Streamclip settings

I'm trying to rip some of my old work off an old showreel DVD for a new reel. I use mactheripper and then drag the VOB file into Streamclip and export as a quicktime movie. I can't find a way to get it as DV pal anamorphic and keep making 4:3 movies instead. This is all Dv pal stuff and the new reel will be in a dv pal anamorphic sequence.
What compression option should i be using in the quicktime export options in Streamclip?
Cheers for your help.

Anamorphic video IS 4:3.
Load it into FCP and then in the browser... slide over until you see the aspect column. Click there to make anamorphic if it isn't already checked.
Good luck,

  • Streamclip Settings For Multiclip

So I have tried setting it to Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC and it will not work in Multiclip and I get no options under RT on my timeline. However if I then export from Quicktime choosing DV/DVCPRO it will work with Multiclip and I get my options under Timeline. Of course converting in Streamclip and then Exporting from FCP and then going back into FCP to edit again with multiclip will take twice as long as it should. So I am wondering what settings in Streamclip will work so not only do I have no rendering to worry about, but the clips will also work just fine with multiclip?

What format are the video clips before you go through MPEG Streamclip?

  • Best MPEG Streamclip settings

I've looked at the prior discussions of this subect on these forums and they are several years old, therefor may not be accurate for FCPx, and some refer to screenshots of settings which are no longer available.
I am having to import video from disc sources since the original source material is no longer available. I want to bring the best possible quality into FCP possible so as not to degrade the video/audio quality any further. I have been advised to use an uncompressed intermediate format but some of the previous posts on the subject indictate this is not an option when bringing video into FCP.
So, what are the best settings for MPEG Streamclip for this purpose. Most of the video in question was what would be classified as standard def, some as high def (at least 720p, possibly some 1080p). Output will likely be in various formats and viewed on various devices, up to (and including) 1080p screens. So I'd rather keep the quality at as high a level as possible throughout the process.
    Thank you in advance.

Tom, I had this same question last week. I'd like you to expound, if you could. Two Q's:
1.) What is the difference between "HQ" (obviously "high-quality") and "LT?"
2.) When converting MPEG-2 for edit in FCPPX, I found "Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 worked VERY well. So, is "422LT" better?

  • Best Streamclip settings for iPhone 4 Video - to edit in FCE

First, the problem: iPhone 4 records HD video in h.264. But Final Cut Express doesn't have sequence settings for editing h.264 or iPhone video clips.
The solution: I'm using Streamclip to convert all of my iPhone 4 videos to a format FCE lets me edit in.
Question: What are the optimal settings to insure that my final output retains quality almost equal to the original video shot on my iPhone? (More specifically, I plan on uploading to Youtube as a HD video).
I've read somewhere that I should convert to Quicktime Movie format, with Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30fps. Is that the best compression type to convert to for editing iPhone 4 videos in FCE? If so, how should the other settings in streamclip be jiggered? For instance, does it make much difference if I set the Quality slider to 100% (As opposed to the default at 50%?) What about audio compression settings?
(P.S. I think it's very annoying that I can't directly edit a video from iPhone 4 on another consumer Apple product, the FCE. Does FCP let me directly edit h.264/iphone 4 videos?)

The slider makes no difference as AIC is variable bit rate within a specific range. No audio compression in FCE ever. Uncompressed stereo 48k, the video standard sample rate.
It would be truly miraculous if FCE worked with iPhone media as the current version predates it by three years, which in computer lifetimes is two generations, basically the equivalent of your grandfather having developed an app for a smartphone when he was a young man. FCP is a mere year old, well before the iPhone did video. Furthermore, if you'd read the forums, you'd see that H.264 is an acquisition and delivery forward. It is not used in production. The codec is not suitable for efficient production and really should never be used there. It's very unfortunate that camera manufacturers have taken the cheap way out and used this codec, rather than actually developing and using a suitable intraframe production codec.

  • Correct streamclip settings help

I've imported VHS analog video through my Canopus ADVC-110, with Easy Setup DV-NTSC DV Converter. Now I want to add some other files from a DVD which are AVI files. In Using MPEGStreamclip, I've tried various export settings. When I import the files, only the ones I exported to DV have rendered video (audio not rendered). (I set audio uncompressed at 48kHz.)
What settings should I be using?

If you still have the DVD, use MPEG Streamclip to open the VOB files (don't use the AVI files). Set the IN and OUT points where you need them, then go to File->Export to QuickTime. When the Export window opens, open the Compressor drop-down menu and choose Apple DV/DVCPro NTSC. Next set the audio to uncompressed 48khz, 16 bit. Set the frame rate to 29.97 and the quality to 100%.

