Storage Spaces - Can't recover from OS reinstall (failure to attach VHD)

I had a Windows 2012 R2 Standard server with GUI running Storage Spaces on some non-raid drives.  The OS became corrupted and so I had to reinstall.  Upon reinstall I go to Storage Spaces and see everything just as it should be in terms of recovery.
The problem I'm having is the reattaching of the VHD file itself that hosts all of the files.  I click attach VHD and it does, nothing shows up Explorer though.
So I go to manage disk drives and it shows all of the individual drives and the large VHD set to offline.  I online the drive and the machine just basically locks up.
I tried to do the same thing via powershell but have the same problem with the machine just locking up.  Anybody seend this before?  I don't really care to actually get the Storage Spaces working at this point, just need access the files themselves
so I can pull them off.  Any help is much appreciated.

Hi,
Generically Storage Space will not be affected with reinstall operation system - if we move all disks to another computer, storage space will still be recognized.
it shows all of the individual drives and the large VHD set to offline
We should not see any disk inside a created storage space in Disk Manager - Virtual Disks created in Storage Space will be listed but not the physical disks. So I need to confirm:
a. Whether "individual drives" means physical disks, or virtual disks created in Storage Space?b.
Whether "VHD" here means virtual disks in Storage Space, or you actually created VHD on virtual disks (in storage space).
If VHD here means virtual disks, you can test to connect all disks to another system which supports Storage Space (Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2) to see if disks could be recognized.
However it seems more likely "VHDs on Virtual disk" - VHD files could corrupt which causes your current situation and if this is true, it will be difficult to get VHD files back to work as we have less option to repair a corrupted VHD file.

  • How can I recover from Windows login failure: User Profile Service failed the login

I have Boot Camp installed on a separate partition on a MacBook Pro, late 2011 model. I have Mavericks installedd (10.9.1). I use, variously, both Parallels and VM Fusion to access the BootCamp installation of Windows 7.
Except for having recently installed updates of both VMFusion and Parallels, I got this failure message when trying to login to Windows:: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
I had just been on Windows a few moments previously to access a business site that only accepts IE. Appreciate any useful insight on dealing with this issue without having to totally replace the BootCamp installation. A lot of the suggestions on Microsoft Windows repair sites are either incomprehensible or don't seem applicable.

Same problem here. Windows 7 support gives several so-called fixes (including regedit tweaks, eliminating the blocked user account), but all require access to that partition. So far as I know, I have only one user, since this is my personal computer -- unless there is some sort of default "administrator" logon.
Windows support says the problem might be caused by antivirus software running while we try to logon, but this problem has never happened to me before, and I have not made anti-virus changes (maybe AVG or Avast did so automatically)
I tried to access regedit through Finder, but get a garbled text-edit with the message that regedit cannot be opened by DOS.
So I wonder (a) is there a default admin logon? (b) Can we tinker with the settings inside Windows from Finder, or (c) how else can we get into Windows?
My setup: Macbook Pro (Fall 2010), 10.6.8, boot camp, Windows 7.

After delete plugin, all bookmarks dispeared. I am able to use hard drive recover , found firefox.bak folder. Can I recover from there?

    Thanks.
Just to get the terminology right, neither Spybot Search & Destroy nor Avast Browser Cleanup are supposed to clean viruses. This is what anti-virus software is for.
Avast Browser Cleanup is a tool that serves to delete unwanted toolbars and plug-ins. None of these are viruses.
I haven't heard about Avast Browser Cleanup before, and it's certainly not something I'd have used. In any case, it's not supposed to kill your profile.
''I have recovered a folder called Mozilla Firefox.bak and some other stuffs''
So what's in that recovered folder? If it contains the automatically created backups of your bookmarks, you can recover your bookmarks from that.

Aparently 8X havent been fully exploted and there are some glitches. On top of that Windows XP and 2000 have some reflesh problems over 60 Hz (as it says in ati web)
Mean while is up to us to look for workarounds until they do there job.  If the Mobos (motherboard) makers dont make the change then it will have to be up to ATI.
Aparrently disabling the Fastwrite on windows helps a lot.  So far I have had this problem making a data backup on a DVD-R so two DVD-R wasted.

Your video card doesn't support AGP 8x, so that shouldn't be a factor at all.   Does SmartGart report it running at 4x?
Did you do a clean install of XP when you started using your mobo?
Has this problem only occured when using your DVD burner?  If so, the problem may lie with that.
Only other suggestion... maybe time for a new video card?

    Hi all,
Had a software failure while upgrading the fabric interconnects. Does anyone know the process to recover from a software failure.
Ive copied up the kickstart and system images, from the loader prompt ive booted the kickstart image and then loaded the system image but the fabric interconnect still reboots to the "switch(boot)" prompt.

