String Array greater 999

Hi all I was just wondering if there was a way to create an array that can hold more than 999 items. When I create an array for instance with the dimensions [1000] it returns and out of range error. Any help would be great Thanks.

When I create an array for instance with the dimensions [1000] it returns and out of range error.No, it doesn't. That sounds more as if you've created an array with size 1000 and try to assign something to the 1001st element (i.e. the element at index 1000).
Show us the code that gives the exception.

  • Problems with string arrays

    Previous task was:
    Write a class "QuestionAnalyser" which has a method "turnAnswerToScore". This method takes a String parameter and returns an int. The int returned depends upon the parameter:
    parameter score
    "A" 1
    "B" 2
    "C" 3
    other 0
    Alright, here's the recent task:
    Write another method "turnAnswersToScore". This method takes an array of Strings as a parameter, works out the numerical score for each array entry, and adds the scores up, returning the total.
    That's my code:
    class QuestionAnalyser{
    public static int Score;
    public String[] Answer;
    public static void main(String[] args) {}
         public int turnAnswerToScore(String[] Answer)
    for (int i = 0; i < Answer.length;i++) {
    if (Answer.equals("A")) {
    Score = Score + 1; }
    else if (Answer[i].equals("B")) {
    Score = Score + 2;}
    else if (Answer[i].equals("C")) {
    Score = Score + 3;}
    else {
    Score = Score + 0;}
    return Score;
    this is the error message I get:

  • Getting lenght of String array

    Hi,
    How can i find the lenght of a string array, i have used length method to calculate length of single string value,e.g
    String value = "test"
    int length = value.length()
    Now i want to calculate length of a string array.e.g
    String csv_values = "test,by,random"
    String[] str = csv_values.split(",")
    int lenght = str.length()
    As you can see i want to calculate total number of entries in an array after i split it dynamically.
    Currently it is giving me exception, "Unable to parse exception; Undefined method: length for class: [Ljava.lang.String]"
    Thanks

    This is a tricky one.  An Array has a length property, unlike a String which has a length method.
    So...
    int length = str.length

  • Newbie trying to sort 2D string array

    Dear all,
    After read some book chapters, web sites including this, I still don't get the point.
    If I have a file like,
    1 aaa 213 0.9
    3 cbb 514 0.1
    2 abc 219 1.3
    9 bbc 417 10.4
    8 dee 887 2.1
    9 bba 111 7.1
    and I load into memory as a String[][]
    here comes the problem, I sort by column 1 (aaa,...,bba) using an adaptation of the Quicksort algorithm for 2D arrays
    * Sort for a 2D String array
    * @param a an String 2D array
    * @param column column to be sort
    public static void sort(String[][] a, int column) throws Exception {
    QuickSort(a, 0, a.length - 1, column);
    /** Sort elements using QuickSort algorithm
    static void QuickSort(String[][] a, int lo0, int hi0, int column) throws Exception {
    int lo = lo0;
    int hi = hi0;
    int mid;
    String mitad;
    if ( hi0 > lo0) {
    /* Arbitrarily establishing partition element as the midpoint of
    * the array.
    mid = ( lo0 + hi0 ) / 2 ;
    mitad = a[mid][column];
    // loop through the array until indices cross
    while( lo <= hi ) {
    /* find the first element that is greater than or equal to
    * the partition element starting from the left Index.
    while( ( lo < hi0 ) && ( a[lo][column].compareTo(mitad)<0))

    * the partition element starting from the right Index.
    while( ( hi > lo0 ) && ( a[hi][column].compareTo(mitad)>0))
    --hi;
    // if the indexes have not crossed, swap
    if( lo <= hi )
    swap(a, lo, hi);
    ++lo;
    --hi;
    /* If the right index has not reached the left side of array
    * must now sort the left partition.
    if( lo0 < hi )
    QuickSort( a, lo0, hi, column );
    /* If the left index has not reached the right side of array
    * must now sort the right partition.
    if( lo < hi0 )

