Stroke zero

Hi
no doubt a silly easy question but it's lost me.
If I use shift/alt and draw a circle then add a gradient it looks exactly what I want apart from the circle has a stroke whereas I don't want one because it spoils my circle. In the stroke options I seem unable to set the stroke to 0 .25 is my lowest option.
Using CS4 on windows.
Can someone point me in the right direction
thanks
Ian

1. Draw a path. Solid fill. Solid stroke.
2. Key 0 into the Stroke weight field. Stroke disappears (becomes None).
3. Pathfinder Palette: Click the Outline Pathfinder icon. Look at the Stroke weight in the Stroke Palette. (It is set to 0.) But the stroke is visible, and it prints.
If you key a zero into the Stroke Weight field, the field clears and the stroke becomes None. But the programs itself "keys" a zero into the stroke weight field and it sticks. So a zero in the Stroke Weight field does not necessarily equate to Stroke of None.
With AI's antialiasing, this can be easy to overlook, especially if the "zero stroke weight" is a light color. Can wreck printing jobs.
CS3. Bug has existed for several versions.

  • Font Different in InDesign & Pages

Hello.  I'm new to InDesign and this forum, but I'm having a problem and thought somebody might be able to help.
The problem is with a book I've laid out and am in the process of printing in InDesign CS4 (for Mac)...The typeface (Baskerville) looks different in InDesign than it does in Apple Pages or MS Word.  I'm using the same typeface at the same size.  Neither is bold or italic.  The difference, which is much more pronounced on the printed page than onscreen, seems to be mostly in the thickness of the letters.  In Pages and Word, most of the lines are thin and there's a large contrast between thin and thick lines.  In InDesign, the thin lines seem thickened and there's less contrast, as if the text were semibold.
This is disappointing, because I greatly prefer the way the text looks in Pages and Word.
Is this an issue that anybody else has come across?
    Thanks for the help,
    Ben

Because InDesign treats text characters like a hybrid of text as you know it, and also as objects - that is, a character has a path around it (like an outline or border) and a fill inside the path - it's possible to set a line property for the path that's independent of the fill. (Sometimes the path is called "stroke;" a bit ambiguous, because applying a line property to a path, such as thickness, color, pattern, and some others, is called "adding a stroke to a path," or simply "stroking a path.")
What this means for your situation is that if the paths of the text characters have picked up a stroke property, they'll look thicker and blockier; open spaces in letters like o, c, e, a, and so on, will fill in. Select some text and check its stroke property anywhere the stroke can be measured, such as the Stroke panel, or the Character Color property pane of the Character Styles or Paragraph Styles panels.
The washed-out lower-contrast may be due to the setting of the Preferences setting for Appearance of Black. I think it defaults to Rich Black rather than 100% Black.
These setting differences may occur with text that's created in another application and placed/imported into InDesign.
Look up stroke characters and appearance of black in InDesign help.
EDIT: I forgot to say that usually you want no stroke (zero points) on text. The appearance of black is more a personal taste issue.

  • Text Stroke Options Unavailable, All Black Grads

Can someone explain to me why the hell I have no stroke alignment options available to me for text? See the screenshot below...
I am unable to select inside or outside alignment. Likewise there is nothing showing in the appearance panel for the selected text...
And if I add a stroke to the selected text from this panel I am presented with similarly grayed-out inside/outside alignment options. Moreover, if I try and apply a gradient to selected text it blacks out entirely. I've read elsewhere searching for a solution that I need to rearrange the order of the effects in the Appearance panel. Both (when showing) items like stroke and fill are locked, can't drag to reposition, nor can I select to duplicate to create multiple strokes.
There is nothing fancy about the text. Just straight type. I have followed suggestions to dump the preferences file and have done so. I have gone so far as completely uninstalling Illustrator including shared preferences and then reinstalling. No joy. I've also seen suggestions that the color mode must be in RGB (or CMYK, can't recall) which makes zero sense as that should not limit ability to be able to modify stroke or apply gradients. Regardless, the above holds true in both modes.
What am I missing here? It's pissing me off and I'm sure there must be something simple, but I've changed none of the presets from the re-install and I can't conceive of such fundamental operations being truncated based on a conflict elsewhere.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

