Static and small dimension table should I use lookup

Hi Gurus,
I am creating interface to load my fact table.
Generally for different codes to replace with surrogate keys I use dimension table for look-up in interface.
but I have question if dimension table is very small and has only static values like
Sur_key, Code, Description.
1, C, Create
2 , R, Redeem
in such case if in interface for fact table, I just write expression "if source_table.column=C then 1 else 2".
Please advice if this is better way or not.
Thanks in advance.

I agree - it is much better practice to use lookups to populate surrogate keys. Using hard-coded values in code requires the developer to always remember that dependency on dimensional data and can cause unexpected results down the line if the keys are updated or are inconsistent across environments.

  • Multiple 'logical joins' between a fact table and one dimension table

It appears that one cannot create multiple ‘logical joins’ between a fact table and one dimension table in OBIEE using the Oracle BI Administration Tool. For example, considering a Business Model with a dimension table TIMES and a fact table FACT containing START_TIME and END_TIME, we would like to create separate logical joins from FACT to TIMES for the START_TIMEs and END_TIMEs? Obviously, the underlying foreign keys can be created, but as far as I can tell the Oracle BI Administration Tool doesn’t support this. The workaround would be to replicate the TIMES table, but that’s ugly.
    I seek an alternative approach.

Try this. Create an two aliases for the TIMES dimension (Start & End) in the Physical Layer and then remove foreign key to the "Parent" Times dimension. Create the Foreign Key in the Physical Layer to the new aliases and then create the complex joins in the BMM Layer to the new aliases as well. This will allow you to present both dates within the same table in the Presentation Layer. Not the most elegant solution but it works.

  • Resolving loops in a star schema with 5 fact tables and 6 dimension tables

    Hello
I have a star schema, ie 5 FACT tables and 7 dimension tables, All fact tables share the same dimension tables, some FACT tables share 3 dimesnsions, while other share 5 dimensions.
I did adopt the best practices, and as recommended in the book, I tried to resolve them using Context, as it is the recommended option to Alias in a star schema setting.  The contexts are resolved, but I still have loops.  I also cleared the Multiple SQL Statement for each context option, but no luck.  I need to get this resoved ASAP

    Hi Patil,
It is not clear what exactly is the problem. As a starting point you could set the context up so that it only covers the joins from fact to dimension.
    Fact A, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, and Dim 4
    Fact B, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, Dim 4 and Dim 5
    Fact C, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, Dim 4 and Dim 6
    Fact D, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 3, Dim 4 and Dim 7
    Fact E, joins Dim 1, Dim 2, Dim 4 and Dim 6
If each of these are contexts are done and just cover the joins from fact to dim then you should be not get loops.
If you could lay out your joins like above then it may be possible to specify the contexts/aliases that should work.

  • Two fact and one dimension table

    Hi folks
i am new to this field ( 3 months ), my TL has given me one task i have to finish it up today itself, Can anyone one give me some idea how to implement
    req. The req is
    1. there are 2 fact and one dimension table is there, i have to create reports on Quaterly and monthly basis by using one dimension table.
Can any one tell me what all are the steps in need to follow
2.What is standalone and integrated systems?
    Regards
    Reddy

    Hi
If u r having mapping keys for quarter level n monthly level then create a Alias for the dimension table.Use the original dim table for quarter level mapping and the alias dim for monthly level.

I own an iPad2 and run my business on Dell PCs and Small Business Server. I use Logmein Hamachi to gain access between PCs. I have downloaded Logmein to my IPad 2 and want to access my PCs. Would appreciate any help with this process.

On the Iphone or Ipad you have 2 choices, both of which do the same thing.
    1. Use Safari to log onto Logmein website, where your PCs r listed. Choose which one u want & log onto it.
    2. Use Logmein Ignition w 1time purchase fee & it semi automates the process.