    MyMatrix.sort(a,1);
    MyMatrix.printf(a);
    System.out.println("");
    MyMatrix.sort(a,3);
    MyMatrix.printf(a);
    for the first sorting I get
    1 aaa 213 0.9
    2 abc 219 1.3
    9 bba 111 7.1
    9 bbc 417 10.4
    3 cbb 514 0.1
    8 dee 887 2.1
    (lexicographic)
    but for the second one (column 3) I get
    3 cbb 514 0.1
    1 aaa 213 0.9
    2 abc 219 1.3
    9 bbc 417 10.4
    8 dee 887 2.1
    9 bba 111 7.1
    this is not the order I want to apply to this sorting, I would like to create my own one. but or I can't or I don't know how to use a comparator on this case.
    I don't know if I am rediscovering the wheel with my (Sort String[][], but I think that has be an easy way to sort arrays of arrays better than this one.
    I've been trying to understand the Question of the week 106 (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/qow/archive/106/) that sounds similar, and perfect for my case. But I don't know how to pass my arrays values to the class Fred().
    Any help will be deeply appreciated
    Thanks for your help and your attention

    public class StringArrayComparator implements Comparator {
      int sortColumn = 0;
      public int setSortColumn(c) { sortColumn = c; }
      public int compareTo(Object o1, Object o2) {
        if (o1 == null && o2 == null)
          return 0;
        if (o1 == null)
          return -1;
        if (o2 == null)
          return 1;
        String[] s1 = (String[])o1;
        String[] s2 = (String[])o2;
        // I assume the elements at position sortColumn is
        // not null nor out of bounds.
        return s1[sortColumn].compareTo(s2[sortColumn]);
    // Then you can use this to sort the 2D array:
    Comparator comparator = new StringArrayComparator();
    comparator.setSortColumn(0); // sort by first column
    String[][] array = ...
    Arrays.sort(array, comparator);I haven't tested the code, so there might be some compiler errors, or an error in the logic.

  • Help! Inserting a 1-D comment array into a 2-D string array at specified row AND column

    Hello everyone,
    I am writing a 2-D string array to excel and i need a way to add comments to my file like this:
    SLAM    NAME    G Level    Comments
    1              RALF         26
    1              RALF         26
    1              RALF         26
    1              RALF         26
    For some reason, i cannot specify a row AND column to write because:
    When i use replace array subset it only replaces 1 element at my index.
    When i use replace array subset with a loop, it creates empty spaces until it reaches the end of the array it is replacing.
    When i use Insert into array: i cannot wire 2 inputs for row and column.
    In my complete VI i will need to write from row 1-1001, a different comment from 2-2002, a different comment from 3-3003, etc until a stop condition is met so i need to figure out how to do this programatically and not have it replace any elements outside of the range or it will override previous commetns.
    I am at a loss of what to do. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    @Usamakhan1990,
    Use usercontrol with label and checkbox is reasonable for a datagrid control if you don't want to have too much code for those radio buttons. So I agree with andy here with that usercontrol.
    So is it required that your radiobutton should be outside the datagrid?
    Anyway, I think you already know that you can bind data to columns yourself. So please check the following thread:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22922533/how-do-i-automagically-bind-a-string-array-to-a-wpf-datagrid
    <DataGrid Name="_dataGrid" Grid.Row="0" AutoGenerateColumns="False">
    <DataGrid.Columns>
    <DataGridTextColumn Header="Column 1" Binding="{Binding [0]}"/>
    <DataGridTextColumn Header="Column 2" Binding="{Binding [1]}"/>
    </DataGrid.Columns>
    </DataGrid>
    Or define the columns from code, in case you have dynamic number of columns, for example :
    string[][] array = fs.CSVToStringArray();
    for (int i = 0; i < array[0].Length; i++)
    var col = new DataGridTextColumn();
    col.Header = "Column " + i;
    col.Binding = new Binding(string.Format("[{0}]", i));
    _dataGrid.Columns.Add(col);
    this.ExternalData._dataGrid.ItemsSource = array;
    And for Radio button part, please see here:

  • .csv to a string array

    Hi,
    This is probably a simple problem, but I have a csv file with string values in one column and numbers in another.  For example:
    Volume,    6
    Diameter,  5
    But much larger of a file.
    I would like to be able to read the first column in and come up with an array of just the strings.  I have tried using the Read Text from file into the Spreadsheet string to Array into the Index Array functions, but I cannot seem to get this string array to work out, as it just comes up with 0's for any text.
    If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You!!