    Jay,
In addition to what Larry suggested for the Fill, it is actually possible to have the stroke inside/outside: sometimes it is possible to fake what you cannot make (directly):
You may fake the inside/outside alignment as follows:
    1) In the Appearance palette flyout click Add New Stroke (efter the New Fill so the stroke comes on top);
    2) Set the Stroke Weight in the Stroke palette as desired;
    3) Effect>Path>Offset Path by half the Stroke Weight (just the value ( + ) for outside, put a minus first ( - ) for inside).

  • In ColumnChart, how to stop displaying small column for zero value?

I'm trying to create a ColumnChart that does not display a column when the value is zero. The chart currently looks like this:

    Answered my own question!!
The solution is to set the stroke for the ColumnSeries to {noStroke}, which I defined like this:
        <mx:Stroke id="noStroke" color="0xFFFFFF" weight="0"/>
Note that if you define {noStroke} without a color property, black is used by default, which means that those columns that do appear show up in black stroke outline.
If there's a more elegant solution to the problem, please let me know...

  • Table Needs 1 Pt. Side Strokes that End in Solid Circle Caps

I am working on a long document that has numerous (over 100) callout text boxes that must flow with the text. Because there will be a number of edits in the copy, I have put that text into a 1-column/1-row table. This allows the callout text to keep within the text flow of the document as edits are made to that text, as well as independently grow or shrink as edits are made to the text within the table.
The ideal table should look like this. [This is not a formatted table; just a box of text with side strokes and 4 separate little circles added at the corners.]:
I am working on a Table Style/Cell Style combination that can create this look, but the closest I've come is this:
My Table Style is basically just a 1-col, 1 cell item with no fill and no stroke.
My main Cell Style has the text indents and a 1-pt stroke on each side.
I made a new Dots Stroke Style that is used to create the spaced dots at the corners. It uses the dotted style rule with the pattern length (spacing) set at 19 picas (the column width is 18 picas) and the corners set to "adjust gaps."
I added a header and footer row to the table. To the header row I added a bottom stroke using the new Dots Stroke Style. To the footer row I added a top stroke that uses the new Dots Stroke Style.
I'm getting close, but unfortunately it looks like my header and footer have inherited the side rules from the main Cell Style, and my corner dots are not sitting properly over the rules.
    Thoughts?

@Angie – I'd solve this with 4 anchored objects (the circles) that are positioned relative to the edge of the text column (In my German InDesign: "Spaltenrand"):
    1. The basic concept:
Now with the Story Editor open:
You can see: The four circles are inserted as anchored objects in a separate paragraph.
    2. Now you can adjust the relative position of every circle to the edge of the cell. This is working, because InDesign is treating every cell as a separate text column.
    3. To get the positions right, you need:
    a. The size of the circle
    b. The width of the cell's stroke
    c. The insets of the cell (in my example set to zero, but your case will be different)
This concept is very flexible. You can change the width and the height of the cell and the circles will move along:

  • Add Strokes to Placed Images in Illustrator

    Hi All,
I'm having a problem to add a stroke "frame" around my tiff image in Illustrator. My image is a "traced picture" from Photoshop. I used the following technique:-
    Technique: Use an Effect
Choose File > Place and select an image to place into Illustrator document.
Choose File > Place and select an image to place into Illustrator document.
The image is selected. Open Appearance panel and from the Appearance panel flyout menu, choose Add New Stroke.
With the Stroke highlighted in the Appearance panel, choose Effect > Path > Outline Object.
However, the result I got was the stroke around the image NOT the frame around the image.
How do I  achieve it. Any help and tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Technique #1: Use a Mask
This technique requires Illustrator CS3 and works only when your keyline will be rectangular in shape.
Choose File > Place and choose an image to place into your Illustrator document. You can either Link or Embed the image. Once you've chosen the image, click the Place button.
The image is selected (if your image already exists in your document, select it now), so if you look in your Control panel at the top of the screen, you'll see a button labeled "MASK". Click on it. This creates a mask at the exact bounds of the image.
Press the "D" key for Default. This gives the mask a black 1 pt stroke attribute. Adjust the stroke per your design needs.
NOTE: An additional benefit to this method of using a mask is that you now have the elements in place to simulate a "frame and image" paradigm like InDesign. Once you've created your mask, you can decide to "crop" your image by double clicking anywhere on the photo. This will put you into Isolation Mode. Now click on the frame edge and resize at will. When you're done, double click outside the image to exit isolation mode and continue working. This method works wonderfully when you're using the Selection tool (black arrow) and have the Bounding Box option turned on (in the View menu).
    Technique #2: Use an Effect
At first, it may seem that applying a keyline with the use of an Effect is a tedious process. But we all know that once we've applied an effect, we can store it as a Graphic Style, at which point applying our keyline will become a single click. Go ahead, ask me why Adobe doesn't ship Illustrator with such an effect as a default setting in the NDPs (New Document Profiles). Go ahead, ask me why Adobe doesn't allow us to assign keyboard shortcuts to styles like InDesign does. I don't have answers to either of those questions (sorry). But let's get on with the styles, shall we?
There are two separate effects that we can use, and each provides a different benefit.
Choose File > Place and select an image to place into your Illustrator document. You can either Link or Embed the image. Once you've chosen the image, click the Place button.
The image is selected (or if your image already exists in your document, select it). Open your Appearance panel and from the Appearance panel flyout menu, choose Add New Stroke. We can't see the stroke yet, because all we have is an image. But we'll change that in short order.
With the Stroke highlighted in the Appearance panel, choose Effect > Convert to Shape > Rectangle. Check the Preview button, select the Relative option, and set both the Extra Width and Extra Height to zero (0). (Be careful not to press Tab after you enter the second value, or it will switch back to Absolute.) Click OK to apply the effect. Style the stroke attribute to match your design preference.
Now make this easier to apply in the future. With the object still selected, open the Graphic Styles panel and click the New Graphic Style button at the bottom of the panel. Give the style an appropriate name. If you then add this style to your NDPs, it will be readily available in all new files that you create.

  • Need to get rid of stroke

Hi,(CS3 XP) I was extracting an image from a background and when I was done (using layer style) I put a stroke around the image to see if I'd missed anything. I then copy and pasted a few things on that image and combined the layers of the image, neglecting to remove the stroke.
I then went about extracting some other images that were on the same file. When I went back to my original image I couldn't remove the stroke that was around the image and I couldn't step backward far enough to reach the stroke. The fx symbol was not on that layer so I couldn't drag it to the trash. Am I stuck with it? Did combining the layers in effect flatten it? It was a pretty complicated image and I'd rather not have to redo it. I tried restroking the image and setting the opacity to zero but that didn't help. Is there a way to undo a group of layers once you've combined them?
    Questions, questions.....

    >
"Did combining the layers in effect flatten it?"
    Yep.
    >
"Is there a way to undo a group of layers once you've combined them?"
    Nope.
    >
"It was a pretty complicated image and I'd rather not have to redo it."
It's the type of irreversible boo-boo all of us have made at one time or another.
It'll go faster the second time, if that's any consolation.
Next time you want to flattenjust to test stuff outmake any layers you want to exclude invisible, and use the CTRL + ALT + Shift + E shortcut. It'll flatten/combine just the visible layers into a new layer.

  • Scale path without affecting stroke width

    Hi all,
This seems like it should be simple to do but I'm not having any luck here. Basically I have a path parented to a null that controls several things, scaling them down, rotating and moving across the composition. One of those items is a path with a stroke of 32 px.  I want to be able to scale the path itself down, but leave the stroke the same.
I thought I could key the stroke width manually but that has no effect- scaling it up as the path scales down doesn't seem to change the stroke width at all at the end keyframe, only at the beginning keyframe. I see the px count start at 32 and increase up to as it moves along the timeline, even though the stroke width on screen is still getting smaller as if there were no change at all to the width.
    Thanks!

