Stretching 4:3 clip to 16:9

Hi, I am looking into getting a video capture device (for the purposes of capturing footage off of my video game consoles). I am posed with a problem though. The best one that I can find only records 4:3, even though it has a component video input at 16:9. This almost breaks the deal for me. So, I would like to know if it is possible in iMovie '09 to stretch a 4:3 clip to 16:9.

Appleman I really need your help.
I recorded a fitness video for a friend that needs to be turned in as a test to be a fitness instructor. I used a Panasonic GS400 mini cassette video camera. The video needs to be in a dvd format. I thought I recorded it with an aspect ratio of 4:3. However, when I imported it into iMovie it apparently imported as 16:9. In the clip window it looks like it. Bar on the top and bottom and stretched very wide, very heavy set. And in the project window and on my first dvd try it looked the same -- stretched WIDE. (Actually, it was so funny we had tears in our eyes and were doubled over while watching it. Needless to say, a fitness instructor may not pass the test if she looks like she is 300 pounds!) I should mention I don't care about the bars or the black boxes around the video.
What am I doing wrong? And can you give me some advice to fix it?
I'm working with a 70 minute video and iMac 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with OSX and iMovie 09, version 8.0.5.
Thanks in advance. I really appreciate any help you can provide.

  • How do i avoid stretching 4:3 clips in widescreen

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get some pesky 4:3 clips from a dvd to NOT stretch out to 16:9 in my 1080i movie project (most footage in 16:9, HD). I've tried every possible combination in preferences, to no avail. How does one FORCE pillarboxing on a clip so as to avoid the stretch?

Have you tried UNchecking 'automatic letterboxing' in Preferences?

  • Motion keyframe effect stretch to new clip duration

Sorry for the lame subject title, but I'm not sure I know how to be more descriptive, or search for previously posted info about this.
I have 98 still images on a timeline to which I want to apply a "zoom in" motion effect, and add a 2 sec dissolve transition between each. Is there a way to apply the "zoom in" effect without the dissolve in between, and then, when I add the dissolve, have the motion effect stretch out to affect the new clip duration? As everyone here will know, the transition adds time on to both ends of the clip with the previously applied motion keyframes staying put. Obviously, the effect I get is a dissolve happens, the clip then zooms up, stops, and then the next dissolve occurs.
Sorry to over-explain something so simple. Just looking for, hopefully, an overlooked shortcut.

But in your method Alex, the transitions are adding frames at the beginnings of clips which means the new clip will dissolve completely in before moving. I'm sure that's not what the OP is looking for.
The easiest method for this is actually a variation on Arsenal's first post.
Apply a transition between the first and second pics in your timeline.
Then keyframe your move on the first pic so you are seeing all the available frames (including the ones used in the transition). If it's a simple zoom move for instance, mark a keyframe at the first frame of the clip, and then on the last frame adjusting the scale to taste.
Apply transitions to all clips in the sequence. If using the same transition this can be done easily by lassoing all clips in the timeline and dragging them into the Canvas, choosing overwrite with transition to apply the default transition to every clip. In FCP 7, this has been made even easier.
Once you have transitions on all your clips, copy the properties of the first pic (CMD+C).
Select all the other clips in the sequence. Hit OPT+C to bring up the Paste Attributes dialog box. choose Basic Motion and make sure that Scale attribute times is selected. Hit OK.
The same move from the first pic will be stretched or shrunk to fit the length of each clip in the sequence and FCP takes the transitional frames into consideration as well.

  • Time stretch has stopped working in Premiere Elements 13.

I've downloaded the latest Adobe updates. I am using a Windows 8 64 bit computer. I have previously (in the last few weeks) used time stretch to speed up and slow down without any problems but now I can't get it to work in any of my projects. All video files shot with an iPod Touch or iPhone. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

    Chris
As a point of reference for your Premiere Elements 13 question, I have a iPod Touch 4th generation (H.264.mov 1280 x 720 @ 24 progressive frames per second), and I have no problems using Time Stretch or Time Remapping in a 13/13.1 project or other versions.
I would invoke the interference of a possible variable frame rate rather than a constant one involved with your particular type of video (from iPod or iPhone) and Time Stretch, but I am not having any problem with my iPod Touch video (with minimal variable frame rate) and Time Stretch in Premiere Elements. If you want to explore that idea further, you could convert your video's variable frame into a constant one using the free HandBrake program. Then import HandBrake's  H.264.mp4 export into your Premiere Elements 13/13.1 project and determine if you can then apply Time Stretch to that clip.
Have you applied the Shake Stabilizer to your clip before trying to apply the Time Stretch? For that matter, what effects, if any, have you applied to your video clip before trying to apply Time Stretch to it?
All of the above is based on Time Stretch no working for you in a new project with new source media.

