Swing is great !!!!!

Hi guys I've been working in swing for a last 5 years developing a client server and a GUI library. I've been working in coding our java beans (MyJTable, MyPopupDataTextField etc,etc) and our data JDBC beans.
The only thing I could say now is that the library is becoming very productive and that I'm enjoying swing programming !!! I'm sure that all work I have done in swing it would be more difficult implementing in dot net. I really learned a lot watching sun's swing code !!! Really the best GUI toolkit !!! Thanks to all swing team, and people who are in java forums for helping me during these years !!!!
(The only painfull thing was switching from jdk1.3.1 to jdk1.4.2, lot of focus issues).

I am not good at English, but I think swing is awful
bad...I think the Swing developers were given a pretty tough egg to crack and they produced something that is reasonably flexible and gets the job done. Overall I doubt I could have done as good a job given ten times the time to do it. That being said, there is definitely a lot in Swing to learn from through examples of what not to do. Some horrible abuses of concrete inheritance (DefaultTableCellRenderer for example) and other bad code so I wouldn't call it ideal or even the "best".

  • When/Why to use Canvas?

    Okay, so I'm looking into creating custom components and I know that Canvas class was made to give programmers a class to use solely for drawing. However, you could just use JComponent/Component to creat custom buttons, menu's, etc. So I'm a little confused why we have Canvas and what the best way is to go about making a custom component, graphically.

    Okay, here's another point to bring up since you said don't mix awt and swing. Things like graphics and graphics 2d are under awt but to my knowledge there is no equivalent in swing. This all may seem confusing at first, but the more you play with it, the more you read on it, the more it will make sense. Morgalr and Darryl are as usual right on the money. As they state, Swing is built on top of AWT, however they are very different in how they display components. While AWT uses the native OS to render its buttons, panels and other widgets, Swing renders these things internally, all except the root container such as the JFrame (I believe). This gives Swing much greater flexibility in how it displays these things and how you can change and control them. Because of these differences though, it is generally not safe to display Swing widgets together with AWT widgets. There are as always exceptions, but you have to have a darn good reason to claim an exception (you don't), and have to have the smarts to be able to mingle the AWT and Swing widgets together (I don't).
    Also, for some odd reason, JFrame is in swing package but it's hierarchy is under awt. In fact, that very fact about JFrame has give me problems when trying to do keybindings on a JFrame.Then don't do key bindings on the JFrame. Do it instead on one of the JComponents it holds. You do know that even the contentPane is at its heart a JComponent (though this needs to be casted if you want to use it directly).
    Good luck,
    Pete

  • JTable Focus and InputVerifier nightmares

    I have been wrestling with JTable in 1.3 and 1.4, specifically its focus management and InputVerifiers.
    I have searched all over to find out why there is abnormal behavior in the focus manager, while overriding, setting properties to terminate a cell being edited, etc.
    I found ways to get the cell editors to provide InputVerifier support, though there are still quirks in some instances where the InputVerifier is not consulted.
    So to the Swing team, great job so far really...but the JTable really needs a LOT of work and bug votes don't make up for a non-releasable product.
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy Hanna

    Thanks qussev,
    that looks promising but I cannot find more than a picture (no code) where the focus is outside the selection. Does anybody know how this can be done?

  • Drag N Drop in JTables

    Hi !
    I have two scenarios
    1) I need to be able to drag and drop rows from a given table to the other table.
    2) I should be able to drag and drop rows with in the same table( This case is same as rearranging the rows with in the table with the help of MouseDragged Event).
    Is this possible using Drag N Drop in swing? Greatly appreciate solutions and online resources which can help me write my custom TransferHandler for the above purposes