You generally don't want to scale the layer that contains the stroke, you want add keyframes to the mask path and animate the size of the path. This is easy. You just start by double-clicking one of the vertices and using the transform box.
If this technique does not work for you then you have two other options, both involving expressions. Both of these options use exactly the same expression to look at the scale of your null layer and both assume that the null is at 100% scale at the start of the animation. The option that I would choose would be to replace the mask path on a layer with stroke applied with shape layer path with stroke applied. You have so many more options and you're dealing with vector information. With either solution this is the expression.
    sf = thisComp.layer("Control Null 1").transform.scale[0]/100;
    ov = value;
    nv = ov / sf
sf (scale factor) is the x scale value of the controlling null that is the parent of the stroke layer or the layer with the stroke effect applied to a mask divided by 100. If you intend to scale X and Y of the parent you'll have to modify the expression and then combine the scale factors and this solution will not work as well.  The original scale value is divided by 100 to turn it into a decimal value
ov (original value)  is the original set value of the stroke.
nv (new value) is calculated by dividing the original value by the scale factor.
This is just basic algebra from the 7th grade. If your controlling parent is scaled below 0 then the stroke will go away because the value will change to a negative number. If this is necessary in your composition you can write an if statement that will change the nv back to a positive number if the scale factor becomes less than or equal to zero and solves the divide by zero error you would get with a scale factor of zero.
One last point, and this is important. This expression will produce accurate results if applied to the brush size of a mask path when using the Effects>Generate>Stroke effect to create your line but when scaled over 100% the line will begin to fall apart and anti aliasing will not be able to keep up with pixilation caused by the scale. Over about 120% the line will start to look thinner and over 140% it will look bad even though the stroke width is numerically accurate.
I'll let you take it from here.

  • How do I auto set stroke weight, stroke colors & fill color?

    Hi,
I'd like to make it easier for our 100,000 designers to use AI to make custom products using a laser cutter.
    Current Practice
Designers open our AI laser cutting design templates, add their designs using the AI settings our online pricing system can read, then upload their designs to our website for instant pricing, making and shipping.
    The Problem
Designers have to manually setup AI with settings that can be read by our online pricing system. If they get these settings wrong, our system can not read their designs. So they are rejected and can not be priced or made. This happens more often that you'd imagine.
    The Solution
Designers do not like design rejections. So I'd like to eradicate them by providing our designers with a version of AI that provides the following settings only:
    * Set document to RGB
    * Stroke weight = 0.01mm
    * Stroke colors = RGB 0, 0, 255 and 255, 0, 0
    * Fill color = RGB 0, 0, 0
This will mean designers have a very limited number of AI choices, with nothing to distract them or to get wrong. Which will result in less (or zero?) design rejections. And products made faster than before. Rejoice!
    Question
How do we program our AI laser cutting design templates so that when they are opened in AI, they auto set AI settings as defined above?
    Thanks so much.
    Derek

