Strange Mail.app behavior

Hi,
i noticed unexpected stuff in my Mail, such as:
- the trash does not appear in the left drawer
- sent messages are not stored in the sent folder
only the inbox seems to work ok
does anyone experienced the same problems?
Yann

I indeed checked there.
The sent prefererence was refereing to another address, hence no sent copy saved.
With regards to the trash, i suddenly reappeared?? maybe i should have reboot after updating the accounts.
Thx
Yann

  • STRANGE mail.app problems - Help!

A client's mail is severely screwed. here's a (brief) summary:
    OS 10.3.9
Client had mail hang & spin while having 3 replies open. Stuck in a loop, tried numerous Disk Warrior, repairs, permissions, etc etc etc... Client's Mail folder in ~/Library/Mail is huge, over 9GB (many mailboxes).
*Oddest thing: THAT mail folder cannot be copied over to external FW Hard drives (tried 2) hangs after 806mb. Got a strange error about "Incoming mail cannot be read or written" - words to that effect. I've never seen such a thing. I can't even backup that mail folder to simply wipe the drive to update to Tiger.
    ANY help appreciated!!
    Chotty

Finally I've figured out what happened for not syncing anymore what I did on the Mail.app mailbox of my Professional Exchange account.
So, the problem was the MailTags plugin: http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html
I don't know if it was after the Trial Period that went rogue, or this has happen since the install, but when I've uninstalled it, it worked just fine.
Hope this help someone with the same problem.

  • Mail app behavior

I have a new mac and am setting up the Mail app.
I have thousands of messages on my (external, non Mac) server.
Mail is trying to download ALL my messages, when i only need the last week or so.
Is there any way to have Mail NOT keep trying to download all messages? (only recent)

I have the same problem, only this time it's only like 200+ messages. Any ideas?

  • Strange Mail.app/print problem

Trying to print from Mail.app v. 2.1.2(753) to a Brother laser printer (HL-2040), sometimes only the header is printed, other times the whole message is printed. If I select Preview in the print dialog then click on Print it prints OK. This is a fairly recent problem. I suspect it first happened after upgrading to 10.4.11, but am not sure. I have repaired permissions, zapped PRAM, reinstalled the printer driver, restarted the computer, all with no change to the problem. I have not found any way to determine which messages will print OK and which will not. Others have suggested using a script to go through the Preview step every time, but that doesn't really fix the problem. There is no problem printing to an HP OfficeJet 7130xi, but that is slower and uses up expensive ink.
    TIA, Morris

after taking a look at it, I found out that changing the Mail --> Preferences --> Accounts --> Advanced --> Keep copies of messages for offline viewing setting to either "All messages, but omit attachments" or "Don't keep copies of any messages", then trashing my ~/Libary/Mail/IMAP-<insert name of account here> folder and restarting Mail to force it to resync against my IMAP server prevented the problem from occurring again
I tested this in both Mail.app 2.1.1 and 2.5.3 and it worked for both. Hopefully it will work for you IMAP users out there. I tried it in Mail.app 3.1 (Leopard) and couldn't reproduce the problem (naturally).
    Good Luck-

  • Strange Mail Box behaviors Sent Mail and Drafts ...

When i make a new mail, it always get saved in the drafts folder, also when i sent it within a couple of minutes.
    Not saving mails as draft.
All mails we sent are coming in the sent mailbox as Unread .. ?
Recieving and sending mails is working normal.
Any idea to how to solv this. I didn't updated to 10.6.3 yet, will do that next week.

    Yes, as I thought.
I have trashed the mail account (having firts deleted the emial at the email provider) and re- entered it.
    Problem solved.

  • Mail app behavior on 2G ipod touch

After spending (literally) 1.5 hours with Apple tech support on the phone yesterday, the tech was finally able to get email to work on my iPod again, which it hasn't been since 3.0 upgrade over a month ago. While I'm certainly grateful for the fix, I've noticed there's a new, odd glitch. Prior to the 3.0 upgrade, when mail came in to my ipod, the number of mails coming in showed up on the main Accounts screen, which lists my 5 email accounts. Now, in order to fetch/see/read mail, I have to click each individual account, then its Inbox. One exception: Gmail always grabs mail that shows up on the main Accounts screen, just as it always did in the good ol' 2.2.1 days, when everything worked well. Very odd. Any suggestions so I don't have to be on the phone with Apple support (getting routed from tech to tech until one has the answer) for yet another 1.5 hours? Much appreciated.

