Switch stack IOS upgrade

Hi,
I am planning on upgrading a 3750x switch stack to a slightly newer version.
My question is, would I have to load the new image onto each switch in the stack or just the master?
Thanks,
Waqas

Specify the IOS so we can determine if you are going to a bad IOS version.
My question is, would I have to load the new image onto each switch in the stack or just the master?
1.  Download the IOS file with the TAR filename from the Cisco website.
2.  Compare the MD5 hash value of this file against the one in the Cisco website.  The MD5 hash value must match.
3.  Use the command to upgrade your IOS:  archive download-sw /destination N tftp:///IOS.tar
NOTE:  /destination N - The "N" means the switch members in a stack.  If you have three switches in a stack then you use /destination 1 /destination 2 /destination 3.

  • Switch 3750E IOS upgrade failure

    Hi all,
I have a brand new switch 3750E (Model number : WS-C3750E-48TD-S), which would be upgraded to latest IOS.
I issue the following command to upgrade IOS:
    switch#archive download-sw /overwrite tftp://1.1.1.2/c3750e-universal-tar.122-46.SE.tar
    The output is below:
    examining image...

Old image for switch 1: flash:c3750e-universal-mz.122-35.SE5
Old image will be deleted after download.
The switch got frozen, and I have to power cycle it. Then the switch boots up with old IOS.
It seems new IOS image file didn't overwrite the old one. I tried 3 times, the result. Any suggestion? Should I just delete the old one and archive new one?
    Your help is appreciated.
    Ethan

Hi Ethan, when the archive download is completed or successful the boot variable will automatically be updated with the new IOS image.
The overwrite keyword deletes the existing or current image in order to make room for the new one. If you use either /leave-old-sw, or /safe then this could cause problems if there is insufficent flash.
In both cases the old software is not deteled, with /safe it will delete the old image once the new one has been downloaded sucessfully.
If the overwrite does not appear to be successful, then I would recommend deleting the current image first before downloading the new archive without the need to overwrite:-
    delete /force /recursive flash:/file-url
    Hope this helps
    Allan.

  • 3850 stack IOS upgrade

    Hi,
Is it possible to upgrade the IOS on a cisco 3850 stack in a non disruptive way?
Reloading 1 switch at a time?
Or do you need to reload the entire stack at once, like a 3750 stack?

"And repeat the same command for the second switch"
You actually dont have to do this.  First verify that you are in "INSTALL" mode by issuing a "show version."  Once you have this file in your local flash, just run the following:
    Switch#software install file flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.02.02.SE.150-1.EX2.bin switch 1-2
**This will expand the .bin file onto your switch and ask you to reload. After reload, you will be on new version

    Updating Cisco IOS XE Software
When the switch is in install mode, you can install any new Cisco IOS XE Software bundle by using the software Installcommand.
Note: This command works only when the Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switch is booted in install mode.

  • Upgrading 3750X Stack IOS (suggestions)

I'm reading all sorts of problematic issues with upgrading the 3750X stack IOS on the internet. I have never performed this before and would like anyone'e suggestion on how I should do this and what I should be looking for. I will be upgrading from 12.2(53r)SE2 to 12.2.(55)SE8.

Let's say you have three 3750X in a stack.  OK?
So before you even begin to push the IOS to your switch, you need to download the correct IOS for each member of your stack.  Make sure each member of your switch is found in the Supported Hardware list.
Download the "universal" TAR file.  Next, once you've downloaded the IOS, make sure you verify the MD5 hash value against the value found in the Cisco website.  The MD5 hash value must match.
Make sure that all members of your switch stack have the same licenses and feature set.
Ok, now you've got the preparatory set, you do the actual command to push the IOS into your stack.  The command is very simple.  Remember, I presume that you have three switches in a stack.
    The command is:  archive download-sw /destination 1 /destination 2 /destination 3 tftp:///filename.tar
Using the simplified command above, this will instruct the switch to download the IOS from your TFTP server into the switch stack master's memory.  The "/destination X" means it will be pushed out to each member one-at-a-time.  The boot statement will also be changed so the stack will know what IOS to use.
    Hope this helps.