  • MPEG Streamclip Settings for Canon 7D

I'm struggling to successfully render the raw Canon 7D video into an acceptable codec for Final Cut Express. I imported the video to my hard drive via memory card. We shot 1080i.
In MPEG Streamclip I use the following settings:
    - Export as Quicktime
    - Apple Intermediate Codec
    - 24fps
    - Uncheck interlacing
    - Tried both sizes of 1080i and 1920 X 1080 (unscaled), and also unlikely sizes
    -Other settings are default
When I import the video into FCE, the monitor says "unrendered." Any help is much appreciated.

Final Cut Express does not support 24fps; never has. If you must work with 24fps material, then you need Final Cut Pro.
To use the material in FCE, you can change the frame rate in MPEG Streamclip when you convert to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec. You will have to experiment to see what the results are. It will be better if you shoot your video in 60i since you are in Canada (an NTSC country).

  • Best MPEG Streamclip settings for exporting a .mov file? Please help!

Am really stuck... I have a 1.6GB VOB file (which also exists in copy as a 2GB and a 1GB .mov file). I need to make a quicktime copy of the movie to upload online, but the maximum limit is 500MB. Because it's for a contact for a film festival, it needs to be as high quality as humanly possible, but has to be sent online. What precise settings should I use? I'm in the UK. Can anyone help me? Would be seriously grateful.

We don't care how big the original is; it is the length that matters. Take your limit of 500MB and multiply by 1024 to get megabits. Divide that number by the length in seconds of your movie. That is your bitrate in megabits per second. Duplicate one of the best-quality presets and change the bitrate. Make sure all the high quality options are on.

  • Output Settings "Share" Final Cut Pro 10.1.2

I've used MPEG StreamClip to convert videos to make them smaller and still look OK. What settings can I use in FCP to "share" that will give me similar results? I've experimented and can't seem to hit on any that do as good of a job. I want to eliminate the extras steps of using StreamClip. IThe screenshot is the StreamClip settings I use.

In Compressor, we are able to create custom settongswith the ability to adjust a lot of size/quality parameters. Typically customs settings are created wither by duplicating a preset or by clicking the Plus button in the lower left of the Settings pane. When we click that button, we get a drop down – one of the choices of which is MPEG 4. If I select that, here is what the video pane looks like by default.
A lot of things need to be changed here, including the resolution (Frame Size) and Pixel Aspect Ratio and Data Rate.
The first screen shot you posted is of one of the Apple Device stock presets. The second is also a stock preset – primarily used for self hosted Web content.

  • DVD Studio Pro/MPEG Streamclip and PAL

    Hello All:
I'm trying to convert several PAL DVDs to NTSC. I'm using MPEG Streamclip to convert the PAL VIDEO_TS folders. Then I'm compiling them on Studio Pro.
My Streamclip settings are as follows:
    Export to Other Formats>
    Quicktime>
    DV/DVCPRO NTSC>
    Best>
    29.97>
    16:9>
    740 x 480>
    48KHz/16bit
I'm getting a lot of artifacting (picture shifts during pans, jagged edges (interlacing?), etc.)
They don't look bad on my computer monitors in either app, but of course a burned DVD playing on a real-world Sony broadcast monitor tells a much different story.
Does anyone have any setting(s) suggestions to smooth over these problems?
    Thanks!!

First off, thanks to everyone for all your great suggestions.
Agreed that the material was compressed to begin with. (Begin rant)...I'm amazed that so many people have a finished DVD they've spent hundreds on, yet apparently have no access to source material or even assets. No matter how I try to explain why the finished product won't look as good as what they gave me, the response is "it's DVD--DVD always looks great. Why can't you make it look great?" (end of rant, thanks...)
I'm on a PPC running Final Cut Studio 1 (so ProRes is unavailable to me). I took the footage to another system (Intel dual-core running FCS 3), used ProResLT, and to tell you the truth, I didn't see any noticeable difference--fade ups/downs are jerky, jagged lines between light & dark areas, etc. I'm also playing them back on both Sony and JVC broadcast monitors. I did some research on past threads, and downloaded and used JES Deinterlacer--no change. Even untrained eyes notice the problems.
I guess I was looking for someone who had had the same issue, and had a silver bullet to share with me. I've been on this for two days now, and my options are drying up. If I do succeed, somehow, I'll report back on what I did.
    Thanks again.