  • Music clip help needed

I am working in Premiere 11 and would like to add a music clip to my timeline. The music in the drag and drop box is 30 seconds long. How do I get a longer clip or can I stretch the clip on the timeline as in Premiere 12? I am just learning the program. I need help fast! Thanks.

    CacheBRC
lf you stretch the audio clip with Time Stretch beyond its recorded time, it will distort progressively as you drag the file out.
Where is this music clip coming from? If it is one of the SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 soundtracks, you can customize the duration in the SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 workspace so that is does not impact the music arrangement when music file is opened in the Timeline from the SmartSound/Sonicfire Pro 5 workspace.
The SmartSound feature can be found under the Music Tab at the bottom of the Premiere Elements 12 workspace. What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
Let us start here and then decide what next. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have questions or need clarification on anything written.
    Thanks.

  • Gradual Time Stretch - Is it Possible???

I'm using logic to mix together a heap of songs. Naturally they all have different tempos.
I'm using the quick and dirty time stretch method (option+drag) on the audio clips. I'm wondering, is it possible to automate some how a gradual time stretch, so the clip starts slower then speeds up?
I guess I'm trying to emulate the changing speed capabilities of a pair of turntables in Logic.

This may not be totally what you're looking for, but check out a little free AU called Turntablist. You can find it here: http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/audiounits.html
You load it up in an instrument track, then load an aiff straight into the AU, and you can speed up, slow down, scratch, etc, and it sounds really nice.
If you really want an app with a lot of flexibility to manipulate files and tempo, pitch, etc on the fly, check out Live. It's much more suited to that stuff.
    Good Luck!

  • Change duration of multiple clips "as one" overall clip?

    Here's my situation:
I have a song at 127 BPM. I have a music video (muted sound) at 125 BPM.
I've spent a long time slicing up clips from the video into different channels and muliple clips to form one timeline (but with many clips and channels lined up).
I now want to change the overall duration of the video clip to match the BPM of the song (which I should have done in the first place), but the video is, as previously stated, sliced up in mulitple clips in multiple channels. How can I change the duration of all clips at one time, where the end and start of the clips still line up to eachother?
This would've been incredibly easy if there were a un-nesting feature. Where I can nest multiple clips, change the duration, and un-nest the clips to slices clips with a changed overall duration. (Which is not possible. Yes, I can drag the clips out of the nested clip, but the clips will still have the original duration).
TL;DR: How can I change duration of multiple clips "as one" overall clip?

Never mind. I've found a alternate solution. I used a time stretch calculator at http://mp3.deepsound.net/eng/samples_calculs.php and time stretched all the clips to match the BPM of the song. Now I only need to snap all the clips, which can be done one by one, but I found this trick to snap all the clips at once: http://vimeo.com/27428526.
I'll just let this thread stay open so other with the same problem can find this

  • Unable to expand movie clip inside of scroll

I inherited a .fla file with a scrolling thumbnail image
movie clip that moves horizontally inside of a "scroll" behind a
mask, with the use of right and left buttons. < > The
thumbnail movie clip is much wider than the movie's dimensions. I
think it was made in Flash 5. I added about 30 new thumbnails to
the movie clip for my client, but now it won't expand anymore.
Before, all I had to do was put the thumbnail into the edge of the
clip and it would expand to include it. I can get the invisible
right and left "scroll" movie clips to scroll even beyond the movie
clip by adjusting the numbers in the ActionScript for those two
instances. I am not a "programmer type" so this probably is hard to
understand. If I try to change the width of the movie clip in the
properties box it comes up with an "invalid size and position"
error. Actually I think all it would do is stretch-distort the clip
anyway, which is not what I want. (if I put in a lesser number it
squishes the clip). I just want more space right and left.
    Any ideas?

