Stupid Beginner Question

Just got an Imac. Have been a PC user for life and a guitar recording enthusiast.
Now, is recording on garageband this easy?
1. Plug my guitar into my PODxt
2. Use the PODxt as my preamp and connect to the back of the Imac via USB cable
3. Click monitoring on so I can hear myself play
4. Buy some Bose computer speakers so I can really hear myself play
Right?
I'm guessing I need the PODxt as the preamp. Otherwise, how would I connect the guitar to the Imac? And how would it sound any good?
Thanks.
KY

It's pretty much that easy. You may have to install a podxt driver and there are a few clicks involved but that's about it.
And there are lot's of other way to get guitar in and the guitar presets in garageband sound good.

  • Beginner Question

    Hello all, hopefully I have posted this to the correct LiveCycle board!
    I'm new to Acrobat and LiveCycle in general. I'm working out of windows LiveCycle Designer 8.x  and my question is as follows....
    I'm working off of the "Quote" Form Template and what I am looking for is a way to make the rows of the Table expand as needed.  I will be converting this Template into a "Purchase Order" form, and there will be many occassions where I will need to increase the table rows - perhaps onto a second or even third page - due to the volume of different items I will be seeking prices on at a given time.
    Long story short I would like to take this "QUOTE" form template and make it such that if needed, I can expand the table size one row at a time, pushing the content beneath (Comments, subtotal, etc) onto the next page....
    Hoping I have explained my query well enough,  Could anyone provide me a solution or point me in the correct direction?
    Many thanks!

    As a followup, so as not to clog the board with numerous threads I have another beginner question
    For the sake of hypotheticals I am creating a dynamic PDF form.  This pdf is a Purchase Order Form, with a table in the Body that will expand/contract as the form user needs.  (EXA-  Default table size is 5 items, however user is creating an order for 12 items, he/she can increase the table rows to desired capactiy.) It will be a very simple layout. All data for the form will come from manual entry, no XML data binding going on.
    My new question is as follows:    Is there a way I can have this user's Adobe reader or Adobe acrobat software remember previous data entries, so that if 4 weeks after ordering widget X he/she needs to place another order for widget X, the software will autofill the table as he/she types into the table cell?
    This would be similar to how Excel will start to autofill if it recognizes a previously entered value from some other cell in the worksheet (workbook?)
    EXA-
    [NAME]   [MODEL]   [QTY]   [PRICE]
    Widget           A            433        $30.00
    Would it be possible for the software to notice that I'm typing the word "widget" somewhere after typing "wid" ???
    Many thanks for any and all followups, I'm a teenager trying to help out in my father's small business. They are in the darkages here and I'm doing my best to self teach.
    Thanks.

  • Beginner question: Can I apply one formula to all cells in a column?

    Hi,
    I'm new to spreadsheets, so apologies for asking what is probably a very simple question.
    I want to apply a formula that divides the values in one column (W) by values in another (AX) for a table containing 3000 rows, and outputs the result for each row into the appropriate cell in the new column I've created.
    Numbers 09 'help' hasn't helped to this point.
    Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Besides Numbers '09 Help there are two other useful resources available in the Help menu: the Numbers '09 User Guide and iWork Formulas and Functions Help.
    For "Beginner questions," my first choice would be the User Guide. For the specific question you asked, a quick scan of the chapter on "Using Formulas and Functions" (pp 83-96) will provide some useful information. Start in the neighborhood of page 93.

  • Beginner question regarding 32-bit mixing and mixdown workflow

    Hello
    I have a beginner question regarding 32-bit mixing and mixdown.
    If I edit some 16Bit, 44.1kHz Stereo WAV Files and put them into multi-track view to do crossfades, how should I do the mixdown?
    Audition shows me in multi-track view, that it is doing 32-Bit mixing.
    Can I just mixdown to 16Bit, 44.1kHz Stereo without any dithering (as the files are 16Bit, 44.1kHz Stereo to begin with), or will I lose quality that way?
    I will be performing a normalization to 96% to the mixdown and then split to tracks in Audition, as in the end I want to to have an audio CD.
    I guess I could mixdown to 32Bit, then normalize and in the end save back to 16Bit, 44.1kHz Stereo WAV (with dithering, I suppose?), but I want to avoid any unnecessary converting steps.
    Greetings

    Any time you do any processing on a 16bit file in 16 bit only it will degrade the audio slightly due to rounding of the calculations. Working in 32 bit floating point (Audition's default) takes account of all bits generated due to processing.
    So it is always best to work in 32 bit, even if your originals were 16, all the way through until the last stage of saving the files for CD burning. Any losses due to conversion will be insignificant against those due to working 16 bit.