  • Importing video from iPhone 4 to QuickTime

I've seen several threads on this topic, but when I use MPEG Streamclip, my iPhone 4 footage comes out jumpy and stretched. I'm importing into iPhoto, dragging the clip onto the desktop, then dragging the desktop file into MPEG Streamclip. There I select:
    File: Export to QT Video
    Compression: Apple Intermediate CODEC
    Quality: 100%
    1280:720 (HDTV720P)
    Frame Rate 29.97
Turn on Frame Blending and Better Downscaling
    Turn off Interlace scaling
Everything else is as MPEG Streamclip defaults
The resulting file is stretched. I find it odd also that the original footage (as seen in MPEG Streamclip) seems narrow and tall. I'm in Australia (a PAL country?). Not sure if that has anything to do with things. I've seen the above work fine in a Final Cut Pro tutorial, but my video is stretched and jumpy.
Ultimately I'm trying to get it into Final Cut Express, but see the video as stretched at the MPEG Streamclip stage. If we can get that to work, then what easy set up codes (for a PAL country) do I use in FCE?
    Thanks!!

Thanks so much for the reply, Tom. I've only taken a few clips as tests at this point, so it's no worries to process one taken with the phone vertical (I can just delete it and try again). I've taken another test clip with the phone horizontal and exported to quicktime using the same settings:
    compression: AIC
    Frame Size: 1280x720 (HDTV 720p)
and the rest as I've said above...
The file still seems stretched, though not to the degree it was when I held the phone vertically. It may be that I've still got the wrong settings, or maybe it isn't, in fact, stretched. I can't tell for sure with the test footage. But either way, when I import it into FCE and drop it into the timeline, it drops frames immediately (I can't get through the ten second clip without it dropping frames four or five times).
I believe I've set the Easy Setup to match, but not sure:
AIC, 29.97, and HDV AIC 720p30
    My questions:
    1. If I did the quicktime export properly, would the clip come into FCE without needing render?
    2. When I saw the conversion done on a tutorial, they used MPEG Streamclip settings as 1280x720 (unscaled). Version 1.9.2 doesn't have that setting, so I was forced to use 1280x720 (HDTV720p). Is it possible this is my problem?
    3. Does the AIC codec require a faster hardware setup than my previous method of capturing from a SONY video camera? (I'm using an external drive, 200G).
    4. It's possible that though I'm using an external drive, that when I do an import of the quicktime clip from the desktop, it's sticking the raw file somewhere less efficient (like on my internal drive) than when I do a capture w/ scratch disks set to external drive?
Sorry for the basic questions, but I'm beside myself!! Anything you can point me to is greatly appreciated!!
    Jeff
This made me think I still had the wrong format when exporting into a quicktime clip. The tutorial I located that was doing exactly what I want used Streamclip to convert it to a 1280x720 (unscaled). My version of streamclip (1.9.2 as opposed to 1.9) doesn't have that option, so I've been forced to use 1280x729 HDTV s720. Is this the reason that the clip (when played in the sequence) keeps dropping frames? Or is it that any AIC codec has trouble w/ processing?

  • Log and capture or Log and transfer?

I'm a newbie to FCP, I've been working at it and researching, so I have a basic understanding, been able to do some good stuff, now I'm looking to find more time-economical ways to do things.  I'm a football coach, looking to cut up game films into individual plays (1 play per clip), and ideally being able to name each clip by it's play name "Trap" or "Pop Pass" for example.  It looks like I need to get into logging if possible.  My workflow at present when dealing with an opponent's film is to take a DVD, and get it onto my computer using MPEG Streamclip.  I've been using DVC-PAL as a codec at someone's suggestion, I can't rmemeber where I got that.  Is this a mistake?  Anyhow, I now import that movie file into FCP using File>Import.  At this point I can't do any logging though, if I try Log and Capture or Log and Transfer I get "Unable to initialize video deck", though it tells me I can still use Capture Now.  Once it opens the Log and Capture window, I get "Error: this operation requires a controllable deck."  and directs me to the Audio/Video Settings.  Here's where I'm pretty much lost.  Do I try to adjust settings from here?  If so, to what?  Do I need to start by changing my MPEG Streamclip settings and then trying to match those up in my FCP Audio/Video Settings?  Or do I need to completely overhaul the way I'm approaching this?  ARGH!  I've been impressed with myself getting to this point, any help from here would be greatly appreciated, thanks all!
          Grouch

Log and Capture is used if you are capturing footage from tape based formats.  DV, HDV, HDCAM...others.
Log and Transfer is for tapeless camera systems.  P2, XDCAM, Canon DSLR, AVCHD.
If your footage comes from DVDs...and you convert the footage to QT files...then you simply go to FILE>IMPORT.  You don't log with this method.  Just import and work with the footage.

