Stored Procedure VS Preparedstatement

I have to do different things based on the input values. I can either do that by calling different SQL statements in java based on in input or call the stored procedure where i determine the query to run based on the input the the procedure. I was wondering if there is any reason to prefer one of the methods over another or are both essentially same ?

Otherwise, don't bother with them.
If you need to do simple inserts, updates, and deletes on small to moderate amounts of data, go with the PreparedStatement. However, generating reports from large amounts of data where lots of calculations are involved can suck (lots of code, potentially more trips to database, likely less performant, etc.) if done in Java.

  • Calling postChanges() Before a Stored Procedure

    I am using JDeveloper 11.1.1.2 and ADF with BC. I have the following situation:
    I am updating a record via an updatable view object. When I click commit, I also need to call an existing stored procedure on my database to do some updates. The stored procedure queries the table upon which my entity object is based and makes updates to other tables/records based on that information. If there is an error in the stored procedure, then I want to roll back the changes in my app module, so I don't want to commit the app module changes until I know the stored procedure was successful. But the stored procedure can't see my view object changes until they are commited (or changes are posted).
    I am considering the following:
    (1) Make changes to view object
    (2) Call postChanges() on my app module's transaction
    (3) Call the stored procedure via PreparedStatement
    (4) Commit (if errors, rollback)
    Is this the preferred method for this situation?

    Brad,
    As long as the stored procedure does not commit, there are no autonomous transactions and you can guarantee that postChanges() and commit() will be called in the same request, I think you should be OK.

  • How to execute a procedure or function from Java Stored procedure

    Hi,
    I am new to Java Stored Procedures. I am working on Oracle 8i and JVM 1.3.1. I want to call a PL/SQL procedure from within Java. I have tried looking at severa; cources but they are quite high level for me. Can someone provide a simple example including the Source Code for .java file and also the calling function's code?
    Heres a sample of what I have been working on: I an including Java code, and Function code and how I call the function. Instead of doing "select sysdate from dual" I want to do like "create table temp1(var1 varchar2(10))" or similar... like "exec procname(var1)" etc.

    PS. The variable passed in function is just a dummy variable.

  • Error while calling stored procedure from Java

    How are you everybody? I hope everything is goin fine on your side. I have one issue in PL/SQL while calling below stored procedures from Java.
    Problem Description: We have a stored procedure PROCEDURE BULK_INSERTS (

  • Stored procedures in PV database

    I want to create PL/SQL stored procedures in Primavera database(Oracle 8.1.7) using JDBC ODBC bridge driver which further uses system dsn PrimaveraSDK_PE(Installed by standard Primavera client).
    Whenever i try creating it, i get an error message saying syntax error near word procedure.
    Same error occurs when i try creating a table.
    Following are my connection parameters:
    odbcURL = "jdbc:odbc:PrimaveraSDK_PE"
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");

    I can create the procedures using Oracle OCI driver but using that i do not have access to all fields..so errors says..invalid column.

    So whats wrong in creating the stored procedures in oracle database using JDBC ODBC bridge driver using system DSN????????

    First two lines show the valid output for the select query..which is absolutely correct. But the create procedure statement is throwing above mentioned errors.
    Also one more important thing, I am not been able to view all the columns of table projwbs(its regarding Primavera SDK) through SQL Plus having administrative rights.
    But I can access all the fields using jdbc odbc bridge driver in Java.
    Is there any specific security or access control????
    so that users would able to access specific columns through JDBC only and not through SQL Plus.
    Please help!!!

    On top of what jschell says, this just looks wrong in terms of how Oracle's internal Java works as well.

    Is the db you are querying a different one to the one this Java is stored in?

  • Calling a stored procedure before row update without using triggers

    I have got two tables Main Table(Table1) and History Table(Table2), whenever an update is done on Table1 i want to insert the old row before update to Table2, so that i have history available for that record.
    My doubt is
    how to refer to old value (values b4 update) in a stored procedure?
    how to call a stored procedure b4 every row update(on the database side as we do with tiggers)?
    I want to write a stored procedure where in i will insert the old row values ( value b4 update ) to Table2.
    Any Help would be great....

  • Call stored procedure with OUT parameter

    Hello,
    I have created a short-lived process. Within this process I am using the "FOUNDATION > JDBC > Call Stored Procedure" operation to call an Oracle procedure. This procedure has 3 parameters, 2 IN and 1 OUT parameter.
    The procedure is being executed correctly. Both IN parameters receive the correct values but I am unable to get the OUT parameter's value in my process.
    Rewriting the procedure as a function gives me an ORA-01460 since one of the parameters contains XML (>32K) so this is not option...
    Has someone been able to call a stored procedure with an OUT parameter?