  • Beginner question - how to efficiently check if a photo is part of the selection

    Dear all,
    Sorry for this beginner question, however I don't know how to solve it and I'm sure that there is a quick and easy answer to this:
    My target is to get all the "heads of stack" (photos with Position 1 in stacks) of the selection ("photos" below).
    for i, photo in ipairs( photos ) do
      local photoName = photo:getFormattedMetadata('fileName')
       if photo:getRawMetadata( 'isInStackInFolder' ) then
       --Photo is in a stack
            local photoHeadOfStack = photo:getRawMetadata('topOfStackInFolderContainingPhoto')
            local stackPos = photo:getRawMetadata( 'stackPositionInFolder' ) -- get the position in the stack
            local photoHeadName = photoHeadOfStack:getFormattedMetadata('fileName')
            app:logVerbose("Photo nb ^1, name ^2 is in a stack with the position ^3", i, photoName, stackPos)
            if stackPos == 1 then
            -- photo is master of the stack
                 stackTop[#stackTop+1]=photo
                 app:logVerbose("Photo ^1 is top of the stack ^2", photoName, #stackTop)
                 -- check if couple if correct
            elseif photos.photoHeadOfStack then
                 app:logVerbose("Photo ^1 is in a stack, but not on top. Top of the stack already selected", photoName)
            else
                 stackTop[#stackTop+1]=photoHeadOfStack
                 app:logVerbose("Photo ^1 is in a stack, but not on top. Top of the stack ^2 - ^3 ", photoName, #stackTop, photoHeadName)
            end
      end
    end
    In the if structure in the middle checking the Position in the stack, if the Position is not 1, I would like to check if the photo heading the stack ('photoHeadOfStack') is part of 'photos'. I tried 'elseif photos.photoHeadOfStack then' and 'elseif photos[photoHeadOfStack] then' but it doesn't work ->this elseif is never true even if 'photoHeadOfStack' is part of 'photos'.
    Is there anyway to have this check done without checking "manually" photos ?(via for example a for Loop)
    I'm sure that Lua proposes this, but I don't know how...
    I thank you for your Support!

        --[[ This code creates "stackTops", an array of LrPhotos that are the
        tops of all the stacks containing photos in the array
        "photos". ]]
    stackTopSet = {}
    for _, photo in ipairs (photos) do
        local stackTop = photo:getRawMetadata ("topOfStackInFolderContainingPhoto")
        if stackTop ~= nil then stackTopSet [stackTop] = true end
        end
    stackTops = {}
    for photo, _ in pairs (stackTopSet) do table.insert (stackTops, photo) end

  • Beginner Question: SA520 Admin access through WAN port

    Dear all,
    I've a beginner question regarding my brand new SA520: How can I configure the box so that I'm able to access the admin GUI not only through the LAN ports but also from the WAN ports?
    I tried already to allow inbound traffic to the firewall's internal IP address (not sure if done right, so) and granted the admin user access profile from WAN and LAN: I can access the box from the LAN but not from the WAN. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Eric
    PS: Yupp, I know that it's not a good idea to expose a FW admin GUI to the WAN - but this is only a lab environment

    Go to Administration -> Users.
    click on the 'Edit User Policies' 'Login' button.  It's there you can enable WAN access.

  • Beginner question - using pre for flexibility in text?

    Hi,
    Apologies for the beginner question, but I am struggling to work out whether it is more sensible to use <pre> in all my texts, as it seems more flexible.
    It seems that when I use <p> - paragraph - I can't use multiple space bars to align certain bits of text, but more disruptively I have gaps between text when I press Enter (I guess this defines the paragraph, but isn't always wanted).
    Well, basically, <pre> seems more flexible, but it behaves strangely sometimes. What do other people use?
    Many thanks!
    Ivan Reshetilov
    http://www.ivanreshetilov.co.uk

    Hi Ireshe, just a beginner like you.  Have never heard of <pre> tags, use <p> tags.  If you hit SHIFT enter after a sentence this puts in a <br> tag or line break which basically leaves a blank line between text.
    If you add     &nsbp;    or lots of them between words this gives you an extra space between letters.  How all your paragraphs sit on the page is defined by CSS.  E.g.
    p {
         margin:0;
         padding: 5px 0 0 10px;}
    This would place all text within <p> tags on your page, with a 5px gap at the top, no space to the right or bottom and 10px space to the left.  Hope this helps, good luck!

  • Beginner question: Configure Tomcat for JAAS?

