Suddenly ceasing up!

Suddenly my G5 iMac has decided to go slow. After about 10 minutes of usage in any program, the mouse becomes so jerky, it is almost inoperable and when I run an application or play a video, everything is very choppy. Also since this has been happening, my internet, (dial up), connection keeps dropping. I have not added any new programs. I have repaired permissions numerous time and run various repair programs like Onyx and Main Menu. Can anybody please help.

Well, I realize I'm in the minority in suspecting a memory leak, but I'd suggest you reboot your Mac, and start up Utilities > Activity Monitor and watch what happens to memory consumption over time -- first with nothing else running, and if that doesn't change, then with your normal programs running.
It is very odd that the machine requires 10 minutes to start misbehaving -- although that could be a temperature-dependent hardware issue as well.
Temperature dependency can be tested by rebooting when the Mac becomes slow, and seeing if the freshly rebooted Mac is just as slow. If it is, then it's likely a thermal issue; if not, then it's more likely a software issue.

Export all tracks as audio files in LPX has suddenly ceased to function correctly

I have been working on a project for the past three months, which requires me to work from home ,then export all my tracks as audio files and take them into another studio. This is because my collaborator's DAW of choice is now Nuendo. So far, this has proved to be a very successful approach to our workflow, until today. As an example , I have a cue with 96 tracks. When I came to use export all tracks as audio files, the usual window came up, defaulting the destination to the bounces folder in the Logic song. However, this time, instead of the expected and correct number of tracks to be saved ( 96 ) , the total was 25 !
I tried this with a few other recent Logic songs and the same thing happened. None of us can figure it out. I had to manually, and individually, bounce each track separately, which was very time-consuming. A clue, though….. I tried exporting the tracks one at a time. So, the first one was, say, piccolo rips. It did that fine . The second track was Alto flute runs, but when I came to export, Logic seemed to think it was still the piccolo rips! This implies that the reason why I'm experiencing reduced export files is because Logic is thinking that many of the tracks are actually duplicates, so it's stopping them from being exported. That's the only explanation I have. However, I don't have the answer to the reason for this. I'm running the latest version of Logic.
Has anyone clue as to why this has suddenly started to happen and how it can be fixed please? I'm thinking I might just trash the Logic app and reinstall.

First of all you are welcome...
I have to say... I suspect something has changed even if you are not directly aware of it.... between the time it did work and now that it doesn't for you... Be it for example... an update to a plugin you are using.. or even a new/different plugin you are using now that you didn't use before...
I checked with one of my clients a few minutes ago, who does regular, several times a week, large project stem exports to see if he has ever had or heard of such an issue ( in case it one of those odd bugs that only rears its head every now and again..) and the answer was no, not at all...
So all I can recommend is to create some testbed projects.. using different combinations of Plugins, creation of tracks methods.. templates etc.. until you uncover the root cause of the issue... because i suspect it may well be something unique to your system, config or work method that is causing this problem..
You might also want to check with the guys at

..and see if David, Jordi, Eric or one of the other regulars there, have ever come across such a problem.. I did a quick cursory search there and found nothing at all but it was a very quick look/see type of search...

17" Apple Monitor ceased to display, how can I test it

My 17" Apple monitor suddenly ceased to display. I can't see what I'm doing! It has the two USB ports occupied by bluetooth and usb speakers both of which function ok. The power light behaves as normal. Is it possible that the actual display matrix can have gone? Is there any way that I can test or check it to assess what the problem is?

Hello, and thanks for your responses. Its a 17" LCD screen.
When its connected the power light on the front is on permanently and does cycle through any sequence.. I'll try and check it again re the dimmed desktop when I reattach it again to test it out.
I guess I was wondering if it is possible to short out any circuits when attaching a USB 2 device to a USB 1 port as on the back of the monitor. I wouldn't have thought so but I'd be interested to know if anyone has any other input. This was the only change to my set up was when I attached my LaCie USB speakers to the usb port on the back of the monitor. They worked fine for a few days and then one day the screen wouldn't function.
Thanks for the link to the forum but it appears that the monitor I have is of the older variety of cinema display which uses the ADC rather than the newer models which may have a separate power supply. If I could check this monitor on another mac then I could maybe do a wee bit more analysis but due to the ADC connection then its not so easy to find another MAC of that vintage which has the ADC monitor connection on it. Also having to pay around £70 for and adaptor ( http://store.apple.com/uk/product/M8661B/B ) to allow me to connect it up to a powerbook to test it seems a bit much when the monitor may be worth nothing if it is completely dead.
I'll continue to try to resolve and understand this as I don't want to just dump the monitor if it is just a relatively minor issue to be resolved. Any thoughts are gratefully read.

