Suppressing IE Address Bar (Location Bar) - Weird event

Hi. We use the following code to call other stand-alone web forms from a single, main application. Each application has it's own web.show_document code. In the example below a call to a form name 'dropper_em' is called.
It also passes the username and password in the call and it specifies several options for controlling the IE window it opens the called form in - most importantly location=no. This option keeps the username and password from being displayed when the new form opens:
WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT ('javascript:void(window.open("http://9.35.32.205:7777/forms/frmservlet?pageTitle=Dropper E/M&config=TTMSMENU&form=dropper_em&userid='me/mypass@mystring'","","resizable=yes,location=no,toolbar=no,menubar=no,status=no,"));self.close()','_blank');
However, on one particular computer when the new form is opened the location bar is not shown, but instead what appears to look like a Internet Explorer drop list item is displayed - and it's displaying the entire URL including the username and password!! We have many other users who are able to open the form without this problem.
What in the world could be causing this issue for only 1 user? Help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know anything about hiding the address bar, but I hope this application does not contain sensitive data as including the username/password in plain text in the URL (whether it's visible or not) is not very secure...

  • I can no longer access websites through the location bar (address bar).

A few days ago, my location bar (address bar) suddenly stopped working. When I typed in an address and clicked on Enter, nothing happened - and I mean nothing. The cursor at the end of what I had just typed into the location bar just sat there, blinking at me. Clicking on the arrow at the right end of the location bar didn’t work either. On the other hand, if I clicked on a link in a website or e-mail, I would be taken right to the website at the other end of the link. And when I clicked on a bookmark, I was taken to the bookmarked site. It is only when I type or paste something into the location bar that I am unable to reach the sought after website. Exiting and then re-entering Firefox did not help, nor did rebooting my computer. I was using version 6.0.2 at the time. I upgraded to version 7.0.1; that didn’t help either. Help!!!

That is a signature symptom of the "AVG Safe" extension in the Link Scanner component of AVG Free, but you don't have that extension on the computer you posted from, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions
There is also these which you don't have either

Try disabling the Foxit PDF creator as it has an ask.com authorship signature.
If that doesn't work see if Firefox works in Safe Mode. If it does it is probably an extension problem.
    # Restart in (Firefox) Safe Mode with Help ("Alt+H") > "Restart with Add-ons disabled" to restart immediately (one-time) in safe mode. Do not check-mark any of the items (they are certainly not safe as they make those changes permanent).

  • Using Firefox 4.0 Beta 4. When I open a link in a new window, the web address does not show in the location bar. Why?

When I open a web page link in "a new window" the link opens, but the web page information does not appear in the location bar. It is blank. If I open the link in a new tab, there is ho problem.
Further, if a open a link from the tab without a location in a new tab on the same window and then go back to the original tab, the location bar fills with the web address.
Have done this starting in several locations, so it not location dependent.

That behaviour is likely top be caused by an add-on, and in your case the likely culprit is IE Tab 2, the various versions of IE Tab have caused problems with Firefox 4 beta including issues with the location bar not being updated.
You can test to see if IE Tab 2 is causing your problem by disabling it and then seeing if the location bar in a new window shows the address. If it is not that add-on causing the problem, see [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
For info, the IE Tab Plus add-on has been updated recently to improve compatibility with Firefox 4 beta, you may want to try that one instead. The latest version is available from http://coralietab.mozdev.org/installation.html

  • When typing an address in the location bar and pressing enter, nothing happens and the site does not load. How can I fix this?

When I type a new URL in the address bar (or location bar), and I either type the complete URL or select from the drop down list, nothing happens. I hit enter, and the website does not load in the current tab, new tab nor in a new window. Exactly the same when I hit the green arrow to the right of the address bar. I am using Firefox 8, and all my add-ins are up to date.
It has been working before. The setting to get Firefox to open new pages in a new tab from the address bar is there, so it should open a new tab. But I get nothing at all!
Please help, how can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    James.

That issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. How can I resolve this?

    Question
When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. When I swap to private browsing firefox allows me to anter the website address directly into the location bar - but this is a slow [prcess to swap back and forth - also by dint of using private browsing I loose my website information.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Every single website, or link within a website page is being added to my location bar/address bar drop down menu. How can I stop this? This just started happening.