    A brief answer to this from my side (not knowing Java that wel), but hopefully suffices to put you on the right track.

    A SQL user defined type is basically a class (it can contain properties and methods). It has only superficial resemblence to a traditional record struct. So you cannot use one. Even if you could (assuming you code a PL/SQL "traditional" record struct), there are issues around how char and numeric data are represented binary inside Oracle and issues around byte/word alignment.

    So bottom line - what you're doing will not work (as the errors show).

    Okay, so what then? Well, the OCI (Oracle Call Interface) supports all Oracle data types, including these user types (also called Advance Data Types in Oracle-speak). You therefore need to use the supplied API calls to deal with instantiated objects (structures) of these type.

    Iam passing an array of objects from Java to the C
    file. The total size of data that Iam sending is
    around 1GB. I have to load this data into the Shared
    memory after getting it in my C file. Iam working on
    HP-UX (64-bit). Everything works fine for around 400MB
    of data. When I try to send around 500MB of data, the
    disk utilization becomes 100%, so does my memory
    utilization and I get a "Not enough space" when I try
    to access shared memory. I have allocated nearly 2.5GB
    in my SHMMAX variable. Also, I have around 45GB of
    disk free. The JVM heap size is also at 2048MB. Where did you get the 400/500 number from? Is that the size of the file?
    What do you do with the data? Are you doing nothing but copying it byte for byte into shared memory?
    If yes then a simple test is to write a C application that does the same thing. If it has problems then it means you have an environment problem.
    If no then you are probably increasing the size of the data by creating a structure to hold it. How much overhead does that add to the size of the data?

  • Calling Stored Procedure from JDBC MSSQL

    Ok, I have a stored procedure on a MsSQL Server 2000 data base. I need to call it to encrypt/decrypt passwords, my problem is when I run it from Query Analyzer it works fine but not in JDBC land. Below I have included my code. I have read you need to use a callable statement, but my query has a proc call embedded in it, not just a proc call. Anyone know how this would be accomplished?

  • Forcing a commit in a JAVA stored procedure

    Hi,
    I am using a java stored procedure which updates few tables ;only after it completes the call the commit is happening;But i wanted it to commit the tables as and when the processing happens not at the end of the call to java stored procedure because the GUI is polling for changes into the database which will be updated by the stored procedure.
    i have already set the connection.setAutoCommit(true) in the code.
    Can somebody suggest a solution ?

    did you ever get a chance to read the error it is self explanatory. or else goggle it out to understand.
    It is not operation binding problem. while invoking the operation binding you are calling some db function from there you caught.
    coming to your requirement,
    create generate next number on base of type. please check will multi user environment it working properly or not.

  • Problem creating dataset using db2 stored procedure in Eclipse BIRT

    I am using DB2 9.7 Express Edition in Eclipse BIRT(version 2.5.1) for generating reports. I have used Type4 driver for jdbc connection.
    For that, I have established jdbc connection using db2jcc.jar and db2jcc_license_cu.jar files.
    I have successfully created data source, say DB2BIRT having following requisites-
    Driver Class - com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Driver ( v3.50)
    Driver URL - jdbc:db2://localhost:50000/database_name
    User name - user_name
    Password - Password
    I have written some stored procedures and trying to use resultsets from those stored procedures into my report..
    The stored procedures having involvement of only single resultset are working absolutely fine for new dataset using above DB2BIRT.
    But, I am unable to create new dataset using stored procedures those having involvement of multiple resultsets.
    I am getting following error as -

    Can anybody address my this issue for successful implementation of stored procedure(with involvement of multiple resultsets) for creating Data set in Eclipse BIRT ?

    Well, in my stored procedure I have used 2 to3 cursors(as per my business logic) and all cursors except one are holding result sets. That exceptional cursor is intended for holding as well as returning result set after call to the procedure. And its perfectly running on db2 and returning the desired output. The problem is with Eclipse. The same procedure is not working in Eclipse BIRT.

    Or do I have to create my own PreparedStatement for this special stored procedure call using Java and Toplink?

    As the related posts suggest, you will need to use direct JDBC code for this.
    Also I'm not sure JDBC supports the RECORD type, so you may need to wrap your stored functions with ones that either flatten the record out, or take OBJECT types.
