Stuff (clipboard?) [solved]

Is there a way I can send the output of a command to the clipboard? For example, when putting together a package for the AUR, I want to get some md5sums. So I'll "md5sum [file] > md5" to later open it up in a text editor and copy it. I would much rather be able to just md5 file > clipboard and just paste it! Is this possible?

Yes. You can do it very easily using 'xsel'. It is in community.
Example:
md5sum '/path/to/file/archbannerglass3.jpg' | xsel -i
places this:
91e843907f5d63e49617c4ae8cacf130 /path/to/file/archbannerglass3.jpg
on the X PRIMARY selection (PRIMARY is default). So, middle-clicking will then paste that wherever you like.
To switch to the SECONDARY selection or CLIPBOARD selection, use the -s or -b options, respectively. I'm not familiar with what SECONDARY does, to be honest, but placing the item on the CLIPBOARD selection allows for pasting via the right-click context menu or via CTRL+v.
Note:
When testing xsel's capabilities, you might want to clear the selections between each operation using -c in association with whatever selection option was used to capture the selection, e.g.:
xsel -c
#or
xsel -p -c
clears the PRIMARY selection, and
xsel -b -c
clears the CLIPBOARD selection.
You also might want to temporarily disable things like Glipper and Klipper during your testing just to be sure you don't get confused about whether a copy operation came from xsel or from Glipper or Klipper (i.e., the clear command, rightfully so, will not remove anything from Glipper or Klipper).

Remove old stuff not solved, so asking this

I had a post some days before were some guys tried to help me in removing old stuff which let Fontbook.app crash on start at one user account.
I may try in case this trouble is still not resolved, removiing all fonts from my system and reinstall them from the system dvd as they would be installed by installing a fresh system. Well, since the user libraries do not have any fonts installed, the /Library/Fonts could simply be emptied by me, what do I have to consider deleting the system fonts from /System/Library/Fonts amd it this possible? Will I be able to install all fonts from the system dvd?

In all seriousness. I'm not sure if this is going to help, but I got problems like this when I used plasma with OpenGL in 4.3.3. When I switched to it, I had the icon artifacts like you have. Did you switch plasma to use OpenGL, or possible, just possibly, 4.3.4 uses OpenGL by default and you got the bug still????? Possibly you could try to switch back to raster and see if the problem gets fixed:

Had to reformat and can't connect now

I have a desktop pc and one laptop. I had to take my laptop to the shop for a virus. They wiped my computer clean and reinstalled my operating system. Now I get a message "limited or no connectivity". But my son's friend can bring his laptop and connect right away to our wireless.
Where do I start? Don't know much about this stuff.

Delete the Preferred network from your Computer...and then try to connect the Wireless Network.Make sure that you are typing the correct security key to connect the Wireless Network.
Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties.Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names present in the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...Right click on the Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...It will connect...

WRT54G v1.1 and buffalo Linkstation problems.. help needed

I have a wrt45G with dhcp running and working. Connecting the linkstation out of the box has no effect. Connecting the linkstation directy to the laptop works fine. I changed the config to a fixed IP outside of the DHCP range, but withing the router's range.
Connected it to the router again, No effect, the network line shows no sign of life.
Checked the cables, changed the cables, no effect.
I have abolutely NO idea what's wrong.
Please help, I hope someone has had similar stuff and solved it.

Hi.. Try to change the wireless channel to 6, 9 or 11. Also change beacon interval to 50 and fragmentation and RTS thresholds to 2304. Well you seems to have very old fimrware on your router. I believe linksys has come out with version 4.30.5. You can also try to upgrade the firmware on your router.

Verizon store personnel and customer service less than useless!!

I'll try and make this as short and concise as possible:
1. went to Walmart to research cell phones and available carriers/plans.
2. Verizon rep Melissa was in-store, introduced me to the prepaid $45/month plan and talked me into a "new" Motorola Luge.
3. Researched the Luge, piece of crap two year old technology, rebranded Motorola M. Wanted to change phones, upgrade to Samsung S4 or Moto X.
4. Tried to buy replacement phone online through Verizon website. Could not do so without paying another $45 monthly charge.
5. Called customer service, was assured I could add the $45 for the new account I had to create in order to get the Samsung (which came with a new phone number) back on to my original account and phone number once I made the swap to the new phone.
6. Received the new S4, swapped SIM cards, S$ now has my original number, Piece of crap Motorola returned for credit, new account and number no longer needed/active, $45.00 not credited to my original account. WHAT A TOTAL RIP OFF!!
The only good thing about Verizon is the coverage. BIG WASTE of time going to talk to the imbeciles (mostly youngsters working on commission that just want to sell you stuff, not solve problems) or trying to call customer service. Obviously CS folks are either ill informed or completely dishonest!!!