    Ok, here's the promised source code
    When the Class is initialized you need to create a couple of objects
              DragSource dragSource = DragSource.getDefaultDragSource() ;
              dragSource.createDefaultDragGestureRecognizer(this, DnDConstants.ACTION_COPY_OR_MOVE, this) ;And you will need the following method
         public void dragGestureRecognized(DragGestureEvent e) {
              String v = (String) getSelectedValue() ;
              e.startDrag(DragSource.DefaultCopyDrop, new StringSelection(v), this) ;
         }or a variation on it. You will of course need the imports and such to support these, but most of it is in the java.awt.dnd package.
    Then in your target you'll need a method to catch the drop ...
         public void drop(DropTargetDropEvent e){
              try{
                   DataFlavor stringFlavor = DataFlavor.stringFlavor ;
                   Transferable tr = e.getTransferable() ;
                   if(e.isDataFlavorSupported(stringFlavor)){
                        String name = (String) tr.getTransferData(stringFlavor) ;
                        e.acceptDrop(DnDConstants.ACTION_COPY_OR_MOVE) ;
                        Point p = e.getLocation() ;
                        int x = Integer.parseInt(String.valueOf(Math.round(p.getX()))) ;
                        int y = Integer.parseInt(String.valueOf(Math.round(p.getY()))) ;
                        int i = lastScenarioIndex++ ;
                        addDrawingObject(
                             new ScenarioDrawingObject("SCENARIO_" + i, "SCENARIO_" + i, y, x,
                             new SequenceMemberDrawingObject(name, name, 20, 20))) ;
                        resizeContainer() ;
              catch(IOException ioe){
                   ioe.printStackTrace() ;
              catch(UnsupportedFlavorException ufe){
                   ufe.printStackTrace() ;
         }There's a little more to it, but that's the crux of it.
    Cheers.

  • The great swing dilema

    Hello all,
    I have a question which I consider to be the key to swing development:
    WHAT is the difference between setSize, setPrefferedSize, setBounds,
    setMinimumSize, setMaximumSize.
    Which of these methods is deprecated and which is not?
    Which of them should be used and when?
    Are they depending on layout manager used?
    I used them all. Sometimes some of them work, sometimes not.
    I REALLY WANT to understand the base of swing.
    I hope this will be an interesting thread.

    Are they depending on layout manager used?Yes, so check out this section from the Swing tutorial on "Using Layout Managers" and start playing with the different Layout Manager to see what happens:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/layout/using.html
    A couple of observations I've made from my 'limited' experiences:
    1) setBounds is only used when you are not using a Layout Manager (called Absolute Positioning)
    2) I've only ever used setSize() when writing my own Layout Manager
    3) Most components set their own preferredSize() so you don't need to do anything. I sometimes override the preferredSize of components.
    4) I have never used max and min sizes.

