Swaps no increased in ST02

Hi Friends,
In our development system Swaps no is very high and it shows RED mark in st02
Table definition =25.213
Field definition = 357.579
Initial records = 62.209
program          =  81.856
CUA              = 12.158
Screen          = 879
please check below attached screen shot for more details
Could you please any one help me how to resolve this issue..
Thanks in Advance
Regards,
Venkat

Hi Lisa,
SWAPs themselves are not an indicator of a performance issue. It's unlikely you can avoid them from happening in production systems. What matters is a quality of buffer tuning and a number of swaps hapenning every day. Let's say you are getting more then 10000 swaps each day for the program buffer. Then you'd need to pay attenation to this buffer and try to find out a way to reduce swaps.

    Hi Every one,
    Thanks for all your inputs.
As Suggested we have restarted the production server however identified many swap entries red as fllows( Field  Description- 30,970, intial Records- 26,169, Program Buffer - 71,628, CUA- 30,442, Screen - 826 ) and Tables Generic Key - 389 & Export / Import - 247,144 )
I see that Buffer Hit ration of EXport / Import is 83.93 except this all other buffers are above 99 % .
Below are my system configuration details:

  • Swapping increase

    Hi All,
my DEV system is running very slow and Swap size increased.
while i run the following command for reset the buffer.
/$SYNC This resets all buffers of the application server
/$CUA This resets the CUA buffer of the application server
/$TAB This resets the TABLE buffers of the application server
/$NAM This resets the nametab buffer of the application server
i did restart the system after run above command then ST02 went to normal swap while swap is
increasing once again. I am send you ST02 status and Parameters and please have a look and
    guide me.
while here window server 2003 with ECC 6.0 SR3 and oracle 10.2.
    I am waiting your respons.

  • Oracle Coherence increasing Swap Utilization

We are using Oracle Coherence on linux servers. However, we noticed that because of Coherence processes running, often our swap utilization % increases too much, sometimes becoming more than 98%, even touched 100% a few times.
Once we kill all the coherence related processes, then it becomes normal.
Is there any way we can make coherence processes to only use a particular size of Swap space ?
Currently increasing swap space is not in our scope.
    Please suggest.

    Hi,
We are using Oracle Coherence on linux servers. However, we noticed that because of Coherence processes running, often our swap utilization % increases too much, sometimes becoming more than 98%, even touched 100% a few times.
Swapping itself (1%-100%) is not a good sign and should be avoided by ensure that you have sufficient memory such that you are not making active use of swap space on your machines. The active usage of SWAP space will have significant performance degradation.
Is there any way we can make coherence processes to only use a particular size of Swap space ?Manage your memory by allocating heap using -Xmx for Coherence JVMs. You need to ensure that the sufficient RAM memory is available on the server for Coherence JVMs and other operating system processes and do not consume all the RAM.
To temporarily set the swappiness, as the root user echo a value onto /proc/sys/vm/swappiness. The following command will set swappniess to 0:
echo 0 >/proc/sys/vm/swappiness //To set the value permanently, modify the /etc/sysctl.conf file.
    Hope this helps!

  • ST02 - Swaps history view

I have 2 queries re the ST02 screens...
    1. In the performance advisor notes, it mentions checking "swaps per day" via ST02 in, for example, the program buffer. However, the listed figures for each day are incremented totals.  Why is this not just the daily swaps figure? Is it just a historical view that no one has bothered to change??
    2. What is the value of the average swaps at the bottom of this list when it is the value of the incremented totals. I cannot understand a need for this particular value and would like to understand exactly what it is telling me. Surely, the average daily value is something that could be very helpful as a first glance.

    Dear [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/681368?#threadId681372 Morbus],
By "more than a few seconds" I mean even when I do nothing. I'm aware of the behavior you describe and in previous versions there was a work-around for it. You could select the next history entry before the view changes.

  • ST02 Export / Import buffer and directory entries

What would cause the number of (Export / Import) directory entries to steadily increase in ST02 until there were none left. I currently have the directory size set to 30,000 and over the course of about 7 days they are all used up and then I have extensive swaps. The swaps are at 1,060,431 after about one month.

lots of data input through interfaces for example...if the values are too small you have to increase them and checek again until the value is sufficient...

