Streaming QT files within Keynote

I need to show a Keynote presentation over the web, to about 40 people in various locations that have broadband internet. The issue is that the Keynote contains a bunch of QuickTime movies running at 15fps which need to 'stream' as smoothly as possible.
I've tried using WebEx and Adobe Connect, but both of them choke either on the Keynote slide transitions, or on the QuickTime movies themselves.
The embedded QTs are H264 and are already quite small (no more than about 2Mb). Would it help if I remade the Keynote to 640x480 resolution rather than 800x600 as it is at the moment? Should I remake the QTs as 'internet streaming' compatible? I'd like to use the Keynote file if at all possible rather than make a manually-advancing QuickTime of the whole thing.
Has anyone had any success with these "desktop sharing" web services with video, or can offer any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussions, oliver.
I'd say do all three with your preferred backup being the PPT presentation. There's really nothing out there that will do what Keynote does with a live presentation, but, since the message is key, if you NEED a backup, better to have a good workable PPT presentation than a QT movie (which may cause problems if none of their systems have QT installed) or a DVD with the limitation you stated.

Issues with embedding large HD video files within keynote

I posted something over at the FCP forum, but Keynote is starting to get problematic when I import and embed 1 to 2 GB HD video files that have background music.
1 time Keynote did a hard hang during a project save and lost 20 or so slides although the thumbnails were still showing.
Trying to save the project is starting to also become a real chore.
I am exporting 3-5 minute long HD video clips shot at 1080i and then deinterlaced in FCP.
HDV already reduces image sharpness it is. I want to keep the quality/footage sharpness up as high as possible. The selected video size ends up being about 1065 x 569, but that is a size, not a sharpness, one of the things I always found confusing when referring to it as "resolution".
So what settings would you suggest when outputting via FCP?
Any Keynote settings or workflows advised?

You could try uploading them to a joint dropbox account that they could then download them from....but how fast it is will depend on the internet connection available.

Accessing a File within a zip, which was archived using Applet Tag

Could Any one please tell me, How to Access a File from within an Applet. The File resides inside a zip which was Archived using <Applet> Tag.
Actually, I want to write an application which runs both online and offline. So I have chosen Applet and All the files Which I need are zipped and is Archived through <Applet ARCHIVE="example.zip">.
Now I want to access those XML files which are inside example.zip from my Applet.
How can I do that?
I think I will get security Exception.
How to get rid of this security Exception.

Did you already try signing a jarfile? If no ->>
You can call a class inside a jar-file within the applet.
if this class should be able to acces files the jarfile
first has to be signed. to do this, you must generate a key.
the complete work:
1. write your applet
2. write a html-page with following code:
<APPLET code="guestbook.class" archive="guestbook.jar" width=600 height=400></APPLET>
3. make a zip-file with the guestbook.class, guestbook.form, guestbook$1.class, guestbook$... and rename it to guestbook.jar
4. in the console type:
keytool -genkey -alias YOURNAME
5. sign the key to your jarfile with:
jarsigner guestbook.jar YOURNAME
6. try the applet. a warning should appear which you have to answer
with YES then it should work
my trouble is that i cant acces files anyway because right now i don�t
alreadv have the clue to get the right (absolute?) path for the file. means i get an ioexception because the applet cant find the file :-((

How to read/unzip a specific file within a zip file

Hi,
I have a file within a zip file that contains a timestamp - I want to read this timestamp and then create a destination directory for the remaining zip files to be unzipped into. Since I know the name of the file with the timestamp in it I thought I could create a zipfile and use getEntry to get the entry but then other than getting the size and name of the file I can't do much more with it like read it unless I use a stream (zipinputstream) instead of a file (zipfile) - do I have this right?
Does this mean to get the content I would have to loop through possibly all the files using the stream until I come across the one I want - then get the timestamp and loop through them all again to write them to the destination directory? Or am I reading this wrong - seems a bit round about.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

this works though - and you don't have to loop through all the files - just use the ZipFile:

How to unzip a zip file within another zip file

I've got code that successfully processes a file within a zip file.
But now the zip file can also contain other zip files. How can I
process a zip nested within a zip without actually extracting the
files? It looks like I need a ZipFile object to be able to take
advantage of the zip classes for reading zip entries. But the
ZipFile methods want as an argument an actual file, as opposed
to some object in memory. I can read the 'inner' zip file into a
ZipInputStream object, but then how do I make that available for
processing as a ZipFile? I've searched all over and cannot find
anything anywhere that talks about working with nested zip files.
Does anyone have any sample code that does this? Thanks!

I have successfully done it.
You cannot have the code - it is proprietary.
However here are a few pointers:
o Use ZipStreams rather than ZipFile.
o ZipStream is just a filter on a stream, so you can have a zipstream open, read a ZipEntry, then ask for a substream for the stuff up to the next ZipEntry. Put a second ZipStream on that substream.
o As I recall you have to watch out that your inner ZipStream does not do a close. (Everything will get closed.) Instead, there is another ZipStream method that will close without closing all the underlying streams.