  • Concatenation of String array.

    Hello,
    I have two string array.
    String[] szTemp1={"abc", "d e f "};
    String[] szTemp2={"123", "4-5 6"};
    How can I make a concatenation to get an array with {"123", "4-5 6", "abc", "d e f"} !
    I tried String[] szTemp2={"123", "4-5 6"} + szTemp1; but this is not working!
    Thanks in advance.
    Alain.

    From the Java API, check:
    System.arraycopy(Object src, int srcPos, Object dest, int destPos, int length)
    Copies an array from the specified source array, beginning at the specified position, to the specified position of the destination array. A subsequence of array components are copied from the source array referenced by src to the destination array referenced by dest. The number of components copied is equal to the length argument. The components at positions srcPos through srcPos+length-1 in the source array are copied into positions destPos through destPos+length-1, respectively, of the destination array.
    If the src and dest arguments refer to the same array object, then the copying is performed as if the components at positions srcPos through srcPos+length-1 were first copied to a temporary array with length components and then the contents of the temporary array were copied into positions destPos through destPos+length-1 of the destination array.
    If dest is null, then a NullPointerException is thrown.
    If src is null, then a NullPointerException is thrown and the destination array is not modified.
    Otherwise, if any of the following is true, an ArrayStoreException is thrown and the destination is not modified:
    The src argument refers to an object that is not an array.
    The dest argument refers to an object that is not an array.
    The src argument and dest argument refer to arrays whose component types are different primitive types.
    The src argument refers to an array with a primitive component type and the dest argument refers to an array with a reference component type.
    The src argument refers to an array with a reference component type and the dest argument refers to an array with a primitive component type.
    Otherwise, if any of the following is true, an IndexOutOfBoundsException is thrown and the destination is not modified:
    The srcPos argument is negative.
    The destPos argument is negative.
    The length argument is negative.
    srcPos+length is greater than src.length, the length of the source array.
    destPos+length is greater than dest.length, the length of the destination array.
    Otherwise, if any actual component of the source array from position srcPos through srcPos+length-1 cannot be converted to the component type of the destination array by assignment conversion, an ArrayStoreException is thrown. In this case, let k be the smallest nonnegative integer less than length such that src[srcPos+k] cannot be converted to the component type of the destination array; when the exception is thrown, source array components from positions srcPos through srcPos+k-1 will already have been copied to destination array positions destPos through destPos+k-1 and no other positions of the destination array will have been modified. (Because of the restrictions already itemized, this paragraph effectively applies only to the situation where both arrays have component types that are reference types.)
    Parameters:
    src - the source array.
    srcPos - starting position in the source array.
    dest - the destination array.
    destPos - starting position in the destination data.
    length - the number of array elements to be copied.
    Throws:
    IndexOutOfBoundsException - if copying would cause access of data outside array bounds.
    ArrayStoreException - if an element in the src array could not be stored into the dest array because of a type mismatch.
    NullPointerException - if either src or dest is null.

  • How do I write the contents of a string array to file?  Is there a package

    freely avaliable to do this? I am writing a console program that will save the selections made to file. I have convenience packages that came with my book, it allows int and double arrays to be written to file, but not string arrays. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    One easy way to do this is to populate a Properties object with the index as the key and the element as the value.
    The properties has built in methods for writing it to file and reading it in.