Yes, it can I have a 2G ipod Touch too.
It's perfect, you don't have multi-tasking but folders and ibooks, which is pretty cool.
    I recommend you get it

  • Unread messages in IMAP inbox not fetched unless quit & relaunch Mail.app

I posted a similar question re: same Mail.app behavior under 10.5.x , but it remains unresolved and for some reason the post has been archived so I can't follow up there. please see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2096360&tstart=0
I want to re-ask the question here now that I've updated to 10.6.2 AND migrated to a brand new iMac, and tried some other debugging - yet my problem persists. Hopefully someone here can help
    Problem:
    - only affects 2 of 3 users on my iMac. On my main (admin) account, Mail.app works just fine.
    but, on affected accounts:
    - launching Mail retrieves all unread emails from IMAP account, as expected
    - if Mail.app is then left running, any new incoming emails arriving on IMAP server are NEVER retrieved by Mail.app, regardless of the Preference setting of how often to check for mail
    - clicking on the Get Mail button similarly fails to retrieve any new mail. it's as though Mail.app thinks there is no new mail on server
    - meanwhile new mail on IMAP server is confirmed to exist (e.g. checking via webmail access)
    - quitting and relaunching Mail.app then finds the waiting email and shows it in the Inbox, but after that no new emails are ever retrieved without quitting and relaunching again
    - while stuck in this "there's no new email" state, rebuilding the Inbox causes unread email on IMAP server to be found and loaded to inbox, however once again after that no new email is ever seen until quit and relaunch (or rebuild inbox again)
debugging steps I have tried, none have changed the problem:
    - deleting com.apple.mail.plist file
    - rebuilding Inbox, as noted above
    - moving ~/Library/Mail folder to desktop, then re-importing all mail messages
since the problem has followed the 2 users from my old iMac to new, it seems whatever is causing the problem was transferred by Migration Assistant. But for the life of me I can't find what's different between my working admin user account and the two other accounts. Perhaps there is some other mail-related settings file or folder that's been corrupted somewhere that I'm not aware of?
has anybody else noticed this behavior with Mail.app, or have other debugging suggestions?
    thanks in advance

I get the same behavior, but only on one IMAP account and seemingly only after Mail.app has been running for a while. Once it gets in its wonky state, new incoming messages are ignored by Mail.app no matter how many times I tell it to resynchronize... If I restart Mail.app it will pick up new messages for a while, then stops at some point. My iPhone and webmail client have no problem getting the messages.
I have other IMAP accounts that always behave in Mail.app. So, I think something between Mail.app and particular IMAP servers is a little wonky, but not across the board.
<edit> My one misbehaving account is also a dreamhost account.. </edit>

  • Mail.app and recalcitrant email servers

There's a Mail.app behavior that really bothers me, and I think it should be changed. That is, whenever Mail can't connect to its server for whatever reason, it prompts you for your password, giving you the option to save it in your keychain. This drives me nuts.
One, the vast majority of the time, there's nothing wrong with Mail, it just can't find the server. Two, if I've already saved the password in my keychain, then prepopulate this error message with my (obscured) password, so I can just hit enter: as it is, I don't know whether or not my password in my keychain will get blown away if I don't check that checkbox when I do fill out this unnecessary error dialogue. Three, a better error would just be, "Mail.app cannot connect to the server, would you like to try again later?"
    This has always bugged me.

I'm having the same problem, taking off SSL did nothing. Mac Mail still gets nothing, seems to be able to send things fine, but no receipt; the problem started in Feb this year. I have been using Entourage since then and it seems to work fine. I'd rather use Mac Mail.

  • Adding attachments - Mail.app crash & Safari crash

Trying to add a 4kb text file to email using Mail.app - Mail crashes
Using my webmail access, in Safari, adding same 4kb text file - Safari crashes
Using my work webmail access (which is Exchange or Outlook based), in Safari, adding same 4kb text file - Safari crashes
Nothing has changed except Snow Leopard. The text file was created using TextEdit. No graphics, just text ("rtf" extension). I have nothing in my trash, so cannot securely empty trash.
And, no, just because I have >50 Safari windows open would not explain why Mail.app crashes when trying to add an attachment.
Could this have anything to do with the built-in anti-malware???