Why are many of my files in Keynote, Pages and Numbers not opening?

Why are many files in Keynote, Pages and Numbers not opening? I have re-downloaded the apps but with no joy!

Strange. The photos that don't display in Aperture will still display in iPhoto but when I view the info the file doesn't show resolution information only for those problematic photos
Files sizes are almost all jpeg. Once I reference the file in iPhoto, the master displayed resolution for the photo within finder. The photo's original file also opened in preview and photoshop.

Importing PPT files into Keynote

Looks like VERY solid group here ... I am pleased to see how many questions are closed as 'answered' ... All of that being said, I've spent the past hour scanning topics and answers and have not found one that satisfies my realtively simple problem (or, at least I hope it is simple) ...
I purchased iWork06 over the weekend and installed it this morning ... I ran Software Update in my Apple menu and there appear to be no updates to the software ...
Upon attempting to import a PPT slide to Keynote (both by dragging the PPT file onto the Keynote icon and attempting to open the PPT file from within Keynote), Keynote crashes ... This has happened 5 times in the past 5 minutes ...
I'm sure there is likely a simple fix I am unaware of, but it escapes me at the moment ...

I'm not positive, but I think it may be a graphics issue ...
I decided to "cut and paste" the content of each ppt slide into a new Keynote file using the 'blank' master slide as a default ...
The original ppt file had 46 slides in total and took up 5mb ...
When I got to slide 40 and went to cut and paste, I got the spinning wheel of death - but was patient and let my machine do its magic - and ended up waiting about 5 or 6 minutes for the conversion to Keynote ... It looked like the chart in the slide may have had several hundred data points in it and the sheer mass of the metafile may have crashed the conversion ...
Other than that, cut and paste was seamless for all of the other slides which included similar graphics and charts, but none with quite so many data points ...
The only other thing I can think of is the fact that the ppt was on a templated master slide - it had my client's company logo in the bottom right hand corner of all of the slides ... Perhaps this ppt formatting caused the problems?
Regardless, I've gotten the think into Keynote and am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and learning to manipulate this seemingly impressive piece of software ... However, I am hoping to find a long term solution to importing that does not include cutting and pasting 46 slides ...
Any thoughts?

Streaming Movie DVDs within school network?

Hi All
Im looking to stream educational DVDs within my school, i now have a spare server but im not 100% sure what adobe flash product i need to do this?
As ive seen a few different options to buy but thinking will the Adobe Flash Media Streaming Server 3.5 be good enough?
Also the streamed files are they all via web page or can you use something like VLC player and connect to streamed files that way?
What would the address be for the site interally http://SERVERNAME/????? should it just bein IIS?

FMSS is a media server, and FMIS adds a scriped programming environment. Neither version accepts http or ftp uploads, and although it ships with a bundled version of Apache httpd server, it's really not meant to serve entire websites (you could... but it's really not intended for that). The purposes of FMS are:
1. Serving streaming video
2. Sharing real time actionscript data amongst connected clients (FMIS only)
3. Execution of actionscript code (FMIS only)
Typically, your HTTPD server (IIS) will serve an HTML page and flash client (.swf), and the Flash client makes the connection to FMS to consume the video. You can't use a typical VLC player, but if you wanted a desktop application instead of an HTML page, one could be developed by any good actionscript programmer.
As for serving multiple videos, you don't need a separate .swf or html page for each. You can pass variables to the .swf at runtime, and the .swf can be programmed to use those variables to determine which video to request. You can use an application server (php, asp, etc) or javascript to provide the variable data to the .swf. In the end, you have one page, and one .swf.
For publishing video to the site, you'll need to use either an application server or an FTP server (or if this is all done over a LAN, you can allow access to the network directory where you'll store your video files). The storage location for the videos needs to be either local to the FMS installation, or available to FMS via network path. In the case of the later, you'll need to configure a virtual directory within FMS (so FMS can find the video files)
As to whether you need FMS for your application... if all you need to do is serve video, you don't absolutely need FMS. Provided that your network (it sounds to me like this is all happening on the school's local network... correct me if I'm wrong) has enough speed, you could do this with just IIS and a Flash client without aversely affecting the UX. If you don't have concerns about rights management, access authorization, or shared data, FMS might be overkill for the task.

Can I embed *.dae file (collada file) inside keynote?

Is it possible to open/embed a collada (*.dae) file inside keynote? OR can I open Preview within Keynote while giving presentation?