  • PL/SQL and Java Swing interface

    Everybody in this forum knows that Oracle is the best database around
    with many functionalities, stability, performance, etc. We also know
    that PL/SQL is a great language to manipulate information directly
    in the database with many built in functions, OOP capability,
    transaction control, among other features. Today an application that
    manipulates information, which needs user interface, requires components
    to be developed using different technologies and normally running in
    different servers or machines. For example, the interface is done using
    a dynamic HTML generator like JSP, PHP, PL/SQL Web Toolkit, etc.
    This page is executed in an application server like Oracle iAS or
    Tomcat, just to name two, which in turn access a database like Oracle to
    build the HTML. Also rich clients like Java applets require an intermediate
    server to access the database (through servlets for example) although
    it is possible to access the database directly but with security issues.
    Another problem with this is that complexity increases a lot, many
    technologies, skills and places to maintain code which leads to a greater
    failure probability. Also, an application is constantly evolving, new
    calculations are added, new tables, changed columns. If you have an
    application with product code for example and you need to increase its
    size, you need to change it in the database, search for all occurrences
    of it in the middle-tier code and perhaps adjust interfaces. Normally
    there is no direct dependency among the tier components. On another
    issue, many application interfaces today are based on HTML which doesn't
    have interactive capabilities like rich-client interfaces. Although it
    is possible to simulate many GUI widgets with JavaScript and DHTML, it is
    far from the interactive level we can accomplish in rich clients like
    Java Swing, Flash MX, Win32, etc. HTML is also a "tag-based" language
    originally created to publish documents so even small pages require
    many bytes to be transmitted, far beyond of what we see on the screen.
    Even in fast networks you have a delay time to wait the page to be
    loaded. Another issue, the database is in general the central location
    for all kinds of data. Most applications relies on it for security,
    transaction and availability. My proposal is to use Oracle as the
    central location for interface, processing and data. With this approach
    we can create not only the data manipulation procedures in the database,
    but procedures that also control and manage user interfaces. Having
    a Oracle database as the central location for all components has many
    advantages:
    - Unique point of maintenance, backup and restore
    - Integrated database security
    - One language for everything, PL/SQL or Java (even both if desired)
    - Inherited database cache, transaction and processing optimizations
    - Direct access to the database dictionary
    - Application runs on Oracle which has support for many platforms.
    - Transparent use of parallel processing, clusters and future
    background technologies
    Regarding the interface, I already created a Java applet renderer
    which receives instructions from the database on how to create GUI
    objects and how to respond to events. The applet is only 8kb and can
    render any Swing or AWT object/event. The communication is done
    through HTTP or HTTPS using Oracles's MOD_PLSQL included in the Apache
    HTTP server which comes with the database or application server (iAS).
    I am also creating a database framework and APIs in PL/SQL to
    create and manipulate the client interface. The applet startup is
    very fast because it is very small, you don't need to download large
    classes with the client interface. Execution is done "on-demand"
    according to instructions received from the database. The instructions
    are very optimized in terms of network bandwidth and based on preliminary
    tests it can be up to 1/10 of a similar HTML screen. Less network usage
    means faster response and means that even low speed connections will
    have a good performance (a future development can be to use this in
    wireless devices like PDAs e even cell phones, just an idea for now).
    The applet can also be executed standalone by using Java Web Start.
    With this approach no business code, except the interface, is executed
    on the client. This means that alterations in the application are
    dynamically reflected in the client, no need to "re-download" the
    application. Events are transmitted when required only so network
    usage is minimized. It is also possible to establish triggering
    events to further reduce network usage. Since the protocol used is
    HTTP (which is stateless), the database framework I am creating will
    be responsible to maintain the state of connections, variables, locks
    and session information, so the developer don't need to worry about it.
    The framework will have many layers, from communication up to
    application so there will be pre-built functions to handle queries,
    pagination, lock, mail, log, etc. The final objective is to have a
    rich client application integrated into the database with minimum
    programming and maintenance requirements, not forgetting customization
    capabilities. Below is a very small example of what can de done. A
    desktop with two windows, each window with two fields, a button with an
    image to switch the values, and events to convert the typed text when
    leaving the field or double-clicking it. The "leave" event also has an
    optimization to only be triggered when the text changes. I am still
    developing the framework and adjusting the renderer but I think that all
    technical barriers were transposed by now. The framework is still in
    the early stages, my guess is that only 5% is done so far. As a future
    development even an IDE can be created so we have a graphical environment
    do develop applications. I am willing to share this with the PL/SQL
    community and listen to ideas and comments.
    Example:
    create or replace procedure demo1 (
    jre_version in varchar2 := '1.4.2_01',
    debug_info in varchar2 := 'false',
    compress_buffer in varchar2 := 'false',
    optimize_buffer in varchar2 := 'true'
    ) as
    begin
    interface.initialize('demo1_init','JGR Demo 1',jre_version,debug_info,compress_buffer,optimize_buffer);
    end;
    create or replace procedure demo1_init as
    begin
    toolkit.initialize;

    Is it sound like Oracle Portal?
    But you want to save a layer 9iAS.
    Basically, that was the WebDB.(Oracle changed the name to Portal when version 3.0)
    Over all, I agree with you.

    I would like to build 'ZOPE' inside Oracle DB as a back-end

  • Swing and Active rendering problem

    Hopefully this is the right place to post. I have a problem with active rendering and swing. Basically my code below messes up when I start rendering the swing either using repaint() or paint(g).
    If I use repaint() then the gui flickers like mad and if I use paint(g) then I get deadlocks when typing into the textbox.

