Support for o/r in Oracle 8i tools

Support for object types in the Oracle 8i administration tools seems to be limited. For example, I can't select an object type for a table column in DBAStudio. However, I can define types and tables using types through SQLPlus.
What fails is to reference object members through the dotted notation in SELECT or UPDATE. For example
SQL> select emp_ext.att_ext.NAME from emp_ext;
gives me an error:
select emp_ext.att_ext.name from emp_ext
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00904: invalid column name
The name attribute is part of the type definition, I can insert objects into the column, but can't use the structure in queries and updates!
Anything I'm missing? Any special settings for object types in SQL required?
Thanks,
Thomas

Thomas,
You need to use table alias for this:
select E.att_ext.NAME from emp_ext E;
Notice the 'E' here.

  • Support for using TNSNAMES with Oracle Thin Driver?

    Hi.
In the official Oracle JDBC FAQ (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_faq.htm), they say that from the "10.2.0.1.0" release, the Thin driver hast support for using TNSNAMES entries. Thus, you can use URLs like this:
jdbc:oracle:thin:@GL (thin driver, but connection info defined in tnsnames.ora)
Does anyone know how could I use an URL like this? Do I have to install the Oracle client? or can I simply copy a tnsnames.ora file someplace on disk and specify its ubication through an environment variable or something like that?
I haven't find util information in the Oracle site....any ideas are much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I just found some info here:
Re: Thin Driver and Load Balancing

Find a contact within Oracle to help get you introduced to the Product Manager(s) for the area of interest. Ways to find that contact:
    - Oracle Sales (ask your/university sales rep for an intro)
    - relevant Oracle Forums (watch for responses from Oracle employees)
    - Oracle Wiki
    - Oracle Open World where you can meet lots of employees

  • Support for 11x17 paper in Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler 4.0.0.833

In last versions of the version 3 of this product the ability to print your data model on 11x17 paper was included by default.  This support was even in some of the beta 4 version of the data modeler.  But, in the release of the production version for this tool, the 11x17 paper printing option has dissapeared from this product.  Can you please add this back into your product because those of us with large data models but no plotter need this paper size.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
What printer do you use? You need to set it as default printer for your system and you should get ledge size as option if the printer supports it.
Otherwise you can print diagram to PDF file and then you can use Adobe reader or Foxit reader to print to separate pages - it's poster in Adobe and scaling type "tile large pages" in Foxit

  • Bad support for ts hint in Oracle jdbc driver (for preparedStatement)

    hi
    I have the following SQL
    SELECT TRUNC({ ts '2004-01-01 00:00:00.0' }) FROM ET1_ELEMENT
With the jdbc.odbc driver the following meta data is returned:
    ResultSet meta data are...
    Column [1]
    name [TRUNC(TO_DATE('2004-01-0100:00]
    type [93]
    class name [java.sql.Timestamp]
    which is fine.
Nevertheless with Oracle thin driver I got an SQL exception:
    The SQL Error is:
ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected NUMBER got TIMESTAMP
    internal exception:
    (class java.sql.SQLException):
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00932: inconsistent datatypes: expected NUMBER got TIMESTAMP
If I use the TO_DATE in the sentence (e.g. t_date('2004-01-01 00:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')) everything is fine on both driver.
Any idea on the problem? Is it a bug?
    Thanks

    Mikael,
I couldn't ascertain your environment from your post, so the below may be irrelevant for you. But in the hope that is isn't...
I tried your example on an Oracle 9i (9.2.0.4) database on SUN [sparc] Solaris 9, with J2SE 1.4.2_04 and the "ojdbc14.jar" [JDBC] driver. If I remove the "trunc" function, then I do not get an Oracle error. I must admit, though, that I don't understand why you need to trunc(ate) a literal value. All that the "trunc" function does is set the time part -- the hours, minutes, seconds, etc. -- of your timestamp to (all) zeroes -- which is what you have in your literal, anyway, so why the need for "trunc"?
I believe the Oracle JDBC driver converts the java sql-escape syntax -- "{ts '2004-01-01 00:00:00.0'}" -- to a call to the "to_date" function, anyway. Possibly one way to verify this would be to use P6 Spy. If I am correct, then it would only be logical that Oracle allows you to use the sql-escape syntax wherever it is all right to use the "to_date" function. But then again, I guess that
    select trunc(to_date('2004-01-01 00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI')
from   ET1_ELEMENTis allowable syntax anyway. So I guess maybe that this may be a bug in the JDBC driver. Have you checked the MetaLink Web site?
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Support for VPD Policies in SQL Developer?

