Stuttering JPEGs

I was doing finishing tweaks on this 20-minute video comprised of 150 JPEGS generated in Photoshop CS2. All were scanned prints except for a few scanned negatives. Having gotten everything else where I wanted I was still being plagued with stuttering stills. If one were to slowly scroll through one of these clips you could actually see the image jump--fairly rhythmically--a pixel or three. I tried deinterlacing but that did nothing. I was at the end of my rope; some were pretty egregious.
For whatever reason I double-clicked one offending stills and looked "under the hood" in the Motion tab. Hmmm, Time Remapping; I have no idea what time remapping effects but it sounds like it might have something to do with something so I clicked on the little triangle to reveal its parameters. "Hmmm, nothing there looks to be impactive of anything. Nevermind, look somewhere else."
But before I could, I noticed in the timeline--mind you, the timeline that moments before had been fully rendered--the clip I had just checked had a green "unrendered" bar over it. "Why would that be?" I thought. I hadn't done anything to it. So I rendered it. While I waited for the render I started thinking, "hmmm, I wonder if..."
Sure enough, to my massive amazement, that clip, when played back, was smooth as baby's butt. The stutter had vanished! I went down the line to find the next stuttering clip. I click the Time Remapping submenu in Motion, did nothing to it, and saw that once again the clip had a green bar over it. I rendered it and once again the stuttering was gone. I did the same thing to about 30 clips or so; same procedure, same results.
Now...crazy right?...why would this work? I didn't actually DO anything. Please, can someone explain!?
alan b

Well, sure. And with little muss or fuss. Certainly I am thankful for that. And I hope someone else with this problem sees this and it works for them as well.
However I am a logical animal and this makes absoutely no logical sense so I just hoped someone could give insight. It was a purely accidental occurance that would have no applcation in solving other nagging issues that are sure to arise in the future. I mean we're talking 1s and 0s, bits and bytes. How can somethng just "happen"?
It just drives me crazy, nomsayn?

ps--btw in case someone thinks to chime in suggesting my FCP might be buggy, I just two weeks ago did a clean reinstall of my entire system And FCStudio.

  • Stuttering image pan

    Hello,
I have seen and looked over several different threads on this subject, but I have not yet found a solution that works for me, so I thought I would try myself.
I have created a simple image pan for a project I am editing for somebody. I have tried creating this pan both in Premiere Pro CC 2014, as well as After Effects CC 2014 (both fully updated), and each time I get the same problem - the pan comes back stuttering instead of smooth.
I have tried adjusting the frame rate, the original image size, I created a camera parented to a null object and panned that layer rather than moving the image itself (in After Effects), I incorporated motion blur, and at this point I am not sure what else to do. It is possible that my problem is in the export specs, and it's even possible that the problem itself is in playback rather than in the file itself (I have watched the file on both PC and Mac, windows media player as well as quicktime and vlc).
The project for which I am making this animation is a 1920x1080 24p project, but I have tried making this animation at not only 24fps but also 30 and 50 fps, just to test out options.
I have tried exporting to a quicktime movie with a png video codec, a photo-jpeg codec and a mpeg-4 codec, at about 85% quality, though I have tried other options as well.
What I want is, I believe, simple - it is a six-second pan from left to right, resulting in smooth movement with clear, legible detail on the map while it's moving. I think maybe I am just over-complicating it. I don't know anymore.
I have included a link to the after effects project file and the latest export below. I did also try just panning the map using the motion effect in premiere pro (since the larger project that includes the map is, itself, in premiere), but that was no better. Any advice?

  • Stuttering playback

    Hi
I am editing in a ProRes LT 422 time line using ProRes LT material 1920 x 1080p. This is on a Mac pro Quad-Core Xeon with 6GB DDR3 and a 4TB esata stripped raid, using OS x10.6.4 and Final Cut 7.
I have been suffering from intermittent playback issues since this project started, it has been inconsistent whole sequences playing through perfectly then not. Changing the RT and quality does make a difference but again not consistently.
Then I started to look at the front slate which is made up of a B/W jpeg and several layers of none animated text. this is the only material in any of the sequences that was not prores. Re formatting them as a prores movie and limiting the layers to two levels of text appears to have stopped this stuttering. But I am not convinced that its that stupid! has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour is my fix a real fix or am I missing something else.
    Thanks in Advance
    Steve

Moving from LT to SQ did not help the issue. To explain a little further playback actually stops on this slate in multiple sequences @23.98fps and then will affect the playback of any other media in the time line. Swapping sequences will sometime reset the playback, sometimes not. My issue is that this is a Prores LT project as prescribed by the client, changing the setting is not really an option. What I really want to understand is why this jpeg still and text layer can affect things so badly. The jpeg is not corrupt; I have tried resetting the user preferences that made no difference.

  • Pan/Zoom of Jpegs & Tiffs on FCP: not smooth, bad resolution, artifacts..?