    Hi Robert,
Thanks for the tips, but unfortunately im still stuck on the switch(boot): prompt.
The bootflash: only has 2 files in it, the kickstart and system image.
Each time i get the FI to the boot prompt, i can ping the device, but not access via the GUI. (i dont have a local copy of UCSM installed)
What files should i have in the bootflash: for the FI to correctly load.
below is a log of the FI as it loads the kickstart image from the Loader prompt.

  • Storage Spaces - Remove Physical Disk from Simple layout

I am running Server 2012 RTM with a single storage pool containing 4 drives - 2.73TB, 1.36TB, 465GB and 148GB. There is a single virtual disk created, with thin provisioning, using the Simple layout, with a current maximum size of 2.73TB, and with 1.32TB
allocated. I want to remove the 148GB drive and replace it with a 465GB drive. When I right-click the 148GB disk and select Remove, I get a warning that Windows will attempt to rebuild any virtual disks that store data on the disk I'm trying to remove, and
that in order to succeed, the storage pool must have enough free space to accommodate the data from the disk I'm trying to remove. There is more than enough space in the virtual disk to accommodate whatever files may be stored on the 148GB disk - over 1TB
unallocated. However, when I confirm that I want to remove the disk from the pool, I get the following message:
This physical disk is used by one or more virtual disks that use the Simple (no resiliency) layout. To remove this physical disk, delete the following virtual disks: Simple
Surely the fact that it's a simple volume (rather than mirrored/parity) shouldn't affect the ability to move the data off the disk? It appears that disk removal is implemented as a simulated drive failure, forcing a rebuild of the resiliency data, rather
than by simply moving the data off the disk onto other available disks.
Additionally, after I've attempted to remove the disk, it's now been marked as 'Retired'.
Is there any simple way to remove this disk?

Same problem here, but I have some workaround for the problem.
But, even in Windows Home Server with its awesome disk extender (predecessor of Storage Spaces) you had to take the shares (meaning volumes in our case) offline so you could take out the disk from the pool.
Agree that it would make more sense to be able to remove disk from the pool online and the technology is most likely is already there: online cluster moves with defragmentation API was there for years and ReFS moves clusters online when it detects disk errors.
Anyway here is the process that may work for you if taking volume offline is an option in your case:
Try to remove physical disk in Server Manager - it will fail with abovementioned error, but the disk will go into "Retired" state.
Now provision a new Virtual Disk and a volume of your choice. Most likely you will pick the same disk and volume type as you already had, but this is the chance to change the topology. You should be able to do this since you have a lot of physical disk
space, especially if you used Thin provisioning.
It looks like at this point retired physical disk is not included into the new Virtual Disk provisioning, but it is still accessible via existing virtual disk.
Copy over all files from your old volume to a new volume.
    Now delete old Virtual Disk.
If you want - change disk name and volume letter of new virtual disk that you created and new volume to what you had before.
Now in Disk Manager take failing physical disk offline.
Replace failing disk, initialize new disk and add it to the pool.
Note: for me sometimes removing disk in via Storage Pool management GUI does not mark it as "Retired". In this case you can open PowerShell as Admin and assuming you want to remove PhysicalDisk2 - run the following command:
    Set-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk2 -Usage Retired

  • Storage spaces can only use whole drives

One of the features that I was really interested in with WS2012E is storage spaces as it replaces the old driver extender of WHS v1. Having now installed WS2012E onto my WHS2011 box I am bit staggered to find that it can only use whole drives. My box came
with 2 * 2Tb drives, the first partitioned as boot, then a 60G of OS followed by the rest allocated as storage. I have successfully created a Storage space pool of the second drive but cannot find any way to add the remaining storage from the large partition
on the other drive into the pool. As the UI just shows me drives rather than partitions, I am bit challenged. I thought that storage spaces was meant to be flexible about adding drives just like the old drive extender. Even add on technolgies like DriveBender
for WHS2011 allows for a storage space to be made up from this type of set up. So we seem to be going backwards.
Plus when creating the drive pool it defaulted on a 2Tb drive to a 2Gb size! How useful is that? As soon as I started copying data to the drive it ran out of space. I then had to go in and expand it.

