Supporting IE5 & 6
I am creating a new site for myself, its going to be the site I use for offering development..
I realised quite early on that the template I have built, with the tiniest little conditional to center it works with IE5 and IE6.. I thought since it seems to work with them, no point in not trying to support them
I have hit upon an issue that only happens in ie5 and 6, basically images repeating or something like that at the bottom of divs
this is how they look in all other browsers
and this is my code if anyone has any ideas.. thanks

Have you tried removing the height of 10px and keeping the <divs> open with a non breaking space (as below) OR actually inserting the images directly within the <divs> themselves rather than as background images?
<div class="left_bottom"> </div>
<div id="left_foot"> </div>
Not quite sure whats wrong with your code but theres a few thing in it that's foreign to me and I usually have no trouble getting things to render correctly in all browsers, i.e., not sure I like the idea of setting a <divs> height to only 10px. Divs may have a minimum height required to work across all browsers.
If you do insert the images directly within the <divs> then you most likely will need to add the below to your css:
img {
display: block;
This should kill an IE bug which inserts space between two images directly where one is on top of the other.
No defining position is needed for the <div> containers within the 'left' <div>, they just follow on in the natural flow of the code. Using redundant css attributes only server to make trouble shooting difficult.

Supporting IE5.0 for EP6SP2 ?
Hi,
some of our portal users try to access the pages with msie5.0. As a result, they get lots of runtime error popup windows an the pages cannot be displayed.
Visiting SAP Portals such as "help.sap.com" or "service.sap.com" there are no problems with this browser version though the portal availability matrix describes that only IE 5.5 or greater is supported.
How can I reach the support of IE 5.0 for our portal ?
Has anybody experience ?
Thanks in advance
Ralf VielsackHi Serge,
thanks for your reply. I know that it will be the best way for the visitors of our portal to upgrade their browser version.
For the company internal use of the portal - no problem. But in a few weeks, we want to integrate our company home page into the portal (anonymous users) an then I have no control which browser version the visitors of the portal pages use.
I wondered how does SAP solve this problem... (service.sap.com / help.sap.com)
As a result I don´t recommend to use SAP Portal for home pages published world wide because lots of users cannot use it due to their older browser versions.
Perhaps in a few months when I know that more than 90% of the used browsers are IE 6.0 or greater...
Thanks in advance for further help,

Installing Flash on Win2K & IE5
We are developing a Flex web portal and have a client
refusing to upgrade their machines or their browsers. They are
running Win2K with IE5 (they also don't want to install flash, but
we told them they "have to" do that if they want our product).
The sys reqs for Flash 9 indicate that it supports IE5 on
Win2K. So I installed a vanilla Win2K and have set about trying to
install Flash 9. The getflashplayer download page wouldn't work at
all (IE gave me an error) so I had to search the support pages to
find the installer package.
I've installed the Flash9 archive package (with installers
for everything) as well as the small "ActiveX" installer package.
Each of these packages runs quickly and indicates success.
Flash Player shows up in Windows Add/Remove Programs.
However, browsing to any flash enabled page fails to work and
the adobe page fails to recognize any version of flash installed.
I've modified the various security settings for IE to enable
ActiveX. I've uninstalled and rebooted between each attempt.
I'm running Win2K version 5.00.2195 and IE5.00.2920.
Can somebody give me additional thoughts/suggestions? I want
to keep this box as vanilla as possible to replicate the client
situation, but I also need to know the bare minimum required to
actually install a functioning version of flash.
Thanks in advance.Hello belarm,
The online installer you mention is not for distributing in the manner you are attempting. It is simply a shim installer that downloads and installs Flash Player silently in the background.
Based on the information provided, you'll need to obtain a distribution license (free) to distribute Flash Player within your organization. The Flash Player Administrator's Guide provides the information you need to license the Flash Player (chapter 1) and various options of distributing Flash Player (Chapter 3), as well as a myriad of other details on administering Flash Player within your organization. The Guide is available at Adobe Flash Player Administration Guide for Flash Player 14 | Adobe Developer Connection.

