OVM 3 testing

Hello,
actually i face some errors while testing oracle vm 3.2.2.
the goal is to deploy ovm to our customer with jde 9.1.
After installing ovm on oracle vm server, i was not able to refresh my repository,
when i refresh the repository i have this error :
Setting Context to model only in job with id=1367428524981
Job Internal Error (Operation)com.oracle.ovm.mgr.api.exception.FailedOperationException: OVMAPI_6055E Discover target: ovsctech, Discover failed with error: java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Integer cannot be cast to java.lang.Boolean

at com.oracle.ovm.mgr.discover.ovm.VirtualMachineCfgDiscoverHandler.process(VirtualMachineCfgDiscoverHandler.java:31)
this is just part of the error msg
With this i cannot move on testing
I had the same error trying to import a vm of jde 9.1,
i reported it here error : OVM 3 import vm fail error OVMAPI_6055E Discover target ... cannot be cast
this jde 9.1 vm was a template first, after install on ovs 2.2 i try to import it to ovm 3 but like i said i face this OVMAPI_6055E Discover target: ovsctech, Discover failed with error: java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Integer cannot be cast to java.lang.Boolean error .
i tried to import it uncompressed and compressed as tgz but always the same error, when the import reach the cfg file.
Is there some changes to do on this config file ?
so is someone had this error before ?
unable to refresh repository (OVMAPI_6055E)
and
unable to import vm (OVMAPI_6055E)
is it a recurring error ?
i have tested realvnc to connect vm also, but no graphic appear ???

Any ideas on how to make that work??Sadly, no. This is the same problem with SAS disks: Oracle VM sees them as local-only and doesn't allow you to create pool filesystems on them. It is something we're aware of, but I'm not sure when it will be addressed.

  • OVM 3.0.3 Networking Question

I have a small OVM test cluster.
Two OVM Servers version 3.0.3 and one OVM Manager version 3.0.3
I have two VMs. When I try to ssh to one of the VMs it actually opens an ssh session on the OVM Server.
There are no DNS issues and I even entered the hostname information in /etc/hosts on the manager and servers.
The servers each have one live network port. There is no separate management network. My past work with VM Ware and even Solaris cluster led me to believe the networking would just work. I am missing something here but I'm not sure what.
    Thanks,

In fact, when the vm starts up it says it can't bring the interface online because another host is using the ip. Then something IS using that IP and the VM is not.
I cannot fathom how the servers are answering on these IP's. Nslookup resolves to the VM's.nslookup just does name resolution: DNS thinks the IPs belongs to the VMs, but somehow you've assigned them to the servers. Keep in mind they should NOT be configured anywhere in the UI.
Also, I just destroyed and rebuilt a VM and configured it for dhcp. That failed to pickup an ip. Means that the networking on your servers needs to be evaluated, as something is not configured correctly. Assuming DHCP is meant to work on the network upon which the VMs are sitting.

  • Error adding 2.1.5 server into OVS 2.1.2 mastered Pool

When trying to add a fresh OVS 2.1.5 server into the Pool that has single Pool master of OVS 2.1.2,
    i've got following error:
The agent version should be the same and Oracle VM should be 2.1.2 or upward in the pool.
So i've decided to try rpm -e ovs-agent (ovs-agent-2.2-83) and rpm -ivh older one from 2.1.2 (ovs-agent-2.2-51)
there was no dependency or other issue reinstalling and agent start runing OK,
In the OVM Testing connection was OK, but when confirming adding the servers - the very same error occurs.
Anyone knows what is the trick? Maybe to re-configure the agent somehow?

Anyone knows what is the trick? Maybe to re-configure the agent somehow? You most likely need to upgrade your pool master to 2.1.5 to support 2.1.5 servers in the pool. I'm pretty sure you can't downgrade the agent itself as it then will not know how to manage the newer funtionality in 2.1.5. Though, you may have more luck upgrading the 2.1.2 server to the 2.1.5 agent instead of the other way around.
Either way, is there a reason why you don't upgrade all your servers to 2.1.5?

