Suporting multiple database types in C++ x64 app using AccessDatabaseEngine?

Our software has been using the Ms access database engine (and its predecessors) for years in our C++ application.
Now we are developing a native x64 version of our application and are running in to various problems.
Basically the biggest problem is that a x64 application can't install AccessDatabaseEngine_x64.exe when there is a 32bit Office installed on the PC (or if an 32 bit version of the AccessDatabaseEngine.exe is installed)
Forcing the installation with say /passive during the engine installation can even damage 32bit installations of old applications & Office. (without /passive it does not even allow parallel installations of x32 and x64)
So, our software is using the Access Database Engine to be able to read & write .accdb, .mdb, .xls, .xlsx, .txt, .csv, .dbf 'databases'.
I'm searching for a solution how to either install the Access Database Engine x64 on a machine where similar 32bit applications might already be installed, without causing problems. (Searched far and wide but only found people with similar problems but none
with a robust solution)
Or, an alternative solution for our C++ application to open and save a multitude of database formats.
Does anyone have suggestions for either a fix or an alternative?
Marco

Someone at Microsoft wrote the extra code to prevent this to happen. It is a bad idea to get around this, I would say.
Yeah, forcing it with /passive is bad. But it would be good to have an alternative that works regardless of what other software the user has installed on their pc.
When end users want the faster x64 version of our software its hard to explain that they cant install it because of a third party software (that might not have an x64 version)
Aren't there any alternatives?

    Hi all.
    We have a requirement where we want to read a CSV file using the BPEl adapter.
    Following is the sample of csv file

    I have modified the file with some comments to have some clear understanding.
    Basically our file is a transactions file from legacy system & contains mutliple transactions
    First line will be a Header record starting "HDR" & contains all summary details about the file.
    After it is details of all transactions thorughout the day, each transaction begins with record starting "TH".As shown in all transactions above.EAch transaction can have other multiple records like the RSD & TD shown above.
    Our need is to read each transaction from the file & create an instance.How can we configure BPEL to grab the data starting with TH till it encounter's another TH.
    Please advise

    You can't use the wizard to create a schema if a file as complex as this. the good news is that you can create one yourself. What you need to do is create standard xsd that will handle your file, then what you do is add the terminators that determine when a field stops.
    Here is an example, hopefully this provides you enough infor for you to make your own.

  • Shared Services Configuration : Database type

    Hi all,
    i installed essbase and couldn't connect to sql to load the data into essbase( though it works fine with excel and text file)
    after numerous pondering on the forums I could not find a solution to my probelm
    why i could not connect to sql from essbase ?
    I decided to retry the installation . I have come to a point within installation where i need to select
    Shared Services Configuration : Database type
    unfortunately oracle is not available here though I have installed oracle 11g on my machine and setup users to be used in the epm system ( version 11.1.2)
    the only type available is the oracle jdbc driver .
    Any suggestion as to how i can get oracle database type here ?
    OR am i missing something prior to installation.

    To connect to load data or metadata follow steps
    1. Create a system DSN in the machine which is hosting Essbase Server.
    2. Select Create Rule file.
    3. Go To File and select Open SQL.
    4. Select Application and Application
    5. Select DSN and provide user credentials.
    Hope this helps.
    Database Type - Is the database Type which you want to use i.e. IBM DB2 / MS SQL Server / Oracle...
    Hope this helps.

  • Does every web client and/or app use 'significant energy?'

    Brand new MacBook Pro (non-retina,) with upgraded 2.9 ghz Intel i7, and maxed 16GB 1600 DDR3 RAM.
    So far, I've attempted to use Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.  Upon using it for more than a few minutes, or having multiple tabs open, it shows under "Apps Using Significant Energy," with the battery icon.  If used constantly, I could probably squeeze 3-4 hours of battery life before charging the laptop, which seems quite low for a newer machine.  Certainly, it's no MacBook Air, but shouldn't it see a bit more juice than that?  Only occasional videos, no constant YouTube or streaming services.  Mostly searches, jobs, etc.  I've also noticed that my installed Adobe CC programs take a loooong time to startup, but didn't know if that issue is common, or if anything can be done.
    So:
      ** are all the web applications juice hogs?  I kinda like Firefox the most, and Chrome has some neat customization features, but they all end up like little piggies in a sloth.
      ** could it be the MBP?  Would resetting anything possibly positively affect the speed, battery longevity, programs on startup, etc?
    I'm decent at tinkering if I know the proper steps to ensure I'm doing everything just right.  Also, I have AppleCare on the expensive machine, so worst case, I can bring to an authorized store- but I don't want to waste their time if this is just nothing.  I've searched the discussions forums for previous advice, and nothing really, precisely answered the issue.
    Thanks, and cheers!

