Strange complete system freeze with no log messages

After the latest pacman -Syu, I've been having problems with hard freezes which leave no error messages on any of the log files in /var/log.
I have checked /var/log/everything.log, errors.log, Xorg.0.log, dmesg.log, kernel.log, and messages.log, but none of them indicate any problems.
In the three occasions when the system has frozen, it has occurred when I press the "enter" key (twice while browsing the web, and once in gnome-terminal), but pressing the "enter" key does not always freeze the system.  In particular, it has not been a problem when logging in via GDM.
OK, the system crashed twice again after pressing enter while typing this post.  Now, I'm resorting to copying and pasting new lines.
As I've already said, log files show no errors or any messages which indicate this sort of problem.  The screen simply freezes, there is no hard-drive activity, there is no response to keyboard or mouse inputs, I cannot switch to other tty screens.  Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't have lights for numlock, etc., so I cannot do the keyboard lights trick to check for kernel panic.
This all happened just after the most recent package upgrade, so I'll post which packages were upgraded here:

What do you mean? If you don't use GDM, you don't put it at all!
Anyway, I removed GDM from rc.conf and startx from console. So far so good, no hard freeze in one week.
Edit: Sojek you also have hard system freeze yet you don't use GDM? Does your hard freeze occurs when you hit enter?
you can also start gdm from the inittab.

  • Mavericks 10.9.4 complete system freeze on any webpage with Flash

Been running 10.9.4 without problems on this rMBP 15" 2.3GHz, 16GB RAM.  Today it started freezing when I tried to load a flash video from comedy central.  Complete system freeze, cursor stuck, no feedback, hard restart required.  I thought it might be Silverlight at first so I disallowed it in Safari and it seemed to be ok, but after loading another video the system froze again.
It now occurs for all browsers I try, Safari, Firefox, Chrome.  I have now *uninstalled Adobe Flash* via Adobe's uninstaller, and disabled extensions in Safari.  When I go to youtube.com the system freezes completely again.
I have run Disk Utility and at first it reported that repairs were needed.  I tried a Command-R restart but the computer would boot up eventually into a black screen and then I'd hear "To continue in English, press return" but then nothing would happen.  I restarted and tried to go into Safe Mode but it didn't work, read that I needed to disable FileVault for that approach.  I could still boot normally (and still can), so I disabled FileVault and have tried booting into Safe Mode.  It still doesn't work though--sometimes when I restart it just doesn't go into Safe Mode, and sometimes it goes to a black screen.  However, now when I run Disk Utility's Repair Disk, it reports no problems.
I don't know what to do from here except back up to Time Machine and restore from backup.

Thanks for your suggestion Eric.  I tried that and it gave me the recovery volume option.  But when I selected it, after a few seconds the screen went black and stayed there until a voice said "To continue in English, press return".  I'm guessing that it is in recovery mode correctly but there is a problem with the graphics card which leads to the screen shutting down.  I don't know what else I could try except taking this in to an apple bar, but holla if you have any ideas!

  • [SOLVED (in kernel 3.8.8)] Random complete system freezes

I have installed Arch Linux on my desktop, however I am getting random complete system freezes when I use either GNOME Shell or KDE 4 when using OpenGL compositing. I have resorted to using Xfce (which uses Xrender for compositing).
Sometimes the system freezes immediately upon login.
Sometimes GNOME Shell says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again." and forces me out.
Sometimes the system works fine for an hour or so before it freezes.
Sometimes the driver appears to have crashed but then recovers (screen goes blank for a second and windows/decorations are redrawn, then works fine until it completely freezes again).
I am using the xf86-video-ati driver with a ATI Radeon HD 3850. I suspect the problem is with the video driver and/or kernel.
    I have tried:
    - Using Alt+SysRq+? keystrokes after adding kernel.syseq=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf (system doesn't respond at all once frozen)
    - Keeping an SSH connection open (SSH client says "host down" once the computer is frozen)
    - Doing a memtest (ran for 11 hours with no problems)
    - Redownloading and reinstalling all packages from a different mirror (no improvement)
    - Disabling KMS (GNOME Shell runs very slow, at wrong resolution, and the resolution settings doesn't give me the option of the correct resolution)
    - Adding radeon.agpmode=-1 to my kernel parmaters (no improvement)
    - Edit: Also I tried installing linux-lts (GDM and GNOME Shell graphics ends up all broken)
I was previously using Fedora 17 with the open source driver without any problems.

