Steps to migrate database backup location to another disk ?

As the database is getting bigger and bigger, the existing disk for backup runs out of space.
We intend to replace it with another disk.
Just would like to seek your advice
1) Do we need to stop SQL Server when we change the backup location ?  Most likely NO
2) Should we change the backup location in Database Maintenance Plan before copying BAK / TRN files across disks ?
3) Can I use the following command for copying files across disks ?
ECHO OFF
xcopy D:\Mybackup\*.* \\DestServer\D$\backup\ /S /Y /E /Q
Thanks

Have you heard about backup compression. If you have SQL server 2008 enterprise you ca take advanatge of backup compression. I have used it and works well.If you have 2008 R2 standard and enterprise both can use backup compression.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb964719(v=sql.105).aspx
Below query will set backup compression for ALL backups on your system
sp_configure 'show advanced options',1
go
reconfigure
go
sp_configure 'backup compression default',1
go
reconfigure
go

  • LYNC 2010 : Steps to migrate from one pool to another pool

    Hi,
    We have LYNC 2010 deployed in 2 site (sit1 & Site2)
Currently all user host on Site1 pool. CMS exist in Site1
we have also mediation role and EDGE role on both site.
we have dial in conference on site1.
Currently public DNS record (for edge and as for reverse proxy) point to Site1.
Certificate Authority for site 1 and and site2 is different. However SAN entries and subject name is same for all certificate and bot CA are public CA.
We have to move all users to site2 pool and will also move CMS to site2 and we have to decommission site1.
What is the step by step process to move users, CMS, Edge server Traffic and Mediation server, reverse proxy?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The migration process from one pool to another pool is similar for from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013.
You can refer to the link below of “Migration from Lync Server 2010 to Lync Server 2013”

  • Where are time Machine Backups Located on External Disk?

I was wondering where time machine backups are located on the external disk , and what permissions you have to have to view them. I recently had to delete an account that time machine was set up on and i am only allowed to see backups in the shared folder on the volume. This is on OSX Server and several computers backup their images to the server
    Thanks in Advance

On my TM drive, there is a folder called Backups.backupdb at the top level. Inside that folder is a folder named the name of my Mac (as set up for Sharing). Inside there are folders named with a date/time stamp of the backup. Inside there are folders named with my Mac's disk names. And in there are the contents of the disk in the same folder hierarchy, but only the files that changed.

  • Why shows the disk information 150GB Backup data, when the TimeMachine Backup is on another disk?

    Hi,
i'm using Time Machine to make my backups to my NAS (Synology DS211j). This is working.
But when i'm using the disk information (about my mac) there are 150GB Backup data stored on the disk of the mac.
What is this for a backup, when time machine backups the data to an external disk?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on Time Machine on a MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac creates automatically "local snapshots" on the startup disk > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html That's why you have 150 GB of backups on the internal drive

  • RMAN backup location

    Hi there
I have a production database oracle10g R2 in Redhat 5 . I have been taking disk base backup using catalog.
Now I want restore that database to another server which file system is not identical with production database.
My production database backup location is : /u01/backup/orcl/data/..
My test server do not have same location
    when I restore database
    run { restore database;........}
in test server then it search backup data from /u01/backup/orcl/data/
Please help me to overcome the above situation
    Jamal

The "CATALOG" command (not to be confused with the catalog schema !) is what you need to use.
    See the documentation :
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14194/rcmsynta011.htm#sthref230
After restoring the controlfile, run "CATALOG START WITH /newlocation" in RMAN.
Then, the controlfile would be updated with the new location, thus allowing the RESTORE to search for the backup pieces in the new location.

  • Migrating backup data to another subscription

I am buying a new Azure subscription. The tech support team at Microsoft is moving most of the services and their data to the new Subscription for me, but they do not migrate Azure Backup Service. I want to move my backup vault and data from one Azure
subscription to another. I need to know what are the steps/options to do it.

    Hi,
Though I cannot confirm if it is supported to move backup data to another subscription, in order to migrate data between subscriptions, you will need to contact Azure support.
As you have already contacted support team, communicate with them again to confirm if it is supported to migrate backup data as well.
How do I migrate data and services for my Azure subscription to a new subscription?

