Sun Studio 12 startup exception

Hi,
Below was the exception I got when I started Sun Studio, it was running fine until I installed glib from pkgutil and it was still running fine when I was in the IDE. The error only happened after I quit Sun Studio and go back in. Any idea?

Are you saying that "sunstudio" does not run anymore on this system?
Can you try to start it with empty userdir?
% rm -rf /tmp/newdir
% sunstudio --userdir  /tmp/newdir
BTW, what OS do you use? I guess it is Linux, correct?
Thanks,
Nik

    and this prevents the UI from working properly. I have to retry a few times and sometimes it starts up without any issues. Any idea what can cause this and how to prevent it from happening?

    It seems to depend on what directory I am in when I try and launch sunstudio. Sometimes it only works when I am in the root folder, sometimes it works when I am in the folder that contains my project.
    This is the only message on the console where i run it from:

    A wild guess: try cleaning (with a back up, of course) Sun Studio caches: ~/.sunstudio/ and .nbattrs in startup (or project?) directory.

  • Exception not always caught in Sun Studio 12

    Hi,
    We're using Sun Studio 12 (Sun C++ 5.9 SunOS_sparc Patch 124863-01 2007/07/25) on a Solaris 10 SPARC machine. In our applications an exception thrown is sometimes not caught in the try/catch statement and the program continues at an outer catch statement (which usually leads to the program exiting). So far I've not been able to reduce the code down to a simple example and I don't yet know what conditions causes this behaviour.
    In general the code has a big try/catch statement in main. Somewhere deep in the code there is a second try/catch statement which protects against a piece of code which we know may throw an exception. This is usually a smart pointer being dereferenced. The act of dereferencing the smart pointer in turn causes an exception to be thrown which is caught internally in a third try/catch inside the dereference code. The exception is successfully caught and some clean up is done. Then the exception is re-thrown by either using a throw; statement or a new throw xmsg("...");. All our exceptions are always of type xmsg which simply takes a string argument.
    When the problem manifests itself the second try/catch is ignored and the re-thrown exception is instead caught in the outer catch statement in main which causes the program to log an error and exit.
    We have lots of code which is structured the same way and the same style of code works in many cases only to fail in some specific case. It's an elusive problem because the problem moves around and it also depends on how the program is compiled. It only seems to happen when compiled in debug mode. If I compile with -xO4 the problem seems to go away.
    The problem also goes away or moves to a different place if the code has changed somewhere between compiles, i.e. some other developer has modified some code, not necessarily in the same are where the problem originally happened.
    One thing we have is a function we call DoThrow (used to suppress a warning on an older compiler) defined like this:
    void DoThrow(const std::string& msg)
      throw xmsg(msg);
    }As an experiment I replaced the call to DoThrow with a straight throw xmsg(...) at a place where the first exception was thrown and the problem went away. I'm not sure if removing the call to DoThrow fixed the problem or if the minor restructuring of the code was enough to move the problem elsewhere.
    For production releases we still use WorkShop 6, update 2 which does not have any problems like this. We really would like to upgrade to Sun Studio 12 because it's a much better compiler over all. We can't upgrade until we feel confident we have a workaround.
    Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be wrong or any ideas on what I can do to narrow down the problem?
    Thanks,
    Krister

    Many thanks. You've given me a few areas to focus on and I'll bring my house in order.
    The only external C++ library we depend on is STLport 5.0.2 which we compile ourselves. It's currently compiled with 5.3 on Solaris 8 and I will recompile it with 5.9 on Solaris 10. All other external libraries are C libraries. Our own code is put in static libraries and linked statically. I've read that exceptions thrown in shared libraries can be problematic.
    Your comment about complex conditional expressions (a ? f() : g()) is interesting. We've been bitten before by compiler bugs affecting those types of expressions. Destructors called twice or destructors called for temporaries never created. We may still have some conditional expressions like that.
    The exception is of type xmsg, defined this way:
    class xmsg
      public:
        xmsg(const char* s) : _msg(s) {}
        xmsg(const std::string& s) : _msg(s) {}
        const std::string& why() const { return _msg; }
      private:
        const std::string _msg;
    };There are three catch blocks involved and all the try/catch statement look like this:
    try
    catch(const xmsg& msg)
    }Here is a stack trace from dbx at the point where the exception is thrown the first time.

      try
      catch(const xmsg& msg)
        std::cerr << "ERROR: " << msg.why() << std::endl;
      }I'm sorry I have not yet been able to produce a smaller example that can be compiled and tested in isolation. I know that's important in order to track down the problem. It seems like the smallest change in seemingly unrelated parts of the code makes the problem come or go.