I've searched the GUI, the help and the google (TM). Is there support for VPD Policies in Oracle SQL Developer. Examples of things would be to enable and disable them, create new ones, etc.

Not as such, but you can always manage them through worksheet statements.
You can request this at the SQL Developer Exchange though, so other users can vote and add weight for possible future implementation.

  • Support for fail over/clustering?

Is there any support for fail over/clustering Oracle on a two-node Linux cluster? Is it even possible to run Oracle on a two-node Linux cluster?

To add more, I'm unsure whether an HA product is even needed once Oracle Releases Parallel Server. Also, is it possible to run Oracle w/o Parallel Server on a cluster? If so, what does that buy you?

  • Support for .chm format?

is there support for .chm format in oracle text or are there any plans to extend support for other document formats?

CHM isn't supported out of the box:
    http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/text.101/b10730/afilsupt.htm
Depending on how much you need it, you can implement a custom external filter to manually parse your CHM, as discussed here:
    http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/text.101/b10729/ind.htm
    Hope that helps

    Hi,
The upcoming release of JDeveloper (3.2) has support for SCM. In this release, support has been integrated with Oracle's own SCM product, Oracle Repository. In future releases, other SCM products (e.g. CVS) will be supported.
When JDeveloper 3.2 is released (should be available at the end of Nov / start of Dec), the installation guide will have full details on how to install the Oracle Repository and use the SCM integration in JDeveloper.
In 3.1 or earlier, a custom addin exists for JDeveloper that can be used to support SCM systems (see JDeveloper documentation on OTN). However, this is not as tightly integrated as the new SCM support coming in 3.2.

  • Suggestions for the Oracle Developer Tools for VS2005

I'd like to start a thread for constructive feedback of the Beta version of these Oracle Developer Tools for VS2005.
First off, check the known issues here before posting:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/dotnet/odt10202rn.html
    So, here are my issues:
    - In the Oracle Explorer, when you right click on a large table and click "Retrieve Data..." it hangs the IDE until an apparent timeout value of 30 seconds, then shows a message box stating that "The query is taking a long time. Would you like to continue" ...waiting? I think the better approach here is to follow MS. In Menu Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> DataConnections, there is a setting to limit SQL results to x number of rows. I think ODT should do one of the following. 1. Read this value and apply it. OR 2. Hardcode a value of 100 - 500 rows. 3. Add a setting similar to MS in the Options...
    - In the Oracle Explorer, when you right-click on a view and click "Design..." the code for the view opens, but is not very readable because the line breaks are interpreted a little boxes. After dumping it into a hex editor, you can see the little box characters are Linefeeds (Char(10)). If these are all replaced with Carriage Return+Linefeed (Chr(13) + Char(10)), and pasted back into the editor in VS2005, it works perfectly. Note: My Oracle 9i Server is running on the Linux platform.
    - I know this is a known issue, but this one's a biggie for me. Drag and drop is not supported from Oracle Explorer to the XML Schema Designer. Will Drag-and-Drop of tables generate TableAdapters as well with the Fill methods?
    - Pre-existing Triggers don't seem to be visible in the Oracle Explorer.
    Thanks,
    -Tony

    Hi
I am new to Oracle but not to VS. I have downloaded and installed the newest tools for Developer, having first tried the install for VS2003.net (which refused to install on my VS 2005.) I got the beta download and installed it, but my oracle explorer shows nothing. Any attempt to add a connection results in an error ORA-12560:TNS:protocol adaptor error. I had the full install of 10g r2 on my notebook, but removed it and opted for the XE version. I removed the Oracle_Home environment variable prior to installing XE. I am trying to connect to the HR database, and the account is unlocked. I saw a reference to the tnsfiles file, and that seems to be the problem, but I don't know what to do about it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer help.