  • How to move SQL database from one location to another location i.e. from C' drive to D' drive

Hi, How to move SQL database from one location to another location i.e. from C' drive to D' drive ? please share some link.
    Thanks and Regards, Rangnath Mali

    Hi Rangnath,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to move databased from C drive to D drive.
You can detach Database so that the files become independent, cut and paste the files from source to destination and attach again.
There are two similar posts for your reference:

  • Multiple Backup Locations for Multiple Lightroom Databases

I currently work with two lightroom databases but when I back up the databases, the backups get stored in the same Lightroom Backups folder. The two backups are stored in separate sub-folders but the actual database files have the same name. Thus, the only way to know which backup is for which database if to note the times that the backups were created and use this to determine which backup applies to which database.
It would seem like the actual backup files could be named as per the associated database or the backup location could be specified for each database so that there is less chance for a mistake if a database needs to be restored.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave Mayfield

    Thanks for your reply.
I need the have each LOS ( Location of sale or location of delivery) of Business Partner because we will deliver items for the LOS and not for BP.
As we also need to control (serial numbers) items & services ( field management) I also need to have the LOS as BP.
    As example:
BP name AAA have 30 LOS.
    BP AAA bought 2000 items.
BP AAA ask us to old theses items in warehouse.
BP AAA request to delivery a x quantity in LOS 1, 2,3,4,...
The invoice went to BP AAA, but the deliveries will be to each LOS of BP AAA.
As I said we need to have the field services working side-by-side with serials numbers and services for each LOS of our BP AAA.
So, we have subcustomers from big customer BP AAA.
Do we have any way of having all subcustomers(LOS) as BP, along with the real customer AAA?
    Thanks in advance,

  • The backup location does specified does not contain any backup. Specify another backup location.

We have our server set to backup to an internal HDD (E:), and then copy all the files in E: to different locations for storage (a NAS for instance).  I scheduled a copy to a USB drive, but I can't get the recovery wizard to see the backup it now contains.
I choose "A backup stored in another location" and then "Remote shared folder", as the USB (G:) does not show up in Local drives.  I now need to enter a UNC (it won't accept the "G:\" path), so I shared the USB drive and
enter "\\SERVER\G\2014-09-23", which is the path to the parent of the WindowsImageBackup folder on the USB drive.  At this point I get the above error "The backup location does specified does not contain any backup"
All the files look to have copied OK, and have the same Date Modified as on the server: as far as I can tell it's identical, and yet it won't mount. Help?

    Hi,
I would like to confirm the exact backup process:
When creating the backup, are you choosing "local drives" and then "G:", or Remote shared folder and then \\server\g\folder?
If it is a network path, could you restore it with \\server\g\folder instead?

  • Restore new database form another database backup

It is possible to restore a new database on a new host from old database backup files (after old database failed from media failure)?
I want to do it just for testing purpose.
    I appreciate your help.

Since you hide OS and database version, only a general advice is possible: see the chapter 'restore database to a new host' in the documentation provided for your environment.

  • Migrate database from UTF-8 to AL32UTF8

We've heard that support for the UTF-8 characterset is going to peter out. Our databases are all in the UTF-8 characterset, so we are considering migrating to AL32UTF8. Any issues we need to consider, or is it simply a case of switching the database characterset? The globalization whitepapers I've read don't seem to address this kind of migration.

