Suspend to ram resume issue with Asrock Q1900-ITX
Hi,
I encountered a strange issue with suspend to ram while setting up a new small home server with an Asrock Q1900-ITX board. If I suspend the system and wake it within a few seconds everything works fine. However, if I wait a couple of minutes or even more, instead of resuming the system it takes a few seconds to think and then it reboots instead. It doesn't matter whether I resume via the power switch or with wake on lan. I tried several bios settings, the stock kernel as well as LTS and I even used an Ubuntu Live CD to check whether this is an arch issue. However, with the latter the system does not reboot it simply gets stuck. Power is on but nothing happens.
What is strange though that it works on all these platforms if there are only a few seconds between suspend and resume. Any ideas?

I just bought an Asrock Q1900-ITX last month. It seems to have issues when rebooting that may be part of your problem.
Overall the motherboard specs seem pretty good. It has 2x sata3, 2x rear usb3 ports, and an on board usb3 connector. The processor is an integrated quad core Celeron CPU J1900 @ 1.99GHz. I have added a 4G stick of memory, a 10/100 usb2 Ethernet adapter, and a 64 G usb3 thumb drive. It runs a headless setup of Arch's Simple stateful firewall; replacing my ancient WRT54GL Linksys router/firewall. I power it using an old 20 pin picoPSU plugged into the 24 pin power connector. It only draws 10 watts of power at the wall outlet.
There are a number of posts I found on the booting issue, including patches in the kernel mailing list, so hopefully better support will come soon. For me booting is at least consistent. I use the efi boot with csm bios option enabled. If I do a systemctl reboot the computer hangs after the grub loading kernel, initrd messages. Press the reset button and booting is successful. If I do a
systemctl poweroff followed by a wake-on-lan the computer will boot normally.
I thought at first the booting issue was because I had /boot/efi/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi and /boot/efi/EFI/arch_grub/archx64.efi files and the bios couldn't deal with that configuration; the bios would loose the 1st boot drive setting. I just went with only the /boot/efi/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi but still have the booting problem.
To get the wol function working I think I had to change the legacy options in the bios. Sorry, I can't remember exactly what they were. After getting the wol working I tested the suspend to ram which worked fine. I am not sure is these legacy options would fix your suspend problems but maybe. Could you check what journalctl -b -1 shows after you try to suspend to ram. Also do you run the nfs client? I had a problem with suspend on another computer that editing the nfsmount.conf file fixed.

HP dv3510nr suspend-to-ram / resume SATA issues
I'm trying to get suspend to ram working on my HP dv3510nr.. The problem is that when it resumes, the SATA drive seems to error out and cause the file system to fail. I've tried s2ram -f with a few of it's options, and pm-suspend. Neither resume properly (Actually, from the dmesg output it looks like it doesn't suspend properly either). Suspend takes about 30-40 seconds, but resume takes about 3-5. I have installed a Patriot 32GB SSD drive on this machine. I'm wondering if that can cause something like this. I am also using dm-crypt w/ aes-xts encryption for /dev/sda2. This maps to /dev/mapper/root, which is an ext4 partition. /dev/sda1 is an encrypted swap partition that gets setup on each boot by /etc/crypttab.cd

Suspend to ram stopped working with Acer Aspire 5930G - Arch64
Suspend to ram recently stopped working on my laptop running Arch64. When ever I press the suspend to ram button in kde4 simply nothing happens, no screen flashing or error messages of any kind. I tried to install the pm-utils package and run pm-suspend, but with the same result. The program just ran and nothing happened and no feedback, not even in dmesg.

in the future, i would definately use yaourt to upgrade since it displays better what is being updated and from where.

Ram Preview Issue with Yosemite
Hi, I have updated to OS X Yosemite, I am using AE 13.1.1.3, and now I am having an issue with RAM-Preview that makes working with AE problematic: When I start the Preview by hitting "0" on the Numpad the Ram Preview starts, but I am not able to stop it anymore until it has rendered to the end of the work area.
It is also strange that I am able to move keyframes while it renders.
The Shift-Ram Preview is also affected by this bug.There is a known bug with Yosemite and the RAM preview, but your issue sounds different. Anyway, see the known issues here: After Effects good to go with Mac OSX v10.10 (Yosemite)

New RAM and issues with apple hardware test
I just upgraded to 4gb of Samsung memory in my Macbook Pro. I had several issues with the computer continuously rebooting. I went into Apple Hardware Test and tested the memory. One of the dimms failed immediately so I pulled it and tested the other. It seemed to just go to around 6-10 minutes and just not do anything after that. The cursor still moves but nothing else.
I had them replaced with Samsung original even though the computer came with Nanya. My previous Macbook Pro had Samsung and I had good luck with it. This is a Santa Rosa platformed 2.4 Ghz version with the 7200 rpm 160 gb hard drive. I'm also running Leopard but that should be independent of the apple hardware test since the OS is not required to boot into it.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
ThanksEvidently its not freezing. It just doesn't update often. Its at nearly two hours now. I wasn't giving it enough time to run.

Suspend to RAM with KMS enabled and ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M
Per this thread, I added the file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d to disable glx in order to continue booting with 'nomodeset' to disable KMS after today's updates. I've always had to boot with 'nomodeset' so that suspend/resume will work properly (I get a black screen/freeze on resume from suspend to ram). However, with this fix, my screen redraws are happening MUCH slower than before the update. Anyone have KMS enabled AND suspend/resume working with an: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE)?

Suspend + KMS have been working starting sometimes in the 2.6.35 series.
My guess as to why you can't suspend, is your BIOS/motherboard, nothing else.

Hi. I would like to ask for your advice. I have problem with suspend to ram. In order to have nvidia drivers i had to install newest kernel, 3.12.xx. I found that suspend to ram doesen't work. I put my computer in sleep mode by typing
sudo systemctl suspend
, everything works, computer goes in sleep mode but after resume from it, after wake up i have only black screen with unblinking cursor on the left upper corner of screen. I can't kill x, can't do anything in tty, only hard reset.
I removed nvidia drivers in order to check older kernel, and found that with nouveau drivers kernel 3.9 works, i can suspend and resume. I did another thing. I installed clean Arch, updated it with pacman -Syu, and installed nvidia drivers - the same problem with resuming from suspend. So on fresh and updated system i removed nvidia again, installed old kernel with nouveau - suspend works with resume.
Could somebody help me? Maybe you can point me to a solution? I would like to have nvidia drivers installed and working suspend with resume from suspend to ram.

I don't see anything wrong here. I asked on polish site about kernel 3.12, and with Ubuntu they said it works. Why on Arch only kernel 3.9 works with resuming from suspend to ram and olny when there are no nvidia drivers (because they need new kernel, i could even use old but i'm not so exprienced to compile kernel myself, won't do that, and with downgrade script from AUR i didn't found nvidia driver for older kernels. There are old kernel, even 3.0.xx but only nvidia drivers from 325 that they need 3.12 kernel).
My spec is AMD X4 955, NVIDIA GTX260, 4GB ram. Arch is x32, kernel 3.12.5.1 (other don't work with resume too, only 3.9 with nouveau).

With newer kernel it just doesen't so if this would be a nvidia MSI problem than i would have it also on kernel 3.9.8.1 where i installed newest drivers ( i installed binary because i don't know which package from aur would work with this kernel, and on aur thare are only drivers from 325, no older).
Edit - just as i said. Doesen't work. It is not related to nvidia because it happens on nouveau. It is kernel fault.

Suspend to ram works with powersave daemon but resumes on lid open
Is there any way to modify this behavior? I have a T60 and utilizing the powersave daemon my suspend to ram works fine, but I can't find a way to stop it from resuming when I open the lid of my laptop. I am using the stock 2.6.19 kernel.
yea just strange because in XP this behavior doesn't occur, so I figured it wasn't bios related (newb assumption?) i'll look into the above assumptions.
it doesn't bother me all that much, it probably truly only interferes once in a while, but i guess it is a control issue. after all, if you dont have control under linux, then where else would you? haha. especially if winxp is getting the job done. heh

And the power led flashes as it does (hp dv6-2xxx) to tell me that it's sleeping nice and cozy on ram. But, i press the power button. Big mistake.
The CD in the drive (i keep one in for when i test something like this...helps a little bit) spins up, and gets read, so I'm guessing the system gets called back up, but my screen ends up blank, with no power going through it. Then i have to force it off, remove the battery, put the battery back in, and wait for a long boot into arch again, with no saved data.Could be an issue with the graphics card. From the log it seems as if you are using the opensource ati driver. Personally, I never had luck to get resume to work with this driver, but my card was too old for the closed source driver. The symptoms were the same as yours, the machine would suspend or hibernate, but failed to wake up.

Suspend to ram -- wake up issue
I got my computer to go to sleep ok when I shut the lid but it's having some issues waking up. When it wakes up I can get back to X and type some commands but something is not right and I can't pinpoint it. For instance the terminal window will freeze on issuing a ping command. Note that I know I'm using /dev/sda -- I don't have a /dev/hda on my laptop for some reason. Pc doesn't resume from suspend to ram anymore (new 3.4.2 kernel)

I was using nouveau without problem and with the little trick of using acpi_os_name="Microsoft Windows NT" kernel parameter, I was able to suspend to ram from gnome, and resume the pc without problem
Not anymore. Now, if I suspend to ram, the pc does not resume. It correctly wake up the dvd drive, the hard-drive, began to read stuff on the hdd but the led of the power button stays blinking and the screen is not waken up.
I am thinking this is due to the update of nouveau and a new regression but this seems related to the bios or hardware. For example. If after the broken resume, I hold down 10 seconds the power button to power off, and press it again to power on, the led is still blinking and it does not boot. I need to power off by removing the power cord.
Is it because I run (to test it) the nvida-173xx, and that did something to the graphic card ?
Did anyone got similar problem with the new nouveau driver ?
I tried to downgrade libgl, libdrm, libdrm-nouveau, nouveau-dri, xf86-video-nouveau and mesa but I still got the problem. so ?

After upgrading to kernel 3.4.2 or so, my system doesn't resume from suspend, only black screen and cannot switch to other ttys.
I first thought this problem be caused by the kernel, but downgrading nvidia to 295.53-2 solved this problem on kernel 3.4.3 so this likely is caused by nvidia 302.17.
In my case there is something like error in pm-suspend.log when resume failed:

System freeze after resume from suspend to RAM

since quite a while (probably ever) I am unable to suspend my computer to RAM because everytime it freezes a few seconds after resuming, never to become alive again until a reboot. After some investigation, I managed to get kernel logs by taking a picture of my screen. The logs were not written to disk, hence I didn't see anything before. This issue seems to be related to disk failures like bad sectors but I am quite sure, that my SSDs are in a good shape. I ran some SMART tests, they all turned out to be okay. Suspending from my dual-booted Windows works fine as well (although if the bad sector would be on the linux partition, it would probably not affect Windows).

I am not sure which one of the disks causes the freeze but I assume it's the revodrive because the logs talk about two drives. The Revodrive internally holds two drives, which are set up to operate in a RAID 0. Windows is installed on the Corsair drive, and has no access to the Revodrive. However, I used to run Windows on the Revodrive a few years ago, and it worked just fine.
Another interesting thing is that when I try to test suspend to RAM, the system does not freeze, nor produce errors. This only happens if none is written to /sys/power/pm_test (which means no automated wake-up, no testing).
Any ideas on how I could narrow down this issue? Thanks a lot!

And other than in this bug report I cannot kill X or anything because neither other TTYs work - I cannot input anything (although the hotkeys work weird enough) nor is SSHD running because the system is completely frozen...
Very funny thing is that for the last 2 days my system didnt freeze once (suspended about 6-7 times during one boot), even though for the 2 weeks prior to that, it froze EVERY SINGLE TIME I resumed from suspend, it didnt work once... -

In fact, when i was researching of this problem i wanted to check if my graphic card and memory are failing so a did few changes (removed memory stick and so one) but in doing this i removed almost all of my hard disk drives because i didn't want to hurt them with many reboots or resets.
What did i find? It is strange, kernel version is not important because i checked most of them.
I removed 2x2TB Seagate F14 series along with 4x3TB WD Green. Then i checked s2ram, it went to suspend, and resumes correctly. Everything works. I put it to sleep with s2ram -f -a 1. Works
I attached my 4x3TB WD Green drives. I put computer to sleep with s2ram...it causes hard lock, black screen, i could do only poweroff by powerbutton. s2ram -f -a 1 causes freez. Sometimes, but not constantly, s2ram -f -a 3 -p is being able to suspend...(mostly it does a freez, hard lock computer) but sometimes it is able to put it to a sleep, but resume just freezes everyting - no blinking cursor, no blinking num lock led and so on.
I know that you would suggest me to check logs - this is the main problem. Logs for pm-suspend works when i suspend or resume without WD drives attached. When i have them connected, i'm not able to check pm-logs because computer hangs, freezes and logs are not being stored/writed to pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log.
Could somebody help? Point me to a solution? I can't check logs because there are not any when freezing occurs. I checked openSuse thread and many others and for other systems there were some kernel fixex, patches.
They wrote that WD blacks are at fault because they don't have APM. Well, in fact my WD Green have APM with very aggresive factory settings: they park heads over 8 seconds not being used. I disabled it in firmware but disabling it is not the point and not the problem. People have the same problem even with APM and parking heads on other WD drives, i found it that some have it with WD Red's drives and even with very old 320GB WD Blue series - what is more funny, i have 640GB AAKS blue from WD and with this drive i can suspend or resume - APM on this drive is also unavilable, like in Green series because i changed it with wdidle with prebootable cd. I can't supend or resume with 3TB WD Greens.
BTW - suspend to disk, with pm-utils and uswsusp works ok, in 100% every time. (i had to add "shutdown method = shutdown" to /etc/suspend.conf from uswsusp package).
On Windows machine it works. Can suspend, can resume, can hibernate.

I was trying to find why suspend to ram won't work at all...and while i was searching i found one topic that was leading to upower dbus. Similar problem with upower i found, by coincidence, on Manjaro forum.

I tried this:
sudo systemctl enable acpid.service
sudo systemctl --system daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart systemd-logind
As soon as i enabled and started acpid.service...my supend to ram, from kde, works like a charm, without graphic problem, or freezing.
There is few question: why on my desktop suspend doesen't work out of the box, when even archwiki says it should? Why on my netbook machine (Acer AOD270) that has the same package installed it works out of the box? Why on my desktop machine acpid.service was not enabled, was not started and was not running while on the notebook it does?
Anyway...i fixed it by a big coincidence because on Fedora forum somebody has problem with suspend to ram with nvidia GTX750 and this card was new like my card (GTX660). He posted the same problem with upower that i posted in quotes and because of this i found another thing on Manjaro forum and that was it!
BTW - this problem, i now think, is not related to my WD drives because it works with them. I think that there was another one ugly thing that broke my suspend to ram ability - bios of my motherboard (so called uefi bios with support for old one) has no option for S1-S5 stated (like the previous motherboards had) and only have ASPM...and ASPM is in my opinion broken but i will try to veryfi it one again later.

High temperature after suspend to RAM with linux-3.9.2-1.
After the update to linux-3.9.2-1 my laptop works on higher temperature after resuming from suspend to RAM. Works fine with linux 3.8.7-1.
Normal working temperature is 47~49 degrees Celsius and after resuming it is 59~61. It's not just a false temperature reading. I can actually feel the laptop warmer, and the CPU fun spins up.
I can't see any CPU high load. I tend to believe that the temperature rise has to do with the Intel GPU driver (i915). My CPU has an integrated GPU.

Ways to debug it? Apart from kernel GIT bisect.I got the impression myself, that all the i915 downclock tweaks have been getting counterproductive over time as the driver got better.
Be sure to give the new pstate another go. I had problems too with the upgrade to 3.9.x and the powersave governor. Enabling "performance" in cpupower only and letting intel_pstate manage the idling on its own had an awesome effect. I only have rc6=1 and "sna" accel along with it on a similar cpu. Resuming with fan off.
