  • X4600 M2 crashes under load

    Hello,
I've got x4600 M2 with 256GB of memory and 8 dual-core Opterons, all parts officialy supported. I'm running SLES10 and SLES10sp1 on it, also certified to run properly. The problem is that when running heavy computations (100% of all cpu's and 95% of memory) it does not survive for more than hour. The problem is easy to replicate (boot the system up, run anything resource-hungry, wait 40-60 minutes, have system hanged), but hard to diagnose - these is no single chunk of data. When working interactively system chokes down for a minute and later on freezes completely with no single message. BMC also says that everything is ok. I was able to catch error message only once making 20 hangs. It's included below.
The only way to run it stable I found is to run non-smp kernel. Having single core "fixes" things - 256 gb of memory is still available, but 15 cores are lost then.
Any idea what the cause may be?
    Regards,
    nobody12345

I've seen this type of error on dual core CPUs running at full (100%) load. The system will hang with a CPU context corrupt error. Typically, this error is due to
bad memory, not a bad CPU, but since you say that when you run in single CPU mode, everything "works", I'd suspect a bad CPU.Well, it "works" the way that it doesn't crash. It's hard to stress the system as much as with 16 cpu's having one core only, so this option can't excluded. I even found one insignificant memory module with correctable ecc and took affected pair out. No change at all. As for cpu context corrupt - that was the first thing which came into my mind after seeing error data, but two cores in separate cpu's wouldn't rather crash in the same moment. I have plans to run fascist cpu check anyway.
I'd suggest booting the SUN Diag CD that came with the system and doing an in depth memory and CPU test.Just booting.
In addition, there is a very nice program called "stress" that will simulate your load conditions and provide diagnostic output. This tool has proved to be very
helpful. You seem to be more experienced that me here - if I bind it to specific core and start cycling it at 100%, it won't generate many context switches, right? Having 15 unused cores would rather guarantee having this one left in peace.
You may also want to check the TOY clock on the x4600 motherboard to make sure it is properly set. I've seen conditions where the system clock becomes
so unsynched from the TOY clock that system calls fail. Boot into the BIOS to set the TOY clock. Also, make sure your NTP server setttings are properly
configured. Will do with next downtime. Which is, considering constant crashes, probably tomorrow.
One last thing... when Linux begins to run out of memory (as you say, the app takes 95% of memory), the kernel starts to kill off system level
processes/daemons, one of which is ntpd. I'd suggest running your application to use less memory if possible, and see if it runs properly. My suggestion
would be to boot the kernel, then see what amount of memory is mapped by the kernel without any apps running. Then subtract that from the total memory.
The 'free' command is useful for this (or 'cat /proc/meminfo').Ntp is always ok. After an hour it usually corrects 1.2s, so clock source is not too reliable, but ntp keeps it under control until I kill the server.
Oh.... one more last thing... if the kernel needs to swap out the 95% memory process, does it have sufficient swap to do so? This could also create an issue. It does not for sure. Also kswapd's are very active, up to 100% cpu sometimes. Does it mean that going out of memory causes os crashes? I've seen such situation many times - kernel is expected to kill few processes and recover. And it does on all other machines (IMB servers, blades etc.) I don't care what it kills at the moment, as it simply freezes.
I'll stress the system cpu by cpu in the weekend. If you know any way to make it really proper way I'd gladly hear your advice. Your help is very appreciated BTW.

  • Weblogic Server Crashes under load

I am completely lost and do not know where to start for this problem.
Once the server gets a heavy load it crashes. I try to ping it and
does not respond even thought the process is running on Unix. I do
not know where to start. Can someone please help me!!!
    Thanks. :)
    Here is the config:

    Things I have noticed
    - Before it crashes I see this in the error log.

  • Strange crashes under load

When I am maxing out my mac it occasionally crashes hard - usually after I leave it unattended to complete a task. When I inspect the panic.log, it always says CPU1 experienced some unhandled trap or access violation.
When I disable cpu#2 on the processor palette, I cannot crash the mac but of course I lose 1/4th the throughput.
How difficult would it be to get this fixed? I purchased the machine in July 2005.
    Quad G5 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

maybe i missed something, but do you have apple care? that should cover it. if not and you feel good about working inside the computer you can call apple or find some other place that sells them and do it your self, since you don't have apple care you won't void it. if so and they do agree to repair it make sure you take it to a apple store. because you will have a much faster return. i know from sending mine in and taking it to the apple store to get fixed.

  • Adobe Bridge CS3 crashes on load in my Windows 7 workstation.

