Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
  1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
  2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
  3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
  4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
  5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
  6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
  7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.w

  • My MacBook Pro HD Storage Capacity is getting full with majority of usage classified as Other (126.77GB). What is included as Other and how can I edit and delete unnecessary content?

The Storage capacity on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010, Version 10.10, 4 GB Memory) is getting full. It appears I only have 29.04 GB free of 319.21 GB. The majority of usage is classified as "Other" (126.77 GB) and "Movies" (106.05 GB).  I would like to edit and delete some of the Other content, but what is included in this category? How do I know what is safe to delete? I don't have many documents created. I have saved and filed content from internet sites... do these type of files use a lot of storage capacity (mostly recipes)?
I have very few Apps and have been updating all software regularly.  Mose recent update was Yosemite.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

  • Storage capacity is stated as being full, but all audio, video, apps, docs, etc. only add up to 7.6 GB out of 12 GB.  iTunes shows that I am all of a sudden using 5.6 GB listed under "OTHER".  What happened?

Why is storage capacity shown as full when it is not? Phone shows storage of only 7.6 GB out of 13 GB, but says I have no more storage.  iTunes indicates I am using 5.6 GB under the category "OTHER".  This is a sudden change.  What happened?

  • "storage almost full" message

My wife's iPhone 4 started showing the "Storage Almost Full" message repeatedly. The following actions have been taken:
    1. Deleted iCloud backup for the phone. - Not Fixed
    2. Restored phone - Not Fixed
    3. Bought brand new iPhone 5 and restored from backup - Problem is now on the new phone.
This is obviously an issue with the OS. What is the fix?
My next course of action is to factory restore the iPhone 5 and remove all traces of the backups from the iPhone 4. In the process we are going to lose lots of data that is very important.

Why?  This is completely illogical.  The iCloud backup has nothing to do with the message being displayed.
    riegertml wrote:
    2. Restored phone - Not Fixed
Again, why?  There is completely illogical. Restoring does not remove content from the device.
    riegertml wrote:

Again, why?  If  the same backup is restored to a device of the same capacity the same "Storage full" message will appear.

No, it simply and obviously is not.

Replace the user with one that can read and comprehend the message.

Why?  So more time and effort can be wasted?
Stop being dense.  Connect the iPhone to the computer. Open iTunes.
Manage the content being synced to the device via iTunes.

  • I am trying to download a video on my Ipad 2 but it says my storage is full and to delete Photo or videos but i don't have any

I am trying to download a video on my Ipad 2 but it says my storage is full and to delete Photo or videos but i don't have any

Look at the capacity bar of the iPad in iTunes -  at the bottom of the screen in the iTunes window while the iPad is connected to sync - and make sure that you do have enough space left on the device. If you do have nought space left - quit iTunes, restart the computer and restart the iPad and try again.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
You can also try a reset and see if that helps.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Iphone 4s Storage is full, Photo Stream is over full, cannot psynch with Itunes how do I fix this! Completely shutdown, apps on phone won't run correctly. HELP!!!!

My Iphone 4S storage is full! Phone is not functioning correctly due to full storage.  Tried to backup and psych with Itunes, Back up worked (supposedly) but
Itunes cannot psych due to being over capacity. Can't find how to edit files and delete stuff.

shut down "photo stream" , delete unused apps. export your photos from iPhone to PC and then delete all of your photos. But if you want to keep the photos on phone, maybe you will try some methods to compress the photo size in order to free up more storage.

  • Storage almost full iphone 5 ?

    Hi Guys
Just message on my iPhone 5 that the storage is almost full? and main thing is that i have STILL 10GB free ??? And 3GB used ?
    *** ? Apple ar u taking **** ?

I have a similar problem. My iPad says I've used up 12.4GB of storage & only have 492MB left available to me & I'm always getting the "your storage is almost full" message too.
Only thing is, when I manually add up the total size of each app I have installed (including the size of it's documents & data) in the list under "Usage", it adds up to a total of just 2550MB of space used - a big difference to the 12.4GB it says I've used at the top of my screen!!!.....
Therefore I'm completely missing close to 10GB of storage capacity from my 16GB device. That's about 75% of its storage capacity unavailable to me!! ***??? Why????

  • Why did remaining storage capacity suddenly change from 3.5 GB to 0.5 G???