    I really have no idea what your code is trying to do, but a few comments.
    1) There is no need to use a BufferStrategy since Swing is double buffered automatically
    2) Don't use a while loop with a Thread.sleep(). Chances are the GUI EDT is sleeping which makes the GUI unresponsive
    3) Use a Swing Timer for animation.
    If you need further help then you need to create a [Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE)|http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html], that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour.

  • Swing and jmf

    can u please have a look to the attached file
    i know that this involves the jmf API but I have the feeling that has to do more with swing, thats whay I post my question here
    this simple application is based on the MDI.java example of the jmf web
    pages
    I also added a slider and want to set the playback rate for the player from
    there if possible
    that is I want everytime that I move the slider and the value is biggerthan
    50 the rate to be reduced according to a simple calculation that converts
    the slider value to a value between 0 an1 for the rate...
    so all i want to do is pass the slider value to the player everytime that
    the slider changes value and this is bigger than 50
    the attached file can do that only when the player starts playing the
    file,,,,
    after the player has started and the rate is set I cant change it even if
    the slider moves
    when I tried to do that from within the stateChanged method of the slider I
    was getting a Nullpointer exception because of the EventDispatching thread,
    so I thought to take this piece of code out of there (create the setnewrate
    method in the jmframe instead),,,,but then of course doesnt work like I
    would want,,,,,
    do I have to register the class that implements the frame for the player as
    a ChangeListener on the slider to achieve that, is something like that
    possible....
    I know that swing is not supposed to be thread safe, so maybe this is what
    the problem is after all...any suggestions to that direction?
    Can u please have a look??
    I am a beginner so any help would really be very much appreciated
    thanx :)

    did you ever resolve this.
    I may be having similar problems
    I have an JMF application running under webstart. It runs ok in Java 1.3
    Now I am trying to get ti to run under Java 1.4. The attached error is rather useless,
    but by guess at what is happening is that the JMF control has some .awt. stuff included
    but that Java 1.4 emulates .awt. in swing. But something was not set and the default does not
    work.
    This error messages does not appear in the 1.3 run
    Any suggestions would be greatly appriatated.

  • Problem with Double Buffering and Swing

    Hi
    I made a game and basically it works pretty well, my only problem is it flickers really badly right now. I read up on a whole lot of forums about double buffering and none of those methods seemed to work. Then I noticed that Swing has double buffering built in so I tried that but then I get compilation errors and I'm really not sure why. My original code was a console application and worked perfectly, then I ported it into a JApplet and it still works but it flickers and thats what I'm tryign to fix now.
    The code below is in my main class under the constructor.
    Heres the double buffering code I'm trying to use, I'm sure you all seen it before lol
    public void update(Graphics g)
              // initialize buffer
              if (dbImage == null)
                   dbImage = createImage(this.getSize().width, this.getSize().height);
                   dbg = dbImage.getGraphics();
              // clear screen in background
              dbg.setColor(getBackground());
              dbg.fillRect(0, 0, this.getSize().width, this.getSize().height);
              // draw elements in background
              dbg.setColor(getForeground());
              paint(dbg);
              // draw image on the screen
              g.drawImage(dbImage, 0, 0, this);
         }My paint is right under neath and heres how it looks
    This snipet of code works but when I change the method to
    public paintComponent(Graphics g){
    super.paintComponent(g)...
    everythign stops working and get a compilation error and says that it can't find paintComponent in javax.swing.JFrame.
    public void paint(Graphics g)
              super.paint(g);
              //if game starting display menue
              if (show_menue)
                   //to restart lives if player dies
                   lives = 3;
                   menue.draw_menue(g);
                   menue_ufo1.draw_shape(g);
                   menue_ufo2.shape_color = Color.DARK_GRAY;
                   menue_ufo2.draw_shape(g);
                   menue_ufo3.shape_color = Color.BLUE;
                   menue_ufo3.draw_shape(g);
                   menue_ufo4.shape_color = new Color(82, 157, 22);
                   menue_ufo4.draw_shape(g);
                   menue_ufo5.draw_shape(g);
                   menue_ufo6.shape_color = new Color(130, 3, 3); ;
                   menue_ufo6.draw_shape(g);
                   menue_turret.draw_ship(g);
                   menue_ammo.draw_ammo(g);
              else
                   //otherwise redraw game objects
                   gunner.draw_ship(g);
                   y_ammo.draw_ammo(g);
                   grass.draw_bar(g);
                   o_ufo.draw_shape(g);
                   b_ufo.draw_shape(g);
                   m_ufo.draw_shape(g);
                   s_ufo.draw_shape(g);
                   z_ufo.draw_shape(g);
                   xx_ufo.draw_shape(g);
                   info.draw_bar(g);
                   live_painter.draw_lives(g, lives);
                   score_painter.draw_score(g, score);
                   level_display.draw_level(g, level);
                   explosion.draw_boom(g);
         }I just want to get rid of the flickering for now so any help will be greatly appreciated. Depending which will be simpler I can either try to double buffer this program or port it all to swing but I'm not sure which elements are effected by AWT and which by Swing. Also I read some of the Java documentation but couldn't really understand how to implement it to fix my program.
    Thanks in advance
    Sebastian

