Suitability of Arch as a basis to OSE-specific Linux Build

The guys at Open Source Ecology are considering the creation of a custom Linux distro to suit their needs:
Any thoughts on how easier it would be to use ArchLinux instead of Ubuntu or Fedora as a starting point?
From http://openfarmtech.org/index.php/OSE_Linux_Build :
This build would contain:
Prenstallation of all mission-critical software:
Blender
QCad - CAD, Architecture purposes
Kdenlive
Skype
Linux CNC (this would require a dual boot installation where back versions of Linux are installed. For example, LinuxCNC works on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, but not on Ubuntu 9.10. Whatever distribution of Linux is chosen, we need to make sure that LinuxCNC, one of the critical components of CNC machining - is accommodated
Arduino Environment for programming the Arduino microcontroller
Stereolithography file viewer
Preinstalled libraries and Other Design Libraries
QCad libraries for design files, house designs, other purposes
Library of Pattern Language Icons for symbolic modeling of integrated agroecotechnological systems.

WOW! very nice! gonna keep an eye on it, I'm very interested in agroecology, bio-construction and FOSS!
well, I think you must check the dependencies of the core softs, specially their versions...
Since Arch follows rolling-release, only the latest stable versions of packages are in the repos (with some exceptions...). That can be good or bad, if the program have an active development, it's probably built with the most recent versions of libraries... and so it's easy to build them. If it's not so active, then maybe u have to patch sources, etc... but with ABS and AUR, it's not hard to install different versions of libraries, and also it's easy to build new packages from source and keep them up-to-date ( with the newest features, that sometimes is very nice in open-source, as programs evolve sometimes very fast). So, what I mean is that Arch is very flexible, and very simple to adapt and tweak. I would recommend it. ( I haven't seen informations about these apps you mentioned, sorry...I'll do as soon as I can.)
edit: some errors, poor english, u know....

  • Is it suitable install Arch Linux on a USB key?

I want to install Arch Linux on a USB  key following the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _a_USB_key
But I now heard that Arch Linux will be very very slow than LiveUSB because of USB's bad I/O speed. Is it real?
Forgive my poor English, thank you!

Actually I spent some times to study USB, and I concluded out that it is relate with USB's performance, as example, USB 3.0 is better than USB 2.0, SLC is better than MLC.
So the better performance of USB the more suitable to install Arch Linux. However, it will costs me much money to buy expensive USB:)
@Mr Green What's your blog? Is this http://archbang.org/?

  • Arch 0.5 base install patchset jc

Finally I went through with what I intended.  I've created a new, not-official, totally unsupported (unless you catch me in a good mood) base install cd.  I decided to call it the jc patchset.
Currently it has support for dvorak keymaps and can install a custom vaio-skas kernel (with built-in acpi support which should work for most vaios and anything else that needs acpi on bootup).  There are a few extra things that are needed upon install (most of them are documented).
The one big thing that isn't mentioned is that the vmlinuz image (if you decide to install the vaio kernel) isn't called /boot/vmlinuz, but /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-vaio-skas.  Just remember that when configuring grub/lilo.
Here's the link, until I can convince apeiro to give me my own directory on the ftp server... http://www.archlinux.org/~jason/arch-jc/

The basic idea is to (1) copy the whole Arch Linux CD into a folder on HD, (2) replace the packages with latest, (3) make a new package list and check / edit any scripts if needed (e.g. /arch/setup), (4) compile everything into an iso file with mkisofs command, and (5) burning CD.
Currently I don't have my computer with me (I am traveling) otherwise I could have given the details (especially the mkisofs formula). I will post later if needed.

  • Problems installing Arch 0.7 base on SATA HDD.