    Hi,
    This is a beginner question :-(. I'm trying to get JAAS to work on my Tomcat (6.0.12) installation. I used code from a Javaworld article (http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-09-2002/jw-0913-jaas.html)
    Of course I had to configure my Tomcat to work together with JAAS. The document I used is: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/printer/realm-howto.html
    According to the Tomcat doc I have to do the following steps before I can use JAAS to authenticate a user:
    1. Develop your code. Place the compiled classes in Tomcat's classpath
    2. Setup a login.config file for Java, and tell Tomcat where to find it (set JAVA_OPTS)
    3. Configure the JAASRealm in your server.xml
    1 Develop code: I use the following classes:
    PassiveCallbackHandler.java
    RdbmsCredential.java
    RdbmsLoginModule.java
    RdbmsPrincipal.java
    These classes I put in the package rdbmsjaas.
    In the %CATALINA_HOME%/webapps/Javaworld_Jaas/WEB-INF/lib directory I created the rdbmsjaas.jar file.
    The jsp is called jaas.jsp, and is stored in %CATALINA_HOME%/webapps/Javaworld_Jaas
    2. Setup login.config
    In %CATALINA_HOME%\conf I saved the file Javaworld_all_that_Jaas.config, containing:
    Example {
       RdbmsLoginModule required
       debug="true"
       url="jdbc:mysql://localhost/jaasdb?user=javauser&password=javadude"
       driver="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver";
    };I created an XP Environment Variable JAVA_OPTS with the value <-DJAVA_OPTS=-Djava.security.auth.login.config==C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat 6.0/conf/JavaWorld_All_That_Jaas.config> (excluding < and >)
    I used the fully qualified address, instead of $CATALINA_HOME/conf/JavaWorld_All_That_Jaas.config. I think XP balks when it sees $CATALINA_HOME).
    3 Configure JAASRealm in server.xml
    In %CATALINA_HOME%\conf\ I changed web.xml. I added the following lines:
          <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.JAASRealm"
                 appName="jaas"
                 userClassName="rdbmsjaas.RdbmsPrincipal"
                 debug="99"
           />If I run the jsp from http://localhost:8080/JavaWorld_Jaas/jaas.jsp, I can enter my username/password, but when I click the Submit button, I get:
    Caught Exception: java.lang.SecurityException: Unable to locate a login configurationWhere did my configuration go wrong?
    Abel

    You will need a JSP/servlet engine such as Tomcat - Apache alone won't do it.
    I haven't seen any tutorials on set-up but the Tomcat documentation includes info on how to link to Apache. There are also books you can buy - check out the online book stores such as Amazon.
    There's also a lot of info on this forum.

  • Beginner question: creating my own virtual instruments from samples

    Hi, I have a beginner question. I'd like to make a click-track, but I want to use my own sounds, either recorded or from the internet. Can I do this with Logic Express 7, or do I need Logic Pro 7 and the EXS24?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    I think you can do it, but it might be a pain.
    You could import a sample of a single click and just paste it into every beat on the Arrange Page.
    Other than that, you might need the sampler included with Logic Pro

  • Stupid simple pre-beginner question

    Can't quite figure this out. Phone is what I consider talking to someone on the phone.... So, are texts, reading the NYT, finding internet data time also considered phone? As in, do all the minutes I spend doing anything (other than, hopefully, listening to music) count in the minute allotment that I get per month? Also, is there a way to track minutes? (This isn't an issue with my current phone.) Thanks.

    if your plan is like mine...the minutes you're alotted are for talking only. data usage is when you send txts and access the internet (remember, just cuz you don't necessarily download something, it's still usage. it's measured in megabytes (i have 1000 MB on my plan). when you're listening to music, playing - SOME - games or doing anything that uses a program you downloaded previously. (somes games have ab online portion) it doesn't count against any usage - you already 'paid' to download it so now it's free to use.
    so for me: telus is my carrier; SHAW provides WiFi at home. When I download or surf at home, i'm using wifi so it 'costs' nothing...when i talk i am accessing telus so it goes against my minutes...if i check my email while i am walking down the sidewalk, it costs me usage through telus - so many MB cuz wifi isn't around. but when i play a game waiting for my doc appt. - unless it's constantly downloading or accessing the internet, it's free.
    i'm sure you will get a much better explanation but that's how i always explain it when complete strangers stop me and want to see my iphone.

  • Stupid beginner animation question

    So I have a background map, and I want to draw a ship on top of it. Problem is, when I load in my jpg and stick it on top of the background, the jpg is a square. It makes sense... the jpg doesn't know that I only want my what isn't black. But is there a way I can easily get rid of the unwanted portion of the image?