    The point is you are bound to do VB.Net for web services and it is not VB at all.
    The syntax surely resembles VB but wait till you see what you have instead of good old PRINT!
    VB.Net is not a continuation of VB, it is something radically different that you will have to learn. And if I had to choose between learning VB.Net and Java/Swing, I would go for the latter. I think the third choice, C#, is definitely the winner on all aspects of programming on the Windows platform. The GUI building gap is not as wide as it was with Visual C++ and VB, in fact, it is almost non-existant: .Net's Windows-forms can be developed rapidly either with C# or VB.Net; basically you get the same tool to develop GUIs.
    All things said, there is an excellent article at http://www.theserverside.com/resources/article.jsp?l=SOAP-And-EJB discussing when to opt for SOAP in an EJB environement.
    Hope it helps.

  • ADF app, single deployment - possible to access multiple databases?

    Hi,
    I am writing an ADF app that I'd like to connect to multiple different databases. In other words the app will be deployed once on a Weblogic server and will use a parameter to connect to the appropriate database for each user session. Ideally there will be no hard coded connection details embedded within the app before it is deployed, the different potential connections should be able to be administered on the app server.
    I have been looking at Dynamic JDBC Credentials and understand it is used to connect to different database users - can it also be used to connect to different databases?
    Alternately, is there a way to switch between different JDBC Datasources at runtime?
    ADF/Jdeveloper 11.1.1.3, WLS 10.3.3.
    Cheers,
    Kevin.

    Here is my opinion, because I work with both schemas. The
    main advantage to use one datasource for all DBs in a SQL Server is
    the simplicity of administration.
    But the main disadvantage is security, because you are using
    a single user to access all DB in a server, you don't have
    isolation, and a user that knows your schema can access data of
    other DBs that he sould not be authorized.
    Another issue is is a user must access 2 differents DB with
    different permissions (a DB only read and the other read/write),
    you'll have to create another datasource, user, etc for it.
    But the decision depends in the enviroment. If you are a
    hosting company, I would use 1 datasource for user or DB. If the
    servers and DBs are of the same company, I could use one datasource
    for each SQL server.
    Best regards

  • Best way to connect java app to multiple databases?

    I'm working on my first commercial application, and I want it to be as flexible as possible, meaning I want it to be able to connect to a wide range of databases, as the customer chooses. I'm wondering what the best way is to accomplish this, I don't really want to have to buy a commercial license for third party ODBC drivers, any one have some good comments on this?

    You have two fundamental options:
    Use an O/R mapping tool like: Hibernate, EJB BMP, JDO, etc.
    Develop your own using JDBCIf you opt for the former, you should ask youself, "What value do i add? Or should I simply use these technologies?" The advantages are that dozens of other developers, going down similar routes, have faced the obstracles you will face and more. The disadvantage is that none of these developers has actually faced your specific problem. This is not to say that the solution does not already exist. The efficacy of this methodology will be how closely the general solution fits with your own (and since many problems have the same challenges, this will often be true).
    If you opt for the latter, you will have both an opportunity and a pitfall. The precise, business issue your current project addresses has many things both in common with other projects and also a handful of unique challenges. The hard part is determining whether this challenge actually differs in some fundamental way, or whether you have discerned some fault or opportunity in your methodology compared to standard (or even cutting-edge) practices.
    In reality, the challenge of "connecting to numerous, heterogenous (and probably vaprous) database systems" has long been addressed. Addressed, but perhaps not solved. If your goal is to develop a class library, for personal or consulting use, or to increase your understanding of the O/R boundary and best practices to obviate it, then my best advice is to read existing literature, and give it your all. There is no right answer here, and building on an existing experience of failure and success is indispensible.
    If your aim is to solve the O/R mapping challenge, or to suppant JDBC BMP, Hibernate or JDO, then my hat is off to you. We are all eagerly awaiting that day. (Sadly, after much effort, it has not yet arrived).
    So, can you connect Java to multiple databases, and even a diverse array of RDBMS vendors? Of course! But what will you do with those conections?