    This is a simple animation example quickly thrown together. I have two classes, an animation panel which is a JPanel subclass that overrides paintComponent and draws the animation, and a JApplet subclass that simply holds the animation panel in the applet's contentpane:
    SimpleAnimationPanel.java
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.Point;
    import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
    import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
    import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.net.MalformedURLException;
    import java.net.URL;
    import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    import javax.swing.Timer;
    class SimpleAnimationPanel extends JPanel
        private static final int DELAY = 20;
        public static final int X_TRANSLATION = 2;
        public static final int Y_TRANSLATION = 2;
        private Point point = new Point(5, 32);
        private BufferedImage duke = null;
        private Timer timer = new Timer(DELAY, new TimerAction());
        public SimpleAnimationPanel()
            try
                // borrow an image from sun.com
                duke = ImageIO.read(new URL(
                        "http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/images/duke.wave.med.gif"));
            catch (MalformedURLException e)
                e.printStackTrace();
            catch (IOException e)
                e.printStackTrace();
            setPreferredSize(new Dimension(600, 400));
            timer.start();
        // do our drawing here in the paintComponent override
        @Override
        protected void paintComponent(Graphics g)
            super.paintComponent(g);
            if (duke != null)
                g.drawImage(duke, point.x, point.y, this);
        private class TimerAction implements ActionListener
            @Override
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
                int x = point.x;
                int y = point.y;
                Dimension size = SimpleAnimationPanel.this.getSize();
                if (x > size.width)
                    x = 0;
                else
                    x += X_TRANSLATION;
                if (y > size.height)
                    y = 0;
                else
                    y += Y_TRANSLATION;
                point.setLocation(new Point(x, y)); // update the point
                SimpleAnimationPanel.this.repaint();
    }AnimationApplet.java
    import java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException;
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
    public class AnimationApplet extends JApplet
        public void init()
            try
                SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(new Runnable()
                    public void run()
                        // construct the panel
                        JPanel simpleAnimation = new SimpleAnimationPanel();
                        // put it in the contentPane of the JApplet
                        getContentPane().add(simpleAnimation);

            catch (InterruptedException e)
                e.printStackTrace();
            catch (InvocationTargetException e)
                e.printStackTrace();
    }Here's a 3rd bonus class that shows how to put the JPanel into a stand-alone program, a JFrame. It's very similar to doing it in the JApplet:
    AnimationFrame.java
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    public class AnimationFrame
        private static void createAndShowUI()
            JFrame frame = new JFrame("SimpleAnimationPanel");
            frame.getContentPane().add(new SimpleAnimationPanel());
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            frame.pack();
            frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
            frame.setVisible(true);
        public static void main(String[] args)
            java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable()
                public void run()
                    createAndShowUI();
    }Edited by: Encephalopathic on Mar 15, 2008 11:01 PM

