Stream to airport express devices simultaneously

I currently have two airport express units in my house. They were purchased 2 years ago within 6 months of each other. I have them currently connected as one network. However I can not figure out how to stream Itunes to them simultaneously. Whenever I open Itunes the only options on my dropdown list are computer, living room (express #1) and office (express #2). Please help with instructions or suggestions.
Thanks

I found the update necessary to make the airport stream to multiple units.

I have just changed internet providers from BT to Virgin, and now my iTunes doesn't show any of my airport express devices.  I assume that I have to reconfigure them to the the new wireless but how do I do this frmo my PC?  Thanks

I would recommend that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on each of your AirPort Express base stations. Once completed, you can use the following Apple Support article to configure each base station for streaming.

  • Can I stream video to 2 devices simultaneously?

I know I can stream audio to 2 devices simultaneously, but can I do it for video as well.  I have my computer connected directly to my stereo through a toslink.  When I play a movie on my computer I use it to do the audio.  I have a second set of speakers connected to terminal b on the receiver that are in the living room.  Using the remote app on the iPhone I can control the computer playback.  These speakers are standing next to my big screen which is connected to my apple tv.  I'd like to have the video play on the big screen (which I can do) but have the audio also play on the stereo, which I can't figure out.
Am I missing something, or is this a limitation of airplay?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Not controlling things from AppleTV 2
AppleTV 1 used to be able to output its audio to an Express AppleTV cannot.
    Maybe using Airplay from itunes/idevice.

  • I can't access my 1st generation airport express devices using airport utility

I have a new Motorola Surfboard Extreme wireless cable modem & router set-up on my main internet cable line. To it i've connected 1st generation airport express using an ethernet and extended it with another 1st generation airport express so i can connect to itunes and a remote printer.  When I go to Aiport Utility to perform the set-up, i'm told i need to update to version 5.6.  When installing Aiport Utility 5.6 I receive an error prior to completion which prevents me from performing the set-up or even seeing the two airport express devices in the program.  Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

By "1st generation" AirPort Express are you referring to the 802.11g or 802.11n model? Version 5.6 of the AirPort Utility would be required to administer the older 802.11g Express.
If you do have an 802.11g model, are you actually running OS X 10.7.5 on your Mac?

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

  • Can I link a chain of airport express devices to use as wifi extenders?

    Hi all,
At work we have a large warehouse, office at one end, offices at the other end and warehousing in the middle (to keep things simple) .  I would like one single wifi network for the whole building so I can link up Filemaker to iPads, iPhones, Macbooks etc.  I have bought two Airport Express devices and put them at two ends of the building but they don't reach each other so I've temporarily set up two wifi networks.  I will need a 3rd, maybe even 4th Airport Express.
    My question is this:
Can I form a chain of airport express devices to use as wifi repeaters from the first?  i.e. Can a repeated wifi signal be repeated again?
Or in other words... say I have 4 airport express devices (A, B, C, D) and only A is linked to the network with a cable...B repeats the signal from A. (A is out of reach of C and D).  B repeats the wifi signal from A to C...C repeats the wifi signal to D...will this work/is it possible?
    Thanks!
p.s. hopefully I haven't confused you too much

Hi - Tesserax is right - you can't do this wirelessly but I notice that you say that you have temporarily set up two wi-fi networks - does this mean that you have access to ethernet connections - if you do and the distances aren't too long, then you can do it by placing wired base stations where their wi-fi would overlap - you would then set up each to create a wireless network with the same name, password and security type - and as long as they are on the same subnet, you would have a roaming network so that clients can move from one "zone" to the next without having to re-connect - I have 2 parallel networks using 8 Extremes and 2 Expresses connecting 3 hangars and 3 offices and it works great.

  • How can I find my Mac Adress for the Ethernet Port from a Apple Airport Express Device ?

How can I find my Mac Adress for the Ethernet Port from a Apple Airport Express Device ?

You can only locate, lock or erase your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.

  • Hey! i wonder what steps are need to set up an iphone or an ipad as an Airport Express device, so it uses its wifi capabilites to capture a music stream, being conected to a pair of speakers in my living, or in my bedroom ?

I know that i can receive in my iphone the streamed music of the itunes library but this happends as an indepent music stream from the one already  playing in the computer
I would like those to be in sync:
so i ca n set my whole house under one music stream, with my 2 iphones4, my ipad, and  1 airport express. plus the local pc in my offifce,
The airport express is hooked at the livingroom with a 4.1 set tha rocks.
my local pc is hooked to a Sony 5.2
then mi iphones could be at the master room and the other in the kitchen.
while managing the 4 individual streams with independent volume levers.
justa as if they where all airpor express devices
Is understood that the iphone 4 obviously exceeds the technological requirements to achieve such a task. !

you should be able to do what you want using Airfoil.