  • Handling multiple database with 10g CONSOLE

    Hello list,
    How do we handle multiple databases with 10g Enterprise Console?
    We are running Oracle 10.1.0.2.0 on Windows 2003 server. I have one database setup but I need to install more databases and am having difficulty accessing and managing the second database. thanks for your input.

    may be you can try the following:
    1) create a file named new_target.xml with the following:
    <Target TYPE="oracle_database" NAME="DBAPV9.WORLD" DISPLAY_NAME="DBAPV9">
    <Property NAME="OracleHome" VALUE="/opt/oracle/app/oraadm9i/product/9.2.0.4"/>
    <Property NAME="UserName" VALUE="sys" ENCRYPTED="FALSE"/>
    <Property NAME="password" VALUE="thepassword" ENCRYPTED="FALSE"/>
    <Property NAME="Role" VALUE="sysdba"/>
    <Property NAME="MachineName" VALUE="machine.domain"/>
    <Property NAME="Port" VALUE="1521"/>
    <Property NAME="SID" VALUE="DBAPV9"/>
    </Target>
    replace as appropriate
    2) Execute emctl config agent addtarget new_target.xml
    3) Execute emctl stop dbconsole
    4) Execute emctl start dbconsole

    Is it not possibe to run a FR report by select members from multiple databases in a single grid??
    Please have your valuable inputs.

    Yes it possible to retrive data from multiple database using single grid.
    Also there are few limitations namely:
    Database connections must be of the same type (for example, both must be Essbase database connections or both must be Financial Management database connections).
    Mismatched number of dimensions in the database connections may cause retrieval errors.

  • Ipad 4: how do I attach multiple file types to an email?

    Hello,
    I have seen multiple threads on this topic saying you can only do attachments in an email (other than photos or videos) by going to the app that holds the file and emailing it from there (ex: go to adobe reader or ibooks to email a PDF). This work around seemed sufficient for some people but I have need to attach a JPG, PDF and .doc to a single email. How do I do this within the ipad's built in email app? Is this impossible and if so are there other free email apps that someone can reccmmend?
    I find the ability to only email files from within its parent app to be cumbersome and not in keeping with Apple's style of making one's life easier and more efficient. In fact this seems woefully backward and goes back to the early days of computing. I get it that emailing from within a particular app is necessary but so is the ability to attach multiple file types from within the email app. :-(
    So frustrated!!

    The GoodReader App can manage files and create emails consisting of multiple files types.

  • Multiple database users, ORM, entity framework, best practices

    Hello everyone!
    You've already helped me several times, however I must ask for an advice once more.
    I was assigned to develop .NET application with Data Access Layer and I've decided to use Oracle Database Software to provide sample data.
    As I'm absolute novice considering creating DAL I'd be grateful if you can examine my plan in terms of security and reliability:
    My database:
    1) I've created database with sample tables and relations between them. All tables belongs to databaseAdmin.
    2) I've created HR and Manager database users and granted them some privileges on certain databaseAdmin's tables. My intention is to reduce access to unnecessary tables. If my application user want to make some changes to Customers table it should be enough to connect to database as HR.
    And now I'd like to map my database using Entity Framework in my application. And that's where I have a problem:
    -If I create Entity Model basing on databaseAdmin tables I get perfect model, however every Entity SQL query would be executed on behalf of databaseAdmin, which breaks my idea of hiding unnecessary tables.
    -If I create Entity Model for HR and Manager users, my models could overlap on tables that both users have access to and no connection between tables would be generated (as from their point of view those tables are just some tables that belong to databaseAdmin)
    Could you help me with this deadlock? Or maybe my assumptions about multiple database users are incorrect? Please, bear in mind I'm a novice.
    I was trying to find a solution in web, and there're tons of data discussing technical aspects of Entity Framework etc., but not so many documents about conceptual model of database.

    hi Michael,
    Thanks for you posting!
    Sorry for I am not totally understanding your issue. Maybe two points need your confirm:
    1. I confuse with the "Service controller"? IS your meaning MVC controller? Or ServiceController(http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/31688/Using-the-ServiceController-in-C-to-stop-and-start
    2.whether  The type of ID in the model is match to the database ? In other words, Is the type of IDin .edmx matched to the database?
    By the way, it seems that this issue is more related to EF. You could post this issue on EF discussion for better support.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Local Database Options for Windows Store Apps

    I am looking to create an application that will allow for entry of data from a user and write it to a database file system locally within the application.
    I am new to Windows Store type app development and are a senior developer for ERP systems for the enterprise which have rich databases and client apps that are built with a MVC type configuration. The app communicates with the database which is on the DB
    server (Oracle, IBM DB2, or SQL Server) and writes to the file system.
    For my startup applications I would like to have a simple CRUD type interface that writes to a DB that is part of the application and does not require a connection to a file server or DB server.  Internally I would like something with a few tables,
    etc.. that I can write to and then report from locally.
    In the Windows 8x development world, what is the best method and technology to use for Store Apps for this scenario?  What is the best approach?

