Startup Permissions & File Permissions

Recently, something went wrong within my computer. I'm not sure what it was, but a lot of the file permissions got screwed up. I can no longer use VMware Fusion, as it claims that it does not have the rights to run the program and to access all directories it uses for files, and so on. Also, at startup, I get a whole flood of warning messages saying that startup items were omitted due to lack of correct permissions. Is there some way to just set all file permissions back to default to end this misery?
I have already spent two days researching, and I'm wondering if someone has found a way to solve this.
Keep this in mind: Most people will say, "Reinstall your OS and all your programs." Here is my problem: I purchased this computer legally with a huge bundle of software, including CS5 and Final Cut Studio. They are both legal, but unfortunately, I don't have the installation stuff for them. So, does anyone have any suggestions?
I don't want to re-install my OS - that would hurt everything I have.
My computer specs, because someone is bound to ask for them:
Intel Core i5
8GB RAM
512MB VRam
MacOSX Snow Leopard (10.6, I believe)
In dire need of good help! Thanks, I'm glad I found this community. If this question has already been answered, please link me the page. I couldn't find it.

Here is something else that may help you: I tried using the Disk Utility to repair the permissions, but it simply does this every time I tell it to repair the permissions:

  • Copying startup-config file

    Hi,
    I have one armed mode CSS11503. I can't sync. both Load balancers.
    Is it possible to copt master's startup-config file via ftp and modify than paste in slave one?

    you can copy the config from one css to a ftp server.
    First create an FTP record in config.
    Then use the command 'copy startup-config ftp '
    Edit the file and adjust circuit ip addresses and app settings.
    Then copy it into the standby CSS with the command
    copy ftp startup-config

    OK.
    Try this:
    conf t
    service compress-config
    And see if that helps.
    If not, see if you can tftp the running config off the router and TFTP it back to startup-config:
    copy run tftp
    copy tftp start
    Then you can try a reload and see if it is cured.
    I googled and found a few cases where alot of ACLs or NAT rules could cause MALOC errors (you would see those in your logs) when implemented and could manifest itself in this condition, which could be cured after the next reload, which is why I suggested that.
    Of course, dont be remote when you do this and only do it during a maintenance window.

  • Startup batch file not working on WinXP S.P.2

    I have Oracle database release 10.1.0.2.0. And until recently, it started up and shut down easily from 2 batch files that I used. Luckily, although they don't work now, I can still open Oracle by using the [ Administration Tools | Services ] tabs and manually start the required services. When I click on my startupOracle.bat file now - the dos window that appears seems to zoom by so fast - and nothing gets started. So, of course, I'm relieved that I can still operate
    Oracle software. I'm wondering if the fact that the batch files aren't working is a symptom of another ( general computer ) problem I might have. Here is the startup batch file which used to work , but not now
    startupOracle.bat
    @echo off
    %systemdrive%
    REM #
    echo.
    echo You are about to start Oracle Services and Database
    echo.
    set /p Input=Do you want to continue? (Y=Yes N=No) =
    IF /i "%Input%"=="Y" (goto Proceed)
    exit /b
    :Proceed
    echo Oracle Instance and Services Startup in progress
    echo.
    Net start OracleCSService
    Net start OracleDBConsoleorcldata
    Net Start OracleOraDb10g_home1iSQL*PLUS
    Net Start OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener
    Net Start OracleServiceORCLDATA
    echo.
    echo Oracle ORCL Instance and Services Startup completed Successfully
    echo Good Bye
    echo on
    EXIT /B

    Hi there,
    Thanks for getting back to me.
    Suddenly everything started working and I hadn't pushed out any fixes to users and it just started to work again.
    Anyway I am just relieved.

  • ACE Startup-config file location

    Hello,
    I was reading the ACE docs and it sounds like the startup-config file should be listed under disk0: but I don't see it there. Can someone point out where the startup-config file is.
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi MICHAEL,
    Upon startup, the ACE loads the startup-configuration file stored in Flash memory (nonvolatile memory) to the running-configuration file stored in RAM (volatile memory). When you partition your ACE into multiple contexts, each context contains its own startup-configuration file.
    Flash memory stores the startup-configuration files for each existing context. When you create a new context, the ACE creates a new context directory in Flash memory to store the context-specific startup-configuration files. When you copy a configuration file from the ACE, you create a copy of the configuration information of the context from where you executed the command.
    To display the directory contents of a specified file system, use the dir command in Exec mode. This command displays a detailed list of directories and files contained within the specified file system on the ACE, including names, sizes, and time created. You may optionally specify the name of a directory to list.
    The syntax for this command is:
    dir {core: | disk0:[directory/][filename] | image:[filename] | probe:[filename] | volatile:[filename]}
    The keywords and arguments are:
    •core:-Displays the contents of the core: file system.
    •disk0:-Displays the contents of the disk0: file system.
    •image:-Displays the contents of the image: file system.
    •probe:-Displays the contents of the probe: file system. This directory contains the Cisco-supplied scripts. For more information about these scripts, see the Cisco 4700 Series Application Control Engine Appliance Server Load-Balancing Configuration Guide.
    •volatile:-Displays the contents of the volatile: file system.
    •directory/-(Optional) Contents of the specified directory.
    •filename-(Optional) Information that relates to the specified file, such as the file size and the date it was created. You can use wildcards in the filename. A wildcard character (*) matches all patterns. Strings after a wildcard are ignored.
    For example, to list the files in the disk0: file system, enter:
    host1/Admin# dir disk0:
    host/Admin# dir disk0:

  • Can anyone advise me on AVG Secure Search startup and file tree leftover bloat removal suggestions?

    I recently used the solution provided at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/927950?page=2#answer-364990 by KerriB. It worked. However, I still found traces of the bloatware in two other places. Not sure if I should remove them, or not. Suggestions? I've included images of the locations (slightly edited for security reasons).
    One is in my startup programs. To access: Mouseover an open space on your desktop. Press the Windows key and the R key at the same time. A dialog box pops up. Type in msconfig. Choose the startup tab. This lists all the programs that are starting at startup. As you can see, VProtect Application and ROC_roc_ssl_v12 are listed as manufacturer unknown, but in the file tree, they are in C:\Program Files\AVG Secure Search.
    The other location is accessed via Start, then choosing Computer, Local Disk (C:) (your local disk might be a different letter, obviously) , Program Files. As you can see, there exists an entire folder FILLED with AVG Secure Search items.
    I do have an open support ticket with AVG on this matter, but it being the weekend, I may not hear back for a couple of days. I will let everyone know what they advise when I do hear back from them.
    UPDATE:
    I have complained to AVG, and they offered me a free license for their paid AVG Premium security 2012 edition ... o.O ... anyway, I wrote them back asking about the above left-overs and they responded by sending me a download for a special uninstaller (which you have to install - go irony!). I've included an image of that email (image3).
    After running their uninstaller, I ran a system clean-up, and a deep cleaning run of Advanced Systemcare (my favorite cleanup utility), did a restart, then did a search for "AVG".
    As you can see (image 4), I *STILL* had a folder full of AVG accessed by going to Start, Computer, C:\.
    I did a secure shred delete (again, and Advanced Systemcare tool, but simply deleting probably would be fine) of this AVG folder. Again, I ran a system clean-up, and a deep cleaning run of Advanced Systemcare (my favorite cleanup utility), did a restart, then did a search for "AVG". This time, nothing came up. Great! right? NO. I wanted to be *SURE* it was ALL gone, so I opened Windows Defender (the included firewall that comes with Windows 7), expanded the menu on drives to scan, and low-and-behold, look, what do you know, a HIDDEN $AVG folder (image 5)!
    Now I have to view all hidden folders to find it. That is done by going to Start, Control Panel, (change View By: to Small Icons), Folder Options, (popup window), View Tab, then check the selection dot beside "Show hidden files, folders, and drives", Apply, OK (see image 6 for the walk-through). Now go back to Start, Computer, C:\, and it should show the hidden $AVG folder. If that doesn't show it, you can also do a Search, and delete the folder from the Search results. AGAIN, I ran a system clean-up, and a deep cleaning run of Advanced Systemcare (my favorite cleanup utility), did a restart, then did a search for "AVG".
    I now feel I am completely free of AVG. I hope this helps you get rid of it too!

  • IMovie 11 Freezing at startup and file structure

    Hi,
    I know others have asked about iMovie 11 freezing at startup. I haven't, however, seen much discussion of the event file structure. To solve the freezing startup, I put all the event directories (folders)  in a temp folder and brought only the necessary ones back into the iMovie Events folder, checking after each "move" that iMovie would start. I'm not thrilled about this approach, because it seems like iMovie could freeze anytime and I'd be back to square one. Anyway, my question concerns the directory structure of each event folder.
    One of my events, Halloween, has three clips *.dv, an iMovie Data file, and three subdirectories: iMovie Movie Cache, iMovie Thumbnails, and iMovie Waveforms. iMovie Thumbnails has three clips *.mov and its own iMovie Movie Cache directory. The two iMovie Movie Cache directories seem to have the same content.
    This doesn't make sense to me. Why two iMovie Movie Cache directories with the same content? What can I safely delete if iMovie starts freezing.
    Thanks!
    Bruce

    Thank you. What about the iMovie Data file, can I delete that, too? Also, do you know why iMovie Thumbnails has its own copy of iMovie Movie Cache? Lastly, are these folders (the ones I can delete) the ones that seem to confuse iMovie 11 and freeze it upon startup? I went to an Apple store, but the "genius" had a limited knowledge of iMovie 11. Where does one find out about these things!
    Thanks again,
    Bruce

    My Mac shows file with question mark, what now.

