Stock Kernel == vanilla Kernel ?

Hi
is there a difference between the stock/ftp upgraded kernel26  and  then vanilla (ftp.kernel.org) Kernel, are there any patches aplied with the ARCH version ? I mean if both have the same version number ?
triple fault

This is the pkgbuild for the stock kernel, as you can see there are several patches apllied.

  • [solved] Vanilla kernel won't compile on vanilla install

I am new to Arch Linux but not new to other Linux distros. I've encountered somewhat of a strange problem. I wanted to test out some custom kernel modifications on Arch Linux. (Specifically, I have been trying to implement unRAID [ http://lime-technology.com/ ] into a Arch Linux install.) I ran into some problems compiling the modified 2.6.36.2 kernel and figured it was just my modifications. But to my surprise, I am unable to even compile a vanilla kernel on a fresh install (base and devel) of Arch Linux. After further testing, it seems to affect other kernel versions, but only older kernel version. For example, vanilla 2.6.38 compiles fine. I've outlined my process below.
    1. Fresh install of Arch Linux (base and devel)
    2. Installed OpenSSH and configured so I could connect remotely.
    3. Prepare source tree: http://pastie.org/1929380
    4. Accepted defaults on make menuconfig
    5. Full build log: https://pastee.org/gvng5
Then it tanks on this error:
    CC arch/x86/mm/mmio-mod.o
    LD arch/x86/mm/mmiotrace.o
    LD arch/x86/mm/built-in.o
    LDS arch/x86/vdso/vdso32/vdso32.lds
    AS arch/x86/vdso/vdso32/note.o
    AS arch/x86/vdso/vdso32/int80.o
    VDSO arch/x86/vdso/vdso32-int80.so.dbg
gcc: error: elf_i386: No such file or directory
    OBJCOPY arch/x86/vdso/vdso32-int80.so
    objcopy: 'arch/x86/vdso/vdso32-int80.so.dbg': No such file
    make[2]: *** [arch/x86/vdso/vdso32-int80.so] Error 1
    make[1]: *** [arch/x86/vdso] Error 2
    make: *** [arch/x86] Error 2
I've tested on other kernel (old-ish) versions and I get the same error. Any ideas?

I don't what the problem is, but I could not get it to compile with gcc 4.6. I did do a netinstall the first time around though with all the latest packages. Maybe there is some updated package throwing the error? Maybe binutils? No matter though. I don't need gcc 4.6 anyways. I reinstalled Arch with a non-net install (to get the older packages) and it worked. Thanks for the help graysky.
If anyone is in the mood for hunting bugs, you might try a fresh netinstall and reproducing my original steps to see if you can reproduce it. Might be worth reporting.

  • Modifying the stock arch linux kernel and kernel timer frequency

so if i understand correctly, if we want to modify the stock arch linux kernel, we have to pull it off of abs. ie "ABSROOT=. abs core/linux" then modify the pkgbuild, uncommenting out make menuconfig and setting the pkgbase name to something different than stock. ie, "linux-custom" then update the checksums followed by importing the gpg keys, ie "gpg --recv-keys 79BE3E4300411886 and gpg --recv-keys 38DBBDC86092693E" for the kernel and patches. then run makepkg -s.
we can't just run make menuconfig on the current kernel that's installed?
and if we pull the linux kernel from abs to customize, does it already come preconfigured with all the arch changes and settings? like its no different than the current one installed?
i just ask because for the most part, i like the current arch kernel, there are just a few minor things i want to change but kept everything else the same as stock arch linux kernel.
also, i herd arch uses 300hz for its timer. whats the benefits and disadvantage of using 300hz over 1000hz for a desktop system?

orlfman wrote:we can't just run make menuconfig on the current kernel that's installed?
No you can't, because the kernel then has to be compiled so the kernel will run with the different tick rate.

As I understand it from the Wiki, the ABS pulls the PKGBUILD and other arch-specific sources from the ArchLinux script server. However, I don't use the ABS, but pull the files I need directly from the ArchLinux SVN and build using makepkg[1] after making the necessary changes.

You're in for a technical discussion here. This has a reasonably friendly discussion on kernel tick rates.
Basically, higher tick rates = a higher level of timing precision & higher processor load, lower tick rates = lower level of timing precision & lower processor load.
[1] Technically, I use the clean chroot manager package, which is a wrapper for makechrootpkg (which in turn is a wrapper for running makepkg in a clean chroot if I'm not mistaken).

  • What patches are applied to the vanilla kernel to make kernel26?

I tried to find some information on the wiki, but it all it says is "Vanilla kernel with some patches applied". So what patches are applied?
Last edited by tjbp (2011-07-27 13:48:42)

    http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … l26/trunk/ refers to ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/
The paths will change for linux 3.0.