  • Can AEBS, wired Airport Express and WDS Airport Express devices be mixed?

I have been using an AEBS and three Airport Expresses (non N)in a WDS network using mixed b/g/n with two b/g mac minis, a b/g/n macbook and a b/g macbook for several years but have noticed the speed and reliability flucuating. I wish to do more music streaming and would like to improve the speed and reliabilty.
I have cat5 in several locations in the house.
Can I use the AEBS as a base wired to two Airport Expresses in different parts of the house(probably set as bridge) to extend my wireless g network and stream music to fixed points and then extend the network (?wds) with a non wired Express near one of the wired Express devices?
    Thanks
    Jim

My Macbook with "n" runs on the 5ghz network...it must be pulling that directly from the AEBS.
So I would guess that your AEBS is actually a simultaneous dual-band 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ... correct? If so, then it would certainly make sense that the MacBook is connected to its 5 GHz radio.
My wired AXs will be in two very different areas of the house. Is it possible to wire them as bridges, then set each as a WDS base to extend to their local area?
I assume that you intend to create two different WDSs ... correct? If so, this should be possible. You will need at least four AXs to do so. Each WDS would have the main base station connected to the AEBSn by Ethernet; configured as a bridge, and as the main in the WDS. For each of the mains, you would have another AX configured as the remote.
Since the mains are both configured as bridges, all wireless clients connected to either WDS should be able to see clients connected to either WDS or the AEBSn.

  • IMac (on Ethernet) Can No Longer Stream to Airport Express (on WiFi)

After years of reliable service, all of a sudden I cannot stream music from iTunes on my iMac, via my Airport Express, to my stereo system.
First, a bit about my configuration:
       * iMac connected via Ethernet to a wireless router (D-Link DIR-655).
       * iMac Airport (WiFi) is turned off.
       * D-Link sets up a wireless network, and Airport Express joins the network.
       * Airport Express does not set up its own network, it's simply a client of the existing D-Link wireless network.
       * iTunes "sees" the Airport Express, and can stream audio via AirPlay.
       * iPad also joins the wireless network, and also can stream to the Airport Express via AirPlay.
       * iMac running 10.6.8, with all software updates applied.
       * Airport Express running latest firmware (7.6.1).
Well, that was a few days ago, when "it just worked". But for some unknown reason iTunes could no longer "see" the Airport Express.
So I took my Airport Express to the Apple Store and they did a Factory Reset, but it did not solve the problem. I figured my rather old Airport Express was failing, so today I bought a new one. The symptoms have changed a bit, but even after spending an hour on the phone with AppleCare, it doesn't work properly.
Now, the only way the iMac can stream to the Airport Express is if the iMac also joins the wireless network. In fact, now with Airport turned OFF on the iMac, the Airport Utility cannot see the Airport Express. But here's another weird thing: when I use the IP address of the Airport Express, the Airport Utility CAN connect with and manage the Airport Express, even with Airport turned OFF on the iMac!
I should also mention, the iPad has no issues whatsoever connecting to the D-Link's wireless network and streaming music to the Airport Express.
This all seems like something might have changed on the D-Link wireless router. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out what setting(s) on the router might allow the iMac - over Ethernet - to stream audio to the Airport Express.
Another thing. When I have Airport turned on on the iMac, it can "see" and stream to the Airport Express, but the music has very frequent drop-outs. Could this be related to the fact that the iMac has two IP addresses (one on Ethernet, one on WiFi)?
My goal is to get things "back to normal", where I can turn off Airport on the iMac, and all LAN and WAN traffic from the iMac goes over Ethernet. I have a few questions (for now :-)
       * Since my iMac has two connections to my LAN using two IP addresses (Ethernet & WiFi), is that likely to cause any issues?
       * When two computers join the same wireless LAN, can they effectively talk directly to one another, or does the wireless router need to be involved every time one computer sends a TCP or UDP packet to the other?
       * Do routers (or the DIR-655 in particular) tend to have any firewalls or policies that control connections on the LAN between Ethernet and WiFi clients?
       * Since AirPlay uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353, would the DIR-655 need any special configuration to "open these ports" so an Ethernet client can connect with a WiFi client?
So, any help would be most appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Jim