If your phone is less than one year old, it is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty. I would take advantage of that and request another replacement. It's your right as the consumer to request replacements until you get a device that works, that's in the contract you signed. What's also in the contract you signed is that your replacements past the 14 day Worry Free Gaurentee period will be certified like new, AKA refurbished. Verizon doesn't hide that information from you before you sign, it's all right there in the black and white text of your contract.
As far as Verizon being unwilling to sell you a new iPhone for $199, they refused to do it because it would cost them money. When you signed your contract, you paid a subsidized price for the phone. Verizon sold you that device at a LOSS, and planned on receiving 20-24 months of revenue from your monthly plan to make up that cost. If they sold you a subsidized iPhone and put you in a new contract, they would never recover the LOSS that they took on the Blackberry Storm. You can buy a new phone from Verizon at any time, at full retail price. Buying a phone at full retail price is the only way to purchase a device that does not cost Verizon money up front.
My reccomendation? Get another Storm replacement and see how it goes. If that's still not the phone for you, look to eBay, Craigslist or friends/family for a used replacement. Prices on eBay are likely to pretty good for older models of the iPhone now that the new hotness has been released.

ArchCK: gensplash issues and logout problems

Hi,
i can't boot using gensplash anymore,my system is looking for a 640x480.cfg darch theme but it can't find it cause it doesn't exit.How can i tell my system to use the 1280x1024 one as it was used to when it was working?it seems that whatever i change it is not understood.
Second problem and possibly related is that when i logout from gnome X crash and everything stucks on my screen stupid graphical stuff comes out and have to hard reboot everytime,even without gdm running.

This may be a stupid question, but can I plug my vision+ box into a tv with built-in freeview and still get all my on demand stuff?

May I just add, that if you have one of the old silver vision boxes that also have an RF out connection, make sure that you set the RF channel to one which does not clash with the new Freeview mux channels.
I spent a good hour after the last phase of the Rowrige transmitter, trying to figure out why my Freeview TV could not get any of the BBC channels.
I finally realised that the RF output channel was sitting right on top of the BBC mux .
I changed to RF out channel to its highest setting, and everything was fine.
I wonder how many other people have been caught out by this

My 4s is dropping calls when switching towers- my 3GS did not have the same problem in the same areas?

This 4S is a major step backward for my compared to my 3GS- Less battery life, much poorer ability to switch signal types without losing the call. What are they thinking adding all these bells and whistles without making a damned battery that can get through a full day and an antenna that can handle a variable network? This stuff was solved YEARS ago by Blackberry.
I've done the location off fix for the battery- no help whatsoever. Any ideas on the tower change call drop problem?! Very frustrated that I spent $400 on this POS

...and the fact that I'm locked into this thing for 2 years is absurd when it's so flawed. What a scam.

Group Memberships not Flowing into Metaverse

Hello,
I'm trying to figure out why the group member attributes in the CS are not flowing into the MV. Here's what I have:
An HR system running on SQL Server
A staging database that extract data from the HR system
The staging database has a table representing person object
The stating database has a table representing person multi-valued attributes (i.e location, job code, etc)
The staging database has a table representing group objects
The staging database has a table representing group memberships (mult-valued)
A SQLMA connected to the person and person multi tables
A SQLMA connected to the group and group membership tables
All group memberships are based on job codes and locations. There are no approval process in place. If they have this job code, they get certain groups. That's all calculated in the staging database and the memberships are in the group membership
table
This system does connect to AD (and a few other things), but I'm not concerned with that, right now.
I've read 100 articles on this, most of them over 5 years old, and tried the ones that made sense. The flow from the database into the CS works well. No issues there.
But, a search of the metaverse for the group shows an empty member attribute. The sync process is not throwing any errors. At least they're not showing up in the sync service app or the event logs.
Where allowed, I'm using rules extensions for everything. I can't use a rules extension to set the member attribute because it's an rdn.
I'm going to move forward with this by extending the metaverse schema and adding a multi-valued string attribute named "memberOf" to the person object. Then, I'll modify my existing MA to use that attribute instead of the member attribute.
I'm not sure what kind of issues I'm going to run into when exporting that to AD. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I don't anticipate that being an issue as the dns for all these objects will be calculated by the ADMA based on locations,
group functions and person types (bascially, I don't care about the MV rdn).
Anyway, I'm looking for some real world insight on this. This whole effort is to migrate off an existing IDM system that works very, very well but quite expensive to license.

