Superwhite Edges

This is an issue we've noticed for some time, but have never received a response for the reason.
We notice this most with white-on-white composites. There is a superwhite (105-110 IRE) edge around the cropped or repositioned image despite the elements themselves being 100 IRE. This seems to happen regardless of codec, resolution, bit-depth (8- vs 10-bit), or "Process Maximum White as..." settings.
As an example, try this:
1.) create two White Color Solids in the timeline, one on top of the other.
2.) reposition the top Solid and render (it doesn't appear in an unrendered timeline)
3.) Look at the waveform monitor and notice the dot(s) sitting well above 100.
It is important to look at the waveform and not just rely on the canvas display as it seems the way FCP renders video to the canvas clips >100IRE levels (this is just a guess, though). It is clearly visible on broadcast (and consumer) monitors hooked up to our Kona 3 card.
Now, we know some work-arounds (3% feather, which isn't always best for obvious reasons; nesting and applying a custom broadcast safe filter, etc), but I'm really interested in what is causing this issue to begin with.
One thing we did notice is that by changing the video processing to RGB, FCP seems to clip values below 0 and above 100. However, this is a non-ideal situation as we want there to be as little conversion as possible.
System setup/specs for those interested (though it shows up on all our systems):
MacPro 2,1
2xQuad 3.0GHz
4GB RAM
ATI RadeonX1900
AJA Kona 3
FCP 6.0.5
(As an aside, this was even brought up last year by someone else, with no response: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7350402&#7350402 )

Agreed on FCPs poor keyframe/animation control. Most compositing and graphic work, we do in After Effects. But we do get these quick jobs where everything is done in FCP. And unfortunately, that's most often when we see these problems.
We'll do some tests to see how much the 'Fastest' setting will affect the in-timeline graphics.
Today I finally had the time to sit down and try to figure this out. It seems like it's a sub-pixel compositing issue. If I manage to get everything to whole pixel values in a square pixel comp, there is no superwhite line. At least now I know what's causing it, the question is, why?
I guess I can file a bug report with Apple, but I'm not sure how much attention they pay to those lately.

  • White macbook: upper case cracked at edges. Is replacement possible?

My Macbook has cracked casing edges at the front and sides. There is also some cracking at the top edges of the screen that I'm less worried about as it is not leaving anything exposed. It's well out of warranty with no Applecare, but I read on a US site (I'm in the UK) that Apple considered this a manufacturing defect and were offering a free replacement. I never received any notification of such a program. Can anyone clarify whether this was indeed the case, and if it was a time limited offer. If not, what are my options?
    Thanks

    Hi Fatjim,
It's been over a year since your post, so I hope you receive this query.
My daughter's white plastic MacBook -- about the same vintage as yours or a bit newer: Aug 2009 -- developed those well-known top case cracks about 2-1/2 years ago, within the 1-year warranty (I didn't even know about defects covered beyond that point). Was directed to a very good, nice, decent Apple support and repair store in NYC (which is a miracle, believe me!!!). No computer sales, just support. Very specialized and very personal. Completely different from other "authorized Apple" support stores in NYC. They replaced that one top piece quickly and for free. But perhaps a year later the top plate started developing new chips all over the place. I e-mailed Manny -- a terrific guy -- the person there who'd helped me before with both her Mac and mine, to ask about it, but got no reply. Maybe he missed it. E-mail is fallible. With a high schooler who "depends" on her Mac (social stuff as well), getting it out of her hands for any length of time is not easy, so I didn't pursue it further.
Now, it's 3-1/2 years old, but still functions perfectly well for all her needs and seems likely to for at least another year or more. (I know my MacBook Pro of the same vintage shows no sign of becoming "old" in any ways whatsoever.) But now her cracks, as with some other in this discussion, have extended further, and the entire frame around the screen -- directly around the screen and the entire top frame that holds the screen -- have cracks and breaks that really worry me functionally. (I have to press it down in the back after she closes it to get the top shell and bezel that hold the screen to snap back together at one, point, but there are holes, and yet new cracks forming!) I'm finally getting the courage to upgrade her machine from the Leopard OS it came with to the Snow Leopard disk that arrived with it, which I should have done immediately, but fear it will be for a machine that can't hold together. STILL...it does seem like a true manufacturing defect in all places. She's really a very careful kid.
Here in friendly NYC you'd be hard pressed to find any store that says "Apple" on it to actually do what they're supposed to do -- it's time spent on paperwork they could spend on something more profitable. Except, I hope, the one I used before, who has all our information, but has not seen me since 2010 or 2011.
My wife works for a well-heeled school that replaces all their harware every two years whether it needs it or not. To them, 2 years = out of date. But she gets her stuff for free. My daughter and I do not, and we really cannot afford to just replace the machine -- especially if it's working just fine, even with all the cracks and holes. (The economic recovery has not reached us, big surprise.)
YOUR success story caught my attention for this very reason, as did someone else's, here in the US, who mentioned a five-year period for cracked plastic on these things. So I want to clarify what you or anyone else has done.
You say you contacted Applecare. Is that right? What/who exactly is that? Who/what number do you call or what web site do you go to to find folks there who are truly helpful?
Do you need a special Applecare contract that we would have had to buy at the time the Mac was bought?
It really sounds like calling someone at the right # at Apple (esp. with their current Congressional tax problems!) might give me a "number" of some sort that I could just bring to Manny, or whoever is there, when my kid goes to camp and say:  "Here, they said to replace all this crappy plastic. Apple will pay."
Any advice or solid info from anyone would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry this was so lengthy -- putting it off so long just made it grow and grow.