    Make it a gif with a transparent background.

  • IMovie and iDVD, Stupid Upgrade Questions, Sorry Must Ask

    Okay, the deal is I have a PowerMac G4 Version 2.1 with a Combo Drive. I am upgrading to Mac OSX 3.0 so I can do certain things in iMovie and acquire a better browser. (My constraints on the iMovie project about which I've been inquiring are that at least 40 people have been waiting for copies of it for about a month and wondering why I don't come through with it--I sent a lengthy explanation to the guy who'll be duplicating it in case anyone asks. That's one reason I'm in such a hurry I have to ask urgent questions at forums and newsgroups and don't take the time to read every word ever written on every one of these systems and their various applications, abilities, and uses.)
    I started out thinking I was about one step from having a completed project and the more I learn, the more grim the situation looks. Yet I've done ALL THIS WORK already to create beautiful titles and elaborately-edited outtakes. I HATE to ditch it all if any faint hope flickers into sight!
    My Mac came with the following:
    iMovie 3.0.3 -- which seems to be working fine, only problem is, due to deficiencies in other equipment, I'm having trouble getting my movie to DVD or into any other form where it can be played anywhere outside the Mac!
    iDVD 2.1 -- My feeble brain, inadequate as it may be, has so far gathered the information that to go to DVD, a project can't be played in iMovie and sent straight to a DVD burner (can it?) There has to be some intermediary step. (Right?) People have argued the various merits of iDVD vs. Toast to accomplish this step. I hadn't opened my copy of iDVD because I am in no way near the point of being ready to make a DVD--I have not yet finished editing the project in iMovie. I made the hideous error of ASSUMING that since this came installed in my Mac, it would work fine when needed, just as iMovie did. When I tried to open it just to see what version I had, it wouldn't open and told me this:
    System Requirements
    iDVD 2 requires a PowerMac G4 computer with 256 Megs of RAM, a built-in DVD-R Superdrive and Mac OS 10.1.3 or later.
    Stupid redundant bonus question #1: WHY would this come installed on a Mac which lacks the hardware to use it? (iMovie could still be used to edit, and then copy projects--if I had a digital video camera--which I don't. The only other way we've figured is to send it back through the Canopus ADVC110 converter I used to get the video in there, and play it out to a VCR--a cumbersome process I've been assured will result in crummy quality.)
    Okay, here are the REAL questions:
    1. I don't suppose there's any way the Canopus could be connected to the DVD burner and the information sent to a DVD that way? Just asking.
    2. Obviously the upgrade isn't going to fix things to make iDVD work, as I'm already using Mac OSX 10.2.8, so I would assume its discontent stems from not having the Superdrive--at least, it was complaining something about inadequate hardware and I think that's what it meant. Will connecting a DVD burner via FireWire convince iDVD to work (either automatically or after some sort of tweaking), or am I stuck replacing the drive? I bought a DVD burner the minute I realized my drive was a Combo Drive and not a Superdrive (which is the first time I stuck a blank DVD in it and nothing happened) before learning details about this intermediary step and that there is more than one way to accomplish it.
    3. Is it even worth replacing the Combo Drive with a Superdrive or is it more worth buying a whole new Mac? If I am FORCED to buy a new Mac, what should I do with the old one? (Not only am I ethically opposed to tossing a perfectly good piece of electronic equipment into the ravine, I might get fined for littering. Can a good home be found for it? For that matter it would be a pain as I've saved all sorts of stuff to the Hard Drive which would have to be transferred to the new one before I could get rid of the old one. So can I keep the old one...PLEASE?)
    4. After making the system upgrade, will I be able to bypass iDVD entirely by using Toast, or does Toast also have all sorts of requirements my hardware does not possess so I'll still be SOL, stuck replacing drives or even the whole Mac, or going directly to crummy-quality VHS as there is NO OTHER WAY OUT?
    5. After making the system upgrade, would I be ready for more advanced versions of iMovie and iDVD? Are any upgrades free, or does every improvement cost? Do I get them all at the Apple site, order some of them from some supplier or other the way I did with the Mac OSX upgrade, or what?
    Thanks for helping to clear up my massive confusion!!!

