SunMC 3.6 : es-guisetup vs es-setup

Hello.
I've managed to install SunMC 3.6 on a V120 with es-guiinst and es-guisetup and was able to login and use the program flawlessly. I wanted to automate the installation process using the command line es-inst and es-setup -A answers_files. But now when I run the console it says login failed after trying to connect the server. I used the exact same configuration on both installation attempts.
Any ideas?

The most common reason this usually occurs is because the of the shared memory issue with the Sun MC database. Looks like this issue has been passed on to 4.0. Please try doing the following:
When installing a Server in a whole-root Zone, edit /etc/project to set the shared memory setting first.
Change the "default:3:::" entry to look like this:
default:3::::project.max-shm-memory=(privileged,1073741824,deny)
...where 1073741824 indicates a 1GB setting (you may tune it lower). For more details, go here:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5418/6n7gk6ilo?a=view
Mostly this is a problem in whole root zones, but sometimes also applies to the global zones.

This fixed the database manual startup. Running the setup script again removes the changes I made and the problem returns.

  • Problems starting SunMC Agent 3.6 under Solaris 10

    Hi folks,
I just did a test installation of the new SunMC 3.6 Server which worked fine. Afterwards, I did a fresh install of the 3.6 agent on a Sun Enterprise 420R running Solaris 10. I installed the agent in the global zone.
At the end of the setup, when the system asks me if I want to start the agent, which I affirmed. But this didn't work, system says just laconically "Could not start agent". Unfortunately, I can't even find the logs, since there is no log subdirectory under /var/opt/SUNWsymon. Have they moved this under Solaris 10?
Any ideas somebody how to dig into this?

    Hi Mike,
This sounds a lot like a post just a few days ago:

What do you see when you start the Agent with this command:

  • SunMC Performance Reports - Newbie

    Good morning,
I've installed v3.6.1 and v4 just to poke around, but I haven't purchased any of the agents or add-ons (but we're about to), and one of my primary questions is about performance reporting. Does SunMC provide graphs and/or reports that can be easily generated, or e-mailed on a regular basis or something? Is there an add-on piece that provides that?
    Thanks!
    - DT

Yes, Sun MC does include the Performance Reporting Manager (PRM) addon which enables you to graph and report on various monitored metrics including hardware and software inventory reports. i.e. What hardware you currently have in your datacenter, what systems have a particular patch.
However, the PRM addon does not provide support for email the graphs on a regular basis. For this you would need Halcyon's Enterprise Reporter:
    http://www.halcyoninc.com/products/EReporter
This product offering is bundled with Halcyon's WebPortal product which is a web interface into Sun MC that provides many easy to use features such as group operations (loading modules on 100 systems with a single click, alarm threshold tuning, etc.)
Halcyon is also offering live 1-on-1 demos of Sun MC and their solutions and would be able to show you the various features of Sun MC including PRM. To sign up and setup an appointment:

There are many other postings with screenshots that may be of interest:
    http://forums.halcyoninc.com/showthread.php?t=111
In addition, Halcyon provides many different add-ons to Sun MC extending it to monitor almost anything in the datacenter, including storage (Hitachi, NetApp), network devices (Cisco), applications (Oracle, Veritas, Syabse, Java System), non-Sun platforms (Windows, Linux, AIX), and integrations to various Enterprise Managers (Tivoli, HP Openview):

I was wondering if a SunMC agent is able to recognize
a ZFS filesystem? I've tried it on one of our test
servers there is no category under Kernel
Reader-Filesystem Usage for ZFS...only ufs and vxfsNot quite yet. In fact a SunMC Server will refuse to even install on a ZFS partition without some minor changes to its setup utils. But the next release should be fully ZFS aware and compatible.

