String.substring(0)

The 1.3.1 and 1.4.0 documentation states:
public String substring(int beginIndex)
Returns a new string that is a substring of this string. The substring begins with the character at the specified index and extends to the end of this string.
However, if you pass 0 as the beginIndex it does NOT return a new string, it returns itself.
From the 1.3.1 source:
    public String substring(int beginIndex) {
     return substring(beginIndex, count);
    public String substring(int beginIndex, int endIndex) {
     if (beginIndex < 0) {
         throw new StringIndexOutOfBoundsException(beginIndex);
     if (endIndex > count) {
         throw new StringIndexOutOfBoundsException(endIndex);
     if (beginIndex > endIndex) {
         throw new StringIndexOutOfBoundsException(endIndex - beginIndex);
     return ((beginIndex == 0) && (endIndex == count)) ? this :
         new String(offset + beginIndex, endIndex - beginIndex, value);
    }So, the API documentation is wrong in this respect. I did a search in the bug database but couldn't find a bug for this.

The 1.3.1 and 1.4.0 documentation states:
public String substring(int beginIndex)
Returns a new string that is a substring of this
string. The substring begins with the character at the
specified index and extends to the end of this
string.
However, if you pass 0 as the beginIndex it does NOT
return a new string, it returns itself.i wouldn't be too concerned about this. unless you're doing something really specialized, you shouldn't be terribly concerned about the identity of content-equivalent Strings.
has anyone really felt misled by this slice of documentation?

  • UCCX Script String Substring Function

    I cannot use the Substring function to obtain a specific value from a string variable.
    My substring position is variable, so I need to put a variable, loop and increment it the position.
    When I try to add the below command, this is getting the error message:
    Command: set STR_Resultado = STR_Valor.substring(P1,2+1)
    Error message:
    "Unable to parse expression; error while parsing string: STR_Valor.substring(P1,P2); nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException"

    To ask the obvious: do either P1 or STR_Valor have a null value at the time that step executes? If they do, this is the expected result. Use an On Exception Goto step or other preventative code to protect the step from this exception.
    Why does your command and the error not match?
    Command: substring(P1,2+1)
    Exception: substring(P1,P2)
    If the command statement is what you're actually using (your image attachment isn't showing) then I believe you have a syntax error. The substring method documentation doesn't suggest you can do additive operations here.
    Most likely the first bullet though...
    PS- You may want to get the length of the string first and ensure that the startIndex and endIndex are less than or equal to it. I believe you'll get a IndexOutOfBoundsException if you try to pull a substring from outside the bounds of the actual string.

  • Interesting problems with the 1.2.2 Debugger and String.substring(int)

    Guys/Gals,
    Here's an interesting problem to ponder...
    I define the following values in my class:
    private String descriptorClassName = null;
    private String userObjectClassName = null;
    private String name = null;
    I run the following piece of code as part of the constructor:
    descriptorClassName = this.getClass().getName();
    userObjectClassName = descriptorClassName.substring(0, descriptorClassName.indexOf("Descriptor"));
    name = userObjectClassName.substring(userObjectClassName.lastIndexOf(".")+1);
    The first line assigns the value of "com.foo.user.UserDataDescriptor" to descriptorClassName.
    The second line assigns the value of "com.foo.user.UserData" to userObjectClassName.
    The third line assigns the value of "UserData" to name.
    As I step through the code, I see the first two values being set, and yet the third value for name is reported by the debugger as:
    "name = null".
    I added a call to log4j, which reports that that value of name has been correctly set!
    This seems to be a result of the String.substing(int) call, as the call to Sring(substring(int, int) is fine.
    Has anyone come accross this one before?
    Does anyone have any workarounds other than:
    name = userObjectClassName.substring(userObjectClassName.lastIndexOf(".")+1, userObjectClassName.length());
    Cheers all.
    Regards,
    Chris.

    I've been trying to reproduce this problem and it always works perfectly. The debugger tells me that name = "UserData". I'm using JDev 3.2.2 and my project is using JDK1.2.2_JDeveloper. Here's the exact source code I'm trying.
    package com.foo.user;
    public class UserDataDescriptor {
    private String descriptorClassName = null;
    private String userObjectClassName = null;
    private String name = null;
    public UserDataDescriptor() {
    descriptorClassName = this.getClass().getName();
    userObjectClassName = descriptorClassName.substring(0, descriptorClassName.indexOf("Descriptor"));
    name = userObjectClassName.substring(userObjectClassName.lastIndexOf(".")+1);
    System.out.println("end of constructor");
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    UserDataDescriptor userDataDescriptor = new UserDataDescriptor();
    null

  • String - subString()

    Hi everybody,
    I have a string variable which has brackets in it. When I try to use subString(), that is extracting a part of that variable within the brackets, it throws PatternSyntaxException.