Which wiki page? If you refer to the 'kernel26' package, for patches applied to it see here: http://projects.archlinux.org/linux-2.6-ARCH.git

  • Vanilla kernel with suspend2 support

    Hey people,
I have started using the beyond kernel a while ago, because I wanted a precompiled arch kernel with suspend2 support. I used self-compiled vanilla+suspend2 kernels for a while before that, and they were very stable. With beyond, I first got strange bugs, hard to reproduce, suspending or resuming sometimes failed, and the newest version doesn't work at all.
Just for some testing, I compiled a kernel with the same config and patches as kernel26 AND suspend2 patches included. It seems to work great, much stabler than beyond when suspending.
What I am asking is, how many people would be interested if such a kernel would be maintained in community and what kernel modules they would need (I am planning to do rt2500, rt2x00, nvidia and maybe ATI, more if requested).
Please only submit your vote to the poll if you are either a suspend2 user or interested in using suspend2

Can you give me your definition of "at the moment" please? Or better, name a beyond release where suspend2 was stable. I switched to beyond with 2.6.16 and since then it was always unusable for me. With a vanilla kernel, suspend2 hasn't failed for me in a year or so. With beyond, it failed every time I really needed it.
Admittedly suspend2 may be _generally_ unstable with other patchsets but even still, it'll only take one bulletproof release to invalidate all you are suggesting.
I won't spend the rest of my life waiting for the beyond release that will work. I'd rather do something about it and provide a kernel that is stable and has that very important feature. (And as tpowa wasn't willing to include suspend2 in kernel26 when I asked him, this is the best shot).
Awesome -  I dont think I could have said it in better words - however I did try above >
I have tried many patchsets that had suspend2=swap patches but the never worked or not as well as a vanilla kernel with just suspend2-swap patch.
    Lets do it.

  • Old P3 CPU hangs when starting KMS with stock and ck kernels

Hi, I have an old Pentium 3 machine on which I run Arch. If I try to boot the current stock kernel (or the ck kernel) the system freezes at boot. The system is still responsive, I can login via ssh but the screen is freezed. I nailed down the problem to KMS: booting with the nomodeset kernel option solves the problem. I have no problem in booting the lts kernel with KMS enabled, so I guess something changed between kernel 3.0 and 3.9 in this regard. Is anyone with old hardware experiencing this as well? It's not a big deal since I can live with lts kernel or disable KMS, but nevertheless I'd like to understand and possibly fix it. I can provide more informations on demand (right now I don't know what might be useful).
    Thanks

    snack,
From experience, I have found that trying to use Arch Linux (a leading edge OS) on very old hardware is like trying to plug all the holes in an old wooden leaky boat when all you have is composite materials. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep older hardware working when using leading edge software.
If you are happy to administrator the system using Arch then you may need to remain with linux-lts etc. The other problem I have run into is getting the older APG video cards to work & if you can get them working at a decent resolution getting them to render anything from a browser will bring the system to it's knees.
My suggestion is trying a few Linux systems that are purpose built to be used on older systems. You may even have some luck with "enterprise" OSs such as Scientific Linux or Centos as they use older kernels & software.

  • [SOLVED] Error building vanilla kernel for PS3

I installed all the base packages for ArchPPC and have chrooted into it. I downloaded/uncompressed kernel 2.6.24 from kernel.org and ran `cp arch/powerpc/configs/ps3_defconfig .config`. The first time, I went straight to make after that. That gave me the error "linux-2.6.24/scripts/gcc-version.sh: line 26: printf: #: invalid number". So I ran pacman -Sy gcc3, then edited my Makefile setting HOSTCC=gcc-3.3, HOSTCXX=g++-3.3, and CC=gcc-3.3.
Now when I run make (after doing make clean) the first error I get is:
include/asm/mmu-hash64.h:437: error: `SID_SHIFT' undeclared (first use in this function)
    Any ideas?
Last edited by Erroneous (2008-03-07 21:51:51)

You need a ppc64 cross-compiler to build a ps3 kernel. You can use the crosstool pkgbuilds from here: http://kth5.telekommunisten.net/archlinux/crosstools/
All you need to do is to replace the 32 bit ppc targets with powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu and it should build fine.

  • Building old vanilla kernels

    I've encountered regression in kernel:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22223
To hunt this down, I used tested kernel26 coming from existing ISO-installers.
After this I tried building kernel 2.6.33 by hand, just using old default configs (from installers) and make localmodconfig.
The resulting kernel crashed with long stacktrace.
Then I've tried building the package kernel26-2.6.33  (with different build suffix) by using makepkg way (used the same config file which I got from installed old Arch).
    Result crashed the same way:
    [<c12ce9bd>] panic + 0x4d / 0x100
    [<........>] do_exit + 0x6dc / 0x750
    [<........>] ? kmsg_dump
    ? printk
    oops_end
    no_context
    __bad_area_nosemaphore
    ? __d_instantiate
    ? d_rehash
    bad_area_nosemaphore
    do_page_fault
    ? _security_d_instantiate
    ? _do_page_fault
    error_code
    ? strcmp
    event_create_dir
    ? module_update_tracepoints
    ? tracepoint_update_probes
    event_trace_init
    do_one_initcall
    ? event_trace_init
    kernel_init
    ? kernel_init
    kernel_thread_helper
Then I've repeated this for kernel26-2.6.32.
The stacktrace of the crash was 2x shorter, but it crashed anyway.
Is there any way of doing kernel code regression testing easier way (possible at all) in Arch Linux?
Without this, almost any git bisect command in kernel tree is useless..