Hi! I am new to Arch and still a bit of a newbie when it comes to Linux in general. I have a friend who runs Arch who has been trying to help me... to no avail. I am trying to install Arch base 0.7 with an ftp installation on my system. Some of my system is as follows:
P4 3 GHz, 1024 memory. My HDD setup is:
Primary IDE Master: [NOT DETECTED] (No drive here!)
Primary IDE Slave: [Maxtor ide drive] Files
    Secondary Master: [Samsung dvd-rom] (ATAPI)
    Secondary Slave: [CDRW] (ATAPI)
Third ide Master: [SATA-HDD] OS's Windows and Arch
My Linux partitioning is as follows:
    sda5 /
    sda2 /boot
    sda7 /home
    sda6 swap
My Grub file looks like this:
    Linux
    root (hd1,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda5 devfs=nomount ro
    windows
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
(I have left out the coad for the title line in this forum)
My windows loads perfectly but I have troubles booting into Linux, when I add quiet to my Kernel line I get this at bootup:
    Booting command-list
    root (hd1,1)
filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root (etc....)
    [linuz-bzimage, setup=0x1c00, size=0x3d08535]
uncompressing kernel... OK, booting the kernel.
ACPI: Unable to load the System Description Tables
and then my system stops loading, reset button to restart!
My friend is a bit of a Linux whizz but he was unable to help me out... I have changed my fstab to look like sdaX... (he told me to)...
    Any suggestions?
    thx

    Similar problem here.
    Pre-partitionned my single HDD which is a Sata 80Gb, with sda6 5Gb for Arch, sda9 /home & sda11 swap.
Installed Wombat which recognized the HDD on /dev/discs/disc0, adjusted the conf files as if i was going to use hotplug.
Installed Grub on to the "/" (sda6) partition as I plan to add others distros.
Also  installed Grub on a new ext2 formatted Floppy with :
    umount /floppy
    /usr/local/sbin/grub --batch <<EOT
    root (fd0)
    setup (fd0)
    quit
    EOT.
When I boot with that floppy, grub recognize HDD as hd0 and "/" as 6th partition : I can TAB to "vmlinuz26 without a glinch
Then it boot ... untill I get this message :
"sata "kernel panic - not syncing: vfs: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)""
Should I edit /etc/rc/conf with some more modules/daemons that those by default ?
Presently I'm copying my Arch mirror (current & extra) on to another partition to get last packages. Because my box comes with an ULi network controller that was added to the kernel modules early in October, so I want to chroot into my present install, update to latest kernel, udev, dbus & hal, & see what I can do thereafter.

  • Help me buy a new computer suitable for Arch

    Hello all Arch users.
About 1½ years ago, a mate convinced me to try out Arch Linux. It was about the same time as I also bought myself a TFT monitor. I've grown rather fond of Arch since then, and refuse to use anything else (except at work where I have to use Windoze).
But I've also been having some eye-problems for the last year or so, and I'm blaming partly my Phillips 190S monitor, and partly backlight/brightness settings in Arch, which I have been unable to change. Last thursday these eye-problems accelerated and gave me so much trouble I was unable to use a computer or TV or even go outside for days. I can't live a life that boring! :-|  I have to be able to use my computer 25 hours a day.
I've searched a bit on the forum and found that I'm not the only one having some eye-problems with Arch. One solution apparently is to use xbacklight command, which just doesn't work on my system. I found another graphics-card which I tried, but it used the same drivers, so still no xbacklight command. Anyway, I don't want to make a big story out of it either, since I've decided to buy a new computer and monitor now. I want a low-noise system anyway, so....
The monitor will be some expensive stuff that should be very kind to the eyes, so I'm pretty sure that part can't be better. But should you have a recommendation for a great monitor that's kind to the eyes, do share.
I'm thinking that the hardware otherwise might not be compatible with Arch for reasons I'm sure I wouldn't know about. Also, I'm interested in knowing if there's any graphics-cards that suits Arch better than others. And finally, my Arch system is a little broken, and a fresh install probably isn't a bad idea. (I'm no Linux hardcore user, but I definitely know I prefer any Linux distro over Windoze).
So I decided to put down the stuff I'm thinking of getting, and maybe someone will tell me if they know of any problems with that hardware and Arch, or maybe recommend me something else.
    MSI G31M LGA775 1333FSB Bulk MAT G31M, 4xSATA

