Does every web client and/or app use 'significant energy?'

Brand new MacBook Pro (non-retina,) with upgraded 2.9 ghz Intel i7, and maxed 16GB 1600 DDR3 RAM.
So far, I've attempted to use Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.  Upon using it for more than a few minutes, or having multiple tabs open, it shows under "Apps Using Significant Energy," with the battery icon.  If used constantly, I could probably squeeze 3-4 hours of battery life before charging the laptop, which seems quite low for a newer machine.  Certainly, it's no MacBook Air, but shouldn't it see a bit more juice than that?  Only occasional videos, no constant YouTube or streaming services.  Mostly searches, jobs, etc.  I've also noticed that my installed Adobe CC programs take a loooong time to startup, but didn't know if that issue is common, or if anything can be done.
So:
** are all the web applications juice hogs?  I kinda like Firefox the most, and Chrome has some neat customization features, but they all end up like little piggies in a sloth.
** could it be the MBP?  Would resetting anything possibly positively affect the speed, battery longevity, programs on startup, etc?
I'm decent at tinkering if I know the proper steps to ensure I'm doing everything just right.  Also, I have AppleCare on the expensive machine, so worst case, I can bring to an authorized store- but I don't want to waste their time if this is just nothing.  I've searched the discussions forums for previous advice, and nothing really, precisely answered the issue.
Thanks, and cheers!

The point is you are bound to do VB.Net for web services and it is not VB at all.
The syntax surely resembles VB but wait till you see what you have instead of good old PRINT!
VB.Net is not a continuation of VB, it is something radically different that you will have to learn. And if I had to choose between learning VB.Net and Java/Swing, I would go for the latter. I think the third choice, C#, is definitely the winner on all aspects of programming on the Windows platform. The GUI building gap is not as wide as it was with Visual C++ and VB, in fact, it is almost non-existant: .Net's Windows-forms can be developed rapidly either with C# or VB.Net; basically you get the same tool to develop GUIs.
All things said, there is an excellent article at http://www.theserverside.com/resources/article.jsp?l=SOAP-And-EJB discussing when to opt for SOAP in an EJB environement.
Hope it helps.

  • Creative Cloud is always listed under "Apps Using Significant Energy" in OSX Mavericks

The Creative Cloud app always seems to be listed under "Apps Using Significant Energy" in OSX Mavericks. Is this normal behavior? Is there something that CC is doing in the background that requires it to draw energy? Thanks for any insight anyone can provide.

I've been having the same problem, it's not a Mavericks thing as it was doing it previously, it's using the discrete graphics some times and that's what uses the energy.
It's not consistent either, right now I'm on integrated graphics but randomly it'll switch to discrete with Creative Cloud shown as the dependancy (I use gfxCardStatus to keep an eye on what's happening), I can understand when PhotoShop etc are running but just the installer app???
I asked Adobe on Twitter a couple of months back but it got ignored. Would like an update as I use battery power a fair amount and CC controll app sapping my all important battery power for no good reason is a bit off.
I like the CC concept and how frequently things get updated but perhaps take a few days longer and get things tested in house before you release them, I've only just got CC working again after the last disaster of an update, please take a little care Adobe, this stuff is important to us.

  • What to do about Apps using significant energy

Does anyone know about the battery monitor and how to fix problem apps?  If you click on the battery icon at the top of the screen and wait a few seconds, it will tell you which apps are using a lot of battery.
I am often surprised when my lpatop starts to get warm when I am doing simple web browsing for example.  I look at the battery icon, and it shows me soemtimes 2-3 apps running in background that are "Apps using signficant energy".
When I google this, it suggests starting and stopping the problem app to see if it fixes the problem.  A number of apps inclduing Micorosft Word and PArallels come back and use the battery.  Most recently, I did not realize that I had accidentlaly opened up a word window and then clicked to close it. So word was at the screen, "Do youwant to delete this file" and this was showing as 100% in the battery monitor when I went in to check later.
I like that we have the battery monitor... It would be nice if tehre was a way to tune the problem apps...  good option for Maverick OS 10.10!!
Is anyone else having similar challenges with rogue apps!!??
I will put this in as a problem request to Apple as well as this has also happens with Numbers and Pages in background.

This is just for your info so that if you have an app that is running that you are not actually using, you can quit it.
The biggest power hog though on a MacBook Pro is the discrete graphics card.  If you have one in your book, you may want to use gfxCardStatus (http://gfx.io) to disable it unless you actually need it.  On my MacBook Pro, I get about 8 hours with the card off and usually about 4 when its turned on since I use apps that force the use of the discrete card f installed.