         {"FFFFFF", "White"}
        };As you can see, they are pre-sorted by the hex values. That is useful for part of the app.
    There are 1,567 entries. I would like to alphabetize the color names and place them in a list widget. I need to keep the associated hex color values with the name values. All I can think of to do something like:
    1) make a temporary long 1-d string array
    2) fill it by loop that appends the hex values to the name values: temp[i] = new String (names[1] + names[i][0])
    3) sort temp[] with built in Java sort
    4) make a permanent new string array, hexValues[] for the hex values
    5) copy the last 6 characters of each item to hexValues[]
    6) truncate the last 6 characters of each item in temp[]
    7) build list widget with temp[]
    Is there a more elegant way? What I'd really like to do is build a 1-d array of int's, with the values representing the alphabetized locations of the names. However, I don't see any built-in which would do that kind of indirect sort.
    Second question -- Can the backgrounds of each item in a list widget be a different color? Ideally the list would show the color name in black or white, and the its color value as background. Specifically, I'm trying to build the list accomplished by the Javascript code here:
    * http://chir.ag/projects/name-that-color/
    and add it to my Java interactive color wheel:
    * http://r0k.us/graphics/SIHwheel.html
    BTW, I have converted his name that color Javascript (ntc.js) to a native Java class. It is freely distributable, and I host it here:

    Silly forum software; I can't see what made it go italic at the word new.

    I am implementing a sort infrastructure along the lines of camickr's working example, above. Part of my problem is that I am new to both lists and collections. I've tried searching, and I cannot figure out why the compiler doesn't like my "new":
    public class colorName implements Comparable<colorName>
        String     name, hex;
        int          hsi;
        static List<colorName> colorNames;
        public colorName(String name, String hex)
         float     hsb[] = {0f, 0f, 0f};
         int     rgb[] = {0, 0, 0};
         int     h, s, b;     // b for brightness, same as i
         this.name = name;
         this.hex  = hex;
         // Now we need to calculate hsi,
         this.hsi = (h << 10) + (s << 6) + b;  //  hhhhhhssssiiiiii
        ***   findColorName() performs 3 functions.  First, it
        *** will auto-initialize itself if necessary.  Second,
        *** it will perform 3 sorts:
        ***   -3) byHSI:  sort by HSI and return first element of sorted list
        ***   -2) byNAME: sort by name and return first element of list
        ***   -1) byHEX:  (re)reads ntc.names, which is already sorted by HEX;
        ***               returns first element of list
        *** Third, on 0 or greater, will return the nth element of list
        *** Note: ntc.init() need not have been called.
        public colorName findColorName(int which)
         if (which < -3)  which = -3;
         if (which >= ntc.names.length)  which = ntc.names.length - 1;
         if (which == -1)  colorNames = null;     // free up for garbage collection
         if (colorNames == null)
         {   // (re)create list
             colorNames = new ArrayList<colorName>(ntc.names.length);
             for (int i = 0; i < ntc.names.length; i++)
                 colorNames.add(new colorName(ntc.names[1], ntc.names[0]));
            if (which == -1)  return(colorNames.get(0));
    }On compilation, I receive:
    D:\progming\java\ntc>javac colorName.java
    colorName.java:117: cannot find symbol
    symbol  : constructor colorName(java.lang.String[],java.lang.String[])
    location: class colorName
                    colorNames.add(new colorName(ntc.names[1], ntc.names[0]));
                                   ^
    1 errorLine 117 is the second-to-last executable line in code block. I know it is finding the ntc.names[][] array the ntc.class file. I had forgotten to compile ntc.java, and there were other errors, such as in line 115 where it couldn't find ntc.names.length. Compare camickr's two lines:
              List<Person> people = new ArrayList<Person>();
              people.add( new Person("Homer", 38) );As far as I can tell, I'm doing exactly the same thing. If you have any other feedback, feel free to make it. The full source may be found at:
    * http://r0k.us/rock/Junk/colorName.java
    PS1: I know I don't need the parenthesis in my return's. It's an old habit, and they look funny to me without them.
    PS2: My original design had the "static List<colorName> colorNames;" line defined within the findColorName() method. The compiler did not like that; it appears to be that one cannot have static variables within methods. Anyway, that's why I don't have separate sorting and getting methods. I'm learning; "static" does not mean, "keep this baby around". Its meaning is, "there is only one of these babies per class".

  • Remove null values from string array

    Hi ,
    I have a string array in a jsp page which I save some values inside. After I store the values I want to print only those who are not null. How can I do this? Is there a way to delete the null values?