I note that you did this with Windows Server 2012 Essentials.  I cannot seem to do this with Windows 2012 Standard.  I have two 500 GB disks and 40GB of the first disk, PhysicalDisk0 is partitioned for the OS.  Nothing I do makes PhysicalDisk0
show up in the Storage Pool area of Server Manager - all I can see is PhysicalDisk1.  (Refer to 'Physical Disks' in the bottom right corner of the previous poster's first screen shot above.  I can only see 'PhysicalDisk1', not 'PhysicalDisk0'.)  If
I click 'Disks' just under 'Volumes' in the same screenshot above, I can see PhysicalDisk0, and it shows 466 GB capacity, 423 GB unallocated.  PhysicalDisk1 shows 466 GB capacity, 466 GB unallocated.  My intent was to mirror the remaining 423 GB
on PhysicalDisk0 with 423 GB on PhysicalDisk1.  I would then allocate the leftover 43 GB on PhysicalDisk1 as a 'scratch' disk.  I have tried leaving everything unallocated and have tried all variations of creating volumes and virtual disks, but nothing
I do makes a difference.  I found other threads related to this issue which indicated there was a flaw in the 2012 GUI and that this process could be done via Powershell.  However, there seems to be a mix of Windows 8 and Windows 2012 in these threads
and, apparently the Powershell commands I've found apply to 8 and not 2012, as I get invalid command errors when I try to use them.
Can anybody tell me how to mirror the unallocated portion of the primary disk PhysicalDisk0 (which has a partition for the OS) with a same-sized portion of PhysicalDisk1 with Windows Server 2012?  Thanks!

  • Can't recover from sleep sometimes: "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

I'm running gdm + gnome-shell (force fallback mode) on a Thinkpad W520 with intel integrated graphics only (via bios setting, so no optimus). Once a week or so, my Laptop fails to go to sleep properly and to recover from it.
It basically works like this, normally when I close the lid, the sleep LED blinks a couple of times, and then stays on (and you can hear the fan turn off). When sending the laptop to sleep fails, the led blinks indefinitely (like, all night, if you let it), the fan keeps running as well.
Once you open the lid again, you are greeted with the message "ACPI: Unable to dock!" on a black screen. This happens when successfully recovering from sleep mode as well, though.
Shortly afterwards, instead of seeing a password prompt, you see this:
    http://wocares.com/host/images/516726_sleeperr1.jpg
I tried to search the problem but couldn't find anything that was quite like my problem. I did however find someone saying the ~/.xsession-errors file could contain clues. So here is that:

  • HT4718 Can't recover ilife after reinstalling Lion

    - have tried Apple pages but apps don't appear in purchases section of App Store

Then you need to use the original system disc that came with your model to Re-Install the iLife Apps and then use software update to update them to the newer versions.
If for some reason you do not have the original system discs you can order them from Apple for a small fee or you can buy iLife on DVD or through the MAS. On DVD from places like Amazon or eBay.
Note the iLife apps on the MAS do not include iDVD or iWeb anymore. So you would need an older iLife DVD or your original sys discs to get those programs.

  • Can't recover from time machine because missing space

    Hi,
after having some issue with the hard drive of my MBP, I had to erase it. Now I'm trying to recover with a time machine save but when I get to install it, it tells me MACINTOSH HD doesn't have enough space while it's empty (280GO). What should I do ?
    Thank you

Starting from a clean installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. Enter Time Machine and press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible.* Select the one you want and navigate to your home folder (in the Users folder at the top level of the old startup volume.)
You should now be able to restore your user data. I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of the home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of the home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem because you erased the startup volume. The next time you back up, Time Machine won't recognize any files as being the same as they were before, and will make a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on one or more of the backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set the backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
              Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of the computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

  • I got a new phone and it won't back up anything on to my icloud because it says there isn't enough storage space, can I delete old back ups?

I am not good with technology at all. I upgraded my 3GS to a 4S and now it won't back up to my iCloud. it keeps telling me that the icloud is full and I don't have enough room to back it up.I was wondering if there is away to delete the old back ups in order to free up space?

If you no longer need the backups, you can delete them by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of device you want to delete the backup for (under Backups at the top), then tap Delete Backup.  This will permanently delete it from your account, freeing up the storage it occupies.

  • I can't recover from "recovery mode" what do I do?

One day I attempted to turn on my iPad and a black screen should up and the little iTubes symbol pops up with a picture of a cable pointed towards the symbol.
So I attempted to hook it up to my computer to connect to iTunes. I figured this was because I was supposed to update my iPad to the newest version but was procrastinating. So I figured this was why my iPad wasn't working.
I connect my iPad and iTunes won't even recognize that the iPad was connected.
My iTunes also wasn't working because it was 2-3 versions behind. So I went through this whole ordeal, I ended up having to completly delete and reinstall iTunes to get it to work. Finally I got version 11.2.2.3 install up and running.
I connect my iPad 2 again and an error pops up saying:
"iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes."
ok. So that's the problem, my iPad 2 is in "Recovery Mode"
So I go ahead and click the Restore button and it starts to download "iPad Software Update" which is a 1.06GB download.
It downloads and gets to varying download percentages. The farthest it's gotten is 65.7MB out of 1.06GB. And it downloads super super slow. Starts off at an Est Download Time of 1 hour all the way up to 10 hours. I have a fast computer and good connection, I don't know the exact time of a regular large download, but I know that I've downloaded movies well over 2GB in an hour or less.
Intermittantly the download will pause and it will give me the same error message as before: "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes."
All I have to do is hit OK and resume download. But eventually, another error will pop up which will end the download:
"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad "iPad". An unknown error occurred (9006)
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."
And that will be it. If I try to resume the download after that last error message, the download will start from the beginning.
So as of right now, I have a $800 paper weight. And Apple wants me to pay them just to talk to someone.
How the heck do I get my iPad 2 out of recovery mode!!!!
Here is some info on my iPad if it helps.
    iPad 2   64GB  WiFi 3G
    Model A1397       EMC 2424