  • What does VPN DO? And how to use it ?

What does VPN DO? And how to use it?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn
Or Google 'what is a vpn' or 'how to use a vpn' many people have explained this better than me.
In short it wraps your traffic in to an encrypted link to a server (normally on the internet). Then the traffic leaves that server & goes onto the public internet. It is possible for the link to reveal information about you, but a VPN can protect you on open wifi or on bad networks etc.
Sometimes the VPN terminates inside a corporate network, so users can do work at home securely.
It is similar to using https for web browsing (secure http makes traffic difficult to intercept & read).

  • Not able to see the accessories in IC Web Client and Web shop

    Hi All,
we have configured Method Schema  for Product accessories and maintain the accessories in product master.
I am facing an issue where in i cant see the accessories in IC Web Client and webshop.
Any input will be a great help.
    Thanks in advance.
    DV.

I'm answering this only because I just ran into this yesterday.
Apparently, the Accessories you add to the Product Master have to be added to the item in the Product Catalog.
In the Item view of the catalog, click on the Edit List of Accessories button.  The accessories that you added to the Product Master show up on the right side of the window.  Select the accessories you want to show on the Webshop (and I assume IC Web Client) and click the move (left arrow) button.  Save, replicate, etc...
Now, if someone knows how to avoid this step, please share it, as I find it annoying that while I can get the accessories to the Product Master easy enough, I can't get them to the Webshop without an extra step FOR EACH ITEM in the catalog(s).

  • Spotlight using significant energy

So I have a brand new MacBook Air (had it less than a week), and the Spotlight app shows up as using significant energy (hovering around 100) almost constantly. And it doesn't appear to be doing anything. Is that normal?

    Step 1
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds | tail | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
    mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
    You can then quit Terminal.
    Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful.

  • Safari using significant energy

    Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could help. I have noticed my battery draining quicker than usual. I clicked on the battery icon and it said that safari was using significant energy. It has never done this before so I am wondering why now, and is there nay way to fix this? I am running all current versions of yosemite and safari and have a mid 2014 mac book pro.
    Thanks for your help

Back up all data before proceeding.
Quit Safari if it’s running. Then select
               ▹ Force Quit…
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Safari may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
    Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
              Caches/com.apple.Safari
              Caches/com.apple.Safari.SearchHelper
              Caches/com.apple.SafariServices
              Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess
              Caches/com.apple.WebProcess
              Caches/Metadata/Safari
              Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginHost.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist
              Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If the problem is solved, stop here. Close the Library folder. If you still have a problem, continue.
    Step 2
Move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (again, some may not exist):
              Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
              Internet Plug-Ins
              Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.Safari.*.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.Safari.Extensions.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist
              PubSub/Database
              Safari
              SyncedPreferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Here, "*" stands for a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes.
Note 1: You are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”
Note 2: This step will remove your Safari extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to reinstall them, do so one at a time, testing each time to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
Try again. Your settings and bookmarks will be lost. The default set of bookmarks will be restored. Delete them all.
If Safari is now working normally (apart from the lost settings), look inside the “Safari” folder on the Desktop for a file named “Bookmarks.plist”. Select
              File ▹ Import Bookmarks...
from the Safari menu bar. Import from that file. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Safari again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were, overwriting the newer ones that may have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the files you deleted in Step 1. Stop here and post again.
If you don’t like the results of the last step, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you moved or deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place.