I have total control of all the DB tables FIM is accessing. I build them up as part of IDM process.
I've read this article, along the many others that address the "manager" scenario. This really doesn't apply in this case as the user and group objects are loaded in separate MAs. Getting reference values to flow with both object live in the
same CS shouldn't be an issue.
I also saw a solution where the group and user objects were in the same table and differentiated by the "object_type" value (user, group). That solution solved the issue of the groups and user being in the same CS. As I grow tired of my daily
FIM beatdown, that solution is growing more attractive. That's a major DB redesign, and seems quite inefficient.
The multi-value table for group memberships already exists in the DB. For FIM purposes, I transferred that data into the user object multi-value table. See screen shot. I can certainly configure the group MA to access that multi-value table
and load the group members as references. But, because the group MA CS will not contain the user objects, I don't see how the references will be set. If the reference value isn't set in the CS, it's not going to flow into the MV (at least I haven't
figured out a way to set the an reference value for an object in the MV - my problem all along.
This whole "setting a reference value" encompasses much more than just group memberships in my implementation. Telephone resources and physical access (key cards, etc) are provisioned through the existing eDirectory system. These objects exist
in our current IDM system and are associated with users based on rules. So, the reference value process is something I need to figure out, if I'm going to use this product.
Maybe I could use a stripped down ECMA2 as a "staging" CS, export the users and groups into this CS and assign the reference values, then import the groups back into the MV, memberships intact. I'm not sure that would get me where I want to go, and
it seems like a lot of extra "stuff" to solve what should be a simple problem. Hmmmmmm. Or, connect the ECMA2 directly to my group membership multi-value table in the DB. Hmmmmmm. I'd still have to export the groups and users into that
CS, but the import might be much more straight forward. Hmmmmmm.
The structure of my GroupMembership table (both columns are anchors or directly translatable to anchors):

ITunes 9.1 - CPU goes to 100% when playing prot. AAC - clicks and gaps

Since downloading 9.1, there are clicks and gaps when I play protected AAC songs on iTunes. Songs play fine with QuickTime player. When a protected song is played in 9.1, iTunes absorbs all available CPU.
I have followed all remediation steps in the apple.com support site including turning off sound enhancer, checking for driver updates, etc. I have also set buffering to maximum.
If I play an AAC protected song for more than a few seconds it becomes impossible to pause it and all other applications running freeze. This happens even when there are no other applications running . . . it is not a conflict problem with other applications. itunes absorbs whatever cpu there is left to take. Consistently using 60-90% of CPU w/ total CPU @ 100% constantly (when an AAC protected song is played).
iTunes works fine as long as the song is not protected.
I cannot find anything on the apple site to allow me to go back to 9.0. Why can't apple allow one to step back to the previour version? I am seriously looking at getting permanently off of iTunes. Each new release is harder to use and performs more poorly.

Unfortunately I have the same problem since I installed Itunes 9.1 anche this problem is shown in a lot of thread.....
I am seriously disappointed cause I BOUGTH these music and it's unbelieveble that Itunes doesn't play its music (sorry for my english...I am writing from Italy...).
I am afraid that it's an Intel Atom processor conflict.
I have already update everything was possible to update (driver, codecs, setting audio configuration, energy saving...) but I didn't find any stuff to solve this issue...

Firefox fills in forms at a certain website (disabled auto-fill)

After I had some problems with it (+ security issue) I decided to delete all passwords from my firefox.
When I had done this most of the annoying auto-fill-in stuff was solved, however at one website (which I visit quite regularly) it seems to keep filling in one particular username and a password wherever there's a field for either one. Even if it's just a normal field with a title it'll fill in that username.
How can I get rid of this?

10.4.3: My PB G4 is put to sleep all the time!

After upgrading to 10.4.3 I have big trouble with my quite new PB G4 1,67 with 1,5 G RAM.
Now and then it will go crazy and put it self to sleep. When I try to wake it it will go to sleep again, and again and so on. A restart can temporarily solve the problem for a while, but then - BOM - sleep again... and again and again...
Very annoying!
I have tried lots of stuff to solve this:
1. Repaired all file-rights
2. Checked the Energy savings; it will go to sleep even when I set it up to NEVER go to sleep...
3. Reset PRAM
4. Reset PMU
5. Cleared NVRAM
6. Checked the system.log, it says:
kernel[0]: System Sleep
kernel[0]: System Wake
over and over again, and no indication of why or what triggered the sleep.
7. Installed a temperature program (Temperature Monitor) to see if the computer was too hot or any sensors where broken. But found nothing, and the computer will go to sleep even when its cold.
8. Reinstalled the system twice (Archive and install) Even had problem when only using 10.4.0 - before any updates.
9. Ran Hardware test, all passed.
After all these actions I figured it was time to leave the computer at a Apple workshop, but they couldn't find anything and suggested it could be the extra 1 GB memory module. I took it out and everything worked for a while, but now the problem is back!
I then tried to start another account "test", but it wouldn't help either.
All I can think of now is that the memory module of 512 MB that came with the computer maybe is loose or something, will try to refit it tomorrow.
Or could it be the hard drive that is falling apart? (I dont have anything connected to the computer on USB or Firewire).
Am I the only one with this problem? Suggestions? Any help would be useful!

