Super methods with reference

Given a reference to an object is it possible to call it's super classes methods?
e.g.
void foo(Object o) {
o.super.toString();
This does not work, it just calls o.toString(). I'm guessing that it's not possible even with reflection.

No. Doing so would be a violation of encapsulation and the type system. If the class wanted you to do that, it wuld have provided a superMethod() for in addition to its method().

    Change your constructor to take an argument of type String, pass this along to the super method when you call the new instance of your class in main. ie:
    public myFrame( String title ) {
    super( "Document: " + title );
    st = title; //if you need it in that String Object assign it here.
    //etc...
    public static void main( String args[] ) {
    new myFrame( "Testing" );

  • Calling A Super Method Externally

    Hi,
    I would like to call an overridden method, a super method, of an object externally. I thought all I needed to do was:
    1. get the java.lang.Class object of the super class where the original method was declared and implemented.
    2. get the appropriate java.lang.reflect.Method object from the Class object.
    3. override the java language protections on the Method object.
    4. Call Method.invoke() with the instance of the subclass which I wanted to call the method on.
    Unfortunately, when I got to step 4, I saw this in the documentation for Method.invoke:
    "If the underlying method is an instance method, it is invoked using dynamic method lookup as documented in The Java Language Specification, Second Edition, section 15.12.4.4; in particular, overriding based on the runtime type of the target object will occur."
    Is there any way to externally access the functionality of a super method implementation on a subclass that overrides it? It seems like there should be...
    In case you are wondering, the reason I am doing this is I am trying to implement a deep clone method. However, I would like any class to be able to call the deep clone method by passing themselves as an argument to a static method -- that way you don't have to worry about subclasses inheritting clone or anything like that. The code would look something like this (however it seems that according to the docs, this would result in an infinite recursion because when the Object.clone() method is invoked, it would actually resolve to the MyDeepCloneableObject.clone() method (which would call the utility function, which would invoke the Object.clone() again etc. etc.)):
    public class MyDeepCloneableObject implements Cloneable {
    public Object clone() {
    return ObjectUtil.deepClone(this);
    public class ObjectUtil {
    private static final Method OBJECT_CLONE_METHOD;
    private static final Class[] EMPTY_CLASS_ARRAY = new Class[0];
    private static final Object[] EMPTY_OBJECT_ARRAY = new Object[0];
    static {
    //Set the OBJECT_CLONE_METHOD
    try {
    OBJECT_CLONE_METHOD =
    Object.class.getDeclaredMethod("clone", EMPTY_CLASS_ARRAY);
    OBJECT_CLONE_METHOD.setAccessible(true);
    } catch (NoSuchMethodException e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    e.printStackTrace();
    } catch (RuntimeException e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    e.printStackTrace();
    public static Object deepClone(Cloneable object, int levels) {
    Object clone;
    try {
    clone = OBJECT_CLONE_METHOD.invoke(object, EMPTY_OBJECT_ARRAY);
    } catch (IllegalAccessException e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    e.printStackTrace();
    return null;
    } catch (InvocationTargetException e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    e.printStackTrace();
    return null;
    } catch (RuntimeException e) {
    System.out.println(e.toString());
    e.printStackTrace();
    return null;
    // Use more reflection on fields of clone to implement deep clone
    }

    In your example the clone method is not creating a clone, just returning a new instance of an object of the same type. In both cases the default shallow clone method should be implemented as follows:
    public Object clone() {
    //Call Object.clone()
    return super.clone;
    By doing so, any subclasses will also have their fields copied when clone() is called.
    From the javadocs for Object.clone():
    "The method clone for class Object performs a specific cloning operation. First, if the class of this object does not implement the interface Cloneable, then a CloneNotSupportedException is thrown. Note that all arrays are considered to implement the interface Cloneable. Otherwise, this method creates a new instance of the class of this object and initializes all its fields with exactly the contents of the corresponding fields of this object, as if by assignment; the contents of the fields are not themselves cloned. Thus, this method performs a "shallow copy" of this object, not a "deep copy" operation."
    Now as to how the parent is supposed to know about fields in subclasses, the implementation of clone is implemented in a native method in Object, so the JVM can pretty much know anything about the subobject as long as it has a reference to it. Further, if I wanted to make my own implementation, I could using reflection:
    public Object clone() {
    // Get the runtime class of this object, note that the runtime class
    // may be a subclass of the class in which this clone method is defined
    Class objectClass = this.getClass();
    //Get all of the fields in this class and it's super classes
    List fieldsList = new ArrayList();
    while (objectClass != null) {
    Field[] fields = objectClass.getDeclaredFields();
    for (int j =0; j < fields.length; j++) {
    fieldsList.add(fields[j]);
    objectClass = objectClass.getSuperClass();
    //Now I can create a new instance of the runtime class and set
    //all of its fields appropriately
    However, I'm sure the JVM's implementation is far more efficient.
    I have not benchmarked serialization. However, all the steps in my procedure would have to be done for serialization anyway (i.e. get list of all fields, instantiate equivalent field values and set them in the new object), but serialization also needs to convert everything to a byte representation and then parse it out again. Furthermore, serialization will perform a fully deep clone, where as I only want a one level deep clone (or two depending on how you think of it -- i.e. not a shallow copy of references (as Object.clone(0 does), but a copy of direct fields and containers (i.e. Maps and Collections in fields should be cloned, but not objects in the Maps and Collections). So if an object has a field which is a List and the List field contains 1 entry, and the object is cloned, then subsequent modifications to the List field in the cloned object are not reflected in the original object's List field and vice versa (i.e. the 1 entry is removed in the original , but remains in the clone's version of the List field).