    Right?

  • Kernel Build: kernel panic: VFS barf: Request for Assistance

    Good Morning,
Been using Arch for about a year now. No issues. Love it.
I am rebuilding a kernel, to my specs, soley for an educational experience. Stock Arch works peechee, but I need to learn more about linux's internals.
Read the wiki, browsed this board, tried several remedies. No Luck.
I'm missing someting. In my new kernel:
BTW: The kernel sources I'm using is 2.6.11.7, downloaded from "kernel.org". I've sucessfully rebuilt kernels for SuSE, RH, Mandrake, and Fedora (RH derived). To my knowledge, none of these former distros are using UDev.
VFS: doesn't like the UDev naming convention. Then the kernel panics because it can't mount anything.
I've tried rebuilding the kernel with /devfs turned on and off, and also with /dev/pts on and off.. No change in behavior.
I've passed grub's menu.lst the conventional "root=/dev/sdb3"  and it gets farther, then tells me I've got a corrupted superblock. Read one post here where  an individual allwed fschk to do it's magic, and hosed his system, so I did NOT go there. Rebooting the stock Arch kernel brings everything back to life normally.
It appears that my kernel isn't using UDev, thus the new naming convention of my root disk, which is "root=/dev/discs/disc1/part3"
I know my eyes are fading with age, but I'll be damned if I can find an entry anywhere in "make xconfig" that talks about UDev.
I know that I could modify my init scripts to use the older /dev naming conventions and move on, but I don't want to fork my own system from Arch.
I've included my grub menu.lst file, and my .config file.
I'm prettu sure UDev is biting me, and in my ignorance I don;t know how to remedy it.
Any assistance would be sincerely appreciated.

Devfs. Because it insist on using its own non-standard naming format. So if you disable devfs, then the kernel knows only the standard names like /dev/sda.
Fstab is a configuration file, you're supposed to edit it to suite your needs. Forking Arch isn't that easy. ;-)
Look at pacman.conf's NoUpgrade option. If you have a config file you changed manually and want to keep then add it to NoUpgrade. By default Pacman will move your file out of the way to file.pacsave and put the new config in place. By telling Pacman to prefer the old file you'll save some work. Fstab is already in NoUpgrade in the default pacman.conf, which should say enough.

any suggestion or help must be apreciated
    thanks in advance

You upgraded from 2.6.17 to 2.6.19 by any chance?
When you update the Archlinux kernel to 2.6.18, make sure
that you changed the initrd setting in your bootloader
(/boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/lilo.conf). The filename is
                       kernel26.img instead of initrd26.img for kernel26 and
                       kernel26beyond.img for kernel26beyond. For troubleshooting
                       and advanced setup, see
                       http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio

    It's 404
I fixed the link (dropped the l in html).
glenn69 wrote:How do I accomplish this when I cannot get past boot into the OS?
Boot a live cd and chroot (see the wiki on chrooting).
glenn69 wrote:Also, headkase, which log file are you displaying in your post?  I can access my disk via a live cd, but cannot find the appropriate log for my machine.
That's the content of the email that I failed to link to properly.
Does anyone know if there is a bug number for this? I'm experiencing this bug on my MacbookPro 7,1 (2010) too (I am forced to use IDE as sata is not supported on this machine in bios compatibility mode afaik).
The title of this thread is rather non descriptive. How about name it something like:
kernel 3.6 panic ("kernel NULL pointer dereference in pacpi_set_dmamode")

  • Kernel permissions, kernel rights

    Hi
I am upgrading my kernel, but I the actual kernel rights is a mess, so I must re-configure.
Could anyone help me with the file permissions?
    any note?
    thanks!

    Hi,
Markus has given the solution , that's about it.
Just one note, if you have a /sapmnt/<SID>/exe
you better extract your kernel in /sapmnt/<SID>/exe , since SAP server will startup using the kernel files in /sapmnt/<SID>/exe instead of the usual /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run directory.
This issue is specific to NW2004 and above.
During startup SAP Application Server would use the kernel files from /sapmnt/<SID>/exe and using the sapcpe program to sync the kernel with the /usr/sap/<SID>SYS/exe/run directory.
So as a thumb rule, if you have /sapmnt/<SID>/exe.. always extract the kernel to that directory and NOT in /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