    I marked settings that would probably need closer attention. Easies way to troubleshoot the problem is to set everything to unlimited and see if it helps.
    Also, check if you have enough swap - Sun Studio needs at least one gig of swap and 512 RAM (see http://docs.sun.com/source/820-2973/release_notesML.html#SystemReqs).

  • Exceptions not caught in shared library when compiled under Sun Studio 9

    I realize it's a fairly old version of Sun Studio, however if at all possibly we'd like to avoid updating to the latest.
    Sun Studio 9, version reports
    version of "/opt/SUNWspro/bin/../prod/bin/../../bin/cc": Sun C 5.6 2004/07/15
    version of "/opt/SUNWspro/bin/../prod/bin/../../bin/CC": Sun C++ 5.6 2004/07/15
    uname -a
    SunOS sunblade 5.9 Generic_118558-27 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-100
    The problem is within our shared library a function calls another method within a try/catch block. This method then sometimes throws an exception which does have a matching catch block. On all other systems (Windows, AIX, HP-UX, Linux) the code works, the exception is caught and handled. On Solaris with Sun Studio 9 though, the exception is ignored and instead triggers an abort and core dump.

    The code which throws the exception is a static method of IGException which has a basic throw line:
         throw IGException(...);
    Source code is compiled with the following flags, none of which I could find any info to suggest affect this:
    CC -c -Xt -xCC -misalign -xarch=v9 -O
    Linking of the shared object is then done via the following, again nothing obvious that could cause issues. mapfile is an empty file.
    ld -o <outputfilename> -G -z textoff -M mapfile -z noversion -64 -h <outputfilename> <object files> -L/opt/SUNWspro/lib/v9 -lCrun -lX11 -lc -lm
    I did read somewhere mentioning to make sure to use RTLD_GLOBAL if using dlopen on the .so, but the test app is using ld to link the library.
    Does anyone have any ideas why with the Sun Studio 9 compiler these exceptions are not being caught? Based on the fact they are caught on all other compilers, i'm guessing this issue is with the compiler.
    Also, as a test it seems that if the shared object is not built as a 64-bit object, then everything works. The issue only seems to occur when it is a 64-bit object. Likely an issue with the 64-bit compiling?

    As the other poster pointed out, you need to link the shared library using CC, not ld. I should have noticed that error in the original post.
    Try using CC instead of ld in your link command. The CC command causes additional files to be linked into the shared library that are required for proper operation, and particularly for exception handling. I think that is the actual source of your problem.
    You should not use -L options that point into the compiler installation area, and when you use CC to link, you don't need to.
    I'm surprised that you seem to have a copy of libCrun.so.1 in the compiler installation area -- that should not be the case. The the only versions of libCrun should be static libraries libCrun.a. You almost never want to link with a static version of a system library, and absolutely never when building a shared library. The file /opt/SUNWspro/lib/libCrun.so.1 ought to be a symbolic link pointing to /usr/lib/libCrun.so.1, but if that were the case, the version command would have the same output.
    By any chance, did you install your compiler by copying it from another installation? If you do that, you need to use tar, not cp, to ensure that symbolic links are preserved.

  • Sun Studio 12 takes lot of time to startup

    Hi,
    When I try to use sunstudio 12 on a Solaris 10 U6 x86 box, it takes ages to open the UI window.
    The window kind of hung state with out any messges showing in it until it comes up with full screen.
    Debugging from sunstudio takes lot of time when we try step to the code.
    Is this a known issue?. Any workaround?.
    The Solaris system has 8GB RAM and plenty of disk space.
    Thanks