1.Turn off your device. If you can't turn it off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time and wait a few seconds for it to turn off.
2.Plug the device's USB cable into your computer only.
3.Hold down the device's Home button as you connect the USB cable to it.
4.When you see the Connect to iTunes screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 one more time.
5.Use iTunes to restore your device.
    Additional Information:
If you started your device in recovery mode by mistake, restart it to exit recovery mode. Or you can just wait—after 15 minutes the device will exit recovery mode by itself. If you want a faster way to solve iPad Stuck in Recovery Mode, try iPad data recovery software.

  • How can I Recover From Damaged Drive?

    Hi,
I've had an internal HD corrupt in my new Mac Pro, and I'm wondering what I can do to recover the data.  I've looked at this several posts including this one listing 3 data recovery software apps:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15249262#15249262
I also considered using Ubuntu Remix as described here, but it's looking like the dd tool exists in OSX as a command from terminal?  That led me to this article, describing how to use the dd tool.  So IS this something that's just included in OSX?  Also, I'm not really clear on what to enter for the Unix drive path.  The drive shows up in Disk Utility as a 4.14TB drive (even though it's only 2TB), but is not mounted, and so I don't know what the drive path would be. . . would it still be /volumes/Archive?  Or would it be the name I see in Disk Utility?
I've already tried Disk Warrior (booting to the CD even though the drive in question is not my OSX drive), and it said the drive couldn't be rebuilt.  When I startup the computer, it gives me a message saying the drive couldn't be initialized, and the option to initialize, eject, or (I think) ignore.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the best methods from what I've listed here?  I can supply more information if needed.  Just tell me what to look for.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

    Lawrence,
The same has happened to my gf's iMac. She has 27" iMac mid 2011 and today the drive went down. Instead of 1TB HD with two partitions Disk Utility lists it as "4.14 GB ST_M13FQBL Media" with no partitions. On top of that there is a strange noise generated - I believe this is fan related.
It took me a while to workout what the heck was going on with it as Apple Hardware Testing (AHT) does not list any problems. Initially I thought that MBR was wiped due to Windows 7 service pack installation, but when run Disk Utility I realized that there is something wrong with HD.
Apple started replacement program for faulty Seagate HDs for iMac sold between late 2009 and mid 2011. Unfortuantely her iMac is not eligible, but luckilly it is still on warranty. More details about the recall can be found here http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac-harddrive/
I have read a bit about the issue and I found this link was very usefull:
When a drive powers up, its MCU (microcontroller) puts it through a self test during which it confirms the integrity of the SDRAM and serial flash memory, among other things. It then consults the PUIS flag and, if disabled, it commands the motor controller IC to spin up the motor. The drive then accesses the hidden System Area (also called the Service Area or Negative Cylinders) on the platters and retrieves information such as the runtime ATA firmware, P-list and G-list (factory defects and grown defects), translator (to convert LBAs to physical Cylinder/Head/Sector), etc. If any of these modules are corrupted or inaccessible, then the drive powers up in a kind of "safe" mode. In this mode there is no access to user data. Sometimes the drive reports 0 LBAs, as is the case with some Seagate models that have corrupted G-lists or SMART data. At other times the drive identifies itself with its "factory alias" (eg ST_M13FQBL or ROM MODEL HAWK) rather than its actual model number. This alias is stored within the serial flash memory on the PCB.
Milos on his blog (http://www.milos.ivanovic.co.nz/blog/218) explains similar problem and shows the solution how to perform a DIY repair of the HD. Unfortunately I am not sure if the fix applies to this case, and also, I do not have required hardware to perform the repair (and additional machine I could temporaily plug the HD to power it up)
Lawrence, it would be great if you shared your experience on recovering the data from that drive. My gf does not want to turn her iMac to Apple service yet as she wants to get her data back from the drive. I am planning to run some data recovery apps against that HD, and if nothing, I will send the HD to Seagate Recovery Services and hope to get it done for free as it is their faulty drives.
    Thanks,