  • No valid license found after IOS upgrade on C3750x switch

    HI,
Two switches below are working fine as a stack with IOS c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin & ipbase license.
    Switch#1 (Master, WS-C3750X-24P-S)
    Switch#2 (Member, WS-C3750X-24P-S)
After IOS Upgrade to c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE7.bin, The stack was broken. Switch#2 didn’t recognise valid ipbase license with new IOS and came up with lanbase license instead. Therefore stack cannot be composed due to license mismatch between Switch#1 (ipbase) and switch#2(lanbase).
I’m wondering why Switch#2 didn’t recognise ipbase license with new IOS even though IPASE is running well with previous IOS.
Here is excerpt from “show version” with 15.x image on Switch#2.
    License Level: lanbase
License Type: Default. No valid license found.
    Next reload license Level: lanbase
Here is excerpt from “show version” with 12.x image on Switch Stack.
    License Level: ipbase
    License Type: Permanent
    Next reload license Level: ipbase
    Thanks
    Jeong

    Thanks guys,
I have fixed the issue by configuring  'license boot level ipbase' on the member switch#2. The switch recognised IPBASE license well and joined the stack successfully.

  • Cat3k 3850 stack IOS-XE Upgrade question

I have a stack of three cat 3850 switches running IOS-XE 3.03.00SE.  I need to upgrade them to 3.03.05SE to resolve outstanding security bulletins.
Most of the devices connecting to the stack have redundant connections to two different switches in the stack.
Is it possible to upgrade the switch software and reboot the switches one at a time in order to maintain connectivity for the devices with redundant connections?  I've been looking at upgrade docs including http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-3850-series-switches/117552-technote-cat3850-00.pdf  but I don't see this addressed.  Back when we bought this hardware, our Cisco account mgr said this would be possible, but I have not been able to verify it.

Is it possible to upgrade the switch software and reboot the switches one at a time in order to maintain connectivity for the devices with redundant connections?
That is not currently possible.  You would have to load the new image in all switches and reboot the entire stack.

  • 3850 switch stack upgrade with minimum downtime

I was wondering if it is possible to do an upgrade of the individual stack members one at a time?
Is it possible to go from one major release to another doing this?
Is it possible to do this going from one minor release to another?
Is it possible to upgrade one stack member at a time within the maintenance release?
    Thanks

I was wondering if it is possible to do an upgrade of the individual stack members one at a time?
Ans: Yes you can, but the switch will leave the stack
Is it possible to go from one major release to another doing this?
Is it possible to do this going from one minor release to another?
Is it possible to upgrade one stack member at a time within the maintenance release?
Ans for all above 3: For Stack configuration to work properly, switches must have the exactly same ISO
Recommendation: If they're many switches in stack,
    1. upload the IOS file in all the switches
    2. change the boot order in running config by:
boot system flash: <new ios fiile name>
boot system flash: <old ios fiile name>
    3.  take the reload one  by one & copy the running config
    4. in this case, basically you would be making the new parallel switch stack by adding the reloaded switch with same config but with new IOS image

  • Can I use DHCP snooping and IOS DHCP server on the same switch stack

    Hello,
I am shortly going to be deploying a Cisco CallManager solution for a customer whose network comprises stacks of Catalyst 3850 switches.
There is no separate core/server farm switch so the CallManager servers, voice gateways and IP phones will all plug into the same stack and be in the same VLAN (not my choice!).
For security we want to enable DHCP snooping and were planning on using the IOS DHCP server on the Catalyst switch stack.
Will this work? - when I enable DHCP snooping in networks with separate access layer switches I set the uplinks to the core as trusted links.
I am not sure whether DHCP snooping will work in this case. Do I need to set the VLAN interface on the switch as trusted, is this even possible?
Unfortunately I do not have access to a layer 3 switch to test this at the moment.
    Thanks

    Nope.  That's the issue.
They'll sync on a third device acting as a hotspot, but the device sending a signal is not "on" the network it creates so the airport is all by itself on that network.  At least that is what it looks like to me.  Anyone have another take on it?  Seems pretty silly that an iPad can put out a wifi signal, an Airport Express can receive a wifi signal, and yet there is no simple way to get them to communicate under this particular condition.