When I wanted to synchronise my iPhone 3G yesterday I suddenly recognised that the storage capacity had sunk from 3.5 GB to 0.5 GB. The yellow bar suddenly had become longer and indicated 3 GB more "OTHERS" (other programs) than before. I didn´t have installed anything so far. What can be the reason for this???
    Thanks for all your help!
    Klaus hausmann

I restored from a back up. All third party app data and settings seem to be preserved. HOWERVER, I went from 5.73 GB of OTHER Capacity data to 5.81 GB. So restore from a backup file is NOT a solution for this mess.
It seems that this is a file system problem in the OS that has persisted for years from the internet searches I've done.
I'm going to do a full restore, realizing that I will have to re-enter all the data that I did not want to lose. Some of the 3rd party apps have backup/restore import/export features. Some do not.
On a larger scale is this problem 1) acknowledged by Apple as a problem and 2) do they intend to actually solve it (i.e., not suggesting that I restore my phone from scratch destroying my data is actually a reasonable solution)?

  • Storage capacity of the iPod Classic

I see a consistent breakdown of playback capacity for the line up of iPods that goes like this:
    -Classic - 160GB - 36 hours of music playback & 6 hours of video
    -Touch - 8GB - 30 hours of music playback & 6 hours of video
    -Touch - 32GB - 30 hours of music playback & 6 hours of video
    -Tourch - 64GB - 30 hours music playback & 6 hours of video
This makes no sense to me. Surely having more storage capacity results in the ability to play back more music and video.
I bought the iPod Classic specifically because I assumed it had much more playback capacity than the iPod Touch. Is this not the case for some reason?
Can somebody explain this to me please?
    LD

What your looking at is the playback time of the battery on a full battery charge, not the capacity of the iPod. Enjoy your Classic.

  • TS3276 iCloud Storage is Full

I began receiving emails a few days ago that my iCloud Storage was close to full and today I received a message that my iCloud Storage was FULL and I would no longer be able to send or receive emails on any cloud devices. I now know that those attempting to send me emails are receiving a delivery failure notice with the phrase "over quota".
I have purchased additional iCloud Storage capacity about an hour ago, but the same error message continues to appear on the sender's email when they attempt to send me an email. Does it take some time for a new purchase of storage to take effect or is there something else going on here?
    Thanks for your replys.

iCloud does not delete your mail when full, you have some other problem.

  • When I upload my photos to the cloud will the storage capacity in my device be adjusted?

When I upload my photos to the cloud will the storage capacity in my device be adjusted?

See the following quote from iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ - Apple Support
How does iCloud Photo Library save space on my device?
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your iOS device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. iCloud Photo Library stores the original, high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and can keep lightweight, device-optimized versions on each of your devices. As long as you have enough storage, recent photos and videos that you access the most will stay on your device at full resolution.
You can turn on Optimize [device] Storage from Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You need an Internet connection to access an original photo or video that’s stored only in iCloud.

  • Storage capacity of iTunes on an iPhone

Before I buy and iPhone I would like to know what is the storage capacity of iTunes is on the iPhone, average # of songs. I have 2700 songs stored on my iPod; the AT&T store rep said the iphone wouldn't hold that much but he couldn't tell me what it would hold. Also I understand that music playback uses lots of battery, is this true?

What capacity iPhone are you considering?
My 32GB iPhone 3GS currently has 2552 songs on it and is nowhere near full. It also has 2 TV series and 5 movies, plus 71 applications and 209 photos with 7.7GB free.
It all depends on what quality and length these songs you have are, and the capacity of iPhone you get.
    On a 32GB iPhone you'll easily fit 2700 songs.
Music playback does not use lots of battery. Out of all the things the iPhone can do, music playback is possibly one of the least power hungry.

  • My phone keeps saying "storage almost full" I have 6GB available of phone storage and 4.5GB available of iCloud. Can anyone help me?

My phone keeps saying "storage almost full" I have 6GB available of phone storage and 4.5GB available of iCloud. Can anyone help me? I obviously have space but I don't know whats going on...

The taking of photos requires storage capacity on the phone itself. iCloud storage has nothing to do with picture taking, that is backup storage area. You will have to remove content from the phone to increase storage on the phone to be able to take photos.