  • Client/server RMI app using Command pattern: return values and exceptions

I'm developing a client/server java app via RMI. Actually I'm using the cajo framework overtop RMI (any cajo devs/users here?). Anyways, there is a lot of functionality the server needs to expose, all of which is split and encapsulated in manager-type classes that the server has access to. I get the feeling though that bad things will happen to me in my sleep if I just expose instances of the managers, and I really don't like the idea of writing 24682763845 methods that the server needs to individually expose, so instead I'm using the Command pattern (writing 24682763845 individual MyCommand classes is only slightly better). I haven't used the command pattern since school, so maybe I'm missing something, but I'm finding it to be messy. Here's the setup: I've got a public abstract Command which holds information about which user is attempting to execute the command, and when, and lots of public MyCommands extending Command, each with a mandatory execute() method which does the actual dirty work of talking to the model-functionality managers. The server has a command invoker executeCommand(Command cmd) which checks the authenticity of the user prior to executing the command.
What I'm interested in is return values and exceptions. I'm not sure if these things really fit in with a true command pattern in general, but it sure would be nice to have return values and exceptions, even if only for the sake of error detection.
First, return values. I'd like each Command to return a result, even if it's just boolean true if nothing went wrong, so in my Command class I have a private Object result with a protected setter, public getter. The idea is, in the execute() method, after doing what needs to be done, setResult(someResult) is called. The invoker on the server, after running acommand.execute() eventually returns acommand.getResult(), which of course is casted by the client into whatever it should be. I don't see a way to do this using generics though, because I don't see a way to have the invoker's return value as anything other than Object. Suggestions? All this means is, if the client were sending a GetUserCommand cmd I'd have to cast like User user = (User)server.executeCommand(cmd), or sending an AssignWidgetToGroup cmd I'd have to cast like Boolean result = (Boolean)server.executeCommand(cmd). I guess that's not too bad, but can this be done better?
Second, exceptions. I can have the Command's execute() method throw Exception, and the server's invoker method can in turn throw that Exception. Problem is, with a try/catch on the client side, using RMI (or is this just a product of cajo?) ensures that any exception thrown by a remote method will come back as a java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException. So for example, if in MyCommand.execute() I throw new MySpecialException, the server's command invoker method will in turn throw the same exception, however the try/catch on the client side will catch InvocationTargetException e. If I do e.getCause().printStackTrace(), THERE be my precious MySpecialException. But how do I catch it? Can it be caught? Nested try/catch won't work, because I can't re-throw the cause of the original exception. For now, instead of throwing exceptions the server is simply returning null if things don't go as planned, meaning on the client side I would do something like if ((result = server.executeCommand(cmd)) == null) { /* deal with it */ } else { /* process result, continue normally */ }.
So using the command pattern, although doing neat things for me like centralizing access to the server via one command-invoking method which avoids exposing a billion others, and making it easy to log who's running what and when, causes me null-checks, casting, and no obvious way of error-catching. I'd be grateful if anyone can share their thoughts/experiences on what I'm trying to do. I'll post some of my code tomorrow to give things more tangible perspective.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to read, I know it's long.
Secondly, pardon me, but I don't see how you've understood that I wasn't going to or didn't want to use exceptions, considering half my post is regarding how I can use exceptions in my situation. My love for exception handling transcends time and space, I assure you, that's why I made this thread.
Also, you've essentially told me "use exceptions", "use exceptions", and "you can't really use exceptions". Having a nested try/catch anytime I want to catch the real exception does indeed sound terribly weak. Just so I'm on the same page though, how can I catch an exception, and throw the cause?
    try {
    catch (Exception e) {
         Throwable t = e.getCause();
         // now what?
}Actually, nested try/catches everywhere is not happening, which means I'm probably going to ditch cajo unless there's some way to really throw the proper exception. I must say however that cajo has done everything I've needed up until now.
Anyways, what I'd like to know is...what's really The Right Way (tm) of putting together this kind of client/server app? I've been thinking that perhaps RMI is not the way to go, and I'm wondering if I should be looking into more of a cross-language RPC solution. I definitely do want to neatly decouple the client from server, and the command pattern did seem to do that, but maybe it's not the best solution.
Thanks again for your response, ejp, and as always any comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Adobe cc will not sign in, even through i am in both the web portal and desktop app.

i have three machine, a work station at the office and home as well as a laptop that is for going on locations. the problem is cc is working perfect on both workstations but just recently it will not activate on my laptop. i've tried just about everything. it gives me "sign in failed please make sure you are connected to the internet or change your time settings". I'm defiantly connected to the internet, i can browse my cc files online, download and install apps and even talk to adobe chat about this issue, everything but use the actual applications ie:photoshop, lightroom and aftereffects. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, logging out of cc on all machines, deleting my OOBE folder, my opm.db as well as checking certificates. nothing has worked. i can't sign in because it says my id is in use, and i cant deactivate because it times ou@@t on every atempt. please help point me in the correct directions as this has been very frustrating.

thanks john, did not know they could remote in, they were able to jump on and find the issue, all through i had wish they just went straight to looking at my system instead of having me jump through the same hoops i had already gone through. adobe gave me a case number, but i guess the number does not keep a record of the steps i've already taken to try and solve my issue, that said it doesn't matter my laptop is working and in time for my next job. re-leaves alot of stress.