    Press the power button down to force a emergency use only hardware shutdown.
    Press and hold the Option/alt key on the built in keyboard, boot the machine.
    If MacintoshHD appears, select it and click the arrow, then in System Preferences > Startup Disk reset that. Done.
    Sometimes a NVRAM reset is required then the above done again.
    Folder with question mark issue
    ..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    If MacintoshHD doesn't appear, or if it boots to gray screen or other issues, then it's more complicated of a fix, but once inside OS X then reset the Startup Disk.
    Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
    ..Step by Step to fix your Mac
    You might need this if you don't have a recent backup and your problem is software related, Disk Utiltiy can't fix the drive and recommends you backup, erase and install.
    .Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
    If Disk Utility + Hardware Test shows no boot drive, then you have a dead drive or cable, or Mac issue.

  • Hi, I'm using Illustrator CS6 and at startup preferences file is corrupt... Why?

    Please help me.

    palmamor,
    You may try the (relevant parts of the) list.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • DW CS4 crashes at startup - initializing files

    I have been using DW CS4 for a while now without any issues.
    However, as of last night whenever I start DW CS4 DW goes through
    the startup procedure and then stops as soon as the screen says
    "Initializing files". At that point, windows Vista takes over with
    the crash message and the program stops loading.
    I have unistalled and reinstalled DW several times as well as
    deleting the preferences (which I dislike since my DW is highly
    customized) No luck so far.
    As a background, I should add that last week a client was
    nice enough to help me buy the Adobe suite premium (the one with
    almost all the goodies) at the partner price. So I installed it,
    all of it minus Dreamweaver. DW worked fine with the suite for
    several days so I don;t think that's what's going on, but I feel I
    should disclose it.
    My system is an Intel quad core with 8gb of Ram and Vista 64
    bit.
    Dreamweaver CS3 thankfully still works fine so I will be able
    to use that for work until I figure this out. I hope someone can
    help me out because this is a real big problem for me. Thank
    you.

    There is an an item in the Dreamweaver FAQ entitled Dreamweaver crashes on startup.
    In all probability, you have a corrupt file cache. Details on how to delete it are in that article. In some cases, you need to delete the personal configuration folder, but try the file cache first.

  • Startup HTML file

    Hi,
    I have read in a Forms course, the following:
    For example, to display a company logo in your application, you can include the image in the
    HTML page that downloads at application startup rather than retrieving the image from the
    database or the file system. The HTML page can be cached
    This is regarding to image items, so to reduce network traffic, we can display that image in the HTML file that downloads at startup,rather than using image items. My question is, what is that html page? Where can i find it / edit it, to include a image, to display at runtime of Forms application?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    in the logo= formsweb.cfg file, you can include an image stored on the Application Server via a virtual path (like /forms/icons/my_image.jpg)

  • 2610 Factory Reset and Startup Config Files

    Hi all;
    I have a used 2610 which I did a factory reset on. I am able to get into the IOS and edit/change the config.
    However after editing and trying to save using the command:
    copy run start
    I get prompted to save the config to a file name/location which ultimately fails. Then on reboot it goes into the "basic setup" sequence again never saving to the config I'm trying to save.
    The IOS ver. is 12.0(3)T and I do have the latest ver. and an TFTP program to upgrade, but I would like to create a config and save it first.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. Steve

    I cannot locate it anywhere in on the machine. When I did the install I allowed it to install X11 and then deleted the folder later. I'm afraid that's what caused it. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening? I'm not exactly Terminal-savvy...
    Thanks...Jeff

  • Apple Startup Audio File Location

    Where is the audio file that is used when starting up? I would like to change the audio file, of me singing the Opera, instead of the infamous Apple startup sound. Any ideas?

    The normal startup chime is in the computer's firmware, not on the hard drive, and cannot be changed by customers.

  • StartUP class file

    How to specify start up class in J2ee server.I want to load this file at start up

    Hi,
    1)
    create a servlet with an init method. Put what you want to execute at server startup time in that init method. For example :
    public class RunAtStartup extends HttpServlet {
    public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException
         System.out.println("Hello world at startup !!");//what you want to execute
         super.init(config);
    public void service(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
    throws IOException
    2) in your web.xml file add the following lines :
    (this is for tomcat)
    <servlet-name>
    RunAtStartup
    </servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>
    RunAtStartup
    </servlet-class>
    <load-on-startup> // this is for tomcat...i don't know for j2ee server
    -2147483646
    </load-on-startup>
    That's it!
    Hope this help !