  • " SYSTEM ERROR" with ERROR CATEGORY: Message and ERROR ID : GENERAL

    HI all
    I m doing JDBC -> XI -> SOAP -> XI -> FILE ( XML) scenario .I have implemented it using  BPM .
But ,In MONI , i am getting a "SYSTEM ERROR " with "ERROR CATEGORY : MESSAGE" and "ERROR ID : GENERAL" .and
One thing more is there my all adapters are active (JDBC,FILE) in runtime workbench but SOAP adapters i am not able to see it there as its services are not defined in there .Is this problem is because SOAP adapters are not defined in runtime workbench ?

    Hi Colin
    I are using SP 3.0
I have checked the Communication channel monitoring and Adapter monitering also but in mine case when i want to see the SOAP adapter in adapter monitoring , the SOAP ICON is disabled there ,so i am not able to see whats the status of my SOAP adapter i have used in my scenario
    Thanks and Regards

  • Random system freezes with different errors in syslog

    Hi,
my system freezes randomly within one to 5 days. I tried to google for the error messages, but I found very much results for e.g. "kernel: general protection fault" or nothing for e.g. find_inode_fast. Most of the time the errors seem for me to have to do with a hard drive, because:
    - the freeze is often shortly after rsnapshot ran (anachron daily job)
    - the word 'inode' in strack traces
    - (I think 'Comm' stands for 'command'?!) Comm is often something which works with a hard drive, e.g. rm, unrar, rsnapshot
So I ran 'fsck' and 'badblocks -n' on my SSD and checked the SMART status of both SSD and external drive (backup disk). But there is all fine, no errors.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction where the error can be.
Here are the full logs from journalctl http://pastebin.com/LTynE1sM and this is a shrinked version:

I also use another harddrive and another backup utility (deja dup instead of rsnapshot) for some days now, but this doesn't seems to help as you can see that 'duplicity' (deja dups utillity) was also one user space programm which froze the system. Now I try to see if microcode installation fixed the problem. I had to reboot the system for the installation of microcodes, so I have to wait and see how long my uptime gets.

  • Solaris 10 system freezes with ZFS + NFS

I've been playing around with Solaris 10 and attempting to create a file server using ZFS + NFS. While writing to the NFS share over my network the solaris system will completely freeze requiring me to hit the power button. It is a total freeze, the GUI becomes unresponsive and you are unable to ssh into the machine as well. The amount of data I can write before the system freezes varies, sometimes only a few megs, other times a few hundred.
I'm running fully up to date x86 Solaris 10 on a system with 512MB of RAM. I know this isn't the optimal solution for a ZFS server but I don't see how this could be the source of the problem either. I have tried with ethernet and wireless interfaces as well as using samba instead of NFS and all have the same issue. Writing files to Samba and NFS shares on the UFS file system on the same box didn't exhibit this problem. The logs don't contain anything about this issue as far as I can tell.
My zpool has 3 PATA disks of different sizes and have no errors. While tracking down the problem I had top going and didn't see any out of the ordinary memory or CPU usage up until the freeze.
I have been troubleshooting this issue on and off for a while and figured it was time to look for some help. I'm an experienced Linux user but quite a novice when it comes to Solaris so I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ryan

142909-17 is pretty recent (equivalent to S10u9). I scanned the list of bugs fixed since then to see if any existing fixes might resemble this and nothing seemed similar to this so I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions.

  • Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card

I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
    Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products.

  • System freezes with Safari open; what does this mean...?