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • If i want to create and print address labels should i use contacts or a spreadsheet

I am new MAC user.  I want to create a separate contact and address list for my Christmas card list.  Should I use contacts or should I create a spreadsheet and do a mail merge? I am thinking Contacts should be easier to manage and maintain.
    Thanks
    Missy

As long as your contacts are in reasonable order and represent the people to be shown on mailing labels, I think you will find Contacts a much easier way to handle this. Starting with Office 2010 for Windows and probably carrying on to Office 2011:Mac, MS changed Mail Merge somehow and I now find it much less intuitive to use and you will have your futility exercised!
I maintain the computers for a small museum where I volunteer and used to do all the mailing label in Office 2007:Win. Then someone decided to upgrade the computers to Office 2010:Win and it now takes me three times as much time and three times the amount of ruined label pages to get what I can do at home on Office 2008:Mac in a few minutes.
If your list need a lot of editing--especially mailing format changes--you may be better off with the spreadsheet.

  • Help on  Setting logical Levels  in Fact tables and on Dimension tables

    Hi all
Can any body provide any blogs or any king of material on what exactly is levelling .
Like after creating the Dimensional hierarchies we need to set the logical levels for the LTS of fact tabels ri8 .So what is the difference between setting logical levels to fact tabels and also Setting levelling on Dimension tables .
Any kind of help is appreciated
    Thanks

I have read these blogs ,but what my question is
Setting the logical levels in LTS of Fact tables i understood .
But we can also set the logical levels for dimensions also ri8 .I didn't understand why do we set the logical levels for dimensions .Is there any reason why we go with the levelling at dimensions
    Thanks

  • Is the transformation between XML document and 2 dimensions table important?

    To everyone:
I am trying to write a paper on this topic.first ,i want to ask whether the transformation between XML data and table in RDBMS is important, because xml data is suitable to transfer from a point to another, but not for storage,so when the transfer begin a program(in DB2,the program is DB2 extender)should change the data format in table into a xml document. And vice versa, the destination point receive the xml document, maybe the same program would store it in table.
so i wonder if such a program exists in the Oracle8i or later version, and the detail about how the program realizes above funciton.please tell me where can i find related paper or materials.

thanks! That is all oracle XDK is for. You can transform query results to xml and xml back into RDBMS. Infact Oracle provides much more flexible way than a DB2 extender does. In DB2 you need to give a DAD before you get any XML. Oracle relies on the direct transformation of query results into XML and adds flexibility of XSL ontop of the data.
You can get more information on XML technology section of OTN.
Once you write the article can we get a chance to see it.

  • What type of internal table should I use based from my scenario...

    Hello Experts,
I am currently having a dillema here because I am trying to optimize a certain
part of a report where in the internal table contains around 300,000 lines of
records. The original internal table is of type standard table. So what the original
programmer did was to delete certain records in a given condition then sort it
by fields 1 and 2 in ascending order. Now, it then loops through that internal table
but gives run time error because it exceeded the limit in our prod server which is only 10 mins.
Now what I did was to try modifying the internal table to make it of type sorted. This is to eliminate
the sort statement. I dont know if what I am doing is right. Help would be greatly appreciated and
rewarded. Thanks a lot guys and take care!

  • For custom tables should we use UTC for date/time fields

    A general question.
Can anyone confirm that SAP does seem to be moving towards storing date/time in UTC format?
We're building custom tables and we're making it a standard to store date/time fields in UTC format.
    Regards,
    Lavaughn

    Hello Lavaughn,
I can not speak for SAP, but from my personal experience TimeStamps are the state of the art to store time date info in db tables. Even with date/Time fields a conversion to the local timezone is necessary. Of course you can reuse your db definition on dynpros. But since UI and business logic will be divided anyway this is also not really a valid point.

  • Running a small business--which should I use?