Adobe Bridge CS3 crashes on load in my Windows 7 workstation.
I recently completely removed, deactivated and reinstalled all my Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Master Collection to solve some problems with other application from the suite and now I'm surprise Bridge continues to fail. In my portable workstation the same software (Bridge) uses to work.
I tried launching Bridge under several compatibility modes. All failed.
Is there any know bug I should be aware of? Any fix?
    Is this a common problem?

Curt Y. Thank you for your answer.
It was only Bridge who was crashing. It failed to load and Windows was giving an error message.
I tried your suggestion, and resetting all options in the reset window it now loads. It was as simple as that.

  • Safari 5.1.4 crashes upon loading pages

After much time getting my MBP 5,1 10.6.8 running right another bug has cropped up, Safari crashes under these circumstances:
Only when loading pages. If Safari is only opened it's fine.
         In normal user mode.
         In another administrator account mode.
         In Safe Mode.
It hasn't crashed in a Guest Account Mode.
Any ideas would be appreciated and here's the latest Console User Diagnostic Report:

  • JDK 1.3.1_08 Under load on linux (RH7.3)

I have been running JDK 1.3.1 on linux under a development environment for quite a long time (2+ years) without issue, running a large Java application cinsisting of EJBs, and Web apps being run by BEA Weblogic. In an effort to cut costs we are migrating to linux for our production systems.
During the testing phase of running our applications on a dual-SMP Xeon based server with 2 GB of RAM we had no issues. However under load the java child processes (threads to the JVM) are getting very low priorities (15-19) and have a status of "SN" sleeping, and low-priority. If you run pstack on the PPID of the java processes they seem to be 'stuck' in nanosleep.
Does anyone out there have experiencing running large apps under high load on linux platforms?

had no issues. However under load the java child
processes (threads to the JVM) are getting very low
priorities (15-19) and have a status of "SN" sleeping,
and low-priority. Every Linux JVM that I know does not use native thread priorities (nice levels) at all, so if you are seeing child PIDs at the 15-19 range, someone most likely started the JVM at the exact same nice level. How many runtimes do you have running? What are your 5, 10, and 15 minute load averages? Are they under 2.0? Can you start your runtimes at a lower nice level?
Does anyone out there have experiencing running large
apps under high load on linux platforms? The `S' you see w/ ps is not particularly indicative that its stuck in this queue, just may be waiting for IO. Adjust your runtime nice level to 10 and under if your load is high and you have a higher IO priority runtime (as you have a dual-proc system).

  • 925X NEO Plat reboot under load

    Hi all,
After 3 nights trying to find what is wrong with my config, my last hope is that one of you will save me
I recently received my new MB and was quite happy. My problem is that when I start XP SP1, it works ok for a while with a CPU idle at a 70°C temperature.
If I start 3DMark2005, computer works for few minutes, cpu fan speed up and PC crash. On reboot most of the time it freeze with all but the second diagnose led green: ie G R G G.
Does anyone knows what may be the reason.
Moreover, even if with bios I see a high CPU temperature, the CoreCenter complain about an unsupported MB, so no way to check CPU temp under load.
I Flashed my Bios to v1.3, changed PSU from a 350W enermax to a 550W Qmax, tested with various memory configurations, I'm desperate
    Config is :
    925X Neo Platinum
    P4 3.4GHz 550
    4x512MB PC4300 DDR2 Twinmos
    Gigabyte X800XT 256MB
2 SATA HD, 1 IDE HD, 1 IDE DVD
    550W Qmax
    I'm waiting for your comments,
    Regards,
    Judgef

    Hi,
For cpu-temp monitor - Download and install Speedfan
    http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php?ExtraId=1138
To get “auto” cpu temp monitoring in tray, when windows starts –
Go to start / program / find speedfan exe-file (icon) and drag & drop it to autostart.
Then go to speedfan – configure – option – start minimized.
Then configure – check the “right” temp /fans / voltage sensors.
For cpu stress – Download and install Prime95 ( torturetest )
    http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
Assuming cpu and heatsink are correctly mounted – do you have an overall good airflow in the chassi ( incoming air in front / out in back + sidepanel fan ?)
    Also regarding overall stability.....
At what voltage is the DDR2-memory  settings in bios ?
Have tried increase voltage some ?
    Tested Ram for errors ?
    http://www.memtest86.com/#download0
    You´ll need a dos disc.

  • JNDI Connections Hang Under Load.  Is this a bug ??