    Thank you for the report! No, it is not a known issue.
    I use Sun Studio IDE on Solaris 10 x86 system with 2 Gb memory.
    Its responsiveness is ok (though sometimes it parses my projects
    for 10-20 seconds, but it happens only 2-3 times per day).
    The "startup" time is about 20-30 seconds.
    Let's try to find out what is the problem on your system.
    Can you run "sunstudio" under "truss -d" and look at the log file?
    Here is the command:
    truss -d -a -e -f -o ss.tr  sunstudio  --userdir /tmp/newuserdir It will create a log file "ss.tr" in current directory. Open it in a text editor,
    and look for long actions. Probably there is something in your HOME
    directory, that causes these delays.
    If you don't see anything suspicious, let me know. I'll take a look at the
    log file (though it can be several Mb, so we have to find out how to send it).
    Thanks,
    Nik

    I figured it out by looking at the application server logs on the admin console. The problem was a permissions issue. I'm working with some plug-ins from ESRI (the gis software company) for ArcGIS Server 9.2. I forgot that you have to add some lines to the server.policy file (located at:
    /<install directory>/SunAppServer8/domains/creator/config/
    The text you have to add is
    grant {
    permission java.util.logging.LoggingPermission "control","";
    permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "*","read";
    permission java.util.PropertyPermission "PEOBJEDITHOME","read,write";
    permission java.util.PropertyPermission "ARCGIS_RELEASEALL_SHUTDOWN_HOOK","read,write";
    permission java.util.PropertyPermission "ARCGIS_IUNKNOWN_VARIENT_OBJECTS","read,write";
    So there you go.

    Hello!
    I googled "SSServiceTagSupport.java:257" and found out that it is filed as IZ 154094 against Netbeans:
    http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=154094
    Actually it was reported many times:
    http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=151921
    It suggests a few workarounds.
    Workaround 1:
    "Simple workaround is to disable registration using command line option -J-Dnb.registration.enabled=false"
    Workaround 2:
    "The file ~/.netbeans-registration/6.5/registration.xml is empty, so I have this file erased and restarted the IDE.
    After this step, the file was not regenerated, but the IDe starts now without this problem."
    Please, try one of them.
    Thanks,
    Nik

    __END_NAMESPACE_C99
    When I comment this line out, that particular error does not show up but still the other errors above still show up.
    From the testing I did, it appears to have these problems for most of the C++ programs I have written, especially the ones that involve object oriented programming. All programs that I wrote do not have these problems with g++ or Sun CC for Solaris. It does however work fine only for small fraction of the programs I have written. I dont quite understand why it works in some cases and others it doesnt, but I know for sure, that it should be working for all cases when Sun CC from Sun Studio 10 on Solaris 10 for X86 has no problems compiling the same programs.

    I tried workaround number 2 from the 3 choices that were listed by horsh. That fixes the mathcalls.h problem but still I have the following errors.

    Can someone please respond? There is more to the problem. Perhaps
    there are more glibc headers that have problems. In addition, if Sun wants to port the Sun Studio Compilers for linux to be stable on all linux distributions I suggest using VM ware and installing several linux distrobutions as virtual machines and testing this software on each virtual machine to see the problems that occur on each distribution. That way you might be able to uncover more problems to find a solution that will work best for portability on all linux distributions.

  • How to install sun studio 12 under Centos 5???

    HI, all,
    I am trying to install Sun Studio 12 into Centos 5. The followings are what I did:
    1. Download sun studio 12 package by selecting Linex (x86) for Centos from web site and save this package under /var/tmp.
    2. I used bzcat to unpack this package by:
    bzcat < SunStudio12ml-linux-x86-200709-pkg.tar.bz2 | /bin/tar xvf -
    3. I did prepare_system before installation by:
    ./prepare_system [-d /opt/sun/ ] [-R /var/tmp/ ] [-C | -s netbeans | java | patches | all_patches | jdk_patches | all | print_needed_steps ]
    where [-d /opt/sun/ ] is the directory where all missing softwares will be installed, [-R /var/tmp/ ] is the directory where unpacked programs are saved.
    After running prepare_system, the resposes are:
    bash: -s: command not found
    bash: patches: command not found
    bash: all_patches: command not found
    bash: all: command not found
    bash: print_needed_steps: command not found
    bash: jdk_patches: command not found
    *Usage: gij [OPTION] ... CLASS [ARGS] ...*
    to invoke CLASS.main, or
    *gij -jar [OPTION] ... JARFILE [ARGS] ...*
    to execute a jar file
    *Try `gij --help' for more information.*
    4. I started to use installer with command line to install the sun studio 12 by:
    ./installer -nodisplay
    The result shows me some exceptions and installation is failed as:

    Hi,
    Thank you for your helps.
    According to your suggestions, I downloaded JDK 6 update 10 RC, specifical in Linux platform : self-extracting JDK file named:
    jdk-6u10-bin-b28-linux-i586-21-jul-2008.bin
    I saved downloading under the directory where sun studio is located.
    I used
    yum search jdk
    to find jdk exists in Centos 5.2 shown as the message as:

  • Sun Studio 11: Cannot create a new file

    When I want to create a new *.h or *.cc file in my CVS mounted directory tree, studio raises it's famous "Unexpected Exception" dialog with a java stack trace. I have them prepared if you want, I just wanted to check before if there is some already known bug or advice. This worked flawlessly on Sun Studio 10.
    As for source browser (another topic in this forum), yeah, I would also very much like some kind of source browser, e.g. to be able to find all definitions/calls to my virtual method, have a class hierarchy...
    And one final note on the constant problems in communication between NetBeans and XEmacs, especially if there are two or more XEmacs windows open. Initially all works ok, but with time it starts...source error hyper links from make/build window and search dialog fail to open and position in the source file, then it can't open a file from Filesystems window, and when I restart the SunStudio, everything works again for some time.
    This was most annoying in release 9, then somewhat better in 10 but still present, and I see now nothing is better in release 11.
    Details:
    OS = SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-26
    HW = sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-1500
    SunStudio 11, netbeans 3.5V11, jdk1.5.0_06
    (all mounted from a Solaris 9 driven server)
    Thanks for reading and answers.
    Best regards.

    Thank you for your report! There is no bug filed for

    About XEmacs: yes, the communication between IDE and
    XEmacs is not stable. It was a little bit improved in
    Sun Studio
    10, but not enough. We plan to improve it in next
    release. I'll
    try to create a test case according to your
    description. BTW,
    why there are two or more XEmacs windows? Usually
    there
    should be only one window with many buffers. I don't
    think
    Sun Studio IDE can manage several XEmacs windows.Why? Because it is a great help to be able to watch two different buffers/modules at the same time when writing source code. If there is only one window with many buffers, I have to either split window in two (Ctrl X 2) or continuously switch between two buffers, which is annoying.
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Problems with sun studio 12 in suse linux 11

    Hi.
    I installed Sun Studio 12 suse linux with no problems. However, the debugging modules (DBX) are not working any more. When I started Sun Studio, it gave a message about modules that could not be loaded in tha moment. I did not pay attention. But I noticed that all debugging options were disabled.
    Using the module manager, I saw the DBX module was not checked, and I could not change it. I was marked with a red X. So I thought to reinstall the application. However, the uninstall utility doesn't work either.
    According with the documentation, running ./uninstaller does it, but I get the following error message instead
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: uninstall_Sun_Studio_12/class
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: uninstall_Sun_Studio_12.class
    at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:200)
    at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method)
    at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:188)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:306)
    at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:276)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:251)
    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(ClassLoader.java:319)
    I tried to uninstall manually, and then execute installer, by using first the software manager in linux and deleting the producregistry file manually. It worked because I executed the installer. However, in Sun Studio IDE, debugging options are still not available despite I "reinstalled" the application. I checked the log files and they say the file uninstall_Sun_Studio_12.class could not be written.
    So my questions are:
    1. Is there any other way to repair Sun Studio? What could be the possible for this module to stop working?
    2. Does anyone have an idea of why the installer cannot write the uninstaller class?
    I found that perhaps problems regarding Java / Netbeans versions could be the problem, but the ones I have installed are those packages that were installed along with Sun Studio, and both are valid.
    Thank you very much.

    Perhaps you can simply delete the Sun Studio 12 installation tree, because it will not work on SUSE Linux 11.
    This OS is not supported, so any problems you see with SS12 on SUSE 11 will not be fixed.
    But we have a newer version, that should work better.
    You can try to download and install Sun Studio Express 2008/11 (extract pre-installed image from tar.bz2 file).
    Here is a pointer to the web page:
    http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/express
    All you need is to provide a email address, and press "Download Now" button.
    You will see a page, that gives you 2 options to download Sun Studio Express 2008/11.
    Use "Option 2": Download Tarfile Installer
    Thanks,
    Nik