1 As Keynote can't read COLLADA files, nothing will make Keynote open them.
2 Keynote is prevented from opening other applications.
My experience with presenting 3D mapping files is to display the 3D application and either play the render files or use the tools in the application to show the images.
Open both Keynote and the 3D application and swap back and forward between the two applications using Application Switcher (command tab)

Safari playing avi files within browser

So my question is this; How do you play avi video files within a safari web browser window?
Not an easy question. You could say imposible, probably. Would you say pointless, maybe. But wouldn't it open many posibilitys? Now I know I can stream avi files through vlc. It's ok, sometimes it works. But I think that loading videos into a browser would be perfect for me. For me, http is the fastest protocol I have availible. why? I'm running a ubuntu linux with smb and http. I use gnump3d to host my videos for myself.
Anyway, I know that avi files are just wrapped in avi, its not the codec. However if I can get the codec into safari, that would be cool. If I get one, the rest would follow.
So any help is appreciated as I have no idea what path to follow.

I don't know if you're aware of it, but as Donald has eluded to, VLC can handle video via http protocol, in addition to FTP, MMS and RTSP. It's not an in-browser solution, but using the stand-alone media player does have its perks. You definitely get more functionality than with a browser plugin.

Simple code help with streaming 1 file

I set up the Flash Media Server 2.0 on Windows (test box)
under the host dl35.tamu.edu (behind a firewall so I don't mind
giving it out)
Under the applications directory I create a directory called
test
Under this directory I place a flash movie called motion.flv
In this same directory I copy the main.asc that comes with
the Flash 8 software
I load the "test" application and use _definst_ as the
instance name
In Flash Professional 8 I create a new fla called test.fla
I embed a movie and use the ClearOverAll.swf as the skin for
the movie.
Under the Paramaters Tab I edit the content path to point to
rtmp:"//dl35.tamu.edu/test/_definst_/motion.flv
I test produce the html code and indeed the server shows a
connection even though nothing is playing.
Here is probably where I am most confused but I might have
done something wrong with the above as well. I am not a Flash
programmer, I am a network guy. All I want to do is the bare
minimum in the simplest form of streaming. I could not find code
samples that worked including the tutorial on the Adobe site (seems
to be fairly common). Digging through other examples I "believe" I
found what I wanted but apparantly I did not implement it correctly
or it is not what I need after all and I would like someone to
verify. The below is the action script that I found that I placed
within the test.fla. Is this wrong to do?

Goal: All I want to do is stream 1 file.. just 1. I have no

a few items in your message that I wanted to comment on. First, the
error messages you're coming up with may be the result of putting
the actionscript in the video object itself, rather than in the
timeline for the main SWF movie. What I think you may want to do is
put the actionscript in a layer called "Actions" in the main
timeline, select the keyframe for that layer in frame 1, and put
the actionscript in that keyframe. If you have put it in the video
object (or in some other object such as a button, etc.), you can
get errors of the type you are reporting (at least it has happened
to me). However, as noted below, you may not need that actionscript
at all.
Second, you may want to try placing a directory under the
"test" directory called "streams", putting another directory called
"_definst_" beneath the "streams" directory, and putting the FLV in
the _definst_ directory. This is where FMS is looking for the files
to stream, as I understand it. (It sounds from your description
like you have placed the FLV directly below "test".) Directly below
test *is* the right place for main.asc, as you have done.
IMPORTANT: In terms of the path you use in the contentPath variable
in the video player object, the path for the directory actually
holding the FLV should *still* be
rtmp://dl35.tamu.edu/test/_definst_/motion.flv, as you have done --
i.e., "streams" should not appear in the contentPath variable.
Don't ask me why, but this worked for me. The reason the server is
showing a connection is that you have put a "test" directory in the
right place, and thus have registered the application from the
point of view of FMS, but you have not put the FLV in the right
place, and so FMS can't find the FLV file in the path you've
specified.
Third, are you using the FLVPlayback component in the swf
file? (From the fact that you're using one of the canned Flash
skins, it sounds like that's the case.) If so, and if you're just
streaming one movie, you don't need to worry about the code to open
up a new net connection, new netstream, etc. -- all of that is
embedded in the FLVPlayback object. So all you need to do is put in
the RTMP path to the file --
rtmp://dl35.tamu.edu/test/_definst_/motion.flv -- in the
contentPath variable for the FLVPlayback object; you do not need
the code opening the NetConnection and NetStream objects.
I hope this is useful. As noted, I am fairly new to this
myself, but I have been able to stream files successfully using
FMS, FLV, and Flash.

Batch code for running a find/replace all on multiple files within a source floder/directory

What I need is a Batch source code that will open all files in a folder/directory and run a find and replace_all query within them and then save all the files. The files were created in Illustrator and saved using the Scene7 FXG format extension.    These files will be uploaded into Scene7 as a group after the find and replace macro/query is run on the code. The same find and replace query will be the same for all the files. Basically this function or batch process will save time in setting the same parameters all at one time instead of having to set the parameters individually in scene7.