    But, when I run, it throws PatternSyntaxException saying Unclosed group near index 9.
    Could anybody help me solving this issue?

  • String.substring not functioning??

    Hi everyone,
    I am a newbie to Java but couldn't wait to dig in. I am using TEXpad and got the following output. I have also used SunOne and it gave me the same results. Any Ideas?
    This is a snipet of the code I have trouble with. inputLne is a String.
    inputLine = loginRead.readLine();//input from socket stream
    System.out.println(inputLine); //000&000&~ stored in inputLine
    System.out.println(inputLine.length()); // 9 is printed
    System.out.println(inputLine.substring(2,1)); // Exception happens here
    System.out.println(inputLine.substring(2,2));
    System.out.println(inputLine.substring(2,3));
    tempLine = inputLine.substring(2,1);
    The output below is from the code above.
    000&000&~

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Alright, thanks for the advice but I still have a small question.
    The exception is now gone.
    If I use (2,4) I get "0&"
    If I use (2,3) I get the exception error posted above.
    How can I get a substring of one character long? I just want the third "0" from the left "000&000&~".
    Again, thanks for the help.

  • Number of occurence of substring in a string ?.

    Hi,
    Are there any direct functions available in oracle to count the occurence of a substring in a main string. instr function gives only the position. for e.g: We wanted to count the number of "." in a string
    "oracle.co.in" . It should return 2.
    Any thoughts ?
    With thanks in advance
    Ranjeesh

    Purushotham:
    You are right about the casewhen the string and the substring are the same, the query will return NULL. However, it will return 0 if the substring is not in the string. The NVL version would be:
    NVL((Length(string) - length(replace(string, substring, null)))/length(substring),1);The other consideration is whether you want this case sensitive or not. or case insensitivity, you will need to user UPPER or LOWER on both string and substr inside the REPLACE function.

  • How do i find the length of a string??

    trying to use the substring, I know the beginIndex (in my case 10), but the string will vary in size and so i need to find the last character and set it as the endIndex, how do i do this?
    public String substring(int beginIndex,
    int endIndex)Returns a new string that is a substring of this string. The substring begins at the specified beginIndex and extends to the character at index endIndex - 1. Thus the length of the substring is endIndex-beginIndex.
    Examples:
    "hamburger".substring(4, 8) returns "urge"
    "smiles".substring(1, 5) returns "mile"
    Parameters:
    beginIndex - the beginning index, inclusive.
    endIndex - the ending index, exclusive.
    Returns:
    the specified substring.

    Hi
    To substring the string where u know the begin index and want to extract till the end use the following function from the String class of the java.lang package
    String substring(int beginindex);
    String test = "Hello";
    String xx = test.substring(1);
    The Value stored in xx will be ello
    This is in case u need till the end of the String
    If wanna skip the last character u can
    use
    String substring(int beginindex,int endindex);
    String test = "Hello";
    String xx = test.substring(1,test.length()-1);
    The Value stored in xx will be ell

  • How to extract specific line from a string

    Hi guys.
    I?m starting to work with java...
    i have the following data inside a string variable:
    0 rows inserted.
    0 rows updated.
    0 rows ignored.
    98 rows marked as deleted.
    0 rows have no country.
    3345 rows have no geo.
    0 rows are invalid.
    what i want to do i to extract the number of rows marked as delete.
    I think that i figured out how to extract the number from this line :"98 rows marked as deleted."
    but how do i get to that line?
    I hope you can Help me. Thanks.

    the string is the result from a Function... this function gets the info from a store procedure...
                   rta = "Results for " + dh.getSource() + " source:\n" +
    dh.getInsertedCount() + " rows inserted.\n" +
    dh.getUpdatedCount() + " rows updated.\n" +
    dh.getIgnoredCount() + " rows ignored.\n" +
                   dh.getDeletedCount() + " rows marked as deleted.\n" +
                   dh.getNoCtryCnt() + " rows have no country.\n" +
                   dh.getNoGeoCnt() + " rows have no geo.\n" +
                   dh.getInvalidCnt() + " rows are invalid.\n";
    i can?t change this function...
    so i need to work with the returned value...
    i what thinking to use the following method to extract te number...
    private int GetNumericValue(string sVal)
    int iFirst, iCharVal, iEnd;
    int iMult = 1, iRet = 0;
    char[] aNumbers = "1234567890".ToCharArray();
    iFirst = sVal.IndexOfAny(aNumbers);
    iEnd = sVal.LastIndexOfAny(aNumbers);
    if (iEnd < 0)
    return 0;
    string subStr = sVal.Substring(iFirst, iEnd - iFirst + 1);
    iEnd = subStr.Length - 1;
    while (subStr.Length > 0)
    iCharVal = int.Parse(subStr[subStr.Length-1].ToString());
    iRet += iMult * iCharVal;
    iMult *= 10;
    if (iEnd <= 0)
    break;
    subStr = subStr.Substring(0, subStr.Length - 1);
    iEnd = subStr.LastIndexOfAny(aNumbers);
    subStr = sVal.Substring(iFirst, iEnd + 1);
    return iRet;
    but i still need the 4rd line to extract the number