Spry Menu background is white in IE
I've created a vertical Spry menu with submenus. The menu should not have a background color, so it should take the color of the image it's on top of. This looks fine on Safari (Mac) and Firefox (Mac/Windows), but on IE 8 (Windows), the menu background is WHITE. This makes it difficult to see the menu items. What can I do so that the menu background is transparent and does not show up white in IE?
The site: http://chrysacupuncture.com
I'm attaching index.html, my own css file, and the Spry css file.
Thanks for your help.Actually, now that I look at it, I think one of your IE hacks might be malfunctioning:
/* HACK FOR IE: to stabilize appearance of menu items; the slash in float is to keep IE 5.0 from parsing */
@media screen, projection
ul.MenuBarVertical li.MenuBarItemIE
display: inline;
f\loat: left;
background: #FFF;
This is the bottom-most item in your CSS file. Notice the typo in the float:left and that it does indeed state a white background background:#FFF. I don't usually put IE hacks external CSS, you might try moving it to the main HTML file and using IECC. Place it in the header as you would if you had internal CSS:
<!--[if IE 5]>
<style type="text/css">
ul.MenuBarVertical li.MenuBarItemIE
display: inline;
float: left;
</style>
<![endIf]-->
I removed the background color altogether, but you may have to define one (I don't usually support IE5 so I'm not sure).
If you insist on having this hack externally, you can try placing the background: transparent in the first item of your CSS:
ul.MenuBarVertical
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
list-style-type: none;
font-size: 100%;
cursor: default;
width: 9em;
padding-top: 80px;
background: transparent; -
I'm trying to build a site based on "template design #1" which is from this page: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/dreamweaver_custom_templates.html#templat es
And Im trying to make a sticky header following the tutorial on this page: http://www.noobcube.com/tutorials/html-css/fixed-header-footer-layout-a-beginners-guide-/
In the stylesheet, before ".bannerArea .container" I put:
#header-wrap {
position: fixed;
_position: absolute;
top: 0;
left: 0;
width: 100%;
And in the source code:
<body>
<div id="header-wrap"></div>
<div class="bannerArea">
But it's not working. So, any suggestions as to how to make a sticky header for "template design #1" would be appreciated.All modern browsers support fixed positioning.
Pre-IE7 browsers don't support fixed positioning on anything other than the <body>. So if you must support IE5.5 (obsolete) or IE6 (fewer than 10% users worldwide), use the workarounds described below:
http://alt-web.com/DEMOS/CSS2-Sticky-Footer.shtml
IMO browser compatibility warnings are a waste of time. I never pay attention to them.

I said earlier in this thread:
"Links hidden through the use of "display:none" helps
keyboard navigation
but are not accessible to AT. Neither to Google. And that's
why my
horizontal menu is a solution, because it addresses a
specific problem,
because it makes keyboard navigation possible while exposing
all links in
the menu. There is no perfect word. That's why there are many
solutions."
Please don't tell me you haven't even read the article and
you're not
reading my posts either because it would make this whole
thing worse! ;-)
So, the menu works the opposite of what you said actually. It
does *not*
make all links "accessible" and that's why I offer a "plan
B", not just for
keyboard users but also for *people using Internet Explorer
with scripting
disabled*.
You say your approach is to "make the top-level items in our
menu real links
to main section pages", that's fine, but once people get to
these pages,
*how do they access* the sub-menus? Unless you reveal them on
each one of
these main sections pages - as I do - they are *not*
accessible, period.
They do not exist for keyboard users nor for IE users with
JS-off. And of
course I'm talking about doing this using nested lists, not
*disconnected*
elements.

LOL
Don't tell people I need more than one rule, I'm the one who
pointed to the
fix: ttp://www.tjkdesign.com/articles/msie5mac.asp
Also, my stylesheet takes care of styling all lists
horizontaly in case
there is no JS support; and for *each* page (using different
color for each
one), to make sub-menus *accessible*. For sure that does
require more rules,
but it does make these links accessible :)
It's easy to say that a stylesheet is "lighter" if it does
not even do half
of the job. Please do not compare oranges with apples.

Actually, browsercam screenshots would *not* reveal that bug.
If you say you don't have it "anymore" then I take your word
for it and I
won't bother checking in my old Mac, but last time I checked
you had that
bug; and when I mentionned this on the WSG 10 days ago it was
there too.