I have no problems creating batch files within Ai and PhotoShop but I have limited programming skills in how to create source code for manuipulating documents outside of those apps or in a OS invironment.
I could probably come up witha simple program to do what i want for one document but i get lost when dealing with multiple documents in a source folder (prolbem is, I will be dealing with thousands of documents not 100 or less)
If anything which Adope cloud app would work best: Dreamweaver or Edge code   (or just use my notepad)

Just moved to Mac from Windows, so far biggest headache is the way folders are treated. I manage several very large websites and involve a lot of files within folders and I need the folders to show the date the last file inside it was changed?

In my FTP client I can click to sort by date modified which is fine if you are in a folder and then it shows the file dates correctly - but any folders within the root folder don't they seem to display randomly all together at the bottom of the list and it is a nightmare trying to find what folders have files in them that have been changed.
Is there any way to get the folder to register the last date of a file within it that was modified?

I dont know the answer yet, but i have noted what appears to be a bug in 10.9 in how it handles folder dates. Right now i am seeing folder modified dates changing randomly ot "today" - whatever date the parent folder was opened.
In the past my folders "modified" date was always the same as the last modified date of the items within. But this only moved down ONE level - if a subfolder's entries were updated the "gradfather" folder did not update.
But now severa people are reporting random, incorrect folder dates. I hoep this will be corrected soon, but who knows?

Can't open powerpoint files in keynote since Mountain Lion upgrade

Not having much luck and not sure which forum to post in as this could be a Mountain Lion issue, an iWork issue, but is also an iWork and/or IOS6 issue!
Until last week I had Lion on iMac and IOS5 on iPad. I was able to log on to my work network server (school network, I am a teacher) and open powerpoint, word or excel files in keynote, pages or numbers on my iPad. I then upgraded to IOS6 and now none of the files will open up on my iPad. I get the open in screen when I choose a file to open, then nothing happens.
In the meantime, I upgraded my iMac from Lion to Mountain Lion. Since I was having problems accessing my work files and viewing them on my iPad, I decided to buy Keynote on my iMac in the hope that I could get on with some work on iMac rather than iPad. I logged on to my school server and tried to open a powerpoint file and for some reason it downloads it as a pptx.exe and if I try to open it I get an error message saying "You can't open the application xxx.pptx.exe because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OSX". It shouldn't be a .exe file it should just be a powerpoint file! When I open Keynote and look for available files on my iMac, the file I just downloaded is greyed out.
Hmmmmm so I have an iMac, an iPad, two versions of the Keynote app (plus numbers and pages on the ipad) and can't open any of my files from my school network. That seems a lot of money in one pot Apple and something has changed from Lion to Mountain Lion, and from IOS5 to IOS6 which is preventing me from doing my work. IOS5 allowed me to open any ppt, xls, doc, pptx, xlsx, docx file from my school network so why since upgrading to IOS6 can I suddenly not open them??
Now having forked out for Keynote on my iMac, I have the same problem.
I am able to open attachments in emails and I am able to log on to the school VLE and access and open files. So it is just something to do with opening from the normal file system that I can't do.
I posted in the iPad and iWork forum and had no replies. However, Apple iWork team have contacted me after reading my post re the iPad issue of opening files from my network. I've provided info to them and am waiting for a response, but in the meantime I have now discovered there is also an issue on my iMac. Hopefully they will read this too or someone else will perhaps know what is going on.
It is a worry that I can't do any work using my Apple products seeing as I have bought them! I have had to go back to bringing my windows laptop home everyday which I hope is a short term solution. I have loved the fact that I could access everything on my school network from my iPad in the past and not have to drag a laptop around. I am also worried that this means pupils can't access the files too if they are using Macs, iphones, ipads etc and have upgraded to Mountain Lion or IOS6.

Thanks for the response but I think you've misunderstood the problem. I can not open any type of PowerPoint file off my server in keynote. This includes .ppt and .pptx files. (Also includes .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx in pages and numbers).
Even if what you said worked it would take forever to go through every file and save them all as ppt 2007. Plus of course, I don't know what files I will need when. There are hundreds of resources I need to access when I'm at home. I need the flexibility to view the files when i need to and on the go. Normally I can download them off my school network on to my iPad in keynote and edit them then I email them back to myself ready to use the next day or to save back to my network. Currently I can not download any Microsoft office file. So I am now forced to have to lug my laptop home everyday, rendering my iPad and iMac useless. I can't pre-empt what I'll need and save it as .ppt as that is completely inflexible and that won't open anyways as this is not an issue with the version of PowerPoint file. This is an issue with how all Microsoft files are downloading from my school network to my iPad and iMac. I want Apple to allow this to work like it used to before the upgrades in operating systems. I wish I hadn't upgraded as it worked perfectly. :(