    Wow, thanks. It's good to know iDVD is still an option, even if I don't buy the Superdrive (is that even possible, to get the Combo Drive taken out of my current Mac and a Superdrive put in? There's a question still unanswered.)
    (I think this is good to know--because part of my reasoning in asking the question was to eliminate one option or the other, and now I'm ending up with options of options, but hold on for Part 2 as I do have some questions concerning the capabilities of iDVD and Toast.)
    Partly answering one of my own questions (although I'd appreciate confirmation from someone who actually knows,) if these Toast 7 requirements mean what I think they do, I don't see anywhere that it says the computer MUST have a Superdrive and CAN'T use an external DVD burner!
    Toast 7 Titanium
    Requirements:
    * PowerPC G4 processor or faster (G5 recommended for viewing DivX files on your Mac)
    * PowerPC G3 processor and Mac OS 10.2 users, see Toast 6 Titanium or Popcorn
    * Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    * 300 MB of free disk space to install
    * Up to 15 GB of temporary free disk space during usage
    * QuickTime 7 or later
    * CD or DVD burner and recordable media
    If this is true (that I can use an external DVD burner) I like Toast already! My Quicktime Player is only version 6.5.2--is it going to be difficult, expensive, or both, to upgrade that? If it is or the other System Requirements are not met I can just go with Toast 6.
    As far as those requirements, I promise you I don't understand a word of it but here is what my System Profiler says my Mac has. Maybe someone can make sense of it and help me decide which version of Toast to get or, if not, what to do:

    One thing which may really sway me in favor of Toast is, will it make possible burning 2-hour DVDs? Supposedly iDVD will not enable anything longer than 90 minutes, and when I get to the other big project for which I really want to use the Canopus ADVC 110 converter, that is, converting my home movies from either VHS or 8mm video camera tape to DVD--well, ALL of my tapes are two hours long, because that's the way they come!! I don't see being limited to making 90-minute DVDs as anything but another GIANT PAIN of which I'm already amply supplied! So if Toast will fix this dilemma I'm ALL FOR IT!
    As always, thanks for help and advice.

  • Beginner question: support to HTTP POST om Oracle AS

    Hi!
    I don't know if this is a suitable forum but since i use JDeveloper and Oracle BPEL I'll try my luck here :).
    I have a Java web application built in JDeveloper and a couple of BPEL processes.
    In these processes I use Java embedding (a piece of Java code) that opens a connection to a given URL and post a XML message to this URL. I didn't have much problems creating these processes.
    Now I have to provide a support to HTTP POST on my side. Since web application and services development are quite new to me I hope someone can point me the right way to do this. The requirements I have are: I can have a single URL to which the http POSTs will be issued.
    If I understand correctly I cant use a web service since I have to enable different types of XML posts. What are my options? Can I create some kind of listener for http POSTs? Can I create a jspx that will 'wait' for http posts and than call some of mine BPEL processes? Is there a way to create a BPEL process that 'waits' for http POSTs? Are there other options.
    I'd really appreciate any pointers on this.
    Regards,
    BB.

    Frank,
    I've tried creating a Servlet listener that implements HttpSessionListener interface. Now I have two methods, sessionCreated and sessionDestroyed but I don't know where to go next. I can't find any documentation on this issue yet.
    Should I create a jspx page with form node that has method attribute set to POST or maybe I don't even need a web page? I already have a login page that has a form with method set to POSt, will this pose any kind of troubles for me?
    I apologize for any stupid questions but as I said I have no experience in doing this and las couple of days I'm searching and reading different documentation on this topic so any more pointers would be appreciated.
    BB

  • Beginner question: support to HTTP POST at Oracle AS

    I tried same post on Application Server - General forum, but had no success.

    Frank,
    I've tried creating a Servlet listener that implements HttpSessionListener interface.
    BB

  • Total Mac Virgin with a stupid, simple question:

    There are no stupin questions, just stupid people, so here it goes. I'm trying to post an image on MySpace from iPhoto. I rotated it 90 degrees and it looks right in iPhoto, but when I upload it, it's ****-eyed. Someone please help. I'm a GenX'er but I feel like a geezer having to ask for help.

    Hi, fellow GenX'er.
    A couple of things could cause this. First, in which application did you rotate the image? Some apps, like Preview, don't change the source file, but rather tag the image for display. So when you export you see it unrotated. Rotating in iPhoto does create a rotated file which will look correct when exported. As long as you haven't done it in Preview prior to import, that is.
    That get us to the 2nd possibility. How did you access the file when uploading? If you went through the iPhoto library files, you may have taken the wrong file. The Original may be unrotated, the Data too small... the edited version is in the Modified folder. Instead of grabbing from the library, it is recommended that you select the image in iPhoto and File > Export > File Export to a folder on your desktop, then upload from there (trash the desktop copy when done). This ensures that you are choosing the correct, full-sized, edited image. When exporting you also have the option to resize for a more web-appropriate file.
