Struts Actions before hitting index.jsp

Hi Guys,
In my struts project i specify in my web.xml that index.jsp is the first page.
This is fine but i want to load some data up before index.jsp is rendered i.e i want an action to be called that will forward to this index.jsp page.
How can i set this up?

The first thing you will need to do is create an Action class which extends org.apache.struts.action.Action, which does whatever you need it to do. You probably already have this. Let's assume it's called MyAction and is part of the MyPackage package. The return value should be
return actionMapping.findForward(forward);
where forward in this example is either the String "success" or "error".
Assume our new start up page will be called 'init.jsp'. Modify the welcome-file-list attribute of the web.xml file like so:
<welcome-file-list>
<welcome-file>init.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>
Now crack open struts-config.xml. Create a new global forward
<global-forwards>
<forward
name="init"
path="/init.do"/>
</global-forwards>
Now create a new action mapping
<action-mappings>
<action
path="/init"
type="MyPackage.MyAction">
<forward name="success"
path="/index.jsp"/>
<forward name="error"
path="/pages/Error.jsp"/>
</action>
</action-mappings>
Now finally create the init.jsp file. It will consist of these two lines:
<%@ taglib uri="/tags/struts-logic" prefix="logic" %>
<logic:redirect forward="init"/>
I think that should do it for you.

  • Struts Actions and events in one jsp?!

    Hello,
    I have a problem with Struts actions and events in a jsp.
    It is a search page and when the user clicks the search button I trigger an event and when the user clicks on a link in the result table (same page) I use an action that opens a new detail jsp. The first search query works well, I get a result, open the detail page, go back (using an action).
    Then I start a new search, but struts tries to open the detail page. While debugging I found out, that struts apparantly has no action or event. Why does it work at first time?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Britta

    Thanks for answer,
    I work with actions AND events. I think that`s the problem. When I go back from detail page to search page I use a custom DataForwardAction class with the following method:
    public void onCancel(DataActionContext ctx)
    DCBindingContainer bc = ctx.getBindingContainer();
    HttpServletRequest request = ctx.getHttpServletRequest();
    WebUtils.setSession(request);
    String ziel = request.getParameter("ziel");
    JUCtrlActionBinding action = (JUCtrlActionBinding) bc.findCtrlBinding("Rollback");
    action.doIt();
    try
    ctx.setActionForward(ziel);
    catch (Exception e)
    ctx.setActionForward("liste_freig");
    Ziel has the correct value ("search") and I think the struts config is also correct:
    <action path="/material" type="view.actions.materialAction" className="oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataActionMapping" parameter="/material.jsp" name="DataForm">
    <set-property property="modelReference" value="generalUIModel"/>
    <forward name="liste_freig" path="/liste_freig.do"/>
    <forward name="liste_angelegt" path="/liste_angelegt.do"/>
    <forward name="list_bewertet" path="/list_bewertet.do"/>
    <forward name="liste_abgelehnt" path="/liste_abgelehnt.do"/>
    <forward name="liste_onhold" path="/liste_onhold.do"/>
    <forward name="search" path="/search.do?action=search"/>
    </action>
    But when I get back from material page to search page (the first time it works). The location pathname is material.do not search.do When start a new search the material page opens, not, as desired, the search page with new results.
    Search Action:
    public class searchAction extends DataForwardAction
    public searchAction()
    protected void prepareModel(DataActionContext ctx) throws Exception
    HttpServletRequest request = ctx.getHttpServletRequest();
    DataActionMapping acmap = ctx.getActionMapping();
    DCBindingContainer bc = ctx.getBindingContainer();
    WebUtils.setSession(request);
    JUCtrlActionBinding action = (JUCtrlActionBinding) bc.findCtrlBinding("delSearchQuery");
    action.doIt();
    String sEvent=null;
    try
    sEvent=request.getParameter("event");
    catch (Exception e)
    sEvent=null;
    if (sEvent==null)
    if (request.getParameter("action") != null)
    if (request.getParameter("action").equals("material"))
    Number mat_no=new Number(request.getParameter("MaterialNumber"));
    Number userId=new Number(WebUtils.getUserId(request));
    bc = ctx.getBindingContainer();
    action = (JUCtrlActionBinding) bc.findCtrlBinding("prepareMaterial");
    ArrayList arrayList= new ArrayList();
    arrayList.add(0,mat_no);
    arrayList.add(1,userId);
    action.setParams(arrayList);
    action.doIt();
    ctx.setActionForward("material");
    if (request.getParameter("action").equals("material_datasheet"))
    ctx.setActionForward("material_datasheet");
    super.prepareModel(ctx);
    public void onSearch(DataActionContext ctx)
    DCBindingContainer bc = ctx.getBindingContainer();
    HttpServletRequest request = ctx.getHttpServletRequest();
    WebUtils.setSession(request);
    ctx.setActionForward("search");
    Struts config:
    <action path="/search" className="oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataActionMapping" type="view.actions.searchAction" name="DataForm" parameter="/search.jsp">
    <set-property property="modelReference" value="searchUIModel"/>
    <forward name="search" path="/search.do?action=search"/>
    <forward name="material" path="/material.do?action=material"/>
    <forward name="material_datasheet" path="/material_datasheet.do?action=material_datasheet"/>
    </action>
    I think it`s a Struts bug. Or is there something I don`t see?