Your first point - yes, that's what our system does currently. As a result designers get lots of 'how to fix' messages as a result of design rejections. We wish to reduce these rejections and resulting 'how to fix' messages by limiting their choices in AI - because this is where the problems are created.
Ok, yeah gotcha, so customers/designers think they do it right (cough/laugh) upload, then get surprised to find out they didn't by your upload system. That's kind of what I thought. I feel your pain. ;-) I sense you want to reduce this aspect to keep the customers/designers happy and thinking they do nothing but work magic all day right? ;-) So you don't want to lose customers in the midst of frustration of file rejection thinking there files are right and your system is certainly wrong, when in fact it's the opposite. Good luck explaining that to a designer however, right? ;-)
    Ponoko wrote:
Your second point - You go on to talk about using a complex "action" we could distribute within the design templates. Although I suspect this is different, the path we're thinking is to include something in the templates that, when imported into AI, sets AI with the color palette we need, line weight we need. Possible?
As Monika hinted at you can't rigidly restrict or control what a user is allowed to do and use in Illustrator. You can try to reduce the parameters by saving the file as a Template.ait file, but even then they can muck about all day until they mess things up again, plus you have no control whatsoever even then as to whether they use fills, the stroke weights, etc. That is why I mentioned various things to manipulate the file once they deem it completed and ready to submit/upload. Basically a method to fix what they messed up or did incorrectly and instead set things as they should be for submission as I previously mentioned. I mentioned you may be able to create a complex Illustrator "action" action.aia that they run to process these requirements. I am not sure if such an action could be accomplished as all inclusive (perhaps though) otherwise you could as stated do it through scripting and a script they run: script.jsx to prepare the requirements, or an actual standalone helper app you create and provide like I mentioned above as well.
I see for CorelDRAW & Inkscape you require SVG, why not change that for Illustrator also so all your 2D app submissions are SVG based? Then manipulate the SVG server side, point out the changes and why and have the customer approve the new modified SVG Preview of the needed changes and move along with the process from there? Make all the requirement changes on the server by manipulating the SVG. You should have access to all of the requirements: RGB color model, stroke weight, stroke colors, fill colors, create font outlines, image tracing? I am just tossing out ideas here, get your programmers busy, tell them to stop playing video games and "make it so". ;-)
But even so, this then begs the question: What are you doing to circumvent the same issues for inept CorelDraw and Inkscape users?
Since, they have the same freedom to do things incorrectly and misaligned with the requirements, just as Illustrator users do.
Regardless though of the approach customers/designers may not like seeing certain things changed even minutely in trivial amounts and thusly be just as upset or up in arms with the changes to their pretty design files that they think were not needed in the first place, how dare you undermine them ;-). Same as seeing the file rejection from your system upon upload. Again I feel your pain. You have your Application/File requirements requirements stated nicely and plainly, it should be pretty easy for most, but sadly I guess not.

  • Problems with opening CS3 doc in CS5 (stroke added, etc.)

After importing documents to CS5 from CS3 I find that I have strokes in the text frames (some of them at least) and the page numbers lack kerning.
    http://tinypic.com/r/2mzfy1c/7
No stroke exists in the text frames belonging to the master pages, nor did reapplying the master page spread change the stroke to zero.
    Suggestions?
    Thank you.

Yes, I only opened it in CS5. This problem did not exist in CS3.It is not constant against all files and all pages.
I have uploaded a bare bones version of the indd file here:

  • Overprint stroke not working right.

We are in a production environment and have to trap files all the time.  Normally it's not an issue but I've noticed my staff are having problems with overprinting colors.  I don't know if this is a document setting or preferences problem, or something resulting from a recent update.  I am currently running Illustrator CS5.5 (15.1.0 and have all the latest updates).
Here is how to reproduce my problem:
    create a (blue) box using the following color:  C100, M20, Y0, K0
Overlapping the blue box, create a (magenta) box with this color: C0, M100, Y50, K0
Use the same color for the stroke.
On the magenta box, turn on overprint preview, and enable "overprint stroke".
You will see that the stroke becomes semi-transparent as a simulation of how it will print when the stroke overprints.  This is how it should normally work.
    Now try this:
Change the stroke on the magenta box from C0, M100, Y50, K0 to C1, M100, Y50, K0  (in other words, change the cyan from zero to 1)
    The overprint/trapping disappears entirely!
This happens with other colors as well, and the common denominator seems to be that the overprint fails the moment that any 100% color UNDERNEATH the overprinting stroke is present in the stroke color.
Without the overprint working, we are stuck manually creating stroke intersection objects and jumping through all kinds of hoops where we shouldn't have to.
If there is a setting I've missed or a workaround, please help!!!