  • Can I return my i phone to apple because the color at the edges are gone already after 2 month???

Can i return my I phone 5 to apple because the color at the edges are gone already after 2 month?

You only have 30 days to return an iPhone for full refund.  However, you are under warranty, so if you think this is a defect or such, take it into an Apple Store and show them and ask them about it.  If the screen is faulty, they will replace it.

  • Warranty void due to multiple dents on edges?

currently my ipad display distorted as it still have 6 months warranty so i send in for repair.
but they said can't repair only replacement.
Now they said can't replace it as it has many dents on edges so warranty voided.
that not fair i just bought it for 6 month and the dents were already there for since first month i bought.
so the distortion wasn't caused by the dents.
    Does anyone encounter such problem?

Some not insignificant physical trauma caused those dents, and Apple cannot just take your word that the dents didn't cause your problem.  Especially since the duration of time between the denting and the problem doesn't mean a darn thing.  I once dropped a MacBook Pro on the floor and, despite a big dent, it worked fine...  For a month, then the logic board finally failed.  Following physical trauma, problems can crop up at a later date, they don't have to occur right away.

  • Photoshop CC distorted image when zoomed out. Text, edges and Straight lines.

I get this distorted image when working on a file. When I zoom in its fine. But as soon as I zoom out all the lines, text , and edges start to become distorted. I've checked that all my drivers are up to date. I've re installed photoshop and still the same thing. Any Suggestions. ( files look fine when saved or exported, this just happens while Im working )

That looks like a Moiré pattern.  Did you scan the image?
If not, can you tell us what operating system?
And is your video card driver fully up to date from the maker's website?

  • Fuzzy Edges on Animated Gif

I created a very simple animation in Fireworks that loops to
a closed circle. It's pixelated around the edges and also has a
thin, pixilated white line around it. Does anyone know how to get
rid of this? I used "index transparency" on my export settings and
    left the rest at default.

Just came across this same issue in CS5.  Sometimes when you resize an image using the "Image size" function, Fireworks does not properly scale either the width or the height to the closest absolute pixel.  This creates a sub pixel which becomes apparent with exporting GIFs.  You can see the scaling issue if you throw  a 1 pixel solid hard edge border around your image: if you see a transparent gap on the outside of the border then you've got the issue & it's this that causes the GIF image to go blurry when exported.   The fix is to crop the image changing the canvas size to "absolutely" crop the image.
Generally the animated Fireworks GIFs exports are a buggy part of an otherwise great web graphic design tool:
both palettes not correctly mapping colour
frame times can go heywire in complex documents with multiple pages and states
the export of an animated gif with a document with multiple pages and states can generate redundant files.

  • Sharp edges on MacBook Pro

What chances are there of Apple changing it's sharp edge design on future Mac Book Pros? I've just returned a 13" MacBook Pro because the front edges are so sharp they left red marks on the the sides of my hands hurt after 2 hours of typing with the laptop on my lap. I know it's probably not the case if on table, but I often need to have my laptop in lap! (Which is what it's designed to do) - as I travel a lot with it. I'm a devoted Mac user - just love them - and I'm hugely disappointed by this but i't just not comfortable. I've just got a refund and will carry on with my original 1st Generation MacBook Pro (which is a great machine (lacking the specs of course) and very comfortable to use - until Mac come out with a kinder-on-the-wrists version. My partner's just got one and has the same issue and will return it. We're just hoping Mac will alter this at some point with upcoming models.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There have been numerous complaints about the sharp edges, and the best thing to do is to give feedback to Apple as sig suggests.
There is something known as a computer glove that might help should you need a new Mac before Apple gets around to changing the design.

Office Depot carries these if you want to look at one in person.

  • How to make an applet with curved edges in the browser

    Hi all,
I m doing an applet application in which i want to show an image inside a player in the website. The edges of the player is designed in curved shape. So i too wanted to do an applet with curved edges. Otherwise my applet and the images are coming out of the player... do any body have come across such a problem. please give me some suggestions. Awaiting for your suggestions and solutions. If u don't understand what i m trying to say let me know..
    Thanks...

I tried to get the screen height -1 and subtract from
all the ys in my applet but it doesnt work all the
time. I am drawing shapes and stuff with an algorithm
    I wrote for class.
is there a way to get origin(0,0) to the lower left
    screen easily.
thanksThe only way I can think of would be write a method to convert a "normal" y coord to an applet y coord. That would probably end up being a huge pain in the ass, since you would have to pass all y coords through it before using them, so I suggest you just get used to y being upside down.

  • How do I export a PDF without the print bleed extra "stuff" around the edges?