    Hey SOcchiogrosso,
The image management is alrealdy possible on PI 1.2 if you have a lifecycle license.
You can perform an image import to your repository an then disbribute to your devices.
Go to [Operate] > [Software Image Management]. There you will be able to maintain and deploy your images.
If you want to get further on this, take a look on the following document:

  • Cisco switch ios upgradation

how can I upgrade cisco 2960s switch's ios.
what commands will be used for it

    Hello Anupam,
    1. You need to copy the IOS from CCO.
    2. The same IOS needs to copied on to the flash.
    #copy tftp : flash
    #tftp ip address <x.x.x.x>
    3. I would suggest before upgrading the IOS. Please verify the MD5 checksum and confirm with CCO that it matches. This confirms that while copying the image didnt get corrupt.
    #verify /md5 Flash:<IOSimage>.bin
    4. Once you see the IOS in flash. Please configure below.
    boot-start-marker
boot system flash <IOS image name>.bin
    boot-end-marker
    5. Save the confguration.
    #wr
    6. reload the router. Post reload you can run " show version" to check if device has come up with new IOS.

  • Can't write to flash1: in a 3 switch stack

I have a 3 switch stack at a remote office consisting of a 48 port 3750X, 24 port 3750X PoE, and a 48 port 3750v2.  Currently this stack is functioning normally and is running 12.2(55)SE3 (universal on the X's, ipservices on the 3750v2).  I want to upgrade to SE8 so that's 12.2(55)SE8 as I see in the release notes there are some vulnerabilities fixed in SSH.
For the life of me, I cannot copy the new file to flash1: which is the 24 port 3750X PoE.  This switch has 20 IP phones and 2 Cisco Access points on it and is vital to the branch office.  I have spare non poe switches but not spare poe switches (looking for approval), so go figure I am having the issue with the flash memory on this switch.
If I try to tftp the file c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin to flash1, I get Error opening flash1:/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin (Bad file number).
I can get the file tftp'd to flash2 (the 48 port 3750X) fine, but if I try to copy it from flash2 to flash1, I get the same error (bad file number).
Cisco TAC reccomened format flash1: , so I tried that and get Error formatting flash1 (Device or resource busy).   OK so on my own I figure maybe its corrupt, lets run fsck /test flash1: and see.  NOPE can't run that either... Error fscking flash1: (Device or resource busy).   Ok now lets see if any other sessions are hung where something or someone has locked flash1... so I run systat and I am the only user on the switch stack.  Ok so no one else has a hung connection that may have had a write in process frozen.
So what should I do?  The uptime is 30 weeks, 23 hours, 3 minutes.  The last switch in the stack, the regular 3750v2 has an uptime of 15 weeks, 1 day, 20 hours, 28 minutes because it was added to the stack back then.
Anyway the network is fine and functioning... just looking to standardize all our 3750's to the 122-55.SE8 release because it is the one IOS that we've had the best luck with.