  • Problem in Opening HTML Page in Internet Explorer from my Swing Application

    Hi,
    I am opening a HTML file in Internet Explorer from my swing application.I am using the code given below
    private final static String WIN_FLAG = "url.dll,FileProtocolHandler";
    private final static String WIN_PATH = "rundll32";
    String cmd = WIN_PATH + " " + WIN_FLAG + " " + url;
    // url is HTML file Path
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec( cmd );
    Here there are two things i need to address ...
    1)The HTML file is opening up,but it always opens behind the swing application,that makes me every time to maximize the HTML file after it being opened up.I want to open it in front of the Swing Application.I need to implement "Always On Top" functionality for the html page.
    2)Whenever i trigger action to open different HTML page,it opens in new Internet Explorer window.
    I need to open it in same IE window.
    how to solve out these problems ??? any help would be greatly appreciated .Thanks in advance.

  • Certificate support in Java Swing application

    Hi There,
    I am new to this Certificate thing and running into issues! Would appreciate for all the help and please ignore for any stupid questions.
    Here is my scenario.
    1. I do have a client server application and client is a java swing application which connects to a Server application (Using Jetty 4.2.22 as embedded server)
    2. Initially, it had a self signed certificate but goal is to support third party certificate (i.e import in the server and then show warning to the client during login)
    If somebody has already done this or point me to some example (using Jetty APIs) that would be great help. If not, here is what I am trying to do and some questions.
    1. I tried to get some free SSL certificate from the web and imported into the server's KeyStore.
    If I do a list from the server using Keystore, this is what it looks like
    keytool -list -keystore /tmp/keystore -storepass genview
    Keystore type: JKS
    Keystore provider: SUN
    Your keystore contains 2 entries

    QUESTION 1 : why the third party certificate's entry as "trustedCertEntry"? Is it always like this? Do I need to have only one certificate at a time? (If so, just remove the self signed and have 3rd party one)
    My Jetty server comes up but when I connect from Client Swing App, the "getServerCertificates()" method only returns one entry i.e self signed one but not the third party one.
    I am using like this
    URL url = new URL("https://127.0.0.1:port");
    HttpsURLConnection conn = (HttpsURLConnection) url.openConnection();
    conn.connect();
    Certificate[] certs = conn.getServerCertificates();
    Is not this API supposed to return all the server's certificate?
    Please guide me or instruct me what to do.
    Thanks,

  • I can't figure out the Keynote title option. I'm a newbie so forgive my ignorance. I want to put an image in the swing arm, but I can't figure it out.

    I even tried opening in Motion and inserting it there, but when I bring it back to fc it's not there. I also want to change the background to an image or at least solid white. When I put an image in the Dropzone it doesn't show up. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    To change the title background to use a clip in the drop zone, do just as Jim said.
    Also, place the clip that want to appear in the "swing arm" right below the title in the timeline.

  • Please help: RMI and Swing/AWT issue

    Hi guys, I've been having a lot of trouble trying to get a GUI application to work with RMI. I'd appreciate any help. Here's the story:
    I wrote a Java application and its GUI using Netbeans. In a nutshell, the application is about performing searches. I am now at the point where I need exterior programs to use my application's search capabilities, thus needing RMI. Such exterior programs are to call methods currently implemented in my application.
    I implemented RMI, and got the client --> server communication working. However, the GUI just breaks. It starts outputting exceptions, gets delayed, doesn't update properly, some parts of it stop working.... basically hysterical behavior.
    Now take a look at this line within my server class:
    Naming.rebind("SearchProgram", mySearchProgram);
    If I take it out, RMI obviously does not work... but the application and its GUI work flawlessly. If I put it in, the RMI calls work, but the GUI's above symptoms occur again. Among the symptoms are null pointer exceptions which all look similar, are related to "AWT-EventQueue-0", and keep ocurring. Here's just snippet of the errors outputted:

    There are no complaints about anything within my code, it's all GUI related whenever I make a bind() or rebind() call.
    Again, any help here would be great... cause this one's just beating me.
    Thanks!

    Maybe you want to change that worker thread to
    not do RMI but anything else (dummy data) to see if it really is RMI, I doubt it, I think you are updating some structures that have to do with swing GUI and hence you will hang.
    Just check this out.