I am having a very similar issue.  I use my Airport Express (AX) to stream music from the computers on my network to my stereo via Airplay.  I have AX set up to wirelessly join my existing wireless network, which uses a D-Link DIR-655 router hooked to a Time Warner cable modem.  I can succesfully connect all of my wireless devices via Airplay, through iTunes to my AX, including two laptops and an iPhone.  However, my primary desktop PC, which does not have a wireless card is linked directly via ethernet cable to my D-Link router, and it is not able to see my AX.  Similar to your case, I can see the Airport Express from my PC through my Airport Utility by directly typing in the IP address.  Note that the  AX set-up option to allow Ethernet clients is checked.  I also noticed that my laptops will stop detecting AX if I directly connect them to my D-Link router via Ethernet and turn off their wireless cards.  They will resume detecting AX when I turn their wireless connections back on.  I have tried every conceivable setting of my D-Link router to no avail.

  • Sound breaking up on Airplay if I stream to Airport Express and Apple TV

I have recently bought an Airport Express and latest Apple TV. Both are running nicely on my network, and I can use Airplay to stream music to either from my iMac, but if I try to stream to both then the sound breaks up? Can anyone advise why and how to fix this? Could it be my wireless network isn't up to it (11g)
    Many thanks for any advice!

I am not sure this is entirely relevant but since I found these discussions helpful when I had a similar problem here is my two penn'orth.
We have a complex system with two Airport Extremes and 4 Airport expresses of various vintages.  One of these was an old (meaning 'g' only & needs Airport Utility 5.6 to service) one, but this had wireless set to 'off' and only served to stream sound to the house HiFi.  This one and all but one of the others were roamed (that is Ethernet cable connected), as is the Mac Mini House server (other machines are WiFi).
Breaking up (& other intermittent network issues) only seemed to start with Maverick.  I solved this very persistent problem by replacing the old Express with a new one (in fact replacing one of the others and using that).  I could conjecture that this had been the only node on the network not capable of GE (though some devices like webcams are not either), but I do not see why this was important.
I still think this rather strange - even the presence or absence of high-data services like eyeTV Netstream made no difference.  But having solved it I should not complain - though it would be nice to understand it.  It would also be nice if the Airport Extremes included a sound port...
All the Airport devices had been carefully set up according to Apple's default recommendations - so yes some might use 5GHz, though shutting this down did not help. (they still are).
    Hope this helps someone!

  • Front Row + Audio Streaming to Airport Express...

I purchased an airport express and have been able to successfully stream my itunes to the device. However streaming from front row seems to be a problem. Does front row support audio streaming? I would love to be able to use my apple remote to control my music using the television screen. The remote seems to be useless with itunes.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Front Row under Leopard doesn't support Airtunes streaming:

  • Streaming to Airport Express while connected to different network?

    Hi all,
Quick - and possibly trivial - question: is it possible (on a Mac) to use a non-airport express wifi router for Internet access and at the same time stream my iTunes library to my hifi-set via an airport express station?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Sebastian,
I have personal experience in this quest, though I didn't have a non-airport express for the wifi internet portion. In order for you to stream music from your computer, laptop or otherwise, you have to select the wireless network you set up with the Airport Express, thus taking you off the the wireless network you set up with the non-airport express router.
I found this out a few months ago. Nice idea, but you can only be on one wifi network at a time. So, yes, you can stream music to the Airport Express, but then you will not be able to cruise the internet, simultaneously.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Streaming to Airport Express do I need a DAC

I'm streaming my music from my iPhone, iPad and Macbook pro to my airport express. This works fine for me but I feel
    that the sound lacks quality.
I currently airplay all music to my airport express and this is connected to 2 amps. I have an output splitter connected to the analog output port
of the AE and the sound is sent to the two amps.
I've read up on various DAC's and I think I will invest in one low budget device, so that I can connect the AE to the DAC via the optical cable and then
run an analog cable to 1 one my amps (i can them link the feed from this amp to the other)
Has anyone had a similar situation and can someone recommend some DAC's for me? I've been looking at the Audio engine D1, Beresford
    & Nu-force dac systems

Thanks, now we need a bit more information, please, in order to provide you with the correct information that you need.
I assume that you already have one AirPort Express.....either a model A1264 or A1392.....set up and operating OK, is that correct?
If yes, you can extend the network either by using wireless or an Ethernet cable with a second AirPort Express.....either the A1264 or A1392 model. A wired connection is the way to go, if possible, since it provides better performance.  But, wireless might work OK for you if you want to try that.
Let us know "how" you want to extend......wireless or wired?
