Strange characters inserted when I create a PDF

I am using Acrobat 11, Windows 7, PC.  Someone sent me a Word Document file and when I create a PDF from it, there are questions marks inserted in many places.  The original word doc has charts inserted as "pictures".  This is where the strange characters are occurring.  Regular text is fine.  A colleague created a PDF using an earlier version of Acrobat and it worked fine.

I have figured out that I was not creating the PDF correctly (was doing it through Windows instead of Adobe).  Now that I am doing it correctly (using the Adobe tab when I'm in the word doc, then clicking Create Adobe PDF), the chart does not have the questions marks anymore but it is NOT as crisp and clean as it should be.  Text is blurred, lines in chart are faded or missing in some spots.  In the word doc the chart is crisp and clear.
Of note:  The charts that have been inserted into the document using my Windows 7 PC are fine when PDF'd.  The chart that is in question was I believe created on a Mac.  That shouldn't matter in my book but unfortunately sometimes it does.
Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Hello.  May I ask:  I am using Acrobat 6.0.2, and having trouble formatting a PDF created from multiple (jpeg) files.  Each page is formatted to A4 size, portrait.  But when I create the PDF, each sheet appears as tiny, in the middle of a huge white page.

Hello.  May I ask:  I am using Acrobat 6.0.2, and having trouble formatting a PDF created from multiple (jpeg) files.  Each page is formatted to A4 size, portrait.  But when I create the PDF, each sheet appears as tiny, in the middle of a huge white page.  I cannot seem to find any controls to adjust this.  Any advice appreciated.

Thanks CtDave, for the further info.  Unfortunately, those suggestions are not working, which is strange.
....Until last week, I used to make multi-page PDFs straight from Photoshop: File > Automate > Make PDF.  One simply choses the files, orders them, and creates a PDF.  (Resolution doesn't matter; 300 DPI is no problem.)  However, my new Photoshop CS5 does not have the option in Automate.
What I've done, seeing as Acrobat is letting me down, is use Bridge (new to me) to create the PDF.  It worked without a problem, but seems like more work than the old PS method.  I will download a newer version of Acrobat to see if that makes any difference.
.....Also, thanks Test Screen Name:  I agree with you that jpeg is irrelevant, and that one can make a PDF from Photoshop (Print > Save As - pdf).  But that only works for SINGLE PAGE pdf, not multiple pages as far as I can tell.
    Kind regards,

  • When I create a .pdf from an Office file, I have to close the original file before using.  Help?

When I create a .pdf file from an Office 2010 file (.docx or .xlsx), I cannot move, rename or alter the .pdf file until I first close the original Office file.  If I try, I get a message that the file is in use.  Is this due to some sort of cache setting?  Any suggestions?

I believe we are using Adobe drivers within Office to generate the PDF through the print function.  All of the settings appear to be Adobe.  If I launch Distiller separately and navigate to the setting I get the exact same settings form I get when I go through the print properties settings.

Hi! I believe you are trying to ask a question about Adobe Acrobat Standard. If that is the case, asking in the Acrobat forums would get it a quicker response. This forum is for Adobe Connect.
Otherwise if I mis-assumed, please rephrase to help us better understand the issue at hand.

    Hello,
How can I give a answer back in the discussion on Adobe.com?
    I don’t see any link?
    1.      We have a subscription.
    2.      Im converting a newsletter from the web to PDF.
    3.      Sometimes I put a weblink behind the image in the newsletter. Most of the time PDF wont take the links behind the image.
    Only the tekstlinks are OK.

  • When I create a PDF from Excel, there are blank cells in Excel document, when they convert to PDF the blank cells have data in them?

There are cells in the excel document that have formula's in them.  The formulas are pulling data from other blank cells, so that is why they are blank in the formulated cells.  So in Excel, they are just a dash.  When I create the PDF, the document gets opened in Acrobat and the once blank cells have data in them.  Not sure why there is data in those fields on the PDF if its blank on Excel.

Not really sure that I fixed the problem, but I did find a work around and wanted to post it if someone else runs across the same issue. Apparently the document creator used lots of custom rules and shading. If I pulled up the custom rules and shading palette and just unchecked both the custom ruling and shading boxes, it allowed me to create the print file correctly--the disappearing part numbers were on the new PDF. I didn't have to update the whole book which I didn't want to do because I feared it would mess up the rules and shading. Just unchecking the box before creating the PDF solved that issue for my purposes.

  • It used to be that when I created a pdf from a word or publisher document, hyperlinks worked fine. Now I cannot get them to work unless the text displayed for the link is the complete address and it all appears on one line. Why?

it used to be that when I created a pdf from a word or publisher document, hyperlinks worked fine. Now I cannot get them to work unless the text displayed for the link is the complete address and it all appears on one line. Why?

You can print to the Adobe PDF printer, but that only creates links that Acrobat or Reader recognize as such. That is the reason for needing the entire URL on one line. It is not actually an embedded link, but one created by Acrobat on the fly. With OFFICE 2013 you have two choices: 1. create the PDF with the print to Adobe PDF and then add the links in Acrobat so that they are complete or 2. I think the WORD save as PDF or XPS will create the PDF with links, but not sure. If so, that would be the quickest solution for you, but be aware of potential problems with the MS plugin.
Of course, the third option is to upgrade to XI which can be done with AA 9. You will probably not be eligible for a for an upgrade to whatever the next version will be.