    Samsung S223 DVDRW-SA/18/18/8/SATA
    Samsung 250GB SATA II Harddisk
    NorthQ NQ-6803 52-in-1 Cardreader
There's no graphics-card on that list, because there's a built-in one one the motherboard, and I don't really need it for games, but rather system-development and such. But if you believe that a certain graphics-card will improve picture quality, or be more kind to the eyes, then do tell me. (I doubt it, but if you think so, lemme know).
Any other advises regarding brightness and be-kind-to-your-eyes-stuff is also welcome. So far I've installed www.sharpfonts.com, but it's too soon to say if it helps.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the answers.
I'll definitely look into that flourescent lighting thingy, although I think/thought I had enough light around me already.
I have also tried having brightness at 0, and even contrast at 0 also. Also using the nvidia settings.
Anyway, it would seem I've found one of the reasons. Apparently, for some weird reason, Arch hasn't offered me 60hz, but rather lower odd numbers such as 53hz. So I've been using a rather lower frequency, which logically should explain at least some of the reason.
While Windows lets me go as high as 75hz with this current 17" monitor I've tried instead of my 19" monitor, Arch won't even let me have 60hz. I've tried various xorg.conf settings, and even got one mailed to me which doesn't change anything. So that's two monitors I've tried where Arch doesn't deliver the hz I want, but where Windows does fine and more. That can't be right. I'm using the nvidia drivers, and have tried two graphics cards.
I'm buying a better monitor regardless though, something that's extra kind to the eyes somehow. I'm thinking 19-22" with some fancy techniques to reduce whatever it tough on the eyes. Maybe a fresh install of Arch will help getting the hz needed. I need to do that anyway on the new computer.
I also tried booting Ubuntu from a CD to check how that seemed, and while the Ubuntu desktop and fonts did seem more calm and eye-friendly, I must admit I'd been looking at it too much at that time to be sure I wasn't just kidding myself.

  • How dangerous is to use Arch as the base of webhosting servers?

Hi all, I am wondering this because I want to build my webhosting infrastructure using archlinux, but I wanted to know, what pitfalls should I expect from doing this?
Will the rolling release model eventually become to dangerous for this kind of business? or make the infrastructure very hard to mantain? I just want to hear your toughts about this.
thanks in advance for the help

/dev/zero, thanks for your input, what its really making me consider this is the fact as a general rule, if you want a rock-solid system, you can't have the lastest programs and updates, however in my case, I see Arch defying this rule every day. I have installed arch on many machines by now (say about 5+ and I have used them all for extended periods of time) and I have experienced some hiccups regarding updates, but those tend to be big updates big userspace applications (say from Gnome 2 to Gnome3), on the server side applications (apache, mysql, ssh server, etc), I have never experienced any problems, thats was leads me to think this kind of setup could provide customers cutting-edge features while in a stable environment.
Please correct me If im wrong
Yeah, I don't think I can give you a definitive answer, and maybe one doesn't exist. It seems like you know your way around, so I guess you just need to decide for yourself whether you think you can manage the risks.
I mean, I certainly don't want to be seen as saying: "Arch is bad for servers". Probably, it will work fine. It's just that, for servers, I'm not sure it would stand alone at the top of my list. It might be second from the top, or there might be a tie with one or more other options that need trading off against each other based on things like stability, commercial support (as murffatksig said), etc.

  • Arch-0.6-base.iso: request for 'pcmcia' package

    Hello,
I use my pcmcia Wi-Fi card on my laptop to access my router-to-cable-modem internet.  Would you please consider adding the 'pcmcia' package to the 0.6 release of the 'base.iso'.
Would these requests be better made as a bug-report in the tracker?
    Thanx.

OK, I've been mulling this over(can you hear the metal-on-metal scraping sound in my head?).  If the base install is, as it has sometimes been refered too, for getting a 'base(ic)' install up-n-runing, then, how do most people get their various dial-up/pcmcia/PPPoE/etc.. systems installed?  Is it simply inferred, that, people need to have these packages already available on another CD or local NFS/FTP share?
I was under the impression that the 'base.iso' is for a quick install, followed by completion over a broadband connection(?).  What are the other ways people use it?
    Thanx.

  • `pacstrap -i /mnt base` fails because of linux 'leftovers' [SOLVED]

    Hi,
In the process of trying to install Arch (on Acer Aspire V3, UEFI Bios, dual-boot with win 8.1) I accidentally skipped the step of manually creating a configuration file to add an entry for Arch Linux to the gummiboot manager. As a result I could not boot into arch and also failed chrooting into it. I then tried to wipe out the linux partitions (root and home) and reinstall the base system, but after wiping them out and loading again arch from the live USB and running
    pacstrap -i /mnt base base-devel
    I got the following error:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    linux: mnt/boot/vmlinuz-linux exists in filesystem
I tried looking it up online but the only similar thing I could find was the Beginners guide entry saying I should run:
    pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux
I ran it but it didn't help me.
    I also ran
    efibootmgr -B -b <number>
to delete the linux entry but that did not help either (i.e. the linux entry is gone, but I still get that error message).
I'd like to wipe out any remaining 'leftovers' of the old linux installation and make a new one, without damaging my windows installation (which I assume should mean without wiping out the EFI partition).
    How can I achieve that?
Last edited by rangel (2014-02-25 09:45:31)