    Doc ID: Note:123670.1
Subject: Use Scanner Utility before Altering the Database Character Set
    Type: BULLETIN
    Status: PUBLISHED
    Content Type: TEXT/PLAIN
    Creation Date: 02-NOV-2000
    Last Revision Date: 30-OCT-2003
    A) Purpose. ----------- Before altering the character set of a database, check the convertibility of the data before converting. Character set conversions can cause data loss or data corruption. The Character Set Scanner utility provides this 2 features: 1) convertibility check of existing data and potential issues. The Scanner checks all character data in the database including the data dictionary and tests for the effects and problems of changing the character set encoding (characterset). At the end of the scan, it generates a summary and exception report of the database scan. 2) from csscan V1.1 onwards it allows you also to do a check if there is no data in the database that is incorrectly stored. This is used in [NOTE:225938.1] Database Character Set Healthcheck This note gives an example on how the output of the csscan tool looks like and some live examples of how to convert the characterset. Please use the following note: [NOTE:225912.1] Changing the Database Character Set - an Overview as a complete guide to plan the change of the database character set. B) Installation and setup. -------------------------- IMPORTANT: Check for the latest version on technet of the csscan tool for your platform: http://technet.oracle.com/software/tech/globalization/content.html and use this. ( [NOTE:179843.1] Versioning of the Character Set Scanner ) There is one know problem with the characterset scanner for 817: see [BUG:3043474] To install the Character Set Scanner, you must have DBA privileges on the Oracle database. If you encounter "CSS-0xxxx" type errors, first look in the "Character Set Scanner Error Messages " section of above docset. Run csminst.sql to create the needed user and tabels, You can modify the default tablespace for CSMIG by editing the csminst.sql script. Modify the following statement in csminst.sql to assign your preferred tablespace to CSMIG as follows: ALTER USER csmig DEFAULT TABLESPACE tablespace_name; Then run csminst.sql using these commands and SQL statements: cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin set oracle_sid=<your SID> sqlplus "system/manager" SQL>spool csminst.log SQL> START csminst.sql check the csminst.log for errors. or for 9i: cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin set oracle_sid=<your SID> sqlplus "/ as sysdba" SQL>spool csminst.log SQL> START csminst.sql check the csminst.log for errors. [NOTE:232242.1] Character set migration utility schema not installed in 9i / ORA-942 during csminst.sql Now you can run the scanner against this database. C:\>csscan help=y gives the help screen, we will show here some sample outputs of full database scans using the command line. See also Chapter 11 "Character Set Scanner" of the Oracle9i Database Globalization Support Guide Release 2 (9.2) Part Number A96529-01 C) Character Set Scanner Compatibility. --------------------------------------- see [NOTE:179843.1] Versioning of the Character Set Scanner D) There are 3 possible conversion statuses possible ---------------------------------------------------- *** ***************** *** Scanner statuses *** ***************** The Scanner utility reports 3 types of conversion status for each table and row: 1/ CHANGELESS which leads to consider that the object needs no conversion, the codepoint dous not change between the two charactersets for those characters. 2/ CONVERTIBLE which leads to consider that the object needs conversion by export/import. (the target charactersets is NO binary superset of the source characterset) The character itself is know in both charactersets but has another codepoint This is why the ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET <new_character_set>; command is enforcing that the NEW characterset needs to be a BINARY superset of the old one. So you wan't be allowed to use ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET <new_character_set>; 3/ EXCEPTIONAL which leads to consider that the data needs manual updates before conversion or that you have invalid data in the database. Note that the scanner cannot "see" what type of character is stored. It can only compare codepoints and look them up in in the characterset conversion lists of oracle. The scanner checks if in the target characterset the codepoint of the source characterset is a valid codepoint, or that there are mappings to another codepoint it has no knowlegde of the character it suppose to represent. This is a problem if you have stored incorrect data in the database by bypassing the NLS layers. But normally this will lead to the reporting of exceptional data. This information is clearly reported in the 2 following reports automatically generated by the Scanner utility. *** *********************************** *** Reports SCAN.TXT and SCAN.ERR *** *********************************** 1/ SCAN.TXT => objects in the data dictionary requiring an action such as renaming a table => application data requiring an action such exporting/importing data to be converted, updating data, rebuilding indexes, modifying column sizes Example [Data Dictionary Conversion Summary] Datatype Changeless Convertible Exceptional Total ---------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- VARCHAR2 608,343 0 1 608,344 CHAR 2 0 0 2 LONG 29,756 0 0 29,756 CLOB ---------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- Total 638,101 0 1 638,102 [Application Data Conversion Summary] Datatype Changeless Convertible Exceptional Total ---------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- VARCHAR2 16 0 0 16 CHAR 2 1 1 4 LONG 0 0 0 0 CLOB 0 0 0 0 ---------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- -------------- Total 18 1 1 20 [Distribution of Convertible Data per Table] USER.TABLE Convertible Exceptional ----------------------------------------- ---------------- ---------------- SYS.OBJ$ 0 1 U1.T_EXCEPTIONAL 0 1 U1.T_CONVERTIBLE 1 0 ----------------------------------------- ---------------- ---------------- [Distribution of Convertible Data per Column] USER.TABLE|COLUMN Convertible Exceptional ----------------------------------------- ---------------- ---------------- SYS.OBJ$|NAME 0 1 U1.T_EXCEPTIONAL|C1 0 1 U1.T_CONVERTIBLE|C1 1 0 ----------------------------------------- ---------------- ---------------- [Indexes to be Rebuilt] USER.INDEX on USER.TABLE(COLUMN) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYS.I_OBJ2 on SYS.OBJ$(NAME) U1.I_T_CONVERTIBLE on U1.T_CONVERTIBLE(C1) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2/ SCAN.ERR => lists rowids of rows for which data is to be updated because of an EXCEPTIONAL status Example User : SYS Table : OBJ$ Column: NAME Type : VARCHAR2(30) Number of Exceptions : 1 Max Post Conversion Data Size: 33 ROWID Exception Type Size Cell Data(first 30 bytes) ------------------ ------------------ ----- ------------------------------ AAAAASAABAAAAXjABF exceed column size 33 table_M-H_gM-Erer_drM-Bles_franM-5ais ------------------ ------------------ ----- ------------------------------ User : U1 Table : T_EXCEPTIONAL Column: C1 Type : CHAR(12) Number of Exceptions : 1 Max Post Conversion Data Size: 24 ROWID Exception Type Size Cell Data(first 30 bytes) ------------------ ------------------ ----- ------------------------------ AAAAxDAAFAAAABDAAA exceed column size 24 M-EM-IM-HM-KM-LM-]M-NM-OM-AM-BM-QM-@ ------------------ ------------------ ----- ------------------------------ *** *************************** *** 3 statuses => 3 approaches *** *************************** 1/ When objects are in CHANGELESS status, they need not be converted.