Not sure if this is related, but my 2.0G G5 PowerMac puts itself to sleep too. The differences being that it only starts happening after I have used the Sleep function once, and it started happening around 10.4.2, but it then shows the same symptoms you are seeing.
I never queried it because I don't have to use Sleep on the PowerMac, I was just trying it when found this out.
Hope you get this problem resolved, and maybe my info will help spark someones brain into life!

Productive Oracle On Linux

We are in the process to select a database server for our research data (40 GB) we have two options Linux or Solaris. I would like to know how many people are around using Linux in an productive environment of this size or larger? Are you happy?
Also I read that disc performance might be a problem. Does anybody have expierience with RAIDs (eg. those available from DELL)?

It's true that most questions are answered by other users. There
are two reasons why I think that's a good thing.
1. It's just how Linux has always worked. We police our own
ranks, fix our own stuff, and solve our own disputes.
2. I believe that #1 was a driving factor for companies like
Oracle to port to Linux. The worldwide support network
available to the Linux community is something even micro$oft
can't match. From Oracle's point of view, it's a win/win.
A user community that fixes it's own stuff and never calls me
up? That's every vendor and sys-admin's dream.....
However if there are product related bugs/issues, that clearly
have no connection to configuration/misuse, (like missing libs,
ala patch[1-3].tgz) it IS the duty of Oracle Development
Personnel to step in.

Mini 200-4200 - Hard Disk Error

Hello,
I have: HP Mini 200-4200, pr nr B3R47EA#ABU, System Board ID 338D, Win 7 (factory installed) ...what else.
I´m not very computer literate, first of all. And second, I´m in Nicaragua on a gap year - little resources around.
The Mini is under warranty, I bought it in Oct 2012, London, it´s been gradually slowing down, which I contributed to having maybe too much stuff on it.. Until, something happend few days ago. After turning on and thinking for few seconds, it makes a little "bing", and showes "Hard Disk Error", Please rund the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
When I do as it says, in a second (literally, with no thinking time), comes up:
Primary Hard Disk Self Test
Quick Test
Hard isk 1 Quick (303)
Primary Hard Disk Self Test
Full test
Hard disk 1 Full (305)
SMART check to Exit Testing
Hard Disk SMART Passed
So I press the Esc to exit and then comes up:
"Hard Disk Test" Failed.
Then I did the F10 tapping in the beginning (read in one advice post) to get to Bios:
I went to Diagnostics and pressed Primary Hard Disk Self Test. It doesn´t seem to do the test because in the same second as I press Enter, box comes with "Hard Disk 1 Quick (303)" , "ok", ...in the background I can see the Short Test Executing 0% Complete, Estimated time unknown...but I think it doesn´t do it at all. When I press the ok, nothing happens.
I´m not sure what to do. Or where is my nearest HP representative. Is there on in Managua? (or Esteli would be closer).
AND - is there a possibility to salvage any files?
Not sure if this is of any importance, when I go to the Diagnostics Log, the numbers that are listed there are 0303, 03F1, 0305. Repeating.
Please help to save my little Mini, it has been a good companion.

However - HOW CAN I SALVAGE THE INFO?
I´ve heard that warranty doesn´t cover that. But then again, if I ask a computer repairs place to do it, I risk the warranty? I´m not sure if HP allows to do it (in Lenovo the hard disk can be removed without trouble... I´m told...)
I also have additional Accidental Damage Protect Service w Pickup and Return...which I hastily did before travelling...and now I can´t remember what it covers besided "spilling the odd coffee cup" ....I can´t find any other terms and conditions other than the States version....
Any ideas how I can salvage the info?

Vista steals my disk space - how can I prevent it?

I keep upgrading my hard disks but Vista just takes more and more space. After the last upgrade Vista has now taken an additional 50 Gigs. What is going on? It does not seem to be any shadow stuff.