  • Building a method with more than one result data

    Hi, everyone:
    I'm a little shy to ask this question, however, it's been hanging in my mind for so long, so I think I'd rather make a confession on it. You may laugh at me if you want, I'm ready for that, but I more look forward to that someone can really give me the light, or even the link, or some hint....
    For your ease of reading, I give the question first, and my whole story behind:
    When I need a method which can provide more than one result( in other words, multiple outputs), how can I do it in Java? As I know, either you pass and object, or the result of the function is an object will do , for the object contains the datas you want, but that means your needs for those data have to be defined in object format in advance, won't that be inconvinient? Or Java has a better solution for that?
    //And here's the whole story....
    I began my career as a programmer by starting with LabVIEW, it's a graphical programming language made by National Instrument, and it's powerful on DAQ, and industrial field. One of the most important issues on design is to devide your system into multiple functions( in its own term: subVI), I think it's just like applying structured analysis method.
    When we dealing with functions in LabVIEW, a programmer can define his own function with mulitiple inputs and outputs, for example, I can design a function called SumAndDevide, which accepts two input ( two variables to be summed and devided) and gives two results( result of summing and that of deviding).
    The methodology has its power, at least it provide the functional decomposition, and you can compose a suitable solution in certain circumstance even they are not the smallest unit function. And testing is easy. It affects me so large that I look the trail of it when I come to other programming languages. In COBOL( well, that is a VERY old COBOL version ), I was scared to find there is no protection to the inner data on the performed sections, while making a outside subroutine to be called is cubersome and really a hard work. When I came to Delphi, I knew that using the result of a function cannot satisfy me, for it give only one output, even you can define it as variant, but I think it's vague to realize. So I use the difference of called by value and called by reference to handle the problem, that is: a value parameter for the input, and a variable paramter for the output.
    Well, when I came to Java, I am stunned again, now there is no passing by reference mechanism in Java, otherwise you have to pass it as an object, but that means when you need multiple outputs, the output has to be defined in object form in advance. And that will be very inconvinient!! I tried to find some solutions, but I can't. So is there any way that in Java you can define a method with multiple output? or Java handles the problem in totally different way?
    Any comments will be appreciated!!
    Thanks!!

    You missed the most common OO solution - separation of concerns and implementation hiding.
    If you have a function which returns a string, that is one method of the object that provides the service.
    If you have a function which returns a real, that is a different method of the object.
    If both functions require common code, move that into a private method which is called by both. If the method is costly, cache the result.
    eg an aerodynamics properties class, which could be done as a multivalued return of (lift, drag), refactored to independent lift() and drag() methods, which delegate to an interpolate() method, which caches the interpolated value and uses mach, pressureHeight and _alpha to determine whether it should recalculate:  /**
       * Calculates the aerodynamic drag force at a given mach, alpha and pressure height.
      public double drag (final double aMach, final double aPressureHeight, final double aAlpha) {
        interpolate(aMach, aPressureHeight, aAlpha);
        return _drag;
       * Calculates the aerodynamic lift force at a given mach, alpha and pressure height.
      public double lift (final double aMach, final double aPressureHeight, final double aAlpha) {
        interpolate(aMach, aPressureHeight, aAlpha);
        return _lift;
      private void interpolate (final double aMach, final double aPressureHeight, final double aAlpha) {
        if (aMach != _mach) {
          setMach(aMach);
          _pressureHeight = Double.NaN;
        if (aPressureHeight != _pressureHeight) {
          setPressureHeight(aPressureHeight);
          _alpha = Double.NaN;
        if (aAlpha != _alpha) {
          setAlpha(aAlpha);
    ... actual interpolation happens in the private setXXX methods.

