Subclip Madness - Convert from FCP

So as it says in the title, I have made the switch from FCP to Premier, like many others. Overall I am pretty happy as the findamentals seem to be the same, also I am getting deeper into AFX so
the inergration is definitely nice. However I have started my first full on project with Premier and the way I usually edit is:
1] Import footage, I usually have atleast 500 - 1400 clips, I shoot using a DSLR.
2] I organize all my clips into relevant bins.
3] I then make subclips out of each main clip - removing excess footage I dont need or stuff that I think isnt good enough leaving me with the best possible video content for me to pick and choose from while I edit.
4] Build my timeline etc etc etc
You get the point.
Now the first issue I am very concerned about which has already been mentioned in the forum is the lack of a "remove subclip limits" option in Premiere. What this does in FCP, is basically if I for some reason need to extend
or resize my subclip, I can "remove its limits" and then go ahead in doing so, I did this a lot, it was very helpful.
In Premier this is not present, anyone from FCP with a similar workflow run into this issue? Perhaps you have come up with some kind of workaround or something, if so please share.
Now my second grievence, basically everytime I create a subclip, instead of just appearing below the main clip, it appears as the last clip in the bin, so I have to scroll all the way back up and relocate the main clip in order to see
if the subclip was alright or if I want to make more subclips.
Sometimes the clip will appear outside any of the bins just by itself and I have to hunt it down, this is really frustrating and this alone is making me actually look at video reviews of FCP X even though I know I will probably never use it.
I have tried changing the ay the window with all the media is arranged, by name, label whatever, this keeps happening.
Help, before I throw a large object at my monitor.
Thanks in advance.

Scene detection is not really going to work for me because I film music concerts. When I am shooting the live performances, I shoot several clips from several angles for a 4 hour show.
I then end up with 100's of clips for a show, the scene detection would work if I had one long piece of video or a tape.
Also @shooternz
I figured that out, however it is extremely buggy. When I do indeed change the media start time, I can extend the size of the clip, however if I for some reason delete the clip and then drag the subclip back to the timeline I cannot then resize it, and if I try to change the media start times again, it shows the previously altered start time and then doesnt affect the subclip on the timeline at all regardless of the star or end points.
Also when I do create a subclip, it goes to the bottom of the bin, regardless of the sorting, may it be by column or whatever, this is immensely frustrating as I have to keep scrolling all over the place.
Also one really annoying thing about premiere is the fact that if I want to preview something, like a clip/subclip/audio file, I have to click the tiny little icon/thumbnail on the left hand side of its name or title, I often miss the little icon becuase I edit quickly and clicking anywhere else will open up the dialog box for importing footage, this again is a real peeve.
Dont get me wrong, I want to like Premiere but the deeper I am getting into this project the more I am finding tiny issues with Premiere pop up.

This took about 7.5 hours.  I exported the audio separately as AC3. Finder plays it sound & pictures.  Quicktime plays the video.  DVD Studio Pro, when I drag the assets (video, audio) to the timeline editor, so I can play it in the viewer, it plays the audio the video is black.  No setting in view or any other setting will get it to play the video.  This project is due to ship today and I don't want to re import it if I don't have to.
I exported this project before the MPEG2 export as a Qicktime with .mov suffix.  This plays alright, but there is artifacting around motion.  I think this is due to low VBR, but don't know.  Can ayone help?

    If I may chime in...
I'm a little confused on the "what plays what" part, but  all that really matters is what DVDSP sees/plays.
I've worked on a system like yours and what I'd recommend is:
    1. NEVER export via Compressor. It's just ungodly slow on anything less than a Quad. Export a self contained QuickTime Movie using the first export option and use that to feed Compressor.
    2. Segment your output into manageable clips (I like 15-20 minutes) both to perfect the encoding and so you aren't re-encoding the whole show if something goes sour. It will all play fine as long as it's all in the same DVDSP timeline.
From what you describe, I'm thinking you're on an early version of Compressor that had A-Pack as the AC-3 encoder. This is no biggie, I mention it mostly to verify. Early Compressor was good too.
Make maybe a 5 minute piece to tune up. Just export as normal, then into Compressor. Your encoding values seem about right. Get the AV pair into DVDSP and it should play. I'm guessing that part of your problem is that the processor is fighting to handle the project size. Build the test clip project and look at it in DVD Player to view what would have been burned. If all looks OK, go for it. If not, bring back the results for discussion. This should be a snap, it's just a really big project.  Keep your head up, I had a friend do a 225-minute disk on his G5...