  • DV-avi h.264 causes interlacing artifacts

For days now I've struggled with this problem. The dv-avi to h.264 convertions -always- have the following problem: Sideways motion looks very bad since there are very noticeable interlacing artifacts (i.e. combing effect). (Although if I use de-interlacing during the conversion the effect is different: in sideways motion the combing effect is not present but the vertical lines flicker.)
I have a Sony SD mini-dv camera DCR-HC42E PAL. The footage is in 16:9. I've captured the material using Adobe Premiere Elements 3 (APE). The camera is connected to pc via Fireware. To do the conversion I've tried many programs such as:
    - APE
    - MPEGStreamclip
    - QuickTime Pro
    - Videora
    - Nero
(Perhaps it is worth mentioning that Using APE and Nero I have not succeeded in producing a file that is playable at all in ATV. Maybe I just don't know the correct settings.)
The dv-avi file looks ok in Windows Media player. In QT pro there is already the combing effect even before the conversion.
The QT Pro (window > show movie properties) shows that the size of the dv-avi file is 768 x 576. Windows Media player (> file > properties) shows that the size is 720 x 576. Windows Media player also shows that the aspect ratio is "4:3 actual, 16:9 displayed".
    Í've tried
    - different output resolutions (unscaled, 1024 x 576)
    - different bitrates (1500 kbps, 3500 kbps)
    - with and without de-interlacing
    - field dominance lower and upper
    - multipass, b-frames
    - apple tv presets (QT pro, Videora)
If I just export the dv-avi to standard dvd, the result is good (no interlacing artifacts). But I'd like to use ATV to watch my mini-dv footage.
The media is synced in ATV. The ATV is connected to a Pioneer 436 XDE plasma (HDReady, panel resolution 1024 x 768) via HDMI.
I am beginning to think that either the Sony camera does not produce the right kind of dv-avi or it simply is not possible to have a decent dv-avi pal > h.264 conversion. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The dv-avi file looks ok in Windows Media player. In QT pro there is already the combing effect even before the conversion.
If you select show movie properties from the window menu in QT then select the video track and visual settings then checking/unchecking Single field/Deinterlace should show you an immediate effect, you can also opt to scale your video to 1024 x 576 here, you can then choose to save your changes. You may find the actual conversion to AVC is then better done in streamclip. I too have this interlacing issue when converting homw movies to AVC, being on a mac my workflow is to import and edit in imovie, export to full quality and convert in streamclip (actually I don't export to full quality, imovie creates a reference file as you edit which streacmlip can use to convert - I'm not sure which other programs do this though, so exporting or saving to full quality might be your only option).
    These are my streamclip settings
Are you sure you are suffering from interlacing and not field switching, the effects can seem similar.

  • Premiere Elements 11 Stops Working When Deinterlacing Footage

I recently began working with Premiere Elements 11 recreationally at home after working with Pro at work. I recorded 1080i footage running at 59.94 and wanted to deinterlace the footage to 1080p 29.97. However, when I try this, the program goes through about 2% of the footage before completely shutting down and Windows popping up saying it has stopped working and must be restarted. I've done this process multiple times with multiple files of 1080i footage. Any solutions to this problem?

    Phil_Pappadakes
Since we have been talking about .mp4 and .avi files, I am not sure how this might have entered the situation, but....are .wmv files involved in any way when you report
however, it constantly crops the image so only half the video is the original video, the bottom half being black.
If that is the case, please check the following announcement at the top of this forum. This all involves 1/2 wmv display related to a recent Windows Update kb.
Announcement: Windows Update Causes Half of Display to Be Blacked Out
    Hide Details
MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057.  Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files.  Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.
Also, see this Adobe KB Article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/wmv-files-corrupted-import-or.h tml
by Bill Hunt (Aug 2, 2013)
If the Windows Update kb is not the problem, I will post a screenshot of my MPEG Streamclip settings which were specific to "Export to MPEG-4.
We will be watching for your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • Preparing Premiere HDV MPEG files for FCP 5

I have three one hour MPEG video clips that were captured in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 using HDV settings (1440x1080i/60 16:9) that need to move to my colleague's mac. We no longer have the camera or tapes to recapture the footage directly to the mac, thus requiring us to use the HDV footage captured by Premiere.
FCP 5 didn't like the footage when directly imported (not a shock). We checked out Streamclip as a way to demux the files into separated video (M2V) and audio (AIFF), but that doesn't seem to be correct either as FCP wants to render all the footage on the timeline.
Looking for the correct solution without recompressing or altering the footage to the point that the HDV video isn't worth watching anymore. Apple Intermediate Codec seems like a necessary step in FCP, but we don't want to expend the hard drive resources (and compute time) without knowing if the streamclip settings are adequate for FCP's conversion.
    Any help is welcome!
    Spires Video

choose make quicktime movie and select apple intermediate codec move slider to best, size to 1440 x 1080 being that streamclip will see it at display size. set an in and out to do a short section to test. you don't want m2v for FCP. can't remember if FCP5 allows AIC or not