Dock ceases to work as it did before

My dock has suddenly ceased to work as it did before.
It used to appear on moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen, and the icons would magnify as the mouse was passed over them. Now this does not happen (though the dock can be obtained in other ways).
After reading up on problems people had had with the dock, I went to library/preferences and deleted the files beginning com.apple.dock, then restarted.
This has not brought the dock back to how it was. It still does not appear on mousing over and does not magnify in the correct way. Yes, I have re-set the dock preferences.
It's an iMac ruuing 10.8.2.

I've fixed it now. The solution was to unplug the mouse transmitter and plug it in again. Very strange.

Option + arrow keys suddenly inserts new columns

This happens frequently when I work in Numbers.
When I shall edit text in a cell, option + > and option + < all of a sudden cease to work. Instead of jumping to next or previous word, a new column is inserted.
I don't know what causes it. I haven't found another solution than closing the document and reopen it.

I always edit text directly in cells and option + arrow keys normally jump to next or previous word.
Yes they are greyed out for me too.
I just noticed that if I by mistake press Cmd + return (instead of option + return) when I want to edit, it causes option + arrow keys to insert new columns. I can revert to normal by placing the cursor in the formula bar and using option + arrows. After that option + arrow keys jump to next or previous word also when I edit directly in cells.
Thanks for telling about using the formula bar. Now I don't have to close and reopen the document.

Can no longer send or receive iCloud account messages in Mail on my iMac

Simply that: On July 14, I hadn't been in Preferences or Settings, but Mail suddenly ceased to be connectable. No sending or receiving since then. While I can access my iCloud mail through a browser, there are too many negatives to that method. e.g., I don't like lack of default composing preferences: why should I have to go through the font/size/color/ each time I write an email? But every time Mail does work, it "imports" more than a million messages -- per the Activity Monitor -- though they are certainly not all there (thankfully). I don't think Mail is "all there" since Mavericks. But I don't want to use gmail any longer.
Would a TimeMachine restore of Mail back to July 13 fix the settings issue as well, or just the doesn't need fixing messages part?
Is Apple's upcoming Yosemite likely to fix Mail's myriad issues? It seems as if MountainLion was mostly good, but suddenly there was/were Mavericks and several things were not the same. And not in a good way!

Well, mine now is, oddly enough, but there was a point when it worked again, and before I had a chance to say "hooray" it went out again. I have screen shots of the various account settings windows so I can refer to them if it happens again; I figure I can check the settings and if they have changed themselves -- cause I for sure am not going to change a thing since they are now working -- I can put them back where they were at the time Mail actually worked for my iCloud account.
Still, what a hassle. And ironic, that I can deal with my gmail account in Mail! But my intent is to switch to iCloud for my mail, since I do not like gmail's lack of sorting options, and some of Google's policies.

Can I use a SCSI hard drive in a SCSI CD-ROM enclosure?

I have an external SCSI hard drive which has stopped working.
It has been going OK for some time, but has suddenly ceased completely, i.e. the light doesn't even come on when I plug it in.
I'm guessing from this that it may be the power supply that's at fault - which is good, because there is data on the drive I need to access.
My question is, can I simply transfer the drive to a SCSI CD-ROM enclosure and access it from there?
The reason I'm not just sucking-it-&-see is that I really really don't want to risk frying the drive, because some of the data is not backed up.

The vast majority of those jumpers have to do with SCSI addressing. Each device on the SCSI Bus needs a unique address. The Controller takes #7, the built-in CD takes #3, and the built-in drive (if present) is most often 0.
If you can reverse the jumper-block built into the case, you may be able to get the number dial to work. If not, you can ignore it and set the address semi-permanently with jumpers directly on the drive. There appears to be more than one set on your drive, just choose the most accessible set and use only those. It's the setting on the Drive that will determine the address, not the case.

I don't use Acrobat SDK, i make PostScript-programs for the var.data print, f.e. labels with wire name, numbers, barcode etc.; Distiller plays role RIP, carrying out the program.
As a data source at execution of these programs files of various formats can be used: ANSI/UNICODE text, binary (f.e. PhotoShop-RAW data), PostScript (f.e. «print-in-file» from Illustrator) file and others. The same programs can write what or given on a disk (tmp-files), for example the pointer to the data in a source file or the debug information.
For me has surprised that in 8 Acrobat'е all it has suddenly ceased to work, though in early versions and ghostScript all is fulfilled correctly. I have assumed that obviously developers had been limited possibility of data write/reading a disk and, most likely by a TEMP-folder. However even in the TEMP-folders setted by means of a variable %TEMP% of write operation at execute of PostScript-program by Distiller it was not possible to make. Also attempt to read/execute a file which is in a TEMP-folder was unsuccessfully completed also.
During search in the Internet I have found article specified above ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/downloads/Acrobat_SDK_readme.html ) in which it is underlined possibility by default operations of file I/O in a TEMP-folder, however impossibility it to make contrary specified in this article, have forced me to write to this forum so it is read by Acrobat developers.