I have root and home on two separate partitions. I wiped them by deleting the partitions and making new ones using cgdisk. According to this I mounted the EFI system (which is on a separate partition, which came with the win installation) on /mnt/boot using:
    mkdir -p /mnt/boot
    mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/boot
I assume (but not entirely sure) that I should delete whatever's left in the EFI partition, but I'd like to do it 'surgically' and not wipe it out (so as not to damage the win installation).

  • JDev 11g update 1 base edition on windows: error building default domain

    Hi all,
(refer to [url http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3168105]here for original post)
I'm posting this again with some more information. When downloading the Studio Edition (Base - no JDK) version of JDeveloper 11g update 1, an error occurs upon first (and each subsequent) startup of JDeveloper (error details below).
    Tests that I have done:
1). Install using JDK 6 u 11 - JDK did not show up automatically in the installer, had to browse to find it and select it. Running using 6u11, 6u10, and 6u7 (deleting the system directory after each try) - error occurs.
2). Install using JDK 6 u7 - JDK was automatically found by the installer. Running using 6u7, 6u11, and 6u10 (deleting the system directory after each try) - error occurs
These errors do not occur when using the Windows installer. For information: my machine is Windows 2008 Server Standard 32-bit. An update - I just tried this on a Vista 64-bit laptop (running Sun 32-bit JDK 6u10) and did not have the problem. Ergo, this seems to be an issue with the JDK and detecting Windows 2008 as a Windows platform (or possibly with whatever mechanism JDev/WLS is using to detect the OS platform). I'll do more research on that and update if I find anything.
One more update: I didn't find any issues reported like this related to Windows 2008, but I did one more test: install and run JDeveloper using:
    java version "1.6.0_05"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_05-b13)
BEA JRockit(R) (build R27.6.0-50_o-100423-1.6.0_05-20080626-2105-windows-ia32, compiled mode)                                                                   The issue does not occur using this JDK. So to summarize, installing JDev 11g update 1 Studio edition, base installer using any of the SUN JDK's on Windows 2008 gives this problem. Using the windows installer or JRockit Mission Control JVM - no problems.
Finally, one last update - the error is related to the JVM that is used to install, not the one used to run JDeveloper (via editing jdev.conf) - the offending JDK is in wlserver_10.3\common\bin\commEnv.cmd. Seems like a no-no to have one JDK running JDev and another running the integrated WLS, though. Quite a pity, as JDev starts up pretty slowly using JRockit Mission Control.
JRockit Realtime seems to be a bit faster... sigh - now to remove the 72 extra JDK's on my laptop ;)
My going forward plan: use the Windows installer. Wish I never installed Windows Server 2008.
Now for the error details; the log shows:
ERROR:  An error occurred while building the default domain.

    Hi all,
(refer to [url http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3168105]here for original post)
Please see this log file for more details:

  • Arch as a VirtualBox guest: what specific Guest Additions to use?

I have installed Arch on VirtualBox PUEL 3.2.10 r66523.
I have tried to follow this wiki page. But the links to the new version(s) of guestadditions do not work any more. Plus, that particular version does not seem to be any newer than the current vanilla one that comes with the latest VirtualBox (am I wrong?).
So, I'm using the regular guestadditions and they do not provide the promised functionality.
Could you give me a hint in the right direction?
    Thanks for reading this.

My last post above was a mistake.
After rebooting (for another reason) both my virtual machine (Arch) and my host (Slackware), all the features from the additions run flawlessly.
I must have done something else (like disabling the GuestAdditions CD on the guest maybe?) because simple rebooting of the guest did not finalize the install of the additions. I also ran the installation scripts individually, according to the latest version of the manual (apparently it was not required on previous versions).
In any case, for the ones reading this thread, at this point GUESTADDITIONS FOR ARCH AS A GUEST DO WORK.
My apologies for my previous post above.