  • Adding Clip art and text

I am fine tuning my Premeire Elements Video and adding music, text and some clip art. I am using Premiere 8. When I add clip art and text it goes in fine but when I do a preview playback the text and or the clip art fanishes before the end of the clip. I have put in "time stretch" for the clip, is there any way to also lengthen the clip art and the text? I have looked and read but am not finding the answer. Thanks

  • Warp Stabilizer and Speed can't be used on same clip

...just my luck that on my first ever Premiere project (CS6) I'm building a timeline and need to use both the Rate Stretch Tool and the Warp Stabilizer on multiple clips. The message, "Warp Stabilizer and Speed can't be used on same clip" took me by surprise.
However, after research here on the Forum, I found a Workaround that I'm deploying:
"Apply the effects, nest and finally apply warp stabilize" Ann Bens
    Here's what I did:
In my only sequence -- Sequence 01 -- I highlighted a clip that I had already applied Rate Stretch to.
    chose Clip/Nest
This created a Nested Sequence 02 with the clip in it.
In Sequence 01, the clip now says, "Nested Sequence 02"
I applied the Warp Stabilizer to the Nested Sequence 02 clip and it worked. Both Rate Stretch and Warp Stabilizer have been applied to the same clip!
So I've done this like ten times to ten clips and now have 10 Nested Sequence folders.
    Questions:
    Are my step-by-steps correct?
Do I let these multiple Nested Sequences just keep piling up? (when I right click on a Nested Sequence and choose Clear, I get a warning message that I'm going to delete clip references)
Now that the workaround has worked, is there a way to close -- unlink -- from these Nested Sequence folders? If so how?
I am so Over My Head for a first project. I thought you could always compound Video Effects!
    NotOnSugarMountain

Best is to make a copy of the timeline or clips that you are going to multiple nest etc.
If you screw up you can easily replace nested clips etc with a copy from the copy you made.
There is an undo function but most of the time its not enough.

  • How do I adjust the tempo or BPM of a sample to match the song I'm working on?

Hi, the title pretty much says it all.
I am working on a tune in audition CS6, however I am aware that audition is not intended for music production, but I already have the beat, bass line and melody laid down in a multi-track session, now I have download a few audio samples and acapellas that I want to use on my tune but do not know how to go about matching the tempo so that my audio sample fits like a glove over my original tune.
    Please help.

There are two things you need to know, really. The first is that when you import a clip into multitrack view, by default stretching is off. But if you grab the little triangle at either the top left or top right of a clip, you can stretch it anyway - this turns stretching for the clip on automatically. To get things right initially, you need to position the clip at the correct start point, and stretch or shrink the end point so that it finishes where you want it to. The second thing is that the 'slip' tool is sometimes useful here as well. This leaves your clip window exactly where it is, and lets you slide the clip around within it, so you can, if you want, 'push' the beat with your clip - or of course the complete opposite.
By default, clip stretching is in real time, but the chances are that when you've got it in the right place you'll want to improve the quality. So  you right-click on your clip, select the stretching options and set it to render it, rather than run in real-time mode. This takes longer, but sounds miles better.
Once you get used to it, these operations are pretty easy to carry out.

  • Bug in Premiere Elements 13?

I am using Premiere Elements as a trial version and actually want to buy it. But this problem now makes me quite reluctant: when I delete the audio of a clip, or import a clip into a video track, elements on other tracks get shifted, cut and sometimes even deleted. And when I change the speed of a single clip, then the clips on the same track also get shifted in the time line. Is it a bug or can I adjust some settings against these issues? I will be thankful for any ideas and suggestions.
    Best
    Sebastian

    sebastian
I have been working on your workflow with the issues resulting from altering an existing Timeline content.
For a Premiere Elements 13/13.1 project, I structured the Timeline tracks as you showed in your screenshots from tracks 1 through 4 and could not get any of the clips above or below track 3 to move or be cut by insert of my clip comparable to your 00024.mts. Before the 00024.mts insert on track 3, when I was building the Timeline, I ran into a problem where, after completing the build of video track 4, I noticed that my first 3 clips on 4 had video and audio (linked) where you showed only video. When I went to delete the audio from these files, I got a shift in the track 4  content. I discovered that, when I unlinked the audio from the video, I could delete the audio leaving the video and no shifts in the Timeline content.
When considering slow motion effects for an already placed clip, to avoid disturbances to existing Timeline, do not use Time Stretch. Instead drag the clip out using the mouse cursor, provided that the extended clip does not bump into the next clip on that Timeline. You might also think about applying Time Stretch to a clip in an isolated part of the Timeline and then moving the Time Stretched clip into place in the existing Timeline.
As for Freeze Frames...I would advise you to use Tools/Freeze Frames and the option for Export where you save the freeze frame as .bmp to the hard drive. Then, from the computer hard drive, import the freeze frame into the project (Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag it to the Timeline position with or without a keyboard modifier Alt or Ctrl). You could also consider using Publish+Share/Computer/Image to export your freeze frame as jpeg.
Just put your Timeline Indicator on the frame that you want and go to Publish+Share. Then import that exported freeze frame back into the project (Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag the freeze frame into place on the Timeline track, with or without the keyboard modifier).
When necessary, selection or grouping of Timeline clips before moving existing Timeline components can be indicated in these considerations.
These workflow considerations are not unique to Premiere Elements 13/13.1.
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • How can I adjust video from two cameras that are out of sync?