    Hi:
Once in a while I have Safari open, and then my whole system freezes, even when I have Safari open in the background. The only thing I know for sure is that Safari is open when I get a system freeze.
In the system.log file I found the following warning:
'Sep 17 17:08:12 localhost /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari: * Warning: ATSUSetFontFallbacks has been deprecated. Use ATSUFontFallbacks objects instead. *'
Interestingly, I always see this line in the system.log as the last line before my system freezes. Any thoughts?
    Kind regards,
    Bas

    Hi Edwin:
Thank you for your reply. When my Powerbook is physically plugged with an ethernet cable, I will try that. However, at home I connect to the Internet wirelessly, through Airport.

  • Bcm4313 system freeze with brcmsmac

I have broadcom wireless card BCM4313 on Dell Latitude e5510.  My current kernel is 3.3.5-1-ARCH.  When I use the default brcmsmac driver, the system freeze every time I bring up the interface ("ifconfig wlan0 up").  I remove the "bcma" module and load the "wl" module from broadcom-wl package in the AUR.  When I bring the interface up with wl driver, the system doesn't freeze but the state of the card is "UNKNOWN".  dmesg shows the following errors
    [ 6192.645349] ERROR @wl_dev_intvar_get : error (-1)
    [ 6192.645354] ERROR @wl_cfg80211_get_tx_power : error (-1)
    [ 7104.869005] ERROR @__wl_cfg80211_scan : WLC_SCAN error (-22)
Has anyone seen this problem or know how to fix it?  Thanks.

I have the same card, and it is working fine. But after I tried to install broadcom-wl (AUR) a while ago (which didn't work), when reverting to brcmsmac my Arch sytem was unbootable and Debian wouldn't recognise the card.
I blacklisted wl and reset my BIOS, which made Arch boot again, and Debian load the driver (& firmware). There are no settings regarding wireless in my BIOS, the only thing I changed from factory settings were the boot order and disabling boot-on-lan.
There were no useful logs on either system, so I am not sure what happened there. But it sounds like a similar problem you guys are (were) having.

  • RS480M2 System Freeze with XN6600GT Nvidia

I have been trying to debug my new system for the last three days.
    System
    MSI RS480M2- BIOS 3.8
    AMD Athlon 64X2 4200+ running at 58C
    NX6600GT-TD128E PCE X16 Express running at 45C
    Memory- Kingston DDR400 1G CL3 -KVR400X64C3Ak2/1G

    Plextor CD/DVD Drive PX-740A 16X
    Windows XP Pro X64 Edition,Windows XP Pro x32 SP2
    Aspire 430W Power Supply, 3.3V->26A,+5V->28A,+12V->30A,-5V->.3A,-12V->.8A,+5VSB->2A
I am experiencing system freeze after playing Midtown Madness2, LEGO Star Wars and other games ater playing 5-10 minutes in both Windows XP 32 and 64 bit Versions with the MSI Nvidia card installed.
I am using XP Nvidia Driver 77.77 (x64)/76.45(x32) from MSI website as well as latest system drivers version 8.17 for the motherboard hardware.
I have tried all timing/clock settings for the DRAM in the 3.8 Bios as well as disabling the spread spectrum clock setting.
I know that the system is stable when I run with the on-board ATX Express 200 overnight and have not experienced any crases in XP64 or XP32 with the NX6600GT card removed.
I have tried to debug by trying two power supplies and tw different types of RAM.
The latest RAM and power supplies I tried were
    Corsair XMS322 CL2 1024MB (2)
    Antec ATX Supply +5V->36A,+12V->34A,3.3V->28A,-12V->1A,+5Vsb->2A,-5V->.3
Once I reinstall the Nvidia card the system starts to hang after about 10 minutes, depending on programm running.
Are there any test utilities for the NX6600GT PCi Express Card for diagnosing if the card is faulty?
    Update:10/2/2005
I reinstalled XP64 Pro fresh after reformatting drive to make sure configuration with onboard Radeon 200 Xpress was stable without the PCI Express NX6600GT-Td128E installed. Everything I run is stable.
Next I installed the NX6600GT-TD128E with the default driver on the XP x64 CD (nvidia driver 6.7.6.1 dated 12/6/2004) and the system is stable with all of the games I have test so far.
So, then I tried the MSI 77.77 drive and then the nvidia 78.0.1 drivers and both of these drivers make the system unstable. Midtown Madness will crash within 10 minutes.
I rolled back the Nvidia driver to the 6.7.6.1 Version and restarted and the system is once again stable.
I am not sure whether I have a faulty card or the newest NVIDIA drivers are unstable with the RS480M2/NX6600GT-TD128E combo.
I am currently trying to find out at which nvidia driver version my particular system becomes unstable.
10/11/05-I have installed XP32 SP2 wihtout problems if I use the older nividia drivers (series 6.x.xx). Both XP64 and XP32 SP2 Windows are stable with the RS480M2/NX6600GT-TD128E combo using
an ASPIRE Cube uATX standard power supply as long as I used the series 6 nvidia drivers(drivers of December 2004). Have been running crash free for days under both operating systems without issue.