  • How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs

    Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.
    Thanks
    Srinivas

You can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.
    For your review...
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/configure-vm-templates-1656261.html
Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.

  • Error while adding new OVM in server pool

    Hi,
I have to add a new OVM server to the existing server pool.
while doing test connecting at the time of adding server in server pool, it is contacting. however, it is showing error with " check the agent connectivity" while clicking OK.
    ovs agent server is running.
can any one assit me on this

    Hi,
Did the subscriber database used for replication before?
Check the MSDistribution_history table in the distribution database. It contains history rows for the Distribution Agents.
In case you encounter the “One or more subscriptions have been marked inactive. Drop and re-create all subscriptions for this node that are failing with this error.” in the Replication Monitor after restarting the Distribution
    Agent.
This means that the Distribution Agent is unable to delivery data due to some errors or the job was stopped and the Agent will go into an infinite retry logic.
The Agent will stay in retry mode until the Distribution Cleanup job removes the “cached” transactions from the Distribution Database. At this point the Distribution Agent will no longer have the data needed to “catch
up” the subscriber. As result, the Subscriber will be marked “inactive” and post the following error in the MSrepl_errors table in the Distribution database.
    Subscription Expiration and Deactivation

  • OVM  local drives not seen - SAS drive issue

    OVM 3.1.1
Dell R510 12 SAS Drives in Raid 5
I'm trying to set up an r510 for a test env, and after reading through the forums, I found that it says SAS drives can't be used.
6.4.3. Local SAS Hard Disks Not Supported for Storage
But that seems crazy. They are in Raid 5. I'm not trying to access them individually. They show up as a Physical Disk, but they don't show up when I create repository.
    I've went through this note:
Oracle VM 3.0.3 - Using several local disks
and cleaned up everything. Deleted the 1 partition, ensured multipathing worked, and the storage disk array appears.
Doesn't make since that a RAID 5 volume whether SAS or IDE would viewed differently. The "drive" is presented through the controller. It could be my controller. I've heard others said it works. Some say it works with 3.0.3.

Ok, I finally go it to show up. When I created the server pool, I didn't notice that it had issues adding the server with local disks. Had a hostname lookup issue. Anyway, I can see the disk now, but have the following error:

Now, I can create the repository.

  • New Windows 2008 guest will not start in OVM 3.0.3

I could install 2.1.2 with some ancient IDE disks.
Is there something I can tweak to get the SATA disks recognized?

Just a wild guess on my part. Look in your /etc/modprobe.conf on your working config. Then try copying that kernel module over to your OracleVM server if it is not already there. If the OracleVM server already has the module then check modprobe.conf on your OracleVM server to verify the module settings are in there.

  • HA Cluster OVM 2.2

    Hi,
I'm quite new to Oracle VM, so this is maybe a newbie question.
I'v tried to enable HA within a server pool. First I create a shared storage (repos.py -n xxxx:/ovm). Afterwords I assigned an new cluster root to the server (repos.pv -r UUID; repos.py -i). This all works quite well, as the shared storage was shown as new cluster root.
Then I went into Oracle VM Manager and enabled HA (enter the Server Poot Virtual IP, check High Availability Mode to enable). The test of the HA works also without a problem, but when I want to activate HA, I lost the connection to the server. Then I went in front of the server, and the the server is rebooting all the time????
In the short time the server is up I see a new interface lo:1 with the IP-Address of the Server Poot Virtual IP.
I've tried this with to different server, and I have the same behavior on both server. Does anyone have the same problem?