Hi - I've just recorded someone speaking on two cameras with the intention of cutting clips in from the second camera while using the video and soundtrack from the main camera, however the two video files are out of sync by half a second or so by the end. How can I 'stretch' the shorter clip so they coincide properly? Thanks, David.

    David
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    Typically, select the clip,
as you hold down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once. Each tap = 1 frame nudge.
as you hold down the Shift+Alt keys of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once. Each tap = 5 frames nudge.
If you are working with audio editing, consider Edit Menu/Project Settings/General with Audio Display Format = Milliseconds.
Please let us know if any of the above worked for you.
    Thank you.

  • Pixel aspect and downrez to NTSC problem

Okay, I seem to have a complicated problem...
    1. I have footage that was shot mostly at 1080p30 on an HVX200 (there is also some 720p60 here and there)
    2. I am making an NTSC version, pan and scan, not letterbox, and have my sequence settings set using the standard DV NTSC preset.
    3. I am also making a PAL version, also pan and scan, sequence settings are standard DV PAL preset.
    4. I then export through Compressor:
NTSC Settings- Quicktime movie, photo-JPEG, full quality, proportions- 720x480, pix aspect ratio- NTSC CCIR601
PAL Settings- Quicktime movie, photo-JPEG, full quality, proportions- 720x576, pix aspect ratio- PAL CCIR601
Here's the problem- the final results are coming out wrong. NTSC clips look stretched wide, PAL clips look squished skinny. In QT, the aspect ratios both show some kind of "widescreen" effect. The NTSC shows the aspect as being "720x480 (640x480)" and PAL shows "720x576 (768x576)"
I know this won't be accepted for my final requirements. I need the aspects to simply be 720x480 and 720x576 without those dang parenthesis. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

    flyingosockman wrote:
What I need are essentially NTSC and PAL DV files that are compressed with PhotoJPEG. I didn't know that the square pixels was part of the compressor, however, that's very interesting.
Basically my requirements are photoJPEG, 720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 for PAL.
That's like asking for soda, but without the carbonation.
Jokes aside, sometimes that is what you have to deliver.
To get back to your original issue, what you're seeing (the figures in parentheses, such as 640x480 for NTSC-DV) are the results of QuickTime's Conform Aperture property which interprets non-square pixels as square pixels for QT playback. If your movie were actually NTSC-DV (and not PhotoJPEG), it would look correct in QT Player.
I suspect whoever you're delivering to has ways to correct for the distortion that you're seeing in QT Player when they'll be outputting (to tape? to MPEG-2 stream?).
In other words, if those are the specs you've been given - 720x480 PhotoJPEG for NTSC, for instance - your outputs and workflow are correct.

  • Can't change still length

When I import stills into my movie, I can change the length by putting the cursor at either end. I get a bar with arrows on either side. I can't get the bar with just one arrow on it. That's not my real question. My main problem is later on I'm trying to change the length of the still and it won't let me. I even double click on it and the information box where it has the length, it can't be changed. It just tells you how long the clip is, no text box to change it.

The direct trimming cursors behave differently on unrendered vs. rendered stills. Unrendered stills are not video clips, while rendered stills are video clips.
If the photo was rendered by Ken Burns as it was imported -- which occurs if the Ken Burns checkbox is ON -- it has one-sided arrows, at least initially, for it cannot be made longer. (It's impossible to stretch a video clip longer.) Once you make it shorter, it shows two-sided arrows for now it can be dragged longer, back to its original length.
If the still was NOT rendered by Ken Burns -- the KB checkbox was OFF -- it always displays two-sided arrows, for its duration can always be changed both shorter and longer.
By the same token, the dialog window that opens when you double-click on the clip does not allow you to change the duration of a video clip, while it DOES let you change the duration of an unrendered image.