MSI RS480M2 and nvidia cards incompatible with each others... change your mobo with nforce4 chipset or 6600gt with ati graphic card...
He just said it was running stable with an older driver version. Just no newer ones are stable. As I mentioned in the other post you can run NVidia graphics cards on an ATI chipset.
@musrock If your system is stable with the current drivers don't worry about updating them. There is really no need to update if they are working properly. Have you been able to get it to run stable with Windows XP 32bit edition?
    Good Luck

  • Macbook Pro Problem:  System freezing with staggered diagonal lines

I started getting the diagonal lines about a month ago, exactly as pictured at http://www.maclife.com/forums/topic/106465 (where I have also posted this info) , and also with a total system freeze. Restarts/reboots did nothing- sometimes I could boot from DVD but lines would appear, then finally I was able to get the DVD to work enough to do a clean install of OS X 10.5 after backing up data via target disk.
While I have a read a lot about the NVidia chip issue possibly causing problems like this, my chip is ATI.
I bought this computer less than a year ago as factory refurb off of ebay, and was shocked right away at how hot it ran. iStatPro would show the hottest temps approaching 200F. A week ago, I removed both my 1gb memory sticks and restarted with each alone- one had immediate diagonal lines, and the other booted up perfectly. So- bad memory- fine and easy, just buy new memory, but just two days ago the lines came back. Just for kicks I removed the memory and put the 'bad' one in and the system ran flawlessly. (scratches head)
Ran for a while, until in the middle of browsing through Aperture, the lines came back. Shut down, switch memory sticks again, and everything is fine again. I began to suspect temperature was the culprit- memory gets hot and stops working and put in a cold one and everything works. I've downloaded HardwareMonitor and SMC fan control and at this time am experimenting with fans speeds and running temps to see if a threshold starts to show up. Today I had the fans running at 2000rpm, and had both memory sticks in, but then got the lines (again while browsing safari and aperture open). I now have the fans at 5000 rpm with one stick of memory in.
One other thing I've noticed is that the memory controller was approaching 140F at times with the power cord plugged in and charging, but would drop immediately by 30+ degrees when I disconnected the power cord. Is that normal?
Anyway- hoping my info will give someone more technically informed than me an 'aha!' moment. Hopefully we can figure something out- I don't have Applecare!

    Hi Shawn,
The image that you linked to seems to have disappeared, I'm afraid.
I'm afraid just because you have an ATI chip doesn't mean that you can discount the possibility of a graphics hardware issue. ATI chips fail too, on occasions of course. There are other hardware possibilities with such things as well, of course. cables, inverters, etc etc.
Not sure what you were doing when you experienced that 200ºF (or which particular temp you are referring to) but it is certainly higher than you would like under normal operation. The trouble with using things like SMCfan control in such situations is that it can mask other, underlying, issues that really need to be addressed like sensor problems or ventilation obstructions. Potentially a bit like taking an asprin to deal with a brain tumor!
Personally I think you should take your Mac in to a service centre and see if the root cause of your issues can be tracked down, rather than using temporary ad hoc fixes.
    Cheers and good luck

  • System freeze with Messages open

My 27" iMac (mid-2011) is freezing on wake from sleep at least once or twice a day. This began after a Mountain Lion install and seems to be related to Messages being open and logged in when the computer sleeps. This is the only changed behavior/set up from Lion to Mt Lion. The freezes have not yet ocurred when Messages is closed. The computer is on an internal network and some files stored on the network are locked and inaccessible following a reboot. Repairing permissions has no effect. The files become available again the next day.
Thoughts? I know Messages is new and a bit buggy. Am I missing something?