I'm running FCP 6 on an old G5 with 2Gigs of Memory. I'm trying to manipulate still photos for a personal project and the quality is not good. Simple zooming often causes a "stuttering" of the image during movement. The images are not sharp & clear and there is a moire effect as the scan lines of the picture zoom. Certain pixels sometitmes seem to take on a life of their own-showing intermittant black and white pixel frame-long dropouts.
I've applied de-interlace, deflicker, gauzian blur, all to no avial-and the pictures get blurred.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

FCP does a lousy job if there is massive scaling involved. Best to resize in Photoshop to the smallest pixel dimensions that will work with your movements.
    Stay away from jpegs.
fwiw - re image flickering -
The flickering is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text or titling. This can also be the case in images with great deal of detail with high contrast as well as when when you are engaged in pan/zoom moves on stills.
As the alternate fields play, the flashing element is essentially being turned on/off. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Before you start any of these steps listed below, make sure you are viewing your material on an appropriate monitor. If you are working in an NTSC/PAL interlaced format (eg DV) you need an external TV monitor - not a computer screen. Without the appropriate device, you are playing blind.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
    • (in FCP) field order>none
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
    • (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
    • (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
    • (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned images
*Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind.* The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
One final thought, if you have slowed your material significantly, and have not used some sort of frame blending/optical flow processing, you may be simply duplicating frames to create the additional material to pad the playback. The flashing/stuttering you see is the result of this.
    good luck.

  • Technical Photo-JPEG question

I am doing a project where a client has provided me with 400 Photo-JPEG files. (stock footage from Digital Juice). They load and playback just fine in a sequence that was created using the Make Sequence button.
I was informed by a knowledgeable person that I should not use Photo-JPEG and should have converted all the clips to a QT  movie format (Prores or whatever). The only limitation I bumped into is that the clips wont accept metadata, but that is superfluous for this edit.
The time spent doing that seemed probibitive but I just wanted some technical experts from the forum to confirm or deny what I was told.

The only reason you would convert this to ProRes or an intermediate filetype is if you were having performance issues, i.g. slow playback, stuttering, excessive render times, etc...
Converting to ProRes or any other intermediate filetype introduces another conversion which degrades the original files with each conversion. Since Photo-JPEG is already a lossy format, you really don't want to compress those files again, unless you really have to.  Anytime you can edit with the original format throughout a project it will give you a superior quality in the end. You have less time converting files. You lose less quality due to filetype conversions and multiple compressions. And generally the original file size is going to be substantially smaller than the intermediate codec.

  • Stuttering playback un camvas

I have a bunch of stock HD footage I downloaded from Artsbeat.
when I import the file into FCP 7.0.2/10.6.4 playback from the timeline in the canvas is not smooth. It stutters.jerks.
I have taken all the graphic tags off of the clips but i still get a general error message when rendering.
4gig of RAM, PCI express outboard 7200 rpm hitachi enterprise class drives.
Does not stutter in Media Composer 5
    Thanks
    gary

Is this the free Artbeats stuff?
Those clips typically use Photo JPEG compression. It's not really a very good codec to edit with.
Convert them to ProRes and change your FCP Sequence settings accordingly.

  • The new Canon PowerShot TX1 and the "openDML JPEG codec"

I like to buy this camera, so I download some sample HD videos.
This camara use "Apple openDML JPEG" AVI codec, but I can´t configure the finalcut sequence whit that codec.
I can open the videos whith QT, and no problem, but I can´t edit this videos in final cut.
I don´t like to convert the videos to another codec, because i lost a lot of time whith that.
    Can you help me?
Thnak you very much and sorry for my bad english

Log into another user account on your Mac, create a similar slideshow in iPhoto there and test to see if it stutters.
By fixes I'm referring to these three:
    FIX #1
    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
    Fix #2
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Stuttering Motion files in FCP

    Hi there,
When I'm using Motion 3 files (compostion with JPEG's, DV-PAL 16:9) in FCP the movie is stuttering. In FCP and after exporting (QT Animation). Also there is a interlacing problem...
Can anybody tell me what I can do to solve the stuttering problem? Is it because my FCP project is 25fps and my Motion project properties are 30 fps? I don't know how to change them. When I look at project presets its on 25 fps...
    Example of my 'problem': www.vlijmscherp.tv/test1
    Thanks in advance!
    Martijn

I think the fact that motion is 30FPS will have something to do with it... i would consider redoing to motion work at 25 FPS to match FCP and see if that helps.. a bit vague i know but thats where i would start.

  • Stuttering animation

I have created an animation in Flash 8 with a lot of pictures
and sound. The animation is serious compressed (jpeg's to 30 and
audio to 48 kB/sec) and is now 315 kB including the preloader. The
compression is done by Flash when you save the .swf file.
Some users sees the presentation good but others sees a
stuttering animation. The problem occurs in IE and Firefox, so it's
not browser related. The stuttering begins when the word
'gezelligheid' is coming on the stage. Normally when the animation
works as expected the music is done when the animation is done but
because the stuttering this is not working.
    You could see the animation
here and if you would you could
    download the FLA
    here
I'm surprised what the reason is of this issue and how to
    solve it!