I would like to keep a business client database. I don't know whether to use AppleWorks, iCal/Address Book, or Palm Desktop, which came with my Mac. I like iCal because of its reliable reminders for meetings and other business related events, but the address book does not have a mail merge feature, making it useless for generating mailings. (Too bad, because sometimes the calendar reminds you that you need to send a letter to somebody, and it would be nice to be able to do it with a touch of a button right from your calendar program.) AppleWorks has a database with mail merge, but it has no calendar function. Palm Desktop has both the calendar and contact list with mail merge capabilities, but I don't know what the future of it is. I wish the various software programs "talked to" each other better in this day and age. What would you guys suggest I use?

    Tim,
If you're worried about 'the future of' Palm Desktop, then AppleWorks is probably not your best choice. AppleWorks has reached the end of its development cycle, and indications are that there will be no further updates to it. While it will work with the new crop of MacIntel machines, using Rosetta, that's about as far into the future as there's any guarantee.
That said, AppleWorks does, as you've noted, offer the possibility of using mail merge (for printed mailings), which could be the deciding factor.
If you want to send email, rather than printed mail, then depending on the extent of your mailing list, and the degree of personalization you want, a combination of Address Book and Mail might serve your purposes.
Your set of 'standard letters' could be kept as a set of Draft messages with subject lines, but with no listed recipient. To send a letter, open, then Copy the draft. Close the draft, open a New message, and paste the draft contents into the body of the new message. Add a subject line, then address the message and send it.
If you're sending to more than one person, you can set up a group in Mail. Create a new folder, then drag the names you want into this folder. To address a message to everyone in the group, click in one of the address fields in the message, then type in the first few letters of the group name. Double click the name of the group in the list that appears (or press return or tab if the correct name is the only one listed, or the one that is highlighted) to populate the address field with all the addresses in the group.
To avoid address creep, I place my own address in the To; field, and the rest of the addresses in the BCc field. Each recipient then gets a message with only one address visible (mine).
"What?" you say, "No recommendation regarding Palm Desktop?"
Only because I haven't used it. When Claris Organizer (which became palm Desktop) first appeared, a desk planner (eg.Day-Timer) served my purposes well, and was much more portable than the desktop computers I used at home and at work, with only sneakernet to connect them. Now that I'm retired, have a much more complicated schedule, and use an iBook with wireless networking, I'm finding more use for an electronic calendar, and have started to use iCal. I haven't compared the features of the two, so I'm in no position to recommend either over the other.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Fact table and dimension table

what is the difference b/w fact table and dimension table

A fact table contains numeric values and also contain composite key(i.e collection of foreign key) e.g.. sales and profit. Typically has two types of columns: those that contain facts and those that are foreign keys to dimension  tables.
Dimension tables, also known as lookup or reference tables, contain the relatively static data in the warehouse. It contains character values E.g Customer_name,Customer_city.
Dimension tables store the information you normally use to contain queries. Dimension tables are usually textual and descriptive and you can use them as the row headers of the result set.

  • Sizeof fact table and dimension table

    Hi Experts ,
Can you tell me how to measure the size of dimension table and fact tables and how to find the ratio of size of dimension table to the size of fact table.
    Thanks in advance,
    Thanks and Regards
    Ram Kommineni

    Hi,
The ratio of size of fact table to dimension table is ideally should be 10:1. That means the size of the dimension tables should be 10% of the size of the fact table. This serves better in terms of performance.
Whenever you load any cube, you can easily find out the number of records in fact table (E and F table) and the dimension tables. Based on that statistics you can determine the ratio of size in fact and dimension tables.
    Hope this info helps you.
    Regards,
    Yogesh.

  • Facts and Dimension tables.

We have around 6 facts tables and 10 dimensions tables. The ER diagram shows the fact tables are joined. Now how do I arrange these tables in order to form a star schema? Any suggestions?

You should make Joins (foreign keys) between fact tables and dimensions tables on Physical Layer of Administration Tool. The cardinality should be 1 to N, being 1 in table dimension and N in the fact table.
Right click on one element of physical layer, and select 'physical diagram' -> 'Object(s) and all joins'. Then appears all tables. To define foreign keys, select icon 'new foreign keys', first select dimension table and second click over fact table to make a cardinality 1:N.
    Good luck,
    Regards.