    Hi
We are using Oracle application server and the Oracle Directory Server. I have a simple servlet making JNDI calls to fetch an attribute, under load JNDI calls are hanging creating a large back log of threads that won't go away till the application server crashes. We are using the Sun Hotspot VM 1.3 on Solaris.
I noticed on this forum that several other people have had this problem. Is this jndi limitation or bug ? Is there a known fix for the problem ? It looks like under load even though directory server is up and running alright, serveral JNDI threads hang waiting on a monitor.
    thanks in advance
    Raghu ..

    Hi Raghu,
I'm interested in this issue. I wanted to know a few things
    1. Are you using a pool of servlet instances or a single instance for all requests.
2.In your servlet are you directly calling the jndi lookup, if so can u pl.provide a snap shot code of that.
3.What is the load, at which your application getting failed.
4.Have you implemented any thread safe mechanisms like implementing SingleThreadModel, or using synchronized service method(which actually should not be done)....
let me know the above details,,
    Thanks

  • New N570GTX Frozr III PE not stable at stock voltage under load

I just built a new system with one new MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr III PE card.  I was getting similar behavior in games as other users have reported here (card effectively "reboots" or shuts down for a split second looking at Afterburner).  It happend in WoW sporadically (nothing else installed yet), but I think this is because it's not a demanding game, rarely putting a ton of load on the GPU.  With 3DMark 11 it was easily repeatable.  In fact, the Benchmark Test (free ver) wouldn't even boot up under stock voltage.
I found that under load my card was only drawing a core voltage of .975 and once I bumped it up to +12(.987v) it became stable. Below are the pertinent details along with my question.  Stock resting it was .912v and that seems like a common number for this card.
    Beta Nvidia 275.50 drivers
    Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 5
Corsair HX750W PSU (plenty of power, and I did play around with switching plugs for the 2 PCI-E cables, no difference)
Now, I've found my issue, which was low core voltage. My question is this though...
Show I be worried that my card was not drawing enough voltage under load with stock settings?  Is this indicative of faulty components that might get worse with time?  Should I RMA this card for a replacement just to be safe?
If this is nothing to worry about, cool...it will be a pain in the ass to have to run Afterburner all the time, but I guess once I get to overclocking this thing, I'd be doing that anyway.  Thanks in advance.

Just got a crash at +12 after an hour goofing around in WoW, so I've bumped it up to +18 (.931v resting, .993v under load).
And yeah, running Afterburner isn't a huge issue.  I'm more looking for guidance around if I should RMA this considering it isn't stable out of the box when under load.  I know this should be somewhat expected when buying an o/c card, but I'm curious how unique my situation is.  I love the card and even if I did RMA it would be for another Frozr III.  I just want to make sure that if I need to do this, I do it w/in Amazon's window of return.
My worry is when I do get this thing stable and start to o/c it, I'll be pushing some dangerous voltages to reach speeds other with this card can get to relatively safely.
Edit: It occurs to me that with this second crash, maybe voltage is only part of the puzzle.  I thought I'd covered all my bases, but I'd be open to suggestions on other things to tweak or try.
Edit2: I just realized that I made a mistake in the OP.  This is a Frozr III PE/OC edition.