    Hi Ernie,
I have one POP account (Hotmail) and three other IMAP accounts (one of them is my MobileMe account).
I have tried the following without any improvement in Mail.app behavior:
    1) Tried to delete the contents of ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder (there were no files there).
    2) Dragged com.apple.mail.plist from /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences to the desktop.
    3) repaired disk permissions (both from HD boot and SL disk boot) of MacintoshHD using Disk Utility. Then restart. This helped a little, but problem persists.
    5) changed sharing permissions in the Downloads folder for Everyone from no access to read only.
    6) saving email as draft first (before making and attachment) then attaching the file.
    7) dragging the ~/Library/Mail/Mac~ folder to the desktop. restart mail...
    8) dragging the ~/Library/Mail/ folder and the com.apple.mail.plist file to the desktop. recreate account settings...
None of these attempts have worked. The last two (#7& #8) were suggested in the posts from the links you suggested I try out.
The only thing that has worked so far is creating a new admin user (from System Preferences>Accounts>Add a User Account>). Then logging in to the new account, opening mail, and recreating the same mail accounts that are on the original user account. Mail was able to send emails with attachments. Once I logged back into the original user account, mail would crash when sending an email with an attachment.
I don't know if this helps, but mail will crash even if a file is not attached (if you go to attach a files, but then cancel instead).

  • Mail app strange behavior, default and all mailboxes not accessible

hello community! i have had this problem from months now and maybe years...a couple of days ago i bought my 5S and i thought that this should have pushed me to fix this and not just work around it...
so here's the deal MAIL APP, iPhone 5S 7.0.3
i have mail app setup with 5 gmail accounts, which receive and send email just fine, the problem comes when i need to check emails...here's what happens.
    i open the mail app
SOMETIMES i see on the bottom "downloading 250 email" (50 last emails for 5 accounts).
IF im fast enough...i would be able to enter in my default account or "all mailboxes", if i wait like a couple of seconds, boom! all mailboxes and default account become unaccessibe (GREY, like in the screenshot)...and they stay like this
when i manage to access the "all mailboxes", i see a bunch of NO SENDER emails that appear and disappear after a few seconds, all dated 1.1.01 and the email conversations with more than 1 email, i would be able to tap it, it would get evidenced but it wouldn't open the email conversation, this happens sometimes, sometimes it opens...
i have tried searching this issue, but nothing seemed as this, only found some random use with the no sender or duplicate emails, not my case...no sender emails appear and go away in manner of 2 seconds.
workoround: Gmail app works just fine, but i would love to use the native mail app
screenshot attached, i hope someone can help here. I ave covered the rest of the email accounts, but i assure you that they are black and not grey like the top ones.

and so again happened, was sending an email from my default account and boom!!
however, the email was sent, then this happened. this time the emails are from the 70's, probably someone that decided to pull my leg seein me in the future...lol

  • Latest Mail.app strange behavior

    Hi,
My Mac recently downloaded and upgraded my system to 10.10.1, and ever since Mail.app has really been annoying when I make it active from the Dock.  Prior to this release, I could select from among several mail account inboxes and that selection would stick across hides and opens.  Now however, Mail seems to think it's best to open with the selector bar highlighting "Inbox", which then displays all current inbox emails.
Is there some way to defeat this problem?  I really don't want to have every inbox's contents displayed when I open Mail.  I go through them at different times according to the account.
    Mail Version 8.1 (1993)
    Many thanks,
    -Tod

  • Is Mail.app one of the "erratic" behavior apps with a reset system clock?

I am hoping someone can help with a fine detail of mail.app (v2.1.3) behavior.
I had an incident where an iMac sent out 200+ smtp hits a minute and was tossed of the network for presumed zombie spaming.
I think I have actually tracked the problem to an unfortunate conjunction of circumstances that is actually innocent (if still annoying)
Let me set up the story:
    1. This is a common use computer, so Mail is not configured (except that it is --I'll get to that in a moment) and
    2. Safari will invoke Mail when you click on an "email link"
Mostly everyone just quits mail if they goof and click an email link.
BUT some time ago at least one person invoked Mail and composed a message. This message, naturally, remained in the outbox ever since. That person learned that they can't send email that way, so ever since they just cmd-Q Mail.
BUT Before this person learned, they walked through the mail-config and told mail to try hitting smtp.mac.com:"nonExistantUser".
So that covers the lead-up. Two days ago, mail was invoked via a Safari link, BUT it wasn't quit, it was sent to the background.
Where it undoubtedly tried to send the outbox repeatedly until it was kicked off the network.
Here is what I don't understand:
Under this scenario of a mis-configured .mac address, will mail repeatedly try and fail to smtp at the maximum possible rate?
    OR
Is the one other factor I am about to describe responsible?
    The one other factor:
The clock battery is dead and there was a power failure at 4am that day.
The system clock reset to 1969.
    Of course, nobody reset it.
Is mail.app one of the apps that the finder message warns "may behave erratically"?
(a GROSS simplification) does it have a bit of code like:
    1 check time-of-last-send-mail-attempt
    check newest-item-in-outbox
if newest-item more recent then last-send-attempt
    do send-mail and record time-of-last-send-mail-attempt
    and go to 1
else wait X minutes and go to 1
which, if the clock was mis-set to 1969 would always record a last-send-attempt prior to anything in the outbox and trigger a send loop.
Does anyone know if either Mail is tenacious about sending to a bad .mac address, or gets ridiculous under this circumstance for bad-clock-set?