  • T-SQL: Manual Backup of Multiple Databases

    I am looking to change the way I do manual backups of multiple databases on the same instance of SQL Server 2008 R2.
    Currently I have T-SQL scripts for each database that look like this:
    BACKUP DATABASE [mydbname]
    TO DISK = N'D:\backup\manual\2014-01-01_1618\mydbname_2014-1-01_1618.bak'
    WITH NOFORMAT,
    NOINIT,
    NAME = N'mydbname-Full Database Backup',
    SKIP,
    NOREWIND,
    NOUNLOAD,
    STATS = 10
    GO
    But there are six of these scripts, one for each database. Now in another language and my past programming experience I would just use an array of database names and a loop, so that BACKUP DATABASE would only exist once in the script, but be executed multiple
    times, once for each database name in the array.
    I have such a very limited understanding of T-SQL, but I am guessing there is a completely different paradigm for the equivalent of, say, a for loop.
    I'd also like a solution where the date_time directory for the output of each backup to be dynamically generated. Instead of having to pre-create the dirs myself.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I don't understand why you haven't been answered directly considering the simplicity of the question you are asking.  Maybe it's because I'm the only truly "old school" DBA left.  I don't use the GUI based maintenance or performance tools included
    with SQL Server not because I'm "old school" but because every time I've tried the results have been mediocre at best and in an environment where critical data is on the line mediocre doesn't cut it.
    Since I've had this type of tool in my "tool box" for more than a decade allow me to share what I typically do in this type of situation...
    declare @DatabaseName nvarchar(50),
    @DynamicSQL nvarchar(4000),
    @FileNameDate nvarchar(18)
    declare Database_Cursor
    cursor fast_forward for
    select d.name
    from sys.databases as d
    where d.name in ('MyDB1', 'MyDB2', 'MyDB3', 'MyDB4', 'MyDB5', 'MyDB6')
    open Database_Cursor
    fetch next
    from Database_Cursor
    into @DatabaseName
    while @@fetch_status = 0
    begin
    set @FileNameDate = cast(year(getdate()) as varchar(4)) + '-' +
    right('00' + cast(month(getdate()) as varchar(2)), 2) + '-' +
    right('00' + cast(day(getdate()) as varchar(2)), 2) + '_' +
    right('00' + cast(datepart(hour, getdate()) as varchar(2)), 2) +
    right('00' + cast(datepart(minute, getdate()) as varchar(2)), 2)
    set @DynamicSQL = '
    BACKUP DATABASE ' + quotename(@DatabaseName) + '
    TO DISK = N''D:\backup\manual\' + @FileNameDate + '\' + @DatabaseName + '_' + @FileNameDate + '.bak''
    WITH NOFORMAT,
    NOINIT,
    NAME = N''' + @DatabaseName + '-Full Database Backup'',
    SKIP,
    NOREWIND,
    NOUNLOAD,
    STATS = 10'
    print @DynamicSQL
    --execute sp_executesql
    -- @DynamicSQL
    fetch next
    from Database_Cursor
    into @DatabaseName
    end
    close Database_Cursor
    deallocate Database_Cursor
    There are two items you need to change in the above script to make it do precisely what you are asking...
    This should be obvious but you need to change the where clause in the cursor definition to include the 6 databases you want o backup instead of leaving it as "where d.name in ('MyDB1', 'MyDB2', 'MyDB3', 'MyDB4', 'MyDB5', 'MyDB6')"
    I've commented out two lines of code in the script.  Those lines actually run the backup statements which are built by the cursor.  The lines I'm referring to begin with the "execute sp_executesql" statement.  I've commented those lines out
    because you'll need to test the code prior to using it.  The code as designed will output the backup statements it procedures allowing you to verify it.
    I hope that helps.

  • Multiple database in the same ADF application

    In my application I have to access a legacy database, in addition to the main database. How do I handle multiple database connections. Do I need to manage the JDBC connection to the legacy database myself.
    Pranab

    Use an AM for each dataconnection and then share the AMs so then can see each others datamodels.
    Or you can use jdbc in your code to access the databases.
    If would be nice if the adf had a way to connect to any data source set up in the configuration and app server on the fly.

  • Multiple Database configurations with Hibernate and caching

    Hi,
    I am building an webservice app which has 2 different DBs( Oracle and DB2). Please let me know whats the best way of designing the hibernate layer to access both the DBs ; I have some cross reference tables in both of them.
    I am planning to create a logical model of the physical DB model ( combining both Oracle and DB2) and use property files or some configuration to map my logical to the actual physical table. What would be the best design for this? Do you recommend caching these conversion values?
    Please let me know the best practice / way to work on my above situation.
    fyi - I am neither a novice nor an expert in J2EE.

    I have the same experience. I can connect to the database of the inital setup but then I try to create a second DB connection with
    Create the connection

    Everything seems fine but when I try to access the second db I get:
    http://vs-dapp041.maximusbchealth.local:7501/apex/edwdev1 => 404 not found
    I am going to be at Open World next week and see if I can talk so someone at the apex stand there.