  • Failure under load

When under load my system is extremely unstable and im not sure why, its been a year of trouble shooting and still no luck. Here is how it all came about.
Its sort of hard to explain, basically the computer runs perfectally aside from slightly low scores in the 3d marks but i can live with that. Then when i try and play games the system becomes unstable. When i first built the computer almost exactally a year ago it used flash blue screen and restart when idle in windows at random intervals and since all the hardware was very very new and there didnt appear to be any reason for this i assumed that it was driver conflicts. At this time all games ran fine and no reboot problems occured when gaming. The over the past summer i got battlefield 2. When playing it the computer will restart at random intervals sometimes hours sometimes only 10 or 20 minutes. It locks up the sounds goes from skipping in a loop to resuming back to skipping for 30 seconds or a minute then it just restarts. Upon returning to windows i get a "Windows has recovered froma serious error" message and when sending the report it comes up as a driver problem or hardware issue with nvidia graphics card. After trying almost everything i could think of including every combination of every set of drivers and countless windows installs i decided it could be my video card. So i RMAed it and MSI sent it back with a pass. Back to square 1. So no my computer runs 100% stable in windows but as soon as i start gaming it only lasts an hour maybe nomally less before cash reboot.
Also when in windows if using an intensive program (the only one ive found so far is Pro Engineer) it will drift in and out of responsiveness. For example i will be drawing a 3d Model and the mouse will stop responding but keep moving, then the mouse will freeze and the computer will be fullylocked up, then it will unfreeze the mouse but remain unresponsive. This will continue for a couple fo minutes then it will resume and i can continue my work but 5 minutes or less later it repeats. The mouse is not just unresponsive in the application in question but entirely in windows.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Error caused by a video device driver
Thank you for sending an error report to Microsoft.
    Error report summary
Error type    Windows stop error (A message appears on a blue screen with error code information)
        Solution available?    Yes
What does this error mean?    You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused the Windows operating system to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer.
Cause    A video adapter device driver
Computer symptoms    A message appears on a blue screen with error code information:
        STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
        - or -
        STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M
    Action for you to take
We have analyzed your error report and there are two solutions for this problem for you to choose between.
+ Solution 1: Install the most current driver for your video card
            * Go to the Microsoft Update website to see if there are any updated drivers for your video card. A driver is software that enables hardware or devices (such as a printer, mouse, or keyboard) to work with your computer. Every device needs a driver in order for it to work. If there are any drivers listed, you should install them.
            * If there are no updated drivers at Microsoft Update, and you know the manufacturer of the video card, contact the card manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
            * If there are no updated drivers at Microsoft Update, you don't know the name of the manufacturer of the video card, and you need more help diagnosing and resolving this problem, contact your computer manufacturer's product support service.
+ Solution 1: Most recent drivers
+ Solution 2: Manually decrease Hardware Acceleration for your video adapter
This is the error message i get from microsoft and i tried both of these things and they do not work. As for the sound i disabled it in the bios and tried still crash but it took longer. Now im using another card Audigy 2 value and it crashes less frequently.

  • Firefox crashes when loading Gmail, and random other pages, and freezes often.

Firefox upgraded itself to 3.6.10 sometime last Friday, I believe, and every since I cannot get into gmail, and it freezes often. When I try to log into gmail it will crash immediately. Sometimes if I click "sign in" rather than hitting "enter" it will load, but will lock up or crash within minutes or seconds. It also will lock up if I have more than three or four tabs open, often when loading a video, and crashed while loading Nexis, which I use often for work to do research.
I have disabled add-ons, disabled extensions, run in safe mode, uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted, downgraded, re-upgraded. Nothing has worked.

Problem does not seem to occur on a modern Win XP nebook with 1 gig RAM, but does on a relatively old laptop running Win 2000 with 98.5 MB ram.
Error message states that a script is running from a Firefox directory and asks to stop it. Crash occurs anyway!

  • Update to IOS 6 has been a nightmare. Facebook would allow me to save pictures unless I granted access to my foto album. Does this mean my pictures are going be planted all over the web? The safari keeps crashing and loading is slow.

update to IOS 6 has been a nightmare. Facebook would allow me to save pictures unless I granted access to my foto album. Does this mean my pictures are going be planted all over the web? The safari keeps crashing and loading is slow. Most infuriating is that YouTube was deleted from my entertainment apps and I now have to pay for it if I want it back!! This is a bloody disgrace.

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Cache and/or Connection problems under load

I have a Kodo web app that's been running just fine in
production for many months now. However, recently the web
traffic has shot up by a huge amount, literally overnight.
But unfortunately, it's caused the app to fail very ungracefully
    under the strain.
It's been a crazy few days, and I haven't been able to do
very much analysis because of higher priorities. But from
what I have been able to gleen, it now looks like Kodo is
the most likely culprit. From what I've read in other messages
here, it appears others may have been experiencing similar
    problems.
My environment: Redhat Linux 8, Postgres 7.3.4 with the
included JDBC3 driver, Apache 1.3.x, Tomcat 4.1.x and the
webapp connector. Similar behavior was seen with Apache 2.x,
Tomcat 4.1.x and the JK2 connector (that was on the new machine
I setup to handle the new traffic, which, of course, died the
    night before).
As I mentioned, this app has been running reliably for
months with no problems. But when placed under heavy load,
it appears to get into some sort of pathological state where
it slows down dramatically (asymptotically?) to the point where
it's effectively locked up. In one case, where the app was
left running for several hours in this state, requests were
taking 90 minutes to complete (normal is 1-5 seconds).
From what I can deduce, there seem to be four things
going on, three of which have been mentioned in recent threads
    here:
    1) Excessive memory consumption. When the app is
operating normally, I see fairly flat memory usage for
the JVM process. Under load, the JVM steadily expands
until it hits its heap limit. I've gotten OutOfMemory
exceptions with a heap size of 350MB, which should be plenty.
    2) Level 2 cache locking issues. I've seen dozens of
threads waiting on a lock in the DataCache code. Not sure
if there's a deadlock happening here or just that the
threads are waiting on a lock that's being held for a long time.
    3) Database Connection leaks or contention. I see threads
spinning in the DataSource code trying to get a connection.
I also see dozens of connections from the Postgres side which
seem to be sitting idle, but in the middle of a transaction.
When things get bad, I also see exceptions being thrown because
of timeouts waiting for a connection to become available. It's
a web app, PMs should not be tied up for more than a few seconds.
    4) CPU usage pegged or nearly so for the JVM. I suspect
this is related to #3. Something very bad is going on here.
If I stop all inbound requests to the JVM when it's in this
bad state, it will continue to burn CPU at 90%+ for a very
long time. I think it will eventually finish what it's doing,
but I haven't had the luxury of waiting for it. It's definitely
not a linear slowdown proportional to the load.
Attached are my kodo.properties file and some thread stack
traces along with some comments. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated. This is not a complicated app nor am I doing
anything unusual. It doesn't seem logical that Kodo could
breakdown so dramatically under load, so I'm hoping it's some
sort of interaction thing that I can work around.
    Thanks.