  • 10.6.4 complete system freeze when resuming from screensaver-VMWare Fusion

I have a Macbook Pro, 3,1. I just upgraded to 10.6.4 and noticed the following symptoms:
Shortly after launching VMWare Fusion 3.1 running a Windows XP VM (from a Bootcamp partition), a series of pop up messages were complaining about a bad OpenGL driver. The message popped up repeatedly and wouldn't let me out, even though I kept pressing "Ok". I had to force quit Fusion, which caused a chkdsk on relaunch of the XP VM.
After a complete reboot, I started VMWare again. The Fusion complaints haven't shown up again, but when resuming from the screensaver, the system either completely freezes up, or the screen login window starts to flash rapidly and seize up. I'm running Spaces with 6 virtual screens. Whether I'm in the Fusion Spaces screen or any other Spaces screen, the system freaks out when resuming from a screensaver.
I use this system at work, so I have to be able to lock my screen when I leave my cube. The only way I've been able to ensure the system doesn't freeze up and cause a hard reset of the XP VM is to completely disable the screensaver and power saver features, such as Start Screen Saver = Never, Computer Sleep = Never, Display Sleep = Never and launch the login window by clicking on my user name in the upper right corner of the screen on the menu bar. Even that causes a sluggish screen and I'm not confident it will keep working. I also made sure (from day one) that the Windows XP screensaver functions were all completely disabled. I prefer to use the OS X screensaver for everything, if for no other reason than having a single screen locking/unlocking point for when I step away.
This was all working properly in 10.6.3. The only nit-nat I noticed about Fusion in 10.6.3 was that it had to be launched in the "Primary Window", which seems to be the upper leftmost Spaces desktop. If I ever moved it to, or started in any other Spaces desktop, it would also exhibit the same random lockups. Keeping it in the "primary" space seems to have stopped the lockups.
I noticed that there seemed to be significant updates to the OpenGL drivers in 10.6.4. I am experiencing an unfortunate side effect of these updates and hope I'm not alone and that a fix is coming soon. Looking at the other posts, there seem to be a lot of similar problems. I wanted to describe my configuration in case the Apple dev team reads these posts. Thanks.

I ended up doing an erase and fresh install of Snow Leopard (10.6.0), upgraded to 10.6.4 with the combo update, then a fresh install of all my apps, including VMware 3.1. Everything has been solid for 2 days now. I'm guessing that my system had a magic combination of issues that weren't visible in 10.6.3 but became obvious only after upgrading to 10.6.4. I had been upgrading my OS since 10.5.0 over the last 2 years and needed to do a clean re-install for some time now.
I'm guessing that others who are noticing problems with the 10.6.4 update have a similar situation with their installations. Think back on all the times a software installation failed, or the system required a hard boot. Plus, I had a lot of 3rd party apps on my box that never posted updates for later Snow Leopard releases, so who knows? Anyway, it's good to have a clean and snappy system again. A lot of my apps launch a lot faster now and survive the screen saver and power saver modes just fine.

  • System freezes sometimes after logging out of x

For some reason when I go out of x the system (at that window) freezes so I cant input anything. I can kill the process from another tty. What is it that makes it so?

There it came again. Started gxine and everything froze. I could move the mouse as I wanted too, but couldnt control anything with it. The keyboard got no responses whatsoever. Tried ctrl+alt+f2, ctrl+alt+backspace and ctrl+alt+delete. Nothing worked so I had to take out the battery.
I could watch messages pop up in irc and the gkrellm worked as normal. Neither the cpu nor proc had any unusual peaks in gkrellm. The system just wouldnt take any commands.