  • Strange problem with the mail app on an iPad

I've got a bit of a strange problem with the mail app on an iPad - it's sending and receiving mail ok but won't let you delete mail. If you keep at it, it appears as if you have deleted mail (though takes a very long time as you just have to keep deleting it over and over again) -  but the size of the app still keeps going up - reached 600mb so far, even though there is hardly any mail or attachments (goes up quite a lot each time you try to delete anything) - any idea what's causing this and how I can fix it?
It occasionally comes up with a dialogue panel saying to check my account settings, but I have checked those and they are fine. The little 'loading' icon just keeps spinning constantly too.

go to Settings > Mail > your account > Advanced > Move Discarded Messages Into
and make sure that Deleted Mailbox is ticked, and not Archive Mailbox
You can also adjust how long the deleted mail stays in the trash immediately below that.
If you are talking about a gmail account, you may also have to login to your account on the gmail server and update the settings there.  This is what Barney previously posted about that:

  • Strange problem pasting and backspacing in Mail.app

I've been having a strange problem in Mail.app when composing messages.  Suppose I have a short, three-line message like this:
    Hi John,
    Here's the quote from Einstein:
Simple enough, right?  So then I go to another application -- for example, Firefox -- to copy some text that I want to paste in.  I put the text cursor at the point where I want to paste the text; in this example, after "Einstein:".  I paste.  And then it looks like this:
    Hi John,
"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
    Here's the quote from Einstein:
That's right: it pastes the text ABOVE the line where I want it, instead of just on the same line.  It doesn't matter if I choose regular "Paste" or "Paste and Match Style."
Now, I tried to be smart, and put a blank line below where I wanted to the text.  When I paste it in, I get the pasted text below "Einstein:" just as you would expect. But if I click at the beginning of the pasted text, and then press backspace so it goes up to the previous line, then it jumps ABOVE the line I want and the result is identical to the one illustrated above.
Any ideas? This is driving me nuts. When I have copied text that I want to paste into an e-mail, I have to compose my messages elsewhere (usually BBEdit) and then paste them into Mail.app in their entirety.  HELP!
Also, no: I have zero copy/paste problems in any other application.  I have no clipboard add-on software, either.
(note that I'm at OS X 10.5.8 despite the "product" remark below)

I have the same problem. It also happens in notes.
Now I created a note in Mail on my Macbook and had this problem: Backspacing a line moved it above the previous paragraph. Then I opened the same note on my Ipad, and I did not have the problem, I could simply backspace the same line and it was connected to the end of the previous paragraph. What I did see in my Ipad note however was that the two paragraphs had a different font (which was not visible on macbook, until I edited it on my Ipad). Somehow my macbook mail creates unsolicited separate paragraphs, which use different invisble fonts, and these paragraphs may not be merged.
The same problem probably also causes email messages that I compose on my macbook to end up at the recipient in a very different font (i.e., lines/ paragraphs are larger and/or in different font.) than what I see when composing the message. This is really annoying, because it makes you look like a complete moron who is unable to compose a properly edited message.

  • Strange characters when receiving mail in mail.app

    Hi,
I am having an issue with certain e-mails in mail.app cannot be read due to very strange charachers.
I have already seen that problem with entourage and it's just the matter of deleting a font cache but here I cannot seem to get around it..
    Any idea someone?
    Cheers
    Ben

Sometimes these problems are caused by the fonts Times Phonetic and Helvetica Fractions. Delete them if you have them.
Or it could be an encoding issue. Send a screen shot if you want (tom at bluesky dot org).
