the installer works fine on a stand-alone machine, and the same files are missing from two separate sets of installation media - so I think that rules it out.
If someone could give us a clue over what the problem is, we'd really appreciate it - we're trying to create a 2012 availability group setup, so need cluster services...
    Many thanks
    Carl.

    Hello,
What the summary.txt log file says? Could you share the content of that file with us?
Have you tried to copy the media to a local drive, unzip the ISO file into a folder and run SQL Server setup from there.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,

Has anyone come across SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU8/9 failing to install with a “Failed to retrieve data for this request.” error.
The error is too generic for a useful search on web, for me at least anyway.
Had no problems patching a whole bunch of other servers in the same environment.
I’m no good at reading these error logs. For some reason the primary replica is referenced in the detailed log???
The CU8/9 patch has been run by both Domain Admins and local Admin with no luck.
We are trying to patch a secondary failover replica. (SharePoint 2013 is installed on this server.)
This is from the summary log:

    Hello SQL Ranger,
Thanks for posting the detailed log. I dont have exact solution for this but I can give you some hint what could be reason patch has failed below message points to fact that there is some issue with account which is used to install CU patch.Have alook at
below log.It says that when patch was trying to get details from other node in cluster it was not able to.

IMO I strongly feel it is issue with the account. Microsoft has also documented about this for SQL Server 2008 .Have a look at following links
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2000257
Please also assign privilege mentioned in below link

  • Run Reporting services 2005 with databases housed on SQL Server 2012?

Hi, I have a RS 2005 install in which the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB databases reside on a different SQL Server 2005 server. I am planning to upgrade DB server to 2012 and would like to keep SSRS as 2005.As a second phase I will upgrade SSRS2005
to SSRS 2008. So I would be running something like this:
Server A: SQL 2005 Reporting Services
Server B: SQL 2012 database engine - housing ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB
    Is this configuration supported?

    Hello,
    According to the
BOL, Report Server service checks the database version at startup. If the report server is connected to a database that is an earlier version, the report server will update the database during startup. If you have a newer report server database, you
cannot use it with an earlier version of a report server instances.
In that case, the earlier versions of SQL Server Database Engine that can be used to host the SSRS report server databases. For example, In SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, we can use either SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005 to host the databases, for
SSRS 2012, we can use SQL Server 2012,2008 R2,2008,2005.
Based on my test, In the Reporting Services 2005 Configure Manager, we can create a new database on a remote SQL Server 2012 database engine and the Initialization is successful.
In this way, the databases are created from the script file which installed with the Reporting Services instance, you can find the Catalog.sql and CatalogTempDB.sql  under folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer.
However, when upgrade the existing ReportServer database and ReportServerTempDB database on the SQL Server 2012 by restore from a backup, we cannot use this existing database for Reporting Services 2005 and get the following message:
The database version (162) does not match your reporting serivces installation. And the initialization failed.
In your case, you can host the ReportServer database and ReportServerTempDB database of SSRS 2005 on SQL Server 2012 database enginer by create a new database from Reporting Services 2005 Configure Manager. But you cannot use the existing
database which upgrade to SQL Server 2012.

  • How do you create a buffer of a geometry in SQL Server 2012?

    Hello,
I am new to SQL Server 2012 and spatial data. I built a geometry object of coordinates from a polygon that I stored in a database.  The code is below:
    DECLARE @digb GEOMETRY;
    SET @digb = GEOMETRY::STGeomFromText('POLYGON ((-79.927138 40.362654, -79.91883 40.364224, -79.915966 40.361067, -79.917897 40.359266, -79.927398 40.360142, -79.927138 40.362654))', 4269);
I am using SRID 4269 (Latitude/Longitude NAD83).  I have no issues getting this geometry to load properly when the query is executed. (shown below)
My problem is that I am unable to create a valid buffer of 150 feet on this geometry.  I have tried using these 3 statements below (I assumed BufferWithCurves() would be the one that would work); however, ALL of them returned to an invalid buffer of
    the polygon (shown below):
    -     DECLARE @digbb GEOMETRY = @digb.STBuffer(2);
    -     DECLARE @digbb GEOMETRY = @digb.BufferWithCurves(2)
    -     DECLARE @digbb GEOMETRY = @digb.BufferWithTolerance(@BufferSize,250.0,1);
Does anyone have any idea of how creating this buffer of a geometry object (polygon mentioned above) in SQL Server 2012?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Nick

    Hi Nick,
BTW, please do ask questions on the forum, that's what it's for. I only meant "if my explanation in that specific answer was unclear, let me know and I'll clarify". Feel free to start a new thread for each topic because that way, it's
might be easier for folks to search on.
    Specific answers:
I haven't worked directly with the MapInfo loader but if you're working with SQL Server, I assume what they may be doing is looking for "geodesic SRIDs" that SQL Server supports (the ones listed in sys.spatial_reference_systems) and loading those
as geography, else geometry. That may be a good thing to do.
If you want to decide yourself, here's some (short) background.
Only SQL Server (I think PostGIS might have added it) has separate geography and geometry types. Everyone else always uses "geometry" and gives you (maybe) the ability to convert between SRIDs in the database. SQL Server doesn't have
this built-in; you'd need to use a library like PROJ4.
You can use geometry type to refer to geodesic SRIDs, but it doesn't have a way to "take the area using spatial instances in decimal degrees and come up with meters". So, if you only use it to display on a map, it will display correctly.
Or close enough. Same with intersects, intersection and the like. But anything like area, distance, or, in your case buffer using a specific number of meters, you need to use geography.  You could have gotten somewhat similar-looking
results with geometry by making your input to STBuffer a sufficiently small fraction, but it would be a guess on your part, not a "150 feet" buffer.
You can't CAST/CONVERT between geometry and geography because they didn't want people to assume that these would do SRID conversion. However, there is a codeplex library "SQL Server Spatial Tools" (http://sqlspatialtools.codeplex.com/) that
has two methods: VacuousGeometryToGeography and vice-versa, that does the equivalent (but optimized) of taking one type, spitting it out in well-known text format, then using it to initialize the other type. Or you can do this in your own code.
In general, geography is for anything geodesic; geometry is for planar or projected coordinate systems (e.g state plane coordinate systems in US, that don't use Long/Lat). But geography is slightly slower in calculations (like intersects) because it's more
complex than simple Euclidian geometry. And folks in other platforms are used to using "geometry" and having the platform do the (sometimes fairly expensive) conversions on-the-fly. Or maybe you don't care about the area, distance, etc.
Even in the geography type, WKT specifies (Long Lat) not (Lat Long). This is because the OGC standard doesn't distinguish and calls things (X Y), and if you think about it, (X Y) is (Long Lat) not (Lat Long). The SQL Server geography-specific method MakePoint
has latitude first as a parameter. OGC or SQL/MM standard methods and property names start with "ST" in SQL Server (e.g. STIntersects); SQL Server-specific methods and properties do not (e.g. MakePoint, ReorientObject).
Finally, attempting to do spatial calculations with unlike SRIDs (e.g. intersects between SRID 4269 and 4326 instance) returns NULL.
One more post coming on this thread with some info/links.
    Cheers, Bob