I edit the /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp and changed the network-script stanza to network-bridge-ovs. Then I process like in the Meta-Link Doc: 738269.1 (just bind eth0 to xenbr0 and not bond0) and now it works. I receive the right device xenbr0:0 and the HA seems to be working too.Glad you found a solution.
So this new network-script (network-bridges, comes with 2.2) seems to have some problems.network-bridges ships with all versions of Oracle VM -- it's the default bridge creation script for Xen. Essentially, it creates a bridge for every network device it finds on the system. However, it is not recommended for complex network configuration, including bonding/trunking or VLAN assignments.

  • Cluster Not Available error when booting OVM server DOM0 from USB

    Hi all,
I have been wanting to run OVM 2.2 from a USB stick for a while now. I ran through the install CD today and saw there was a 'minimal USB install' option on the installation screen. So I plugged in a 4GB USB stick, rebooted, and ran the USB install.
After a while, the install completed, OVM booted up perfectly it seemed, and I was happy.
The server had no local storage apart from this USB stick as we are going to be hooking it up to an iSCSI target for guest VM storage.
This was a new lab setup, so I got the VM Manager running on another system, connected to the USB booted OVM server, and went to create a pool.
Running the 'test connection' that worked fine.
Trying to add the pool - failed. I got the error 'Cluster Not Available'
On the OVM server I did a repos.py -l and nothing gets listed.
I understand that for HA you need a repository with shared storage. However, before I have used these same install CDs with a singe local hard disk, to get OVM server running, and it did so fine.
So what's different with the USB disk install that means you don't get a repository?
Do I have to create a special repository LUN, manually connect the OVM server to this, and then use repos.py to create it?
    Cheers,
    Jeff

Ok I have read, re-read related parts of the underground manual and have hit a brick wall with the 'simple' task of setting up a NIC for dedicated iSCSI traffic. The manual does not cover this task in the iSCSI SAN section.
    So I'm in a catch 22.
My OVM server boots up, with it's single management NIC configured, but once booted - I don't want to connect to the iSCSI target via this network - I need it completely closed off.
I want to use another NIC (or bond of two) for dedicated iSCSI traffic to and from the OVM Server.
However, the underground manual strangely only seems to cover a single NIC configuration! It looks like he assumes you are going to be running iSCSI on your management NIC, which I can only think is incredibly bad practice.
I have installed OVM with the linux asknetwork - this did not give me the option to configure additional interfaces.
I then manually edited /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 on the OVMServer, restarted network, restarted the entire box - I can ping my new NIC / IP locally from within the OVM server, but I can not connect to the iSCSI target, nor can I ping the iSCSI NIC on the OVM server from the target.
This is such a simple thing to try to achieve - super frustrating...

  • Oracle VM 3.2.1 test setup - problems with OVS node evictions

    Hi all
I am building a small test environment for Oracle VM with the following configuration
4 boxes, each 1 x AMD 6 core cpu + 32GB RAM + 2 x 1GB ethernet (10.30.32.n, 192.168.20.n networks - I only have 1x16 port GB switch, so all cabling is through the one switch - that may be part of the problem)
3 boxes are diskless, running Oracle VM Server from 8GB USB flash drive
1 Box is EL6.3 and set up with:
1x750GB with (LVM) partitions for /, /u01 (Oracle 11gR2SE + OVM Manager), swap, and a partition for the OVS pool
4x2TB drives, set up with LVM striping, and 4 LVs - 1 750GB for virtualbox and VMWare VMs, and 3 others for OVS storage repositories (each a bit over 2TB) - all ext4.
The OVS Pool and OVS Storage file systems are exported via NFS
VM server and VM manager installs all went smoothly. Servers and storage are discovered OK in the manager.
I created 2 networks - one on the 10.30.32 subnet for Server Management, Cluster Heartbeat and Live Migrate (also the public network for accessing the machines). The other on the 192.168.20 subnet for Storage and Virtual Machine.
Created storage pools, and presented to all the servers.
In creating the Server Pool, just took the default 120 for the cluster timeout
Now when I try to import an assembly, or a VM template, it gets so far, then then the server doing the actual job reboots.
My initial thought is that for whatever reason the NFS traffic involved in importing and writing - either network, or I/O on the NFS server - is swamping the cluster heartbeat traffic, and the node just fences itself
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, or can advise what further diagnostics or troubleshooting I can do