  • Setting the Data into a DropDownListBox in index.jsp from DataBase

    Hi,
    I want to put some data in dropdownlist.
    // in PageFlow Controller class
    public String[] items = {"aaa","bbb","ccc"};
    and in index.jsp
    <netui:select optionsDataSource="{pageFlow.items}" dataSource="{actionForm.selections}">
    I run the index.jsp and getting the dropdownlist with items aaa,bbb and ccc.
    Now I place a method in begin() method
    String[] items = conn.getData();//which returns data from database
    but the begin() method is not executed when I run the index.jsp after that I put the code
    String[] items = conn.getData(); in action() method
    it is giving the dropdownlist but after submitting the form i.e after calling the action.
    please tell me how the items will be set to listbox before action i.e when I run the index.jsp.Where can I put the code
    String[] items = conn.getData();
    and why the begin() method is not invoking.
    Regards,
    Sivaram

    Hi,
    I'm not sure if you have solved this yet?
    The issue you are facing is that you are loading the JSP directly. When you do this the pageflow will not be called and so the begin function not called.
    If you simply enter the URL of the pageflow instead of the JSP this will call the begin function, loading your dropdown values, and it should then redirect through an action to your index.jsp
    Hope that this helps
    Cheers

  • Can we keep one action file for all jsp files in struts?"

    I have 5-6 Jsp pages and all are inter connected.
    If any one make changes, these changes should be display in the database.
    In this case, I need only one Action class which can hold or manipulate all changes from all jsp pages. I am not sure "Can we keep one action file for all jsp files?"
    If yes, then how can we configure struts-config.xml file.
    If no, then pls suggest me any altenative solution.

    hai
    go for DispatchAction class and then pass as parameters
    refer struts complete reference...
    it will solve ur problems..

  • Call struts action from javascript?

    Hi all
    I'm having problem already discussed here quite a lot, but I have idea to solve it different way. And need to know is it possible or I'm doing mission impossible here :(
    I have JSP with 2 drop down lilsts, where the second is populated according to selected value from first - that's basically my problem.
    Is it possible to somehow only call my struts action which will return all needed values using javascript and onchange event handler?
    I dont have any experience with javascript, and I'm trying to avoid it as much as possible at the moment.
    Thanks in advance

    well as far your requirement is concern if at all you are planning to implement AJAX try to use the below link which might be of some help...
    http://www.it-eye.nl/weblog/2005/12/13/ajax-in-struts-implementing-dependend-select-boxes/
    However,I somehow feel there are few loopholes in the author's approach...
    i advice to use XmlHttpRequest.reponseXML property there.
    However, i've mentioned a sample code snippet for you reference.
    XML Response Pattern :
    ======================
    <? xml version="1.1" ?>

    <option>
    <val>CUSTOMIZED_VALUE</val>

    </dropdown>Sample.jsp:

    can be used for better purposes instead of devising manual parsing.
    where i've used XmlHttpResponse pattern to be in XML. you may make use of other practices like JSON & so on depending on your requirement..
    and and if you are more instrested in integrating Struts with AJAX using few frameworks & customized tag based support please go though the below link.