I had a look at your movie.i don't experience any stuttering.
But the animation of the letters are not smooth.because of
the frames allowed for each text is very low .Try to smoothened the
    text animation.
The opening of the door look brilliant!!!

    ImageIO.write((RenderedImage) bufferedImage, outExtension,saveFile);

  • IOS 8 - Photos app bug - "stuttering" effect on Year view

    Hi Folks,
On the iPhone6 Plus 128GB with iOS8.1.3 (with 15000 photos inside several years go), I notice that when using the Photos native app in the “Year view” (yearly mosaic view), if I scroll up or down slightly fast, the scrolling that you get has a little “stuttering” or “jerking” effect, so the UI is not perfectly smooth in this view inside Photos native app.
Have you noticed it in your own iPhone's with iOS8.1.3. and also having a huge size photo callery as I have (>10000 photos spread in several years)? (I think that is it very important, because if you have not a huge photo gallery, probably you will not see the “stuttering” or “jerking” effect that I am describing).
I think this is a bug which impacts iOS User eXperience, which needs to be fixed.
    Thanks by your feedback!

    Hi Guys!
Any experience to share with us, please?
    Thanks!

  • 10.6.8 MacPro Bluetooth stuttering

    Problem description:
After upgrading to 10.6.8 and after some minutes working I realized my keyboard input was faster than the text appearance on screen. Sometimes I push a key on the keyboard and three or more times the letter appears on screen. Then I noticed the mouse movement on screen was stuttering, not constantly, but sometimes more, sometimes less; but no serious work possible. If I switch off Bluetooth and switch it back on, I have a few minutes for normal behavior of my Magic Mouse and keyboard, but then same problem again. Urgh.
    What I've done so far:
    - Repaired permissions
    - Deleted both devices from the list of known Bluetooth devices and registered them again
    - Deleted the bluetooth.plist
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Reset the SMC
    - Installed the Combo Update for 10.6.8
    - Switched the channel of my Wireless base station (tried every single possible channel)

    Hi Sven,
I guess I found a solution that works (so far...):
    - deinstall all your blouetooth devices
    - delete everything saying bluetooth in library/preferences
    - reinstall 10.6.8 as combo update
    - reinstall your bluetooth devices.
    Best,
    Björn

  • Since updating Firefox as suggested, when I 'save as' a jpeg, it automatically finds the folder and it's always the wrong folder. How can I disable this feature and go back to the original mode where it remains in the folder I choose until I change it?

For example, I saved a jpeg named 'picasso the guitarist'. I have folders titled A to Z. When I click 'save as' it might open the 'K' folder and I have to manually search the 'P' folder for 'Picasso' and save file. The most irritating thing is, when I 'save as' another jpeg of say 'pieter mother & child' it goes to another folder and does not remain in the 'P' folder, rather it goes to the 'X' folder or some other. This didn't happen before the last upgrade. Can I disable this new 'help' feature that is taking more time than the old version?

Current Firefox versions remember the download directory based upon the URL, so if the URL changes then the default folder may be chosen if there hasn't been selected a download folder before for that server.

Bug 536503 - Last downloaded-to directory should be remembered on a site-by-site basis
Firefox 11 will have a workaround by providing a pref (browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite) to disable this feature.

  • When creating a DVD face in Photoshop 13 my save options are limited to .PSE and .PDF.  Why can I not save as a jpeg or other file format?  This was never an issues in Elements 10 (my previous version).

I just recently purchased Elements 13. I am in the process of creating a DVD face for a video. The design is complete and I would like to be able to save it as a JPEG so I can use it in another program that prints my DVD's. The problem is that it only allows me to save the file as at PSE or a PDF. No other options are available. Why is this?  I upgraded from Elements 10. In Elements 10 I have never had a problem saving this type of project as a JPEG.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

    ANSWER FOUND!
Once I finished composing my question I went back and spent some time to figure out the problem. Rather than choosing the "save as" option, which doesn't work, or attempting to choose "export" (grayed out), the correct option is to choose "export creation", which is near the very bottom of the initial drop down options. That works!  I still think it would make sense to have it as an option in the "save as" area.

  • How to set jpeg resolution when saving pdf file as jpeg

I'm running Acrobat using interprocess api, I can invoke a script to save a pdf file as JPEG, but I need to be able to set the resolution of the saved jpeg file.
Any clues as to how I can do that ?
    Peter

    Hi
I am running a stand-alone version of Framemaket 10.I try to convert a documentation with a lot of screenshots in it. Regardless of the settings on the Reference pages of the first document of the book, Framemaker converts all graphic files to *.gif, and these are downsized so much that they become illegible. I would like to have them converted to JPG, with little resolution loss, so they are still readable.
I think Robohelp is too expensive…