In your own way ;-)

How to configure Oracle National Language Support for Hindi
Hello
I am Working on one library project and right now it is in foxpro.
it is working in local(hindi) language using c-dec software.Now i want to run this project using oracle national
language support.i have done lots of rnd on that but till could not get success.what's wrong with that?
Following the step i am applied for that
1 I have create the database using in8iscii character set. Because In8iscii support the Hindi Language.
2 Set the variable NLS_LANG = hindi_india.in8iscii in environment. I am using the Windows 2000 OS because
it supports the Hindi font(Mangal).
3 I am using the Oracle Developer as front end so using mangal font in front end i am able to display data
in Hindi format that's why i am selected Windows 2000 os.
4 I have done the special setting in Windows 2000 for Hindi.it is in controlpanel-regional setting-click the indic option
for india and in input locals set keyboard layout as Hindi also.
5 I also changed the Init.ora file and add the NLS_LANGUAGE = Hindi
nls_territory = india. now, I opens the database using this Init.ora file.
6 But It can't display the data in Hindi format.I could not able to display the data in Front End also.
So,pls help me in Oracle and also guide me in Linux platform also.
nullHi Nimit,
I have tried inserting Hindi/Marathi into an Oracle database (I have tried versions 8.0.6 and 8.1.7).
I created the database using UTF8 character set. The NLS_LANG was set to AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8. Inserts into the database were via iSQL*Plus or import. For querying I used OCI and Pro*C. The data for my app is being served up as XML. I have not tried Developer. The DB platforms have been both HPUX and Win2K, while the client platform has been Win2K/IE5.5 SP2. I have been using Code2000 as the font.
Did you manage to view the stored data using the export utility ?
Also, you can try using yudit to edit unicode files on Linux. -
Can I safely delete the contents of Content.IE5?
I'm running MacOS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and using Bootcamp 3 (I think) so run Windows XP SP3. My Bootcamp drive is formatted in FAT32, There is a hidden folder in Windows called Content.IE5 where, as I understand it, Internet Explorer stores all of its temporary files. My folder has grown to over 700 MB, and it doesn't get any smaller when I click on the delete temporary files button in IE.
The folder itself is invisible in Windows, but I can see it when I navigate through the Bootcamp drive in Mac OS.
I found two links regarding this problem, one from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;301057
http://www.paessler.com/blog/2009/04/17/prtg-7/how-to-get-rid-of-huge-default-us erlocal-settingstemporary-internet-filescontentie5-folders
As the second link explains, there are severral issues that make it quite difficult to clear the contents of this directory, such as the fact that it belonds to the "default user" and the fact that it is always in use. But as a Mac user running Bootcamp, I have the ability to navigate directly to the directory while running Mac OS and delete the contents manually which otherwise is not possible when running in Windows! My question to the community is should I do it? Or rather, has anyone else attempted this, and if so, did you brake anything in Windows or did it all turn out honky dorey?
Many thanks.Thanks. The clip in the events folder is in Apple Intermediate Codec.
A clip from the same video in the Original Movies folder is also in Apple Intermediate Codec but with larger pixel dimensions. I'm assuming this isn't H.264 as you mentioned should be there? See attached images.
The original movie is shot in 1080p AVCHD. But when I imported it into iMovie I did so at the iMovie optimised 920 x 540px as most movies I edit will only ever appear online for the moment (I do archive original HD footage from important footage to the iMovie Camera Archives for future use). -

Print from applet running in IE5.5
Application is standalone and can be used as applet as well. If it works as standalone application everything works fine. When I put it on a Web server and try to run it as applet from within IE5.5 it hangs. The problem is in the part of code that invokes printing, without it applet works fine.
I know the problem is that applet cant invoke printing if it isnt signed but in that case it should throws exception not hangs at the very beginning. Also, applet cant be closed without closing IE5.5.
public void printGraph() {
PageAttributes pa = new PageAttributes();

pa.setOrigin(PageAttributes.OriginType.PRINTABLE);

if(printJob != null) {
int xmargin = 30;
int ymargin = 30;
Dimension printArea = printJob.getPageDimension();
printArea.width -= xmargin;
printArea.height -= ymargin;
for(int i=0; i<ja.getCopies(); i++) {
Graphics g = printJob.getGraphics();
if( g != null) {

SecurityManager sm = System.getSecurityManager();
if( sm != null) sm.checkPrintJobAccess();
printGraph();
} catch (SecurityException e) {
System.err.println("Printing is not allowed.");
I hope someone knows what is the problem.
Best regards
GoranThe problem is in the version of java (1.1.4) IE5.5 supports by default on WIN2K platform.
This version doesn't support the PageAttributes and JobAttributes classes and method getPrintJob(Frame f, String name, JobAttributes ja, PageAttributes pa).
The getPrintJob(Frame f, String name, Properties pr) method that is supported since jdk 1.1 can be used instead
Sorry I didnt mention os platform and java version. -
Layer Background color not support on AP Element
Hi I am new to dreamweaver. I just started learning how to
use it, and I can't figure out why when I am validating the
browser, I kept on getting a message that the layer background
color is not supported in the AP element. I looked at my code and
it seems fine. All I did was just insert the AP layer and I change
the background color. Is there something I am doing wrong?Thank you. That's telling you that layer-background-color is
NOT supported
in those browsers (in fact, it's invalid HTML, being
supported only in IE5
and earlier). You should use CSS to specify colors, not the
Property
inspector, and you will avoid such traps. In fact, in CS3,
when you use the
Property inspector, the proper CSS is written in the
stylesheet for you.