  • [SOLVED] PROJECT: Linux build w/ arch repo compatibility

Hi, I haven't been around in the linux world for too long, but I've fallen in love with the Arch philosophy (and the learning curve was a bit of a bonus) although there are a few adjustments that I, personally, would like to implement into the basic install system, and install system. So my question is, is it possible to compile an LFS (or build out of Arch, even, but I feel that LFS might be more specific to what I need) setup that is compatible with the archlinux package binaries and uses the pacman package manager?
And if so, would the developers and repository hosts receive it? or dislike it?

oh.... thanks , sorry about the repost.... I would delete this post if I knew how..

  • FSCM-COL: New Basis Rule for specific contact day

    Hi all,
I have an business requirement where i have a few Business Partners that should only be contacted by the specialist like, for example, one time each month or the first Monday of each month.
Since the client didn´t wanu2019t to use the standard functionality of reasubmission I need to create a specific basis rule for it and, by that, forcing that partner to only appear in the woklist for that day.
My idea is to use the functionality of u201CBusiness Hoursu201D (in tab Control under u201CBP Collections Managementu201D role) to map the specific days/calendar of contact and the new basis rule will fetch that info.
Now, my problem is that Iu2019m facing some problems on discovering wich tables/views the info that I updated is stored
Do you guys have any idea on this ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Bruno Sousa

    hi ,
Based on the requirement for that particular business partner assign different collection stsrategy , where the collection rule CR00000020 is used (customer contacts since N days ) the worklist can be run only on the date fixed for that particular business partner and worklist can be assigned to the collection specialist .
If an enhancement can be carried out for teh collection rule using BADI , in the business add inns the business hours can be included

  • Unable to import Basis (R3) objects to Integration Builder

I am trying to import RFCs and Idocs to the Integration Builder, but am getting the following message.
Unable to establish connection to R/3 system sapdtdb (system=00, client=010) Troubleshooting tips:
    Is the target system online?
Check the connection data (note that server names and groups are case-sensitive)
Tips for administrators (see the configuration guide for more details):
Does the user have the required authorizations in the target system?
Is the target system configured correctly in "etc/services"?
I have checked the radio button on the software component for allowing Import Of RFC and Idoc interfaces.
I have checked on both the PI and the R3 system that the entries in SM59 are correct and that login and connections are permitted.
On our old XI system, I am able to import objects, but on our new PI system I am getting the above error.
Does anyone have any other possible solutions to this please?

    Chris,
Please check whether have done all the steps given in this link or not for your new PI system:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/xi/sapR3%28Idocs%29ToXI--Steps+Summarized&
If you done all this you should be able to import the IDocs and RFCs without any problem.

  • ARCHER - Arch linux building tool

Many maintainers have a problem - at building package is required to install a plenty of dependences in to "working" system. Frequently, it is required to install a package which conflicts with an already installed and used. Building i686 packages on x86_64 machines Is required.
    Solution - chrooting.
Arсher - system created to help maintainers (or other useres) with this tasks.
    Archer can (now):
Create enviroment ready for chroot with independedt pacman, and basic utils.
Create enviroment with mounted (o -bind) pacman database and cache from "working" system.
Create eviroment from target pacman.conf file (e.g. i686 specified).
Build PKGBUILD in a chrooted enviroment with automatically syncing dependencies.
I'm trying to create wery simple system. This is just in a "template" state.
This is first version. It have a lot of bugs.
    Examles
    sudo ./archer -c
create ARCHER (specify with -R key) directory with
bash pacman filesystem sed gawk wget file tar make pkgconfig findutils gzip
and all dependencies. Archer used your /etc/pacman.conf to create pacman db, then just sync packages into chrooted system.
    You can now do
    chroot ARCHER
to use it for you own needs.
    You can do
    sudo ./archer -c -p ~/my.pacman.conf
Archer create a pacman db using this pacman.conf file. This mean that you can create i686 chroot in x86_64 system.
    You can do
    sudo ./archer -c -m -u
Archer mount (with bind) your pacman db and pacman cache into chrooted evniroment, then -S basic packages. You can save traffic/time.
    And the major:
    sudo ./archer -cb
Archer create chrooted enviroment, copy your PKGBUILD into ARCHER/home/pkg, chroot, and do makepkg -s. This will install all dependencies and build package.
Again - this is _very_ early version. It mosly unstable. Please test it.
Please do not test it unless you are clear understood what it do. you can have many problems with your db.