I suspect it more to do with your storage than anything. Run your import again and sample your I/O performance from your NFS server during the import. Also, if you can... .create LACP bond on your NFS server. I don't know what kind of throughput you expect but remember. A single GB nic can only do a max of 125/MB a sec. That sounds rather good but take into consideration everything you're doing across your environment... its not a lot. I see well over 400 mb/sec network throughput at times on my storage. I run bonded 10GB nics.
Once you get your templates and such built you shouldn't experience that much NFS I/O. You should allocate enough memory to your guest as to avoid virtual disk paging on your NFS storage.

  • How to create EBS 12.1.1 cloning using OVM Manager

    Hi
We are currently running Oracle Application release 12.1.1 and Oracle Database 10.2.0.4.1 on IBM Power 5 on AIX 6.1.
We are in process of Migration the whole environment to Intel based platform our go LIVE date is 26th september 2013 and the vendor has configured the Oracle VM environment, they suggested us to use Oracle VM templates but we did the test migration using iso files of Linux(x86_64) and Oracle DB Home and Oracle Application Techstack
Source (2 server HACMP CLuster) Server1 DB and CONC, server 2 APPS
    Oracle Database 10.2.0.4.1
    Oracle Application 12.1.1
    AIX 6.1
Target (2 Servers OVM Cluster) Guest VM DB, Guest VM APPS
    Oracle Database 11.2.0.3.6
    Oracle Application 12.1.1
    Oracle Enterprise linux 6.4
    Oracle VM Hypervisor 3.2.3
    Oracle VM Manager 3.2.3
We have completed the migration by installation the OS, DB Home, APPS TECH stack using media because we were unable to get the latest templates from Oracle E-delivery, we need to create a clone of the current setup using OVM Manager and also cloning of EBS Database and APPS tier using the same method without running the cfgclone scripts, help needed.
    Thank you

  • Live Migration in OVM 3.0.2 should have an interruption or not?

Live Migration in OVM 3.0.2 should have an interruption or not?
    I mean: I have 2 OVM Servers 3.0.2 & FibreChannel Storage
I installed a Oracle Linux 5.6 x64 in paravirtualized Mode
When I do a Live Migration the Virtual Machine changes in seconds to the other server with the lock image. Meanwhile I ping to the machine & Im inside the command line.
Communication interrupt like 10 seconds or sometimes more & command line does not work for the same time
    Is that correct?
    Greetings
    Alex Dávila

Right now Iam testing connectivity & when I do live migration the interruption is minimal, just 1 ping lost
I don't know why yesterday delay secondsYou might want to talk to your networking guys to make sure that PORTFAST is enabled (if you have Cisco switches) or that you have rapid STP configured. Keep in mind that we switch the MAC address of the guest from one physical server to another. The delay you saw was your network noticing and re-routing packets to the new location.

  • OVM 3.2.1 upgrade issues

    Hi all,
I have upgraded the Oracle VM manager and server from 3.0.3 to 3.2.1. OVM server and manager upgrade ran fine but the guest machine which are created using OVM 3.0.3 versions are hanging. At OVM 3.0.3 while creating a server pool, I used the same OVM server ip address instead of a new virual ip address. When I try to create a server pool with the same ip address I am getting an error like ORMRU_000044E cannot se the virtual IP address because the IP address is already in use of the server. I have tested this on development still facing the same problem. I have tried even upgrading to OVM manager and server to 3.2.2, still it is not allowing me create a server pool with the same OVM server ip address.
Please let me know if anyone faced the same problem. I have 7 different OVM 3.0.3 production servers with critical guest machines running. I used RAW disk space of the server to create the virtual machines.
    Thanks