    Thank you but because I am new in programming what do you mean to use continue. Can you explain it a little bit further?<%
    //go through the array to check all the values
    for(int i=0; i<array.length();i++) {
    //If array is null, nothing happen
    if(array==null){
    //leave here blank; instead use continue like:
    //this will skip the statements next to it, and increments the value of i in for loop and continues to execute the body of for loop.
    //The same will be repeated till the last iteration.
    continue;
    //If array not null, then print value in a new line
    else{
    out.print(array+"<br>"); //don't change the logic here
    %>

  • Getting one character at a certain position from a string array

    Hi, i'm new at learning java, but have strong experience at C++ and asm. How would i get one character at a certain positon from a string array.
    for example:
    String Phrases[] = {"To be or not to be, that is the question","The Simpsons","The Mole","Terminator three rise of the machines","The matrix"};
    that is my string array above.
    lets say i wanted to get the first character from the first element of the array which is "T", how would i get this

    ok well that didn't work, but i found getChars function can do what i want. One problem, how do i check the contents of char array defined as char Inchar[];

  • How to add elements into java string array?

    I open a file and want to put the contents in a string array. I tried as below.
    String[] names;
    s = new Scanner(new BufferedReader(new FileReader("outfile.txt")));
    while (s.hasNext()) {
                    String item = s.next();
                    item.trim();
                    email = item;
                    names = email;
                }But I know that this is a wrong way of adding elements into my string array names []. How do I do it? Thanks.

    Actually you cannot increase the size of a String array. But you can create a temp array with the lengt = lengthofarray+1 and use arraycopy method to copy all elements to new array, then you can assign the value of string at the end of the temp array
    I would use this one:
    String [] sArray = null;
    s = new Scanner(new BufferedReader(new FileReader("outfile.txt")));
    while (s.hasNext()) {
        String item = s.next();
        item.trim();
        email = item;
        sArray = addToStringArray(sArray, email);
    * Method for increasing the size of a String Array with the given string.
    * Given string will be added at the end of the String array.
    * @param sArray String array to be increased. If null, an array will be returned with one element: String s
    * @param s String to be added to the end of the array. If null, sArray will be returned.(No change)
    * @return sArray increased with String s
    public String[] addToStringArray (String[] sArray, String s){
         if (sArray == null){
              if (s!= null){
                   String[] temp = {s};
                   return temp;
              }else{
                   return null;
         }else{
              if (s!= null){
                   String[] temp = new String[sArray.length+1];
                   System.arraycopy(sArray,0,temp,0,sArray.length);
                   temp[temp.length-1] = s;
                   return temp;
              }else{
                   return sArray;

  • Exporting a String Array to an HTML file

    Hey everyone..I'm currently making lots of progress in my project...but right now I've been trying to make a button that exports my search results to an html file...basically what I've made is a search engine to search webcrawler files...
    The result list I get (which is actually a string array), I want to export to html so I can open that html file and find all the links that were found in the search I made..What I have so far is this, but it's not working yet, any help? :
        private class exportListener implements ActionListener
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
                String[] result = parent.getResult();
                if(result == null)
                    return;
                JFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser();
                chooser.setAcceptAllFileFilterUsed(false);
                chooser.setFileFilter(new HtmlFileFilter());
                chooser.setDialogType(JFileChooser.SAVE_DIALOG);
                int returnVal = chooser.showSaveDialog(parent);
                if(returnVal == JFileChooser.CANCEL_OPTION)
                    return;
                File fl = chooser.getSelectedFile();
                String path = fl.getPath() + ".html";
                searchIF.exportResultAsHtml(path);
                System.out.println(path);
        private class HtmlFileFilter extends FileFilter
            public String getDescription(){return "Html";}
            public boolean accept(File pathname)
                String name = pathname.getPath();
                //Just checking to see if the filename ends with html.
                if (name.toLowerCase().substring(name.lastIndexOf('.') + 1).equals("html"))
                    return true;
                return false;
            }

    Actually..nevermind, sorry.