'User failed to respond' (error -8) - a serious issue that needs attention

Based on the various posts here it is becoming increasingly apparent that, in most cases, this is not a user defined issue related to incorrect router settings/port configurations etc..
There also appears to be a fairly conspicuous correlation between upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.7/Qtime 7.1.2 and the onset of problems with iChat. It is particularly notable that many people have been using iChat successfully for some time and that it has all of a sudden ceased working despite no manipulation of parameters related to network access (other than those associated with the 10.4.7 software upgrade of course).
In summary, it appears that that the 10.4.7 upgrade has rendered iChat inoperable (possibly through altering the nature of communication with wireless routers? I have’nt noted if anyone with hardwired connections have been experiencing these problems).
I am not an expert in this area, so apologies if I am stating the bleedingly obvious (or, at the other end of the spectrum, if I'm completely off the mark). Nonetheless, this appears to be a serious, global issue that is affecting an increasing number of people in the same way despite having different routers, ISP's etc.. and it is something that needs addressing.
Is there anything in the pipeline on this yet? Or is it still being handled on a case-by-case basis, which, while appreciated, has not been successful in any way thus far.
Some sort of formal response re: what steps are being taken to correct this would certainly be appreciated by many it appears.

I strongly agree. I have had nothing but trouble with iChat since I upgraded to 10.4.7 & QT 7.1.2 (error -8, not responding...). I can still chat to other buddies running Tiger, but no longer can chat to buddies on AIM PCs or buddies running Panther -- buddies I have been chatting to for more than a year without a single problem.
I also tested against the automatic clients on Ralph John's great website: appleu3test01 works fine, rjinwipc doesn't.
I have tried using the 10.4.7 combo update -- no luck. I have even tried reverting my iChat & its libraries back to 10.4.6 using Pacifist. Same problem. Alas, I am on a group wireless router that I am not allowed to administer, so I can not try any of Ralph's port opening tricks... So, short of reinstalling the entire OS, I am stuck.
Given the large number of people who are reporting this erorr recently, clearly, the 10.4.7/QT 7.1.2 updates have broken iChat for many, many people. Apple needs to step up and:
1) acknowledge they have broken something
2) build a "revert to 10.4.6 installer", as they did with QT a few months ago.
3) publish an official workaround (if the port opening works)
4) give us a timeline for a patch ASAP

Iweb keeps crashing on me, has since early july

I've been trying to to publish our iweb pages ever since mobileme was launched. in july the publish all or public page option would result in a "publishing error" message. Then in early august the iweb program would just crash completely. now iweb is crashing my whole computer it's also causing a kernel panic. this ***** since all our web pages and blogs have not ben published for over a month now does anyone else have this problem?

I've had a similar publishing problem ever since the introduction of MobileMe. I had built a fairly extensive website and not one part of it would upload. I kept getting that frustrating 'publish error' message with no explanation. Emails to Support resulted in a couple of replies that helped not at all. When I continued to ask for help they stopped replying. In desperation I deleted my carefully-built unpublished website and started from square one, designing one page at a time and clicking only 'Publish to MobileMe', not 'Publish All to MobileMe'. And would you believe: it work! It's a slow and laborious business, but I'm up to nine pages now, and the uploads are still going through, if very slowly with slightly more complex pages. I can only conclude that the multi-page site of my first attempt was too much for MobileMe all in one go.
Having said all that, only this afternoon one of my earliest pages (which contains some 14 images) suddenly ceased to show a single image on either of my Macs. In hope of overcoming this I resorted to clicking 'Publish All'. It took two hours for the full site to re-upload, but all the images are in place.

Help!! N85 with no call sound

Hi, my N85 has all of a sudden ceased to have sound when I make a call or someone calls me BUT, if I use the loudspeaker, it works.
I took it back to the store I bought it and a salesman had the same problem and Nokia told him to update the firmware. So, I have done that, to no avail. I still have the problem.
Any ideas??

It looks like you have a faulty earpiece. This is a hardware problem, not software. An update will not fix it.

The find function in my calendar is not working.

I am running your Yosemite on a new MacBook Pro. The find function in calendar has suddenly ceased working. If I search for a name or an event even though I know it exists that name or event is not found.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Orphaned Web Galleries

I've been trying to use a web gallery to sync collections of desktop pictures between my macs. On one Mac, I assemble and publish the gallery. On the others, I subscribe. Nice, normal and simple, right?
Unfortunately, when I've tried to update my gallery, there have been a number of times when some kind of error was encountered. No error message is displayed, but the gallery suddenly ceases to exist in iPhoto. The old version is still up on .Mac, but the iPhoto version is just gone and I have to re-publish from scratch. Anyone have any idea how I can prevent these galleries from just popping like soap bubbles?
I've had similar problems on the subscription side. Sometimes the subscribed mac will update correctly, and sometimes it will just forget that there was a subscription.
Any ideas on how I get this to settle down?

Seems that protected galleries don't like to be updated. And I found that I could delete the orphans by going throught the preferences for iPhoto and deleting the web galleries from there.