  • SunMC Console on Windows XP not connecting

    Hello,
I have just installed SunMC Center on my PC and attempted to login into the SunMC Server but get an error of communication could not be established, the server version may be incompatible.
I am able to connect using another PC, so my SMC server is up and the processes are up and fine. The working PC is on the same segment as my new PC, so I dont know what could be the issue with this PC thats not working.
Has anyone ran into this before? If so, what is not configured?
    TIA
    LR

    Hi,
I had this problem-it is not a firewall issue (I had the problem with
both the firewall on my PC and the server down) but seems
to be a weird software conflict.I posted a message on this some
    time ago (displayed below)..
Glad to see somebody else is also having this problem and it is not
just me.Anybody have the console on Windows XP working?
So far all I have found out is that port 23 of the SMC server is being
accessed by the SMC console on the PC (which is not working) but
on the laptop install of the SMC console it is not (this information is from
    firewall logs).
Both the SMC consoles on the Laptop and the PC are installed from
the same packages. Both have the same firewall settings, both report the same java version..
Needless to say if you get it working let us know how you did it.
    Cheers,
    Ian
    ====================================
I have been trying to get the Java based console
Working from my PC and have found the following
oddments. When I run it from my PC the console fails
with a message saying Communication could not be
Established with the server. The server version may be
Incompatible If I then get my laptop, which has the same
Operatating system, same firewall setup, same virus software,
    Same java :-
    java version "1.4.2_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_03-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_03-b02, mixed mode),and the same smc software ,
remove my PC from the network and plug in my laptop in which has the
same IP address as my PC,the console software works! Does anybody have any
idea what could be preventing the console on the PC working whilst the
laptop is fine? I have a few ideas in that the console software installed on some
other pcs does not work as well so there appears to be something in common
Installed on the PCs (but not on the laptop) which is somehow stopping
the console from working. Now ,my pc is one inherited from the ghost of sys admins
Past but there is nothing as far as I can see which could cause some form of
Conflict-I am mainly focusing on Java based software..What I guess I will have to do
Is to uninstall as much software as I can and hope to eventually find the
    Culprit..

    # /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-platform d SC
how can i delete Multiple Platform Agent Instances?
    can some help me plz
    thanks...

    Hi,
Just to clarify my situation in regards to what have been said.
I'm running Solaris 10 6/06 with update 2 as seen by output from my system, an old lady that listens to the name 'Enterprise 450'. I just downloaded the 3.6.1 SMC from Sun the other day. I was trying to install it on the very same machine.
I googled around a little and stumbled upon this thread and thought that this may be the same problem. Haven't looked any deeper into this since it is my test system and i felt OK with the answer given.
Anyway, seems a little odd from SUN's part not supporting this on their own system.
What HW are you running and in which config?
    Regards,
    Pierre

  • SunMC and IPMP ?

Does SunMC monitor IPMP configurations at all ? I asking about servers with IPMP setup but don't have Sun Cluster installed. I say this thinking, naively, that the Sun Cluster SunMC module monitors the IPMP config for cluster nodes.

Just an update on this in case any one is interested.
When the agent core dumps, it has by default a rlimit of zero which is pretty useless if you ask me. To get a core dump, you have to follow these steps.
    in a bourne shell
    stop your agent
    # ESDEBUG=true
    # export ESDEBUG
    then start your agent.
This works as I finally got a core dump after many frustrating months. When doing a pstack on the core, I found some typical libc calls and then a number of ut calls which suggests that the SunRay software is causing the core dump. My systems are large and I run normally have 80 to 100 people on each one so perhaps there may be a limit when the agent does someting like utwho -c.
So this is now going to Sun and hopefully I will get some resolution on this.
    Regards
    Stephen

  • SunMC Tape devices

Best way to capture performance stats from tape devices in SunMC?

Native Drives, or from something like Veritas NetBackup?
In either case, for any specific variable within SunMC, there are two reporting packages I know of.
    1) Sun's Performance Reporting Manager (PRM) installable during the SunMC setup
    2) Halcyon's Reporter Product
    http://www.halcyoninc.com/products/Reporter/index.php
Both these can be applied to the tape info in the Kernel Reader module, or to data supplied by something like Halcyon's NetBackup module:

  • SunMC console through firewall

Our firewall sits between our SunMC server/agents and our Windows PCs (SunMC console gui) I'd like to control what ports the SunMC server talks to the console on so that I don't have to have all ports open in our firewall.
Has anyone changed what ports the server uses to talk to the consoles on? It looks like they are all high ports and it would be nice if I can define a range of ports. I can see in the docs how to configure what ports the agent talks to the servers on, but wasn't able to find th same info for the server <--> console portion.
    Thanks,
    Karen

    Hi Karen,
Unless things have changed, the Java RMI communication between the Server and Console uses unbound (dynamic) ports, and there is no option to restrict them to a certain range.
Do you need all the functionality of the standard Java Console? Many organizations use the full Console to setup SunMC, then use the web interface through a browser for day-2-day viewing. The web server is part of the standard free SunMC 3.5 distribution, requires no additional license, and uses a single http/https port... which you should easily be able configure your firewall to accept.
I recommend giving the web interface a try to see if it meets your needs. If not, then you may need to look into some sort of tunneling/VPN solution. You could even use a free X Server on your Windows box (i.e. Cygwin) to run the Java Console off of your SunMC Server, but that may be a bit slow.