  • Struts ActionForm variable values in JSP

    I've tried to get variable values from a Struts ActionForm. I know that I can use Struts's bean tags, but can't figure out correct syntax or may there's some thing else to discover.
    I'm trying something like:
    <bean:define id="atr" name="MyActionForm" property="attribute"/></address>
    <p><%=atr%></p>
    And my struts-config look like:
    <form-bean name="MyActionForm" type="sth.MyActionForm"/>
    And the ActionForm is like:
    private String attribute;
    public String getAttribute() { ... }
    public void setAttribute(String attribute) {...}
    What may be wrong?
    Edited by: aproppon on Sep 26, 2007 9:46 AM

    I've tried with <bean:write... but since I catch exception saying MyActionForm can't be found in any scope. As far as I'm aware I've set request scope like:
    <action input="/jsp/something.jsp" name="MyActionForm" path="/jsp/myAction" scope="request" type="sth.MyAction">
    <forward name="success" path="/jsp/index.jsp"/>
    <forward name="failure" path="/jsp/something.jsp"/>
    </action>

  • Internal links in portal (CSS, images, and other struts actions)

    Good morning gurus! I have another question regarding Struts Portlets. We have an application that builds a page with an image that comes from the database. The application is composed of two Struts actions. One that's in charge of drawing the page and the other action is in charge of bringing the image from the database. The second action is called from a JSP (img src="/getImage.do"). In portal, once the portlet rendered the JSP it doesn't recongnize the other links inside the JSP (the call to the second action). Also, other links suchs as images, CSS, and others Struts actions are not recognized. How can I access images, links, and CSS from the main application (the actual application).
    Best regards,

    Hi Andrew -
    This is a pretty big topic for one thread ... I will try to provide some pointers on where to look for more information.
    1. Need ability for non-html literate authors to update text, images and links on their portion of a shared web page
    In the following whitepaper, see the section: Associated Funtion for Item Display
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/portal/pdf/oow_10gr2_1336_fender.pdf
    This will allow you to prompt your non-HTML literate users for the "parts" to display and you worry about the UI.
    2. Need ability to enforce common look and feel on content provided by non-html literate authors.
    Create pages based on Templates. Templates can force the style on users. Again - do not use text items and the RTE for users, you control the display with an Associated Function.
    3. Prefer ability to approve content before it goes live.
    Grant content contributors "Manage with Approval" access
    5. Need advanced search capabilities
    Check out the search section on Portal OTN
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/portal/content_management_10gr2.html
    Hope this helps,
    Candace

  • Struts action forward is NULL

    Hi,
    I have a Index jsp page. Ihave defined IndexAction as action class for this. I have defined it as <welcome-file> in web.xml.
    Also I have action tab in struts-config file:
    <action path="/index" type="com.cec.cll.webclient.logical.clr.actionclass.IndexAction" scope="request" validate="false">
    < forward name="index" path="/index.jsp"/> </action>
    So when I open my application and this jsp page, it goes to action class and fetch the results from database but when action class return the forward, its coming NULL.
    forward = mapping.findForward("index");
    I could not find why it is not getting mapping for index . Any ideas?

    Action class:
         public ActionForward execute(ActionMapping mapping,
                   ActionForm form,
                   HttpServletRequest request,
                   HttpServletResponse response) throws Exception {
              HttpSession session = request.getSession(true);
              List searchList = null;
              ActionForward forward = null;
              try {
                   searchList = RingUtilizationHelper

  • How to call struts action manually in onchange property???