Every single website url address, or url address within a website page is being added to my location bar/address bar drop down menu.
I don't want everything added or saved in the location bar. Only urls that I used a lot used to be saved there but now every single url (and url within a url)I visit is being added to it.
How can I stop this? This just started happening.
I'm sure it's a simple browser setting but I've checked and nothing gives an option to control this.
    Firefox 3.0.17
    Windows XP

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.17) Gecko/2009122116 Firefox/3.0.17

A possibility is to open the links via the right-click context menu or a middle-click in a new tab to make sure that Firefox sees them as regular links.

When I type a web address in the location bar and hit enter nothing happens. In order to go to the website I've typed in, I must click the arrow button at the end of the location bar. How do I make it so that hitting the enter key takes me to the web page.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Since Firefox 4 Beta installed an update

The AVG addon seems to have caused the problem for me. I had it disabled and everything worked. Then I updated to AVG 2011 and the problem occurred. It seems to have reenabled itself after the update.
Just disabling it solved the problem.

  • When I click on a link the address does not display in the location bar in the new tab. Which makes the back/forward button and refresh buttons unable to be used

When opening a link any link from firefox address does not display in the location bar. Even when navigating forward from there the address does not show back/forward button and refresh all rendered unable to be used

  • Clicking on the downward arrow at the right end of the location bar no longer displays the drop-down list of sites visited, bookmarks and addresses typed in location bar

Since I upgraded to Firefox version 3.6.10, clicking on the downward arrow at the right end of the location bar no longer displays the drop-down list of sites visited, bookmarks and addresses typed in location bar. My Tools > Options > privacy setting is to save history, and if I start typing a previously accessed website's address in the location bar, then the full address appears as a drop-down item. But not when I just click at the right end of the bar.

You can try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Address/Location bar, forward-back buttons are not shown

Address/Location bar, forward-back buttons are not shown in my browser. How can I make them visible?

If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear
    * Make sure that the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
    * If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
    * If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

  • I followed directions of arrowing down and hitting delete, but cannot get certain addresses out of by address/location bar. What am I doing wrong? I also have not been able to figure out how to move existing bookmarks into folders.

I am running Windows Vista, Firefox 3.6.13, on a 18 month old HP a6700f. I read the embedded help, but the instructions for deleting addresses doesn't work and it doesn't tell how to move existing bookmarks to a folder.

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sorting_and_rearranging_bookmarks_-_Firefox
Entries in the location bar drop down list with a yellow (blue on Mac) star at the right end are bookmarks.<br />
You can remove such a bookmarked item that shows in the list if you open that url in a tab and click the yellow star in the location bar.<br />
This will open the Edit This Bookmark dialog and you can click the Remove button to remove the bookmark if you want to remove such a bookmarked entry.<br />

  • Is it possible to have the Navigation Toolbar (or at least the pop-up Location Bar) show automatically when I open a (blank) new tab and be automatically hidden once I select an address/search?

I'm obviously aware of the possibility to show/hide the Navitation Toolbar manually, but I'd like to have it done automatically to get the best of screen space and navigation ease.

Thanks cor-el! I had tried that out, but was turned off by the different workflow (can't click Tab to select the address suggestions) and assumed by the look that I couldn't use my Smart Keywords for searches.
In fact, the workflow isn't that much bulkier and the Location Bar is fully functional:
    * ''for a search: Ctrl+L, (Smart Keyword +) [search terms], Enter''
    * ''for a suggested address: Ctrl+L, Down, Enter, Enter''
Still, it would be nice in future versions if:
    # the Location Bar could automatically open when opening a (blank) new tab (just as the cursor automatically goes to the Location Bar when a new tab is opened with the Navigation Toolbar showing) to avoid the Ctrl+L step of the workflow
    # the Tab, Enter workflow could be enabled for selecting address suggestions in the pop-up Location Bar
Or (most simply in my mind):
if '''the Navigation Toolbar could be set to show when a (blank) new tab is opened and disappear once an address/search is selected'''.

  • Location bar does not go to address when I press enter

I've just upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1. When i click on an address or type in an address in the location bar and press ENTER on my keyboard, it doesn't take me to the address, the tab stays blank like i've not done anything. I have to click on the little arrow key at the right hand side of the location bar for it to go anywhere!
How do i fix this? I've been in to the Tools>Options menu and checked the box that says "When i open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" but this hasnt done anything.
    Thank you

AVG Safe Search has been known to cause that problem. Disable it (Add-ons, click on it, click "Disable") and restart Firefox, then test.
Check with AVG for an update.