This is often hard o explain but since you have a cyan plate then added a precentage to the Magenta the precentage of 1% is process the Cyan plate only runs once through the press and therefore you canot over print sice it makes up a component of the magenta.
The means that the are where the 1% cyan is will separte onto the the cyan plate wjhich can only run once.
Say you sue only two fills and the magenta had a 5% C  the cyan plate would look like this
The Magenta plate would loo like this
So thee is no way to overprint it since is is already overprint by being processed so it is doing what it is supposed to do. And of course you cannot6 have 101% Cyan unless you runb it twice.
Multiply is one wa of doing it but not necessarily the best way, the best way would be to run the cyan and magenta mix as spot colors.
There are other ways as well but time consuming so you may not want to even try to accomplish this. Not sure what you would gain with 1% C?

  • [svn:fx-trunk] 7155: Line bug fixes when using gradient strokes

    Revision: 7155

    Log Message:
Line bug fixes when using gradient strokes
SDK-21272 - Lines with gradient (LinearGradientStroke) draw as solid color if perfectly vertical / horizontal
StrokedElement was not taking the stroke weight into account when passing the bounds to the stroke. The gradient strokes rely on the bounds to help them transform the gradient to fit the shape of the stroke.
SDK-21274 - Line with gradient stroke does not draw properly
This bug occurs when the Line has a non-zero x and/or y values and is sharing a DisplayObject. StrokedElement was passing the stroke the measuredX and measuredY position as part of the bounds. Instead, I've changed it to pass in drawX + measuredX and drawY + measuredY which accounts for the drawing offset position.

    Modified Paths:

This bug figures out also when creating a custom spark ComboBox, then trying to programatically update the userProposedSelectedIndex property. The proposed selected index is selected, but does not apply the same skin as when mouse is on rollover or item is selected due to up and down keys.
The issue seems like updating the status of the item renderer to rollover or selected to get the same skin applied.
Please could you attach DropDow nList.as that you edited ?
    Thank you so much.

  • Effect: Outline Stroke doesn't work

I'm on CS2. The Effect "Outline Stroke" doesn't seem to do anything.
I would have expected to be able to colour the fill of the outlined stroke in the same way as if the stroke had been outlined using Object: Path: Outline Stroke. Am I doing something wrong?

I need to keep the original vector path without expanding its appearance.
The strange thing is that when I've got the Outline Stroke effect running I can put a pattern into it but not a gradient.
To do a gradient I have to use the Offset Path effect with a value of half the stroke's original weight, make the stroke weight zero and then put a gradient fill into it. So if the original path was 12 pt I need to offset it by 6 pt.
Stranger still, the selection tools pick up the vector even though I click outside the path. Seems that the area selection is controlled by the bounding box and not by what you see.
Seems a clumsy way of doing things and can get very confusing when you've got a lot of overlapping lines with various gradient fills and transparency.

  • Remove stroke from object in CP4

    Hi everyone
Apologies if this question has been asked before.... I did look for a relevant thread but couldn't find one.
I'm new to Captivate and am trying to create a simple rectangle with a semi-transparent fill, but with no stroke/outline. I can sort out the fill, but cannot find a way to set the stroke to "none" or the width of the stroke to zero. When I look at the Properties of the rectangle (below) I cannot see a way of doing this?
Is there a way I can create a simple shape without a border?
    Many thanks
    Laura

    Hi there
If all you want is a rectangle, you should consider a Highlight Box object. ( Insert > Standard Objects > Highlight Box )
    Cheers... Rick

  • Stroke path problem

This has been driving me crazy!! I created a path using the rounded rectangle shape tool but when I try to stroke the path, a section of the path is faded out. Then when I delete the path the line is still there!!

    One way is to:
Draw the path as a Shape Layer.
Set the Fill to 0 (zero) at the top of the layers panel under Opacity
Click on the small FX at the bottom of the layers panel, click on the word Stroke and adjust the settings.
(click on the screenshot for a larger view)
If you were using the Sroke Path dialog, you might have Simulate Pressure checked.