  • Error in modifying Schedule Agreement with reference to contract

    I have created a Schedule Agreement with reference to a contract manually.The contract is of type MK, while the SA is of type LP.
    The contract contains one Material which was successfully added to the SA.
    Now I am trying to automate the same using BAPI BAPI_SAG_CHANGE. This causes a short dump in the system -
    Runtime Errors       MOVE_CAST_ERROR
    Exception              CX_SY_MOVE_CAST_ERROR
    Short text              Dynamic type conflict when assigning references
    Error analysis
        An exception occurred that is explained in detail below.
        The exception, which is assigned to class 'CX_SY_MOVE_CAST_ERROR', was not caught in procedure "GET_CREQS" "(METHOD)", nor was it propagated by a RAISING clause. Since the caller of the procedure could not have anticipated that the exception would occur, the current program is terminated. The reason for the exception is: It was tried to assign a reference to a rereference variable using the
        'CAST' operation ('?=' or 'MOVE ?TO'). However, the current content of the source variable does not fit into the target variable.
        source type: "\FUNCTION-POOL=MEOUT \CLASS=LCL_OUT_ITEM_SA"
        target type: "\FUNCTION-POOL=MEOUT\CLASS=LCL_OUT_ITEM_CON"
    Information on where terminated:
        Termination occurred in the ABAP program "SAPLMEOUT" - in "GET_CREQS". The main program was "RS_TESTFRAME_CALL". In the source code you have the termination point in line 105 of the (Include) program "LMEOUTP2F". The termination is caused because exception "CX_SY_MOVE_CAST_ERROR" occurred in procedure "GET_CREQS" "(METHOD)", but it was neither handled locally nor declared in the RAISING clause of its signature. The procedure is in program "SAPLMEOUT "; its source code begins in line 101 of the (Include program "LMEOUTP2F ".
    The following data was populated before calling the BAPI:(along with itemx table also)
    item-item_no
    item-agreement
    item-agmt_item
    The entire logic consists of updating the contract first with a new line item and then adding a line item in SA with reference to the new item in the contract.
    The contract updation is working correctly [BAPI_CONTRACT_CHANGE].

    Hi Bahrat,
    I am also facing the same issue now. Is this issue resolved for you?

  • CREATE SALES ORDER WITH REFERENCE TO INVOICE USING RECORDING

    Hi,
    I wanted to know if it was possible to create a sales order with reference to an invoice using recording(SHDB transaction).If there is some other method please explain the method in detail(Its very urgent)

    Hi,
    You should be able to use BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2 instead of doing a BDC and you can populate the reference document in the relevant header field.

    There is an OSS note <a href="https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/370988">Note 370988 - BAPIs in SD: Creation with reference</a>
    <i><b>Symptom</b>
    This note describes the problems of the 'Create with reference' function when using BAPIs to create sales documents.
    If you are working online, you can use this function module to create a sales document with reference to an existing sales document or a billing document (for example, a debit or credit memo request) according to fixed rules. The rules for transferring information from the source document to the target document are defined in the copying control on header and item level. The creation with reference permits an item selection.
    When you use BAPIs in SD, a function of this type is not fully available. A reference is only possible for a quantity contract, so that the target quantity of the contract can be reduced by the order quantity of the sales document. Furthermore, the document flow is also updated.
    As an alternative to 'Create with reference' in Transaction VA01, two variants are provided for solving the 'Create with reference' problem in the BAPI.
          1. Create a '1:1 ' - that is, a document copy of a sales document (customer quotation, order) with 'BAPI_SALESDOCUMENT_COPY'. At this point, you cannot create the 1:1 copy of either a billing document or a delivery.
          2. Create a sales document that refers to an existing document with 'BAPISDORDER_GETDETAILEDLIST' and 'BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2'.
    <b>Other terms</b>
    BAPI_SALESDOCUMENT_COPY, BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE, BAPI_CUSTOMERINQUIRY_CHANGE, BAPI_CUSTOMERQUOTATION_CHANGE, BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT1, BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2, BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDATA, BAPISDORDER_GETDETAILEDLIST
    <b>Reason and Prerequisites</b>
    As of yet, no method exists for creating a sales document that refers to an existing document.
    Solution
    For solution No. 1
          1. Create the documents using the BAPI_SALESDOCUMENT_COPY function module. However, this only permits a 1:1 copy without factoring out individual items.
          2. After you have created the document copy, you can use a change BAPI to edit this copy.
    For solution No. 2
          1. Collect the data for the reference document (for example a customer quotation) with the 'BAPISDORDER_GETDETAILEDLIST' function module. In the example code, focus exclusively on the partners, items, schedule lines and conditions.
          2. Prepare the Data. Execute the 'copying control' manually. This way, you decide which values are to be transferred.
          3. Create the sales document using the 'BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2' function module by transferring the prepared data.
          4. Finally, you must remove a COMMIT WORK so that the sales document can be written into the database.
    An example of solution 2 is attached as a text file. You are allowed to select items and quantities for example, if you use input parameters. If there are no entries, then transfer 1:1 from the reference document. When you enter the 'condition type' parameter, you can determine whether conditions are copied or recalculated ('G' for transferring from the preceding document; 'B' or ' ' for re-determining, and 'C' for re-determining with transfer of the manual elements).</i>
    Sample : <a href="https://websmp108.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/012003146900000486112004E/BAPI_COPY_WITH_REF.txt">ZZ_MS_BAPI_COPY</a>