  • .mov file from FCP, what's the next step to convert it to play on a dvd?

I have a project save to a .mov file from FCP and it looks great. It was shot in 720 HD but my dvd won't play .mov files.
I'd like to either convert it to an .avi or mpeg file now but after trying a few times through QT Pro and even Mpeg Streamclip, the footage is either pixelated or is too choppy to play on my dvd (Samsung HT5500).
What are the best settings to convert a HD .mov file to play on a dvd so it looks great. What software should I use for this... QT Pro or Mpeg Streamclip?
    TIA,
    Dale

    DVD Studio Pro.
And you can't make a DVD that is HD; DVDs are standard definition. You can make Blu-ray discs with a Blu-ray burner and Blu-ray player, but you DVDs will only be 720x480.
Convert in Compressor with a preset for DVD, and import that into DVD Studio Pro.

  • Subclip import from fcp studio

is it possible to import subclips from FCP 7 projects into FCPX?

reading further in the 7toX instructions, contrary to your comment, they say
Translating a Final Cut Pro Project
To translate a full Final Cut Pro project:
    Make sure there is nothing selected in the Browser;
Choose the File menu and from the Export submenu select XML…
When imported into Final Cut Pro X after translation, the bins will be translated to keyword collections, based on the bin name. Log notes and other metadata will be in the Notes field for each clip.

  • Does anyone know of a way to export a .gfx file from the FCP 7 timeline? If not, do you know of a plug-in or even a stand alone video converter that will accomplish this? I can convert FROM gfx, but cannot convert TO gfx. Thanks.

Having a problem with files that are exported from FCP and delivered to Master Control. They are then

Thanks neuroanatomist. That was really helpful, but when I went in and looked in my SMS folder, I opened it under notepad and it was all garbled and hard to read. It didn't look like in my iphone of indicating conversations between me and another person. I could see my conversations, but they where all mixed in with numbers and weird characters I've never seen before. You wouldn't happen to know of another program out there that can put it perhaps like in a word doc. or even excel sheet? Something that's just organized. Thanks.

  • Compress to SD DVD from FCP 7.0

I have a project in FCP 7.0 that is made up of ProRes 422 (LT) footage that I just finished. I'm trying to get this to DVD. The footage is 1440x1080 30fps. Everything looks great in the time line. I've exported it to Quicktime twice using these settings:
    ProRes422 1440x1080 30
    ProRes422 (LT) 1440x1080 30
They both look pretty bad. Lots of jagged edges.
I tried to "Send to" Compressor and used the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes settings for the audio and video. I imported this into DVD Studio Pro and after burning the DVD it's the same thing. Actually before I even import it into DVD SP it looks bad so I guess it's not anything that DVD SP is doing.
The footage is only 16minutes long.
Am I doing something wrong on my export? Do I have to de-interlace something or change a setting? Help would be much appreciated.
    Steve

You could try duplicating that 90 minute preset so you can make a few adjustments. One of the settings I modify in my m2v presets is in the Frame Controls: Resizing Control: Deinterlace. I have that set to Better or Best, depending on the video. I also set the Output Fields: to Progressive. This seems to work well for my DVDs even when down converting from HD.

  • Importing audio from FCP

Is there a way to import audio projects from FCP into logic keeping the automation that the video editor has made?
Is there a file format other than OMF that contains the automation. and can FCP export it and can logic read it?
Is there a 3rd party application that can convert?
Or do I have to go back to the bad old days of Pro Tools (or worse, Soundtrack "pro")? PT LE is limited for soundtrack production, isn't it?
Is there anyone doing serious audio post production on logic, and if so, how are the projects imported?