  • Reading a tab delimited file and extracting a substring

    hi all,
    i have a text file which is tab delimited,which contains keys and values.like the first 3 lines are keys which are like 50 keys(1-50).The remaining lines contains values..so that when it is is opened in excel sheet each value gets mapped to its key.My problem is i have to extract a substring between the two keys from the text file...for eg. between
    (10-11)..does anyone know how to do it.if so please post it.
    thanks

    I'm not sure what your question is. The API docs for String.substring(int, int) are fairly straightforward. You will call String.indexOf(String) to find your delimiter. If you only want the portion after the delimiter, then call String.substring(posDelimiter + 1) and you are done. If you want the portion before the delimiter, then call String.substring(0, posDelimiter). If you want a portion between two delimiters, then call String.indexOf() again, and then call String.substring(startDelimiter + 1, endDelimiter);
         static final public void main(final String[] args) {
              String test = "Hello World=Java Program";
              // Portion before a delimiter (=)
              int posDelimiter = test.indexOf("=");
              System.out.println(test.substring(0, posDelimiter));
              // Portion after a delimiter (=)
              System.out.println(test.substring(posDelimiter + 1));
              // Portion between two delimiters (space)
              int posStart = test.indexOf(" ");
              int posFinish = test.indexOf(" ", posStart + 1);
              System.out.println(test.substring(posStart + 1, posFinish));

    The problem occurs at line 66 in class car.deDeedandeSurvey.view.frameworkExt.CustomErrorHandler, which is a non-ADF class, most probably it is a class of your own. Go to line 66 in this class and look at the source code. If it is not clear what happens there, set a breakpoint within the method car.deDeedandeSurvey.view.frameworkExt.CustomErrorHandler.displayProperly and debug it. If you do not have the original source code, then decompile this class and look at the source code. You can set a breakpoint at this line even if you do not have the source code.

  • How to read a string character by character and pass it into an array

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to write a function.The thing is,i need to read string,replace space with a NULL,return in the form of an arrayy.
    for this what i thought is,if the character is not a space,i need to put that into array,if its space,put a NULL for that.
    the string is of type varchar2.
    ex:XX XX XX
    i need some suggestions for this.
    thanks

    Well, you can just use a loop that runs for the length of the string.
    Then for each iteration of the loop, take the next character of the string (substr or similar) and add it to the array. If it's a space, then add a NULL to the array (if that's what you want).
    Easy :)

    It is recommended that your inputs are validated by the program.
    However you might choose not to validate them under following circumstances:           -If cloning a context on source system for a remote system.
             -If cloning a context on a machine where the ports are taken and
              you do not want to shutdown the services at this point.

  • Substring Display Problem

    Hi,
    I have a scenario of where the database has quite a bit of
    long strings of numerical data, and I am wondering if it is
    possible that I can just substring it so that I get only the first
    five values excluding the decimal point when I print it out.
    Here is what I have now:
    <mx:Canvas id="data" label="Original Data"
    horizontalScrollPolicy="off" verticalScrollPolicy="off" >
    <mx:DataGrid id="find"
    dataProvider="{rssRequest6.lastResult.one.beam}"
    labelFunction="lfnGeneral5" height="195" width="400">
    <mx:columns>
    <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="ID" width="25"
    fontSize="8" />
    <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Theta" width="95"
    fontSize="8" />
    <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Phi" width="95"
    fontSize="8" />
    </mx:columns>
    </mx:DataGrid>
    <mx:Text text="ID: {find2.selectedItem.id}" width="391"
    height="15" top="215"/>
    <mx:Text text="Theta: {find2.selectedItem.theta}"
    width="391" height="15" top="226"/>
    <mx:Text text="Phi: {find2.selectedItem.phi}" width="391"
    height="15" top="238"/>
    </mx:Canvas>
    When the data prints out, I want only the four digits, while
    now it prints out 15 numbers all together in one string for each
    item. Is there some way which I can substring my text so that it
    only prints out no more than 2 places after the decimal point?
    Anything is appreciated.
    Alice

    Hi,
    It appears that the function brought back some other errors
    that tell me I cannot have an undefined var before a return clause
    is established.
    This is what I have in my clause:
    private function phi(data:Object, field:String,
    index:Number, percentValue:Number):String {
    var temp:String= ("Phi " + (index as String).substr(0,2));
    return temp;
    I then tried to call the function by using
    <mx:Text text="Phi: {phi(find2.selectedItem.phi)}"
    width="391" height="15" top="238"/>
    I was however returned with the following error:
    1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 4.
    Is there some way I can fix this?
    Thanks.
    Alice