  • Complaint with reference to R/3 Billing Document , Items not getting copied

    Hi,
    I  have implemented BADI CRM_COPY_BADI_EXTERN for pulling billing documnets which is working fine. But when I am creating a credit with refernece to billing doc fetched all other details are getting populated except Product, description into line item level.
    I am using MAPPING_FOR_EXTERNAL_DOC for mapping R/3 values to Web UI fields. However CT_ORDERADM_I table in this method does not getting filled up with item level data as product , description etc.
    I am populating the same and modifying the table in program. However it is not populating the value in Web UI fields.
    Can anyone help as how should I populate item level values?
    Thanks,
    Madhura

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement to display the item details of complaint are created with reference of a billing document in Web UI.
    When a Returns Split is created with reference to a billing document, the item is split into multiple items based on the quantity in the source document. The BAdI definition CRM_COPY_BADI_EXTERN which we implemented for this requirement. This works fine in SAP GUI but i need to replicate the same in Web UI.
    I have implemented the BAdI definition CRM_COPY_BADI_EXTERN in read_data method, check_split_change_alv method is actually spliting the line items based on the quantity. In SAP GUI its works fine but it’s not working in web UI.
    We used a FM CRM_INTLAY_GET_HEADER_GUID to retrieve the header guid when there is call from web UI. But this FM returns zero value for guid. I’m struck up at this point.
    Please suggest how can i replicate the return split in webui too.
    Thanks,

    Hi Sanjay,
    No , its not out of box functionality in MDG. Reason being, MDG framework provided some standard API's with the help of which we can do our development with ease.
    Like Governance API                            : IF_USMD_GOV_API
           Convenience Governance API         :IF_USMD_CONV_SOM_GOV_API
           Change Request API Interface:       IF_USMD_CREQUEST_API
    With the help of which you can play around with your data in MDG with the pre-defined methods of it.

    What i did is while creating with reference to existing sale order when ever the text comes for copying i will select delete option so that it wont copied to current sale order creating, What i did is a correct way or any other method is there to stop copying the text during with reference to sale order creation.
    Thanks,

    Dear  suresh,
    As per the understanding of your requirement,
    Instead of doing that why don't you delete the text determination procedure for the document which the text is applying.
    You can use the transaction code VOTXN you select the sales document header/item in that select change.Then go to Text procedure assignment
    Hope it will be use full.
    Let me know if you have any further clarifications

    if(!l_payroll_id.equals("0"))
    Serializable[] param = {l_payroll_id,bgid,effdate};
    am.invokeMethod("initXXPaymentMethodLOVVO",param);
    else
    Serializable[] param = {payid,bgid,effdate};
    am.invokeMethod("initXXPaymentMethodLOVVO",param);
    and in the AM I am using
    public void initXXPaymentMethodLOVVO(String payroll_id,String busgrp,String effdate) {
    XXPaymentMethodLOVVOImpl xxvo = getXXPaymentMethodLOVVO1();
    xxvo.setWhereClauseParams(null);
    xxvo.setWhereClause(null);
    xxvo.setWhereClauseParam(1,payroll_id);
    xxvo.setWhereClauseParam(2,busgrp);
    xxvo.setWhereClauseParam(3,effdate);
    xxvo.executeQuery();
    Sorry for all the confusion earlier .