  • [Solved] Swap Question

I'm not really a n00bie, but no expert, either, and these are probably 'n00bie' Q's.
Hardware: Asus A8V-MX mobo, Athlon64 XP 3500+, .5GB DDR 333, 250 GB WD Cavier (IDE), homebuilt.
I realise I really need  1GB (at least) of real memory for the environment I run, but money is tight, and my mobo only has 2 DDR slots, so I'd have to buy a full 1 (or 2) GB and put my current memory in the closet.
Arch (Don't Panic) is fully current (x86_64).
I have 2 (relevant) partitions: /boot (40MB), and LVM  (16GB). both at the front of the drive.
    LVM: / (3.5GB, 78% in use); /home (.75GB; 36%), and swap.
This build is about 2 months old. I boot to run level 3, and manually initiate X/KDE as needed, but I'm normally on the net; typically I'll have Thunderbird, a console session, and Firefox running most of the time. I'm bad about having a dozen (or more) Firefox tabs open (10 at the moment).
I frequent DailyKos.com. DKos runs AJAX-enhanced Scoop, which either trashes Konqueror, or Konqueror trashes it - it doesn't crash, but rendering in that environment simply does not work - open a page at that site with 200+ comments attached. If Konqueror rendered large DKos pages properly, I'd be using it.
DKos tends to have LARGE pages. I also have a large Yahoo 'home page' with 54 categories; I try not to leave Yahoo windows open, although the home page itself is almost always open. The nature of DailyKos is such that a lot of consecutive pages will be open, and left open, often for hours, constantly being updated by AJAX.
I initially allocated .5GB to swap. System ran OK, but bogged down especially bad when I opened a lot of browser tabs. In that environment (according to free, watching the 'buffers/cache used' item, and the 'swap used' item), both real memory and swap would 'typically' be roughly 50% in use,
I decided a few days ago to increase swap by 50% (to .75GB) to see the results. The system is running considerably smoother; it still gets bogged sometimes, but I realise with the hardware I'm running I can't expect miracles. Even with 3 or 4 DKos windows open, it's still quite quick.
Increasing swap had what hit me as an odd effect. Again, I have 10 windows open (no DKos ATM, but the effect is normally the same with them, also). free shows about 60% of real memory in use, but only 5MB of swap is in use. Given equivalent environments, I would have expected swap usage to go UP if there was more available. It appears that real memory has gone up, slightly (~50% to ~60%), while swap usage has gone WAY done (~50% to < 5%; < 1% this moment).
I'm an OLD ex-COBOL    programmer; I've done a few moderate-size (but not commercial, production-scale) projects in VB (pre-Linux) and understand the basics of OOPS, but I'm not a C/C++ programmer at all, and reading the source isn't terribly helpful. Why did swap usage decline so drastically? I'm certainly not complaining      - I'm simply confused,
Does the kernel decide on a memory management scheme at boot, based on available real memory and swapspace? Why did increasing swap DECREASE swap usage, INCREASE (more subtly) real memory usage, resulting in better performance? Given the environment I'm running, is .75GB a rational/adequate swapspace size? Any suggestions on an optimal swap size? I realise I can experiment myself; I already have a bit, obviously, and and willing to do more experimenting (and will), but some direction as to what's happening behind the scenes would be helpful.
Lastly, is 'free' (properly read) the most appropriate tool for monitoring this, or should I be looking at iostat, vmstat, something in /proc?
    TIA!
    Keith

I don't know the answer to all of your questions but I beleive this is how swap works, In order for the kernel to free up space on your Memory(ram), the kernel transfers data that is not currently being used to the Swap partition and when the data is needed again the kernel copies it back to your actual Memory. So Swap is only used when an application is in idle and no longer needs it's data to be directly in memory, then when that application is in use again the data is copied back to the Memory. The reason I beleive your swap usage is going down is because you're increasing the size, therefor the ratio's are not what they once were, you're still probably using the same amount of swap but since the size of the swap has been increased it doesn't seem like it. In a general rule a swap partition or swap file should be twice the size of the amount of actual memory you have, increasing your swap more than that really isn't going to make a change to how fast your system is since swap is only used when an application no longer needs it's data to be in ram because it's idle, so it's copied to swap until it's needed again. Hopefully this answers some of your questions, and for your last question I beleive it's a matter of opinion, each of those tools work equally well, I use 'top' myself.

  • Swap utilization %

    Hi,
I am running 2 database instances of Oracle 11g on Solaris 10 (SPARC T-5120).
At the OS level it seems that the swap is not being used at all, but at the OEM, it shows the "Swap Utlization %" is about 80%
    bash-3.00$ swap -l
    swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
    /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s3 32,3 16 36877808 36877808
Could someone please help me to understand these two indicator and to which one I need to pay attention.
Also, I noticed that if I increase the "memory_max_target" parameter, the "Swap Utilization%" increases.

  • Program Buffer swap

    Hi Techies
In our Production servers i found that Program buffer swap are more around 10 thousand swaps
I have restarted the server twice but still after two days again the swap are increased ( only the program buffer swaps are more) and moreover hitratio is 99% and no performance issue .
    abap/buffersize                  512000
what shall i do shall increase the program buffer size to reduce the swaps

Hi, i have a SAP ECC 5 installed on a server iseries with db2 as dbms, in
st02 there are some swaps so i would like to optimize the parameters
regarding the memory management. Is there which can give me the right suggestion?
    Bye

    Hi Luca,
if you do see some swaps, please increase these values - this is application dependent (and has nothing to do with DB2).
As you are on 64 bit, you can increase without any problem ...

  • Oracle 11g  Quartz Scheduler 1.8.5 running under JBOSS 5.1

Basically I'm getting this error when running Quartz configured for the jobStore
    org.quartz.jobStore.class = org.quartz.impl.jdbcjobstore.JobStoreCMT
I've got two data sources setup.
One data source is setup to be looked up via JNDI (presumably for the one that may participate in distributed JTA XA transactions) and one that
supposedly is not to participate in JTA transactions in which quartz can call commit/rollback on it's own.
The problem I'm seeing with the interaction of the two is the following exception:

I've googled and seen reference to Oracle spatial using temp tables and not compatible with transactions... but not sure
exactly how to solve this problem.

  • Performance and Usability Problems-Aperture 3.1.3 and 10.7.1

    Late 2009 iMac
    Quad Core i7
    8 GB RAM
    512 ATI GPU
Nik Software Complete Collection Plugins—all updated
I’m guessing this is due to memory leaks, but Aperture is crippled with 10.7.1. On my great iMac, Aperture now runs like it did when I ran Aperture 2 on a 2004 PowerBook G4.
With Snow Leopard, I had none of these issues.
With Aperture idle, it uses up to 2 GB real memory and 3 GB virtual memory. With it idle, it generates MBs of page outs and swap used. If I start to use it for adjustments, even minor ones, page outs and swap used increase dramatically. For example, last night after editing and adjusting a project of images, page outs were just under 5 GB. I’ve reverted to the old habit of rebooting to clear page outs and swaps. Last time I had to do this was with the 2004 PowerBook.
While actually using Aperture for edits and adjustments, response to almost any input is slow, with conspicuous delays. Even checking and unchecking an adjustment brick causes a considerable delay between the click and when the change is visible.
Again, with Snow Leopard, Aperture was a bullet with current configuration. I just ordered 8 more GBs of RAM in hopes that this will help until Apple fixes Aperture.
Anyone else having such considerable performance issues with Aperture 3.1.3 and 10.7.1?
    Thanks

jcrosby wrote:The "individual setup" argument is an oversimplification. With relatively current hardware, I can reproduce very poor performance when running Aperture in Lion in either 32-bit or 63-bit mode (though the patterns change a bit), and so can many others.
    John-
Actually I do think it is about individual setups. The kinds of complaints expressed in this thread have been going on literally for decades.
Starting with early-days Photoshop then later Aperture I have observed the challenges of heavy graphics apps with hardware/RAM/OSs/app versions. We have always been able to reproduce poor performance, because apps/OSs generally do evolve to be more demanding.
IMO our goal is to help individual setups tweak to achieve non-poor performance while we wait for stronger hardware, or an OS improvement, or an app improvement, or money to buy more RAM, or whatever. IMO it really is an ongoing individual-setup (e.g. last year I was running a 2006 C2D MBP with a max of 3 GB RAM requiring constant tweaking) issue.
Today I run Aperture under 10.6.8 on a 2011 MBP with SSD and 8 GB RAM and it rocks. I would consider 10.6.8 to be one of the tweaks that folks might do if all the other tweaks (like add RAM and run 32-bit) fail to achieve non-poor performance.

  • Physical memory and paging

I know in SAP's world, memory means physical memory + paging. I want to know which program has contribution for swap.
    Suppose there is 4G physical memory on an application server, em/initial_size_MB = 4G, abap/heap_area_nondia = 4G.
    1) If there is no dialog processor running and one background job running which claims 2G memory, I want to know will swap occur?
    2) If there is one dialog processor running which claims 2G memory and one background job running which claims 2G memory, will swap occur?

By ST03N you can check the workload, by OS06 the swap .
By transaction ST02 you can check the folllowing parameters:
    SAP Roll area parameters
    - ztta/roll_first          : First amount of roll area used in a dialog WP
    - ztta/roll_area             : size of the local SAP Roll area in the work process
rdisp/ROLL_SHM      : size of SAP roll Buffer
rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS     : size of entire shared SAP roll area
SAP Extended Memory main parameters :
em/initial_size_MB : size of SAP extended memory allocated when                         the SAP instance starts up
em/blocksize_KB  : size block which split SAP Extended Memory
ztta/roll_extension : maximum size of a user context in the SAP Extended memory
SAP Heap Memory main parameters :
abap/heap_area_dia       : quotas oh SAP heap memory that a dialog                                 process can allocated.
abap/heap_area_nondia : quotas oh SAP heap memory that a nondialog                    process can allocated.
abap/heap_area_total     : size that can be allocated in total by all work                    process.
abap/heaplimit           : Workprocess restart limit of heap memory
if helpful reward point is appreciated

  • Bridge CS6 crashing after a "Select All" command.

    Hello all-
I'm running Lion 10.7.4 on a 2008 MacBook Pro Unibody w/ a 2.4GHz processor and 8GB of ram. I have an SSD as my boot drive, it also houses all of my applications. All of my data / app data is stored on another 2.5 HDD that's in my optical bay (I installed a "data doubler").
I wasn't running any Adobe products on my old setup, so I recently purchased Adobe CS6. I haven't run into any issues with any other program besides Bridge. The application opens and functions fine, it's only after I Command+A a selection of files... that I get a "The Operation Could Not Be Completed" error message. When I Command + A or drag my cursor over all of the files to select them, the program comes to a standstill and beachballs before giving me the message. After closing the error message dialogue box I can continue working, but sometimes Bridge can become completely unresponsive as far as opening folders or displaying thumbnails. Then I have to force quit the application because normal quit commands don't work.
I've noticed that this is ONLY happening with .MOV files that I shot on my DSLR that are stored on an external HD. I've been able to Select All on other files on and off the external HD just fine. It's really a strange little problem! It has to have something to do with the DSLR files. I've also realized that I could select a portion of the problematic files without getting an error message, a total of 8 to be specific.
I'm sorry if this has been answered somewhere, but a quick search through the forums proved fruitless. I'd appreciate any kind of feedback.

In Windows machine it could be the page file size, not sure what that would be in a Mac.
That probably would be page in and out and Used Swap. You will find that info when opening Activity Monitor from the utilities folder.
usually the used Swap will increase after quitting PS and also Bridge can consume a lot.
Be sure to first let the cache finish properly on the external disk, if possible use export cache to folder option in the preferences, might help also.
And ditto for me,  no experience with system divided in two disks but it seems possible. Don't know what you mean with data doubler, if you have preferences, caches and library on two disk this might conflict or at least it can be tricky.