    Hello!
    action defined in struts-config.xml:
    <action path="/editLafLm" className="oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataActionMapping" type="oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataForwardAction" name="DataForm" parameter="/editLafLm.jsp">
    <set-property property="modelReference" value="editLafLmUIModel"/>
    <forward name="Submit" path="/viewLaf.do"/>
    </action>
    In my JSP the following form:
    <html:form action="/editLafLm.do" target="laf" onsubmit="self.close();">
    <input type="hidden" name="<c:out value='${bindings.statetokenid}'/>" value="<c:out value='${bindings.statetoken}'/>"/>
    <html:select property="StaId1">
    <html:optionsCollection label="prompt" value="index" property="StaId1.displayData"/>
    </html:select>
    <c:out value="${bindings.editingMode}"/>
    <input name="event_Submit" type="submit" value="    OK    "/>
    </html:form>
    When i click choose an entry from the Select list and then click the Submit Button all works well (the action forward goes to viewLaf.do)
    But i want to use the "onchange" property on the select list:
    <html:select property="StaId1" onchange="submit();">
    This is not the same as pressing the Submit button because here the action editLafLm.do is done in a new window (and then i have to click the submit button)...
    So can i call the action or the action forward manually in the onchange-property so that there is the same behavour as clicking on the submit button???
    Thanks
    Markus

    Markus,
    You can use the click method on the submit button called "event_Submit". The trick is to access it in the elements array of the form.
    So instead of:
    <html:select property="StaId1" onchange="submit();">you will have
    <html:select property="StaId1" onchange="elements[n].click();">where n is the correct index of the 'event_Submit' element in the array of form elements.
    If you need to access the form by name you can always count the form name to be DataForm. So from the document it will be:
    document.forms.DataForm.elements[8].click()Charles.

  • Struts Actions in JSF

    Simple question.
    How to implement an action in JSF like it was in Struts.
    Of cource, when I submit some JSF page I may execute an action and redirect to some JSF/JSF, but this is not what I need.
    Imagine I'm first time on the page "index.jsf".
    And I want to execute some action before rendering this page.
    (don't suggest me using a filter -- this is not a JSF solution)
    If somebody still haven't got what I need, one more example of using JSF action.
    I want some JSF action to generate an image instead of HTML content.
    I can implement a servlet doing this job, but this mean that I don't use the same entry point (Controller) -- servlet FacesServlet, but use some other servlet.
    I want to use this servlet (FacesServlet), but to generate an image from some JSF action.
    Regards,
    Oleksa Stelmakh

    If I understand your posting correctly. You are looking for the equivalent of a pageload event on a JSF page. If not, please ignore the rest of the explanation.
    If so, I think you are one of many (including myself) that wonders why JSF framework did not include a pageLoad event concept similar to what .NET does with ability to detect postBack as well. Search this forum for "pageLoad" keyword to review what others came up with as workarounds.
    On the positive side, many JSF extensions offered by vendors like IBM using WSAD 5.1 addressed this issue as part of their solution. And really it is not that complex to address. You basically need to add some artificial tag first thing after <f:view> tag. And then wire its preRender, postRender & decode events to handle the equivalent of PageLoadBegin, PageLoadEnd & PagePost events respectively. And there you have as much equivalent to pageLoad events offered as part of other frameworks (like .NET). It is somehow inconvenient otherwise to write logic that applies to current page in a previous page action event before forwarding to current one.
    It works really well for us using WSAD.
    Hope that helps!

    Jean,
    Your struts-config.xml is not correct. You should not have a terminator after:
    input="/untitled1.jsp"/>
    instead it should be:
    input="/untitled1.jsp">
    As a result the mapping was never found...
    Also your class names need to be package prefixed:
    type="mypackage9.ActionForm1"
    That will get you started.
    You can use the XML syntax checker with right-click menu on the xml node in the navigator.
    Charles.

    posting on the Jdeveloper forum might be more appropriate.