  • Hyperlinked text--the text, not the link--disappears when I create a PDF from a book in FM 11

I am editing a FrameMaker 11 document with some text that is hyperlinked to a website. Earlier PDFs output fine. When I created the last PDF, some of the text disappeared in the PDF, but it's still visible in FM. On the PDF, the hyperlink is active in the blank space and it works to go to the website. Specifically the hyperlinked text is part numbers in a table with a shaded background--I mention this because if I open a page of the defective PDF in Illustrator--the text that has disappeared is behind the shaded square. Some of the hyperlinked part numbers are visible in the PDF--this seems almost random. It's not just part numbers or rows where I have edited something. I'm editing the document, I didn't create it. My background is InDesign and I am a novice in FrameMaker. Appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

  • Why does Framemaker 9 crash when I create a pdf?

    Hi Folks,
I get an error message and a file is created when I try to either create a PDF by 'saving as PDF' or printing. I attach the header of the log file that is created, it says to email this to an Adobe error email address. I don't know if these internal errors make any sense to you.
    === Header Begin ===
    Internal Error: 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0
    FrameMaker 9.0.0 for Intel
    Build: 9.0p237
    Window System: MSWindows
Operating System: Windows NT 5.1 (major.minor.build: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3)
    Generated on: 17 December 2012 11:16:16
    To file: C:\Documents and Settings\nglynn\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\9\FrameLog_12.12.17_11.16.16.txt
    === Header End ===
However, I MUST generate PDFs ASAP. Is there some solution or patch I can download that fixes this issue? I have, obviously, restarted my PC. I have been using Framemaker for 10 years now and have not seen this error before.
    Regards,
    Niall.

    Niall,
Unfortutanetly the error codes are only decipherable by Adobe's engineers.
Are you using the PDF Creator add-on that came with FM or do you have a full version of Acrobat (if so, which one)?
Have you tested PDF creation from any other applicaion to see if it's an Acrobat issue?
    Have tested other FM books/files?
Have you done an Acrobat repair (Help > Repair ...)?
Have you had any updates installed recently?
There was a MS security patch (KB2753842) released last week that has hosed support for OTF CFF & Type 1 PS fonts in many apps (see: http://www.thomasphinney.com/2012/12/windows-security-patch/ ). It doesn't seem to have affected my versions of FM on Win7, bu I see that you're on XP, so I can't say if there may be any issues with this.

  • Stop reader from launching when I create a PDF with PDFWriter

I've been using PDFWriter from an old (licensed) version of Adobe 4.0 in conjunction with AutoCAD and other sotware for several years (the full version is still installed on my machine), but yesterday afternoon, every time I created a PDF using it (as a printer device), Adobe Reader X started launching automatically with the created file in it and slowing down whatever application I was "printing" from (even just printing a Test Page from the properties dialogue box accessed from the printer window).  Thinking it was the result of an automatic update, I uninstalled that version and installed an older version of Adobe Reader (9.5.x), but the result is still the same.  I'm unable to locate any stand alone monitor that might've installed itself in conjunction with version X (or an update), and I cannot find any settings in the PDFWriter properties, nor in version 4.0 of Adobe or the version of Reader I'm running.  I could not find any startup items I could identify as Adobe-related.
Does anybody know how to disable this feature or turn off what I'm calling a PDF Monitor?

Actually, I went back to the help file for the full version of Acrobat I'm using and found out there's a checkbox at the bottom of the Save As dialogue box that pops up when sending the output through PDFWriter.  Somehow it had gotten checked, and since I'd never NEEDED that feature, I never paid any attention to it LOL.   Thanks anyway.  I thought there might've been a monitor installed with a Reader update that had Explorer integration and watched for creation of a certain file type (PDF in this case) since it started so out-of-the-blue.
    Thanks

  • How to keep high res when I create a pdf from Publisher doc

I created a pdf from a Publisher document, and the resolution is less than 300 dpi (about 500KB). The 1/2 page document is over 4MG as a Publisher document, so why did I lose resolution & what can I do to keep the resolution above 300?
I tried 3 different ways, "print," "press" and "print PowerPoint." Is it simply the fact I'm using the online trial?

    >Well, Aandi, I create the original images in Harvard Graphics and then print the HG file to a pdf using the Acrobat Distiller. The onscreen and printed graphic images in the pdf look pixelated along the edges--i.e., not as sharp as in the original.
Ok. Are these transparent graphics i.e. with ragged edges, or just
    rectangular graphics?
    >
    >When I called Customer Service/Sales to ask about v.9 allowing for higher res screen/print images, he checked with somebody and told me that the highest res. is 600 dpi.
I don't know why they said that. It's nonsense. Acrobat can store
images at very high resolution, though 600 dpi is considered an
enormous resolution, far higher than is needed for almost all
practical purposes. Do not confuse printer resolution with image
resolution: you don't try to match them together.
For example, a coffee table book with high quality pictures was
probably typeset on a 4000 dpi imagesetter, and the photos are
    probably around 300 dpi.
    >
    >I'm using v.5. I'm willing to upgrade if there is a reason to do so.
There are many possible reasons but higher resolutions isn't one of
them. What Distiller settings are you using for compression?

  • Image Policy when I create a PDF file: warn and continue doesn't work

    Hi!
I need to create a PDF file with lots of images, and I need to know if any of that images is in low resolution (<300 ppi). I have tried to use the image policy in the PDF settings but it doesn't work, because if I choose "Warn and continue" (if the resolution of any image is <300 ppi, warn and continue) the program creates the PDF file but don't warm me and I don't see any message... and I'm sure that there are bad images because I have made a check test with 72ppi images.