I know my question wording sucks, but I didn't know how else to put it.
I created a document in ID for print with a bleed.  When I export to PDF, the image is not cropped to the finished size of the page, but includes the excess background images that I extended beyond the page bounds for a bleed.  I am now trying to export a PDF that can be sent in email and will not be printed, and so I would like to export a PDF file that does not have any of that extra stuff (I have turned off the printer's marks) around the edges.  But my PDF has the excess stuff and a red outline around the actual page dimensions.  How do I export a PDF that is cropped to the correct page size (8.5" x 11")?
I have attached the PDF I have created with the excess stuff and the red outline around the page size so you can see what I mean.
    Thanks!
    Bryan

    Hello,
i have a problem exporting as a PDF also, i have done this before successfully and i have unchecked all the boxes to turn off bleeds etc, etc... however the bleed area is still coming through. I have tried saving the file under another name, closing down and reopening - nothing seems to work. I'd be very grateful if someone could offer some advice on this.
    Thanks!

  • How to count number of edges using PXIe-6363 Counters

    Hello,
I am trying to count number of edges in a test signal in a 50 ms duration. I am using PXIe-6363 card and connecting the test signal to CTR 0 SRC (PFI 8). Is it a correct connection? What else do I need hardware-wise to make a correct set up for this application?
    Thanks
    Jeet

    Hi Jeet,
When you say interrupt signal, do you mean a pulse that will pause your counter task? If that is the case, and you want to pause your task with a digital pulse, you need to use the DAQmx Trigger Property Node and set that to Pause, Trigger Type. As you said, you can connect that signal coming from the chip to any PFI line and then set that line as the source of the property node.
There is an example that you can use that does exactly what I just described. This example is called Count Digital Events-Pause Trig.vi, and you can find it by going to Help>Find Examples..., then on the NI Example Finder window go to the Browse tab and navigate in the folders to Hardware Input and Outpout\DAQmx\Counter Measurements\Count Digital Events.

  • Counter counts twice as many edges as it should, but correct frequency. Why?

    Hi everyone,
I am using a PCI 6122 (S Series, DAQ-STC) and Labview 7.1 on a Windows XP.  There are only two counters on this card (Ctr 0 and Ctr 1) and I need to use both of them to count edges.  While testing the counters, I am inputing a TTL signal of 10kHz to the Gate of each counter, to be used as an external sample clock, and a 20Hz TTL signal into the Source of each counter, to be used as the input signal.  Ctr 0 counts 40 edges per second, i.e. twice as many as it should, while Ctr 1 is reading the correct number of edges, i.e. 20 edges per second.
The strange thing is that when I switch the connections of Gate and Source for both counters to measure the frequency (or period), both counters read the correct frequency, i.e. 20Hz.  To the best of my knowledge, both counters were reading the
correct number of edges a couple of weeks ago.  Also, I have reset the
device several times but it does not make a difference.  I am trying to figure out why this is happening and how to fix it, but I am no closer to answering either question.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

After many tests on my own and after speaking with a NI engineer and repeating some tests over the phone, it seems like there is something wrong with the (one) counter on the board.  I have sent it back for repairs (thankfully, it was still under warranty .

  • How to get Coordinates of edges from image into excel

    Hi,
I am new to labview and I am doing a project in which i move an XY stage under a laser to etch pictures.  So far I have managed to get the stage to move by reading off coordinates from an excel spread sheet and so can draw pictures if I have the coordinates.
I am trying to use the vision module to be able to put any image in and then find the edges, get the coordinates of the edge and so draw the image.  Using the vision assistant I do colour plane extraction (to make greyscale) then use shape detection looking for lines with a small minimum length, this gets the information i want and if i click the button on the right that says send data to excell i get a spread sheet with all the information i need.  However, I cant get it to automatically save to excell (the write to spread sheet function doesnt work as "The type of the source is 1-D array of cluster of 5 elements."
It would probably be bettter if i could use the output of the vision assistant (shape detection) straight away without having to save to excell but I cannot extract the information i need from the output as none of the array/cluster functions seem compatible with the data.  I am using labview 10 and have attached my VI below any help would be greatly appreciated!

image to coords (good).vi ‏109 KB

    Hello hzub1,
It seems your having trouble getting to the information in the output of your Vision Assistant. You can use Context Help (Ctrl+H to show) to help understand the contents of a large array or cluster when you hover your mouse over the wire (see below).
Looking at the above I created the code below which breaks out all the contents of one item in the array.
Here I use the Index Array function to break out one element of the array. Each element is a circle descriptor, cluster of 5 elements so I use the Unbundle by Name function to access each of the values in the cluster
    I hope this helps,

  • Has anyone else had problems with the lack of sensitivity with the screen?  The outter edges doesn't work some times, it's very annoying and I'm curious if it's just a defect with my phone or a wide spread issue.

the edges of my iPhone 6 are not responding and I want to find out if it's a widespread issue or just a defect with my phone alone? iOS 8 I'm very disappointed

    Mine's fine.
Do the basic troubleshooting steps:  restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.  If those don't work, bring the phone to Apple for replacement. And if you put a screen protector on, take it off and see if that solves the problem.