Please read prior posts regarding level 2 cache. It is unusable under stress
as far I am concerned. Basically entire cache gets locked on any database
    read. Makes it very unscalable
Are you using 2.5.3? It will request a connection from a pool every time it
resolves reference to a PC even if it is cached in PM and therefore Kodo
does not need to read any. As result if you iterate over 100 objects in your
query and for each object resolve reference to another object (always the
same) kodo will request 100 database connections from the pool (and note
they issue rollback on every time they return a connection to the pool so
getting connection might be fairly expensive)
In conjunction with level 2 cache contention this causes application to go
    into a stupor.
Try to go back to 2.5.2 (or may be 2.5.4 they promised in the near future
with a workaround) or use "persistent-manager" connection retention if you
discard PM after each HTTP invocation - it will take care of connection
pooling issue. As far as L2 cache I was unable to find any work around so
far - see if you might be better of without cache. You might if your object
    graph is not very complex

    With cahce enabled, 2.5.3
Here the app had recently slowed down and then effectively locked up.
There where many outstanding web requests that were not receiving output.
At this point most threads seemed to be waiting at the same location.
There were a large number of active database connections and most of
them had open transactions (according to pg_stat_activity). The app
was not responding to any web requests.
It would seem that db transactions had been started, then the thread
got stuck for a long time on a synchronization lock in the cache lookup.

    while running slow, 2.5.3
At this point, the app had been running several hours normally, then
apparently slowed down and locked up while I was away. When looking
at the app threads and database activity, everything appeared idle.
No transactions seemed to be open in the db. But the app was not
behaving normally. Web requests that did not make use of JDO worked
fine (but slow). But requests that hit the db either blocked or were
    very slow to respond.
Looking back at the log, there had been a large number of requests
that threw exceptions because they could not get a connection within
    five seconds.
Most threads were idle, waiting on read, but some were in the state
shown by the following two stack dumps. Unlike the cache threads above,
they did not seem to be waiting for a lock to be granted, they seemed
to be spinning in the connection management code. Apparently trying
to get a connection. I suspended and resumed the same thread repeatedly
and it always seemd to be doing the same thing. Single stepping was
very difficult because the debugger was slow to respond, apparently
because of other threads also busy spinning.
Postgres indicated that there where lots of connections open and
that they were all idle, so there should not have been a shortage
of connections in the pool. There are two mysteries here: 1) why
can't this thread get a connection? and 2) Why is it busy spinning?

    With cache disabled 2.4.3
This run was an accident. I inadvertently ran the app with the older
2.4.3 version of Kodo, with the cache disabled. This one got into trouble
almost immediately. It also seemed to lockup with lots of opentransactions
in the db. It's also interesting that these two threads also seem to be
hanging around the same method as in 2.5.3.

Well it came installed on my brand new Windows 8 pro w530 I received 4 weeks ago and has never worked. When you try to open power manager it just crashes. If you uninstall it the Lenovo software just keep reinstalling it. If you uninstall the Lenovo PM driver but do not reboot you can then open Power Manager. The minute you reboot the Lenovo software reinstallls the driver.
Why would Lenovo install software on a brand new Windows 8 laptop that is broken and useless? Tech support is absolutely no help they transfer you to the software department which wants to charge you to fix a problem that Lenovo created!!! It is crazy!! I was hoping someone here could solve this problem or maybe someone at Lenovo would see this and get the problem resolved. Tech support has been useless. I reported the problem to them at least 5 times.