The problem with exporting to AIFF, is that you can't crossfade between your cuts, or normalize regions. Your just stuck with the FCP raw mix. This is OK if your cut is relatively simple and you've already crossfaded and blah, but if you've got all kinds of dynamics going on, and different types of recording, you're definitely going to want more control over the export.
The problem with OMF, is that it doesn't translate well into LP. This seems to be a regular thing coming up on threads, apparently it works better with other audio editors but not LP. I've found that despite specifying handles on my export, non appear thus making crossfading impossible, you just get the same glitches your trying to eliminate.
HOWEVER the great thing is that apple invented their own format XML, an apple interchangeable file format. If you import this to LP, you get REGIONS like in FCP that reference the original files on your HD, which means you can now CROSS FADE, and NORMALIZE.
That makes me happy. I like it.

  • Making a .mov into .flv  (or exporting from FCP as flash)

I'm trying to get some short movies I made in fcp into captivate. Captivate requires the video to be flash. I have fcp 5, Adobe CS2 (no flash, I dont think), and compressor.
I tried changing the extension file name; it played on my qt player, but once I imported into captivate, it wouldn't play.
Anybody have inexpensive ways to convert h264 or any mov file from fcp into an fla?
I have this sneaking suspicion that I have the tools on my computer, but just can't find them.
Do I have to buy CS4 and learn flash? I'm going to do a lot of this- and while I'd prefer to find a free way right now, I only want to purchase once if possible.
    What's the best way?
    thanks!

You can try encoding with MPEG Streamclip!
It´s easy... and most of all... IT´S FREE!
Google it "MPEG Streamclip" download the Mac version... voilá!
There are other online solutions... try www.mediaconverter.org... but if you need to control a few parameters streamclip it!
    HBars
p.s. it´s not directly from FCP... export a reference clip and do it!

  • What is the best compressor setting to use ... when exporting a 720p timeline from FCP for a project that will only be played back in a standard def monitor?

What is the best compressor setting to use for DVD StudioPro ... when exporting a 720p 30 timeline from FCP for a project that will only be viewed in a standard def monitor?

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Need quick solution! QT Movie export from FCP not right, client breathing down neck...

I am working on a project in FCP 6.0.6. The footage is ProRes, 1920 X 1080, and runs about 50 minutes. Some graphics but minimal. Plays back great in timeline. I export a QuickTime Movie (reference movie) but when I play it in Compressor, the video suddenly jumps ahead about five seconds at the 36:00 mark. The audio continues as normal, but now, of course, audio and video are five seconds out of synch. Made multiple attempts to export from FCP, but I keep getting the same result.
I have a feeling this may be a QuickTime compatability issue, but I can't compress for Web or DVD until I figure this out. Not finding anything in discussions at Apple or Web.
    Other pertinents:
    24-inch iMac, 2.4 GHZ
    4 GB RAM
    OS 10.7.5
    Assistance appreciated.

Thanks for your comment, Michael, but I actually solved the issue last night. Shane had asked earlier about whether I had any H.264 clips, and I did not. But last night I remembered that when I first created the sequence, I had dragged in an H.264 clip before I converted them all to ProRes. So I realized that although my clips were all ProRes, the sequence itself might still be set for H.264. Checked settings, and sure enough, compression was on H.264. Changed it to ProRes, re-rendered, and I'm rolling again. Thanks, Shane, for planting the seed on that one.

  • NTSC to PAL - Export straight from FCP or use an mpeg file?

    I was reading this
    http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreate.html
however it does not mention what to bring into compressor.
Should I export my ntsc sequence straight from FCP into compressor, or should I drag an ntsc mpeg file I aldeady made into compressor? Ive been trying the latter but can't do much as each step gives me the spinning beach ball for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks much.

Yes, you should export directly from FCP Using Compressor. Exporting to a heavily compressed MPEG-file, and then converting that from NTSC to PAL makes no sense. You would want your video to go through as few conversions/generations as possible.

  • Converting From NTSC to PAL

I have produced a DVD with FCP and DVD SP4 in the NTSC format. Now I need to produce the same video in PAL. What is the easiest way to do so??? I have all the original files.
    Thank you

    [email protected]

One way would be to recompress the video using Compressor and the original final edited movie files (The ones you exported from FCP as a Quicktime Movie).
After you select the preset in Compressor, change the Video format to PAL. It probably was originally set to Automatic.
In DVDSP, if you have background assets you made specifically to NTSC sizes, you'd need to re-create them in PAL dimensions if you want to do it right.
I haven't done this so I can't tell you how well this works quality wise. I know there are some expensive options outside of the Final Cut Studio suite. You may as well try Compressor since it will only cost you some computer time. If its quality doesn't stand up to your standards, then you can look elsewhere.
BTW, you may want to ask yourself if its even necessary to convert. Most PAL DVD players can play NTSC DVDs. I send NTSC DVDs to Hungary (a PAL country) all the time and my in-laws have no trouble using them. They certainly don't have any high end equipment either.

  • How do you stop DNG Converter from embedding Adobe's ACR default settings instead of custom settings?

I notice that the new version of Adobe DNG Converter (8.6, and maybe earlier) appears to place Adobe's ACR defaults in the converted file.  Thus, the converted files open up in Bridge with an indication that they already have settings made, and, hence, ACR does not apply the custom camera settings.  One has to Clear Settings first in Bridge, then open in ACR.
This behavior is new, perhaps to 8.6.  But it's presence defeats the purpose of having custom Camera Defaults.
Is there any way to prevent DNG Converter from installing settings?

    ssprengel wrote:
What do you mean by “custom camera settings”?  Do you mean you’ve changed the Camera Raw defaults for a particular camera and those aren’t being seen until you do a Reset?  Or do you mean some sort of Nikon-settings that Adobe never looks at?
Also at what point in the workflow are you converting these files, just after copying them to your hard-disk and before touching them with any other Adobe software, or after they’ve been adjusted in Nikon software, or after they’ve been adjusted in Bridge/ACR, initially as NEFs?
I mean my custom camera defaults that are set by the Save New Camera Defaults for a given camera.
My workflow is to take my original raw files first into Adobe DNG Converter.  I then open the folder in Bridge.  At this point I notice that my original raw files remain unaltered (there is no "settings" icon in the top right corner – circle with two lines and up-arrows – in the image's thumbnail), but the converted dng's (otherwise untouched and unopened in ACR) have a "settings" icon.  When I open the original raw file in ACR, it opens using my custom camera defaults.  When I open the otherwise virgin dng in ACR, it opens using the Adobe defaults (the same defaults that would be employed if no custom camera default had been set).
This behavior is new.  DNGs formed by earlier versions of the DNG Converter did not apply any settings to the converted file, and when they opened in Bridge, they were given the custom camera settings.
In order to retain the old (and proper) behavior, I now have to take the just-converted documents into Bridge, select them, and immediately apply Develop Settings/Clear Settings.  That gets rid of the settings that have been installed by the DNG Converter (as well as the "settings" icon on the thumbnail).
I notice there is a new feature in Adobe DNG Converter 8.6, namely, a panel-specific toggle between the settings and the default settings. This indicates to me the likelihood that Adobe has been making some alterations with the settings that is having unintended consequences.  It clearly is not proper for DNG Converter to be adding (installing) settings, because that prevents the custom camera default settings from being applied, and hence defeats the purpose of the custom camera default settings.

  • How do I convert from PAL to NTSC in compressor?

I have a project I converted from mp4 file to Apple Pro Res to edit it in FCP.  I exported using Compressor and tried to import the files to DVD Studio Pro.  It said it can't put PAL files into an NTSC project.  I didn't even realize it was filmed in PAL (yes, I have the rights to use the footage).  How do I convert the files from PAL to put it into FCP...in Compressor?  If so, how?  Thanks for any help!

To  convert the 25fps PAL file to a 29.97fps file staying within the ProRes codec:
    • Open up compressor. In the Settings window select: Apple>Formats>Quicktime>ProRes 422
    • Select the "Duplicate Selected Setting" icon in the upper left of the Settings window
    • This creates duplicate of the preset that you can edit
    • Select the preset copy and, in Inspector, give it a new name (something like ProRes PAL>NTSC)
    • In Encoder>Video Settings>Frame rate - and change the frame rate to 29.97
    • In Frame Controls> turn them on and set Resize Filter and Rate Conversion to BETTER.  (If so set them to BEST, be prepared for a long wait)
    • In the Geometry tab, set the Frame Size to 720x480 (you don't say if the file is 16:9 or 4:3)
    • Submit the file and go have dinner. Depending on the length of the file, it may take hours.
    Have fun.