  • SUNMC 3.5 & SB100

I have installed SUN MC 3.5 server and agent on a group of machines. All machine communicate just fine except for 2 SunBlade 100s. The agents are running but the server doesn't collect data. When I run a 'discovery ' on the network for those nodes it finds the machines and labels them correctly "SB100" but shows there status of DOWN.
    Lee

No when you attempt to add them it "Cannot
communicate with the agent process. Please check
host/agent an retry." I can monitor via "SNMP Ping"
but that is it.This often indicates that there is a security mismatch between your Server and Agent. Basically your Agents on the Blades don't "trust" your Server enough to respond to it when you try to make a regular icon.
First, make sure that you actually have a SunMC Agent running on the Blades and not the default Solaris "snmpdx" process. A SunMC Agent will show up as an "esd - init agent -dir /var/opt/SUNWsymon -q" process.
The next thing to check is if you specified the same security "seed" value when you ran setup on the Blades. This is the secret password/string you used when setting up your SunMC Server. If you think you may have gotten it wrong, you can reset it on the Blades with these comands:
    (as root)
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-stop -a
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-run base-usm-seed.sh -s [seed_from_Server] -c agent
    /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-start -a
If you perform these steps and wait 3 mintues and you still cannot create an icon (and you're sure you have the correct seed), then you may have an IP address mismatch. Do the Blades have dual interfaces/NICs? If so, identify the IP address for the Blade that is on the same network as your SunMC Server (i.e. "ping [blade_hostname];arp [blade_hostname]" on the Server box), then edit the /var/opt/SUNWsymon/cfg/domain-config.x file on a Blade and edit the "agent = { ... }" section to add an "agentServer" entry with the correct IP like this:
    agent = {
    snmpPort = "161"
    agentServer = "IP_address_of_Blade"
Then perform the 3 "as root" command I listed above again, wait at least 3 minutes, and try making your icon again. Please post to the list to let us know how it works out :)

  • How can I setup a mail-specific passcode/restriction on iPad used by multiple family members?

How can I setup a mail-specific passcode/restriction on iPad used by multiple family members?
Have an Exchange mail account setup and accessible in my mail on iPad... however my kids use it and i would like to restrict them from accessing this specific portion of the device.  I tried viewing restriction options and do not see that i can apply a restriction specifically to Mail.  Thanks for your help.

Not a feature of iOS. Check the AppStore to see if there are other
mail apps that allow passcode protection.
Or use Safari to log onto your email via a web-based interface and
enter your credentials each time. A bit slower, but the kids will
not know the details to login.

  • New setup questions...

    Hey Guys,
I'm moving to a new condo on 9/1 and getting Fios (switching from cable) for the first time.  In the proverbial nutshell, what I want to do is this: run two HD TiVos (with cablecards), plus my Apple Time Capsule as my primary router.  I don't care a bit about VOD or Verizon's channel guides, email, or any other silly thing they provide.  An ISP is (or ought to be) just a 'dumb pipe'.
Having done some research online today, it seems as though I need to have my ONT set up to run Ethernet, not MOCA (coax).  Is there anything else I've missed that I need to know?
Thanks!  Any suggestions greatly appreciated...  :-)
    Regards,
    Ken

You would want to have a CAT5 Cable run from the location where the ONT will be to where your Apple Router will be locatated.
Allow the FIOS Technician to install their Router and get everything up and running.  Since you are not planning on using the Verizon Router the location should not mater.  I would just have a CAT5 Patch cable available and ask them to use it to make the data conenction from the ONT to the Verizon Router.
Once the technician is done you can release the TCP/IP Address from teh Verizon Router, Power Down, Swap in your Router, and hopefully be all setup.  Here is a FAQ with more information on using different routers:
