Swf vs. PNG files size CPU crashing.
So I have an app that embeds swf's for icons in each sprite, where each swf is between 2kb and 8kb in size (SEE ATTACHED IMAGE). I am using swf's, as opposed to pngs, as the app scales and I want the icons to remain perfect at any zoom level. Their can be up to 1500 sprites in app at one time, possibly looking at 4000 in the future.
I am embedding the swfs like so: Embed('assets/images/wap.swf');
The problem is at about 600 sprites the app freezes up the CPU. I have tried setting cacheAsBitmap to both true and false and neither helps or hurts much. If I take out the swf icons and just use a circle in the graphics layer of each sprite the app runs perfectly no matter how many sprites I add.
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
I thought about adding and removing the icons from the sprites if the sprites were off the screen and add them back if/when they viewable on the stage. But I am not sure one how to achieve this making each sprite aware if its on or off the screen and two would adding and removing the nodes be fast enough so the eye cant see it and would adding and removing the nodes so quickly be just as much CPU drain as leaving them visible all the time?
TIA, J
Hi,
It is hard to determine without seeing how you embed the swfs what is happening(are they embedded as classes or embedded as images), Try this load a swf into an image and then check the bitmapdata size this I think is your problem, displayable size is much bigger than vector size but it sounds like you aren't using vector graphics and if this is the case then scaling the size of the sprite is still going to pixelate your display image.
David.

Pshop CC -- saving JPG & PNG file size bloat
Saving JPGs & PNGs from Photoshop CC is creating what I can only describe as a obscene file bloat. Just recently, what should have been a 7k jpg saved as a 1.1 mb jpg file. PNGs which should average roughly 100-150k are coming out at 1.3mb. If I use the "Save for Web", sometimes it gives me the proper sized images.
I have noticed this on 2 computers --- one a mac & one windows with completely different file sets. So it is not an issue of my OS, the original files or anything specific to one particular common item.
FYI -- Doing the same thing with pshop cs6, I get the proper file sizes.
I have included a sample image here. This image is a straight out "save" from pshop CC -- it is 1.1mb. However, when I saved the same image as a JPG in pshop cs6, it was 7k.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?Haven't had a PNG or JPG go wacky here in that way so far...
I think the issue is revealed by looking in File - File Info in the Raw Data section. I don't know why, but there are a huge number of <rdf:li> XML elements showing up there with hex values in them. I don't know what that means, exactly, but I believe the accumulation of that metadata explains the size increase.
Do any of the terms you see in the raw metadata mean anything to you? Do you have 3rd party plug-ins that could be responsible for this?

Hello,
I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file. Both
files are the same size. So, it seems that it doesn't matter,
whether you import an flv file or an swf file, to keep your file
size small. Is this correct ?
Thanks,
Paul> I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file.
Both files are
> the
> same size.
That's just a coincidence.
There is different baggage / overheads with FLV vs SWF. So
you will usually
get some differences .. sometimes SWF smaller, other times
FLV. However,
the actual video payload is the same in both, and the audio
is similar too,
and they are the bulk of the file size. So there shouldn't be
a huge
difference in file size between SWF an FLV.

Premiere Pro CS4: Exporting to High Quality SWF with Low File Size
Adobe Program: Premeire Pro CS4 (to build slide show video)
Adobe Program: Adobe Media Encoder (to export project into flash file)
Project Details: A 20 minute slide show with still images and audio.
Project Source: HDV 720p, 29.97 fps
Objective: Export slide show into a flash file so it can be watched online. The file must be small enough for most people to be able to stream the video but good quality (like videos found at Hulu.com).
Problem: I'm struggling to find an export setting that will let me maintain both good quality and a small file size.
The export setting that allows the best quality is:
Format: FLV / F4V
Preset: F4V - HD 720p
File Size: 800MB
Troubleshooting History: I have tried the following Presets:
F4V - Same as Source
F4V - 1080p Source, Half Size
F4V - 720p Source, Half Size
F4V - 720p Source, Half Size, VBR 2pass
F4V - Web Large, Widescreen Source
While the file size is much reduced with these Presets, I lose too much video quality.
Inquiry: Does anyone have advice for meeting my listed objective?I understand that if you want a smaller file you must sacrifice quality and if you want better quality you must expect a larger file size. I am looking for a solution in between the two extremes (again, I draw on the example of Hulu.com). Mainly, I am looking to reduce the file mentioned above from 800MB to about half that.
Does anyone know a way to manipulate the export settings to make that possible and still maintain as high a picture quality as possible? -
What is the expected SWF to AVI file size ratio?
I have a 3.5 minute movie that is mainly stills and voice over. The published swf is 3.4 Mb.
When I publish it to AVI, it comes out at:
260 Mb using Cinepak codec
2,500 Mb using MJPEG compressor
3,000 Mb using Microsoft Video 1
Is this expected behavior?
Is there anyway to reduce these?
ThanksFrom reading http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/03/tips_for_publish_to_avi_in_ado.html I discovered that the XviD Codec is one of the better ones. This results in a filesize of 60Mb (using the same Captivate project).
Hope this is of use to some people! -
Placing a PNG file with transparency
If I have a psd / Png file on Photoshop that has text with no background (transparent), and I do a Place of that file into Illustrator, I get a white background in additiotion to the Text.
How do I stop the white background from placing withing the Illustrator? I have Illustrator CS3 and Photoshop CS3
Thanks in advance.
BobHalf a decade later, I am getting the same problem as the original poster (although I am using Illustrator CC 64bit on Windows 8).
I am trying to 'place' a PNG graphic in Illustrator, The PNG has a transparent background, which is being honoured fine in other programs (e.g. web browsers - even in its icon in Windows Explorer).
However when I place it in Illustrator, the transparency doesn't work: instead the background is displayed as an opaque colour. It stays that way if I output to a PDF from Illustrator.
The PNG in question is a 'paletted' type (I think it has a palette of 256 colours) - one of which is set to be transparent.
Does Adobe Illustrator not support transparency in paletted PNG files?
(I'm aware that you can generate a 24-bit PNG with the transparency done as an 'alpha channel'), but this is wasteful for many simple types of graphic, creating a much bigger PNG file size. -
Website File Size, re: Photo Albums
Been wrestling with my first iWeb site for a while now. Searched tons of boards and posts, looking for help on the site size but have not found any solutions. My site has several small photo albums that are eating up most of the site size. I realize part of this is because iWeb generates different thumbnails, etc. for photo album images. I have reduced the size of the images, removed photo frames, etc. but cannot seem to find anything else to help reduce the size of these pages and site.
Thanks in advance for any tips.GAdkb wrote:
I have reduced the size of the images...
But have you reduced the file size of the images? For a comparison of JPG & PNG file sizes, click here:
For very large, high-quality RAW and JPG images, you can choose iWeb > Preferences and select “Optimize images on import.” This setting reduces the size of imported images by up to 60 percent so they don’t take up as much space in your Domain file.
As an alternative to letting iWeb determine your image file sizes, before importing a JPG image to iWeb you can change its size by double-clicking the image which will open it in Preview. Then choose File > Save As... and adjust the Quality slider.
Or click below to see the Downsize utility. It's integrated with iPhoto, so you can process an entire iPhoto album in one click:
Or there's HTML-Optimizer Pro and Web Site Maestro here: -
Photoshop CC 2014 Crashes When Opening or Saving PNG Files
I'm having an issue where opening or saving PNG files causes my copy of Photoshop CC 2014 to crash.
I've updated to the latest version, restarted my computer and have no plugins installed. I have also re-installed the program from the Creative Cloud application, although I haven't tried a full uninstall/reinstall sequence.
I'm running an x64 version of Windows and have tried both the 64 and 32 bit versions of Photoshop - neither works.
Other file formats don't appear to cause any issue - the problem is specific to PNG files (does Adobe Photoshop depend on any PNG library like LibPNG? Perhaps an older version has been installed by a different application?)
This issue seems to have occured in the past on the Adobe forums, but there is no clear resolution.Part of the information is missing but your running CC 14.1.2 not CC 2014, and14.1.2 needs to be updated to 14.2.1. I also can not see the date of you video drivers. Here is what my CC 2014 and my 14.2.1 looks like

File size of .swf files exported from Indesign CS5
I have made a basic file (728 x 90 px) in Indesign, which is the size of banner ads we produce. I have not put on any effect or animation yet. When I export it as a swf file, the file size is 139kb. This is way too large for any banner advertising on websites where the highest is normally 100px and the smallest is 30kb.
I have tried exporting at a lower resolution, but it has no effect on the file size, rendering this useless as a flash export option for me.
Is there something I'm missing or is Indesign just not the right tool for flash banner ads.
ThanksMr Met
{swf file that's 13MB. What are your images, 200MB each?}
As I said, I resampled the images to be 500px wide so each PShop image is about 1.4mb (single layer). There are 12 images used.
Here it is if you care to see i t- 11mb so it will take time to load

{The Right Tool for the Right Job ...}
No doubt you are a 100% right here.
But I think it is a bit disingenious to blame the InDesign user for the feature. It would be like Abobe putting Drop Shadows and transparences into ID and then saying you should use PhotoShop to for that feature!

Save For Web vs. Resizing vs. File Size vs. PNG
In playing around with some settings while saving a .png file, I noticed some weird results. For this example, the original image is 300 x 300, but I want the final size to be 200 x 200. I get different results depending on the order I perform the following operations (I never thought the order mattered until now).
1. start with 300 x 300 image, choose save for web, select png-24, with transparency, white matte, convert to sRGB, change image size to 200 x 200, then save - the file size is 37kb
2. start with 300 x 300 image, use Photoshop's "image size" to change to 200 x 200, then save for web, etc - the file size is 111kb
So depending on which step I resize the image, the file size is significantly different - if I resize BEFORE using save for web, the file size is much larger. This is just weird to me, but I always resize AFTER choosing save for web, so that's why I've never caught this until now. In case you ask, while using Photoshop's "image size", all three options are checked at the bottom of that window, so nothing is getting re-sampled or anything like that.
The only thing I can think of is each of those methods treat pixel data differently when reducing the dimensions. When I overlay both exported .png files on top of each other, I see no difference in pixel quality and/or color shift - so why the big difference in file size? Unsurprisingly, if I just save the file straight to .png, the sharpness is much better, and the file size is 46kb. I did notice when saving for web, the colors become a little more saturated.
Are all these results typical? I've never really paid much attention to the results when exporting .png's. I always thought the results were lossless (in general).Too many variables
What? There are 2 variables here (variables = scenarios = steps). Only two different operations.
1. resize the image, THEN use "save for web" = 91kb
2."save for web", THEN change image size = 157kb
Hopefully my logic translates here:
All other settings are the same. I even made sure the .psd was sRGB this time. The specific question was "why does the different workflow order produce such a big difference in file size"?
In creating a new test file (http://www.shan-dysigns.com/userForums/photoshop/savePNG.zip), I did notice an interesting thing: (I'm including my files in case you want to follow along or test for yourself)
If I merge all layers BEFORE performing the steps above, the file sizes were relatively closer to one another - 168kb and 157kb (respectively from the 1, 2 list above)
One thing to note is all the .psd layers are either shapes or text - this whole scenario may be totally different if each layer had rasterized content (actually, it does, by about -20kb).
The file size in step 1 above didn't jump until it had to consider rastered text/shapes into the calculation. So all this tells me the difference in file size has to do with how each process handles vector data. Maybe when you allow PS to resize the image first, the overall file size is smaller because the vector data gets recalculated???
I don't know how to properly interpret all these differences, but I do know there is something about PS's operation of resizing the canvas with vector data versus resizing the canvas with rasterized data - this has to be where the difference in file size lies.
Maybe I've just wasted a bunch of time on the obvious, but I think I learned something here. Now my head hurts and my eyes have popped out of my head.
So, Chris, I guess there ARE more variables in this situation. My curse is being nosey and wanting to know more technically about PS than most casual designers probably would care about. -
Saving png with Cut Countour in illustrator as .eps = Gigantic file size
Hi
When saving a png (size= 32mb) in illustrator, with a layer on top with a vector-path (Cut contour for a roland cutter) the .eps file ends up being 800 mb??
I tried saving only the layer with med vector path as an eps. The vector .eps ends up being 5,5 mb.
When adding the .png (32mb) on a seperate layer, and then saving as an eps. This eps (png+vector) ends up 800mb.
It is a big print ( 125cmx218cm)
Anyway to make this file-size a bit smaller?
/RikkeYou'll need to outline the text and provide the mask image.
Apart from that: looks to me like a problem with resolution. There's a structure in your exported file, but it's smoothed.
Without knowing what exactly you did step by step it's difficult to solve this problem. -
One of our G5 iMacs has a problem with running Reduce FIle Size in Acrobat Pro 7.0.9 and crashes every time. We've tried different compatibility, but each time it starts working on the images within the pdf, boom!
I've tried re-installing Acrobat with the same results. The full CS2 suite is installed, are there any user level prefs I can trash? Any help would be appreciated... thanks!The G4 Macs at my school had the same problem, until they upgraded to CS3. I think it was probably a bug in Acrobat 7... have you installed all the latest updates? Check the updates section in Adobe downloads, all the updates for CS2 are still available. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would suggest upgrading to Acrobat 8, or CS3 if possible.

PS CS4 crashes when trying to open PNG files
I am using a freshly installed CS4 on a freshly installed Mac OS 10.6.3. No extra filters, nothing.
Now: whenever I export a PNG file from Illustrator via "Save for Web" and then try to open it in PS, the app crashes (endless beachball delight).
The same happened with a GIF file from AI. Only JPEG files work. Is this a recurrent problem and, if yes, why?
When I do the same at home with CS3, everything is fine.Meanwhile, I get a spinning beachball in any CS4 app whenever trying
to open or save files, so I suspect a network issue (I'm on a large network).
To your question: I'm trying to open a file in PS which I created in AI. This is quite common practice. Open, paste, place or whatever. It's all the same result.
I already did the basic system maintenance. I don't think trashing prefs will be of any use as the same problem now also occurs in Fireworks and AI.
Update: I localized the problem to either the network or the external Firewire drive I use for Time Machine. It's from the infamous LaCie brand and has already caused trouble with the finder.
2nd update: When the network and the drive are disconnected, all open and save problems go away *but* the one with opening PNGs in PS when they were created in AI. -
Hi All,
Is there some way to avoid adding the uncompressed file
length to the SWF header? (the 4 byte integer after the 3 byte
signature and the 1 byte version number)
Can I write some default value instead of the exact one?
Any help would be highly appereciated,
YeeeevThe file size field value is 5f030000, but the byte order is little endian and needs to be inverted. The inverted bytes are 00 00 03 5f (0x35f) (863).
Here's a utility function to invert an unsigned int:
function invertUint(value:uint):uint
var result:uint=0;
try{
var ba:ByteArray=new ByteArray();
ba.writeUnsignedInt(value);
ba.position=0;
ba.endian = Endian.LITTLE_ENDIAN;
result = ba.readUnsignedInt();
catch(err){}
return result; -
Saving same png file gives me image with 10x smaller size
Hi.
I would appriciate if someone explained me what I'm doing wrong.
I have a png image, of 256x128 size. It has 8bits per pixel for color. Now this image's size is 97kB. I open it in photoshop, I save it as different png file, and then... this image is 7kB of size.
Can someone tell me what's wrong, or what I'm doing wrong?
LucasOk guys, thanks a lot for patience. Below is the main cause why I started this topic, but I still can't figure it out. I thought the loss of size is the cause, but you say it's not :/
I'm not that skilled as you guys, so that's the primary reason why I'm here. I will be really gratefull if someone could give me a hint here, or some small help.
To cut to the chase, I'm trying to use a program that creates graphics for older games. This program edits particular files, that have different resolutions and different number of bits per pixel. The problem I have however is the transparency and color palette, as I never had dealings with that. The problem is, that someone created before a pictures that are very smooth, and this seems to be the cause of very smart using of transparency levels, for different colors in the palete. However, I have no idea how to achieve the same effect, I tried many things, but still can't figure this out. I will try to ilustrate the problem below.
Below is a screenshot from this application

On the right is the picture that is the root of my question here. It has to be in the format with palette of collors in amount of 16, although I have no idea where it stores the alpha channel information, as there are 4 bits for color per pixel. Well anyways, you can see on the right top corner the palette. It basicaly has only the shades of gray in this case. I can switch now to the alpha channel mask, and this is what I get:
[img]http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4089/69176653.png/img]
You can see that each of the colors in the palette has different alpha values. Now what I tried is, I exported the image, I opened it with photoshop, saved it, imported it in the program, and guess what I found in the alpha channel mask:

All the information of the alpha channel for each color is gone!
Here are the examples with more colors(256):

The alpha channel mask

And now, I do the same as before, export it, save it in photoshop, and guess what, all the info is gone again:

Now loosing this information is not a problem, as I will be inputting different pictures, but my question is, how I can achieve the same effect in photoshop for my images that I will try to import. I would love to have as smooth edges as they are seen on those examples above.