Safari supports HTML 4.01?
Try to open http://www.factorial.ru/test.html with Safari
And try to do this with any other browser.
You see differences?
Safari best browser? LOLHTML 5.0 Browser support isn't here yet.
I no longer concern myself with obsolete browsers like IE5, Netscape 4,5,6, etc...)
Murray's right. Use the doc type that matches your coding skills/project requirements. I work with media files quite a bit so I typically use XHTML transitional. If I'm doing something that doesn't play nice with XHTML, sometimes I'll step down to HTML strict or transitional because I like to produce valid code whenever possible.
Do use the W3C code validation tools. Especially when things go wrong and you can't discern why on your own.

Swf object/embed issue in IE5.2 on Mac
I have embedded a flash swf file inside a table. It displays
and is positioned just fine across most platforms/browsers EXCEPT
for on a Mac in IE 5.2 and it's driving me insane. In IE5.2 on a
Mac, the flash movie plays OK, but it is not positioned inside the
table (which is inside of a layer). I've tried putting the swf
inside of a nested table but that didn't work. I'm at a loss. Can
anyone suggest a workaround?
Here
is my page
Any help is much appreciated,

All of the divs on your page are absolutely positioned. I
don't see a
single relatively positioned one. But be aware that one
doesn't just switch
absolute for relative without invoking an entirely new layout
model. It's
not like a toggle.... Here is some of your CSS -
#layActivities {
position:absolute;
left:14px;
top:-176px;
width:350px;
z-index:9;
visibility: hidden;
height: 300px;
#layAccom {
position:absolute;
left:16;
top:124;
width:400px;
z-index:10;
visibility: hidden;
height: 300px;
#layAbout {
position:absolute;
left:416px;
top:36px;
z-index:7;
overflow: hidden;
width: 750px;
height: 325px;
visibility: hidden;
#layLocation {
position:absolute;
left:16px;
top:124px;
width:400px;
z-index:11;
visibility: hidden;
height: 300px;

gif as the anchor
Uhh - clearly you don't understand how relative positioning
works. Relative
positioning takes its base location from the coordinates of
the nearest
positioned ancestor container. You cannot relatively position
to an image.

Perhaps I am not looking at the correct page? But anyhow, a
layer is not
relatively positioned as far as DW is concerned. Layers are
only absolutely
positioned elements.

Yes. Using CSS or not, there is no way to prevent someone
from resizing
your text.

Unequivocally, no.

See discussion above.

Does Oracle support FIXML Schema handling / Parsing in 10g ?.
If the following link information is correct, then it appears the xml is wrapped in the FIXML which is defined by the DTD or xmlschema.
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/godlewsm.GODLEWSM-SVR/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.IE5/S69LGP64/293,35,FIXML: Example Syntax
If you can register your schema then you should be able to load in the instance documents. -
Hello applet not running in IE5
I am using a simple helloworld app and am trying to display in IE5. However all I am seeing is a blank page. The app runs fine using appletviewer. Is this a conflict of JVM and Microsoft VM or is there a setting I haven't seen in IE? I am running NT4 with JS2E sdk.
While I'm posting here, maybe some advice from some of you experienced programmers out there. I have been programming for about 7 years. My experiences are primarily in VB, though I have programmed in most of all mainstream languages except for C. All of the OOP I have gained is through using VB's approach to OOP. Can I get some advice on how to adjust to the programming style of java as well as OOP? What was the hardest thing to overcome making a dramatic switch from VB to Java?
thanksAs for the applet, it is very possible that there is a conflict with the JVM in IE. It will only support Java1.8 or so. So you can't use any swing components - just AWT. One thing to do is turn on the JavaConsole and take a look at the output. (You have to turn on the Java Console through Tools->Internet Options...) Another is to download the latest Java plug-in.
As for Java and OOP, take a look at Bruce Eckel's on-line book, "Thinking in Java".