Well after a few days of SILENCE from Cisco TAC, they got back to me again and said to reseat the flash again!  I said tell me how to reseat the flash when it is soldered onto the motherboard of a 3750X switch?
So they responded with this and they are going to replace the switch:
The error message( Error opening flash1:/c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin (Bad file number)) indicates that the flash is not visible,
This issue can be solved by the following steps :
Reseat the flash if you cannot,
Format the flash if you cannot,
    Replace the device(hardware failure)
As I can see from this case that the device is unable to format the flash, the only way to solve the issue is to replace the switch 1,
I can tell you support has really gone downhilll.  So much that I am considering Extreme Networks, Arista and Broacade for an upcoming 10gbps switching project.  Another case we had with them was due to a random switch stack crash on 12.2.58SE2.  Well they had the entire show tech ouput and they still reccomended to move to 15.0.2SE4.  Well that was BAD advice.  When you have 6 3750V2's and 3 3750X's in one stack of 9, release 15 doesn't have enough memory to even run a console.  We had to break the stack and one by one go to 12.2.55SE8.  I don't know what Cisco is thinking.  How can they say oh run this release but then they see its a huge mixed breed stack with a large configuration and they don't take memory into consideration?  I even asked are you sure, and they said yes we assure you this release will solve your problems.
So between that bad advice and this bad advice, I am really discouraged at throwing more money into "SmartNet" contracts.

  • Blocked Stack Ports on 2960X-48FPD-L Stack (Unstable Switch Stack!) Spanning Tree?

I am having an issue where 2 2960X-48FPD-L Switches in a redundant flexstack (stack port 1 SW1 to port  2 SW2 and port 2 SW1 to port 1 SW2) ring.
At first running the 15.0(2).EX5 (and earlier EX3, and EX4) version IOS yielded all the ports on the stack master switch refusing to run spanning tree and would only link in amber and not pass any traffic other than CDP information (the slave switch linked in fine).
I upgraded to 15.2(3)E and this solved the problem of the ports not linking in green and participating in spanning tree.
Now, however, about every week or two I lose connectivity to the switch stack and I was able to go to the switch stack locally and found that for some reason the switch stack is blocking and unblocking VLANs on StackPort1 frequently (see below).  When I was at the site, I sometimes had connectivity, sometimes not.  A stack hard reboot brought everything back up, but this is the second time this has occurred and I would expect the same problem in the next week or so.
Has anyone else run into these issues, and have you found a solution?
I'm guessing that if I either get rid of the redundancy on the switch stack or stack using Ethernet cables between switches the problem will go away, but then what is the point of using stackable switches in a non redundant low speed stack.  It seems to me that Spanning tree thinks that I have a spanning tree loop going on with the stack ports which I didn't even think was possible.
    What do you think?

    Jim,
We have also the same problem with our 2960-X switches (access) connecting to a pair of 4500x (VSS) except our issue is with Portchannel with 2 physical links connecting the 2960xs to the 4500.
If we disconnect one of the physical links from the portchannel everything works fine, but when we connect the same physical link back all users lose connectivity and the physical link starts flapping. Here are some of the messages we see in the logs when both physical links are in the portchannel:

We have upgraded to 15.0(2a).EX5 and still have the same issue.
We have a ticket open with Cisco and have sent them all the logs and debugs and waiting to hear back from IOS developers.

  • Help Setting Up A Cisco Lab For IOS Upgrade?

    Hi.
I've collected quite a few routers and switches over the past few months that have what seems to be corrupted or no IOS. I have a small lab set up to test parts, and I was wondering how I can network them in such a way where I have an active functional network (for testing purposes, not for actual internet use), that I can connect routers or switches to and upgrade or change the IOS version.
I have all the hardware and cabling needed, and I have the Cisco IOS software for the routers I need, I've just never upgraded or changed an IOS on a router or switch before.
    I have:
a Cisco 7505 with an RSP4+, 256MB RAM, 16MB Flash, and it's full of the modules that hold the PA cards (I forget what it's called, but I just use it to throw PA cards in to test 8 at a time).
A Cisco 3450 (I believe, 3400 series anyhow) that I believe is 64/16, that again I use for testing.
    Two Cisco 2621 64/16, for testing WIC's, VWIC's and NM's.
Two Cisco 2950 series switches, one I'd like to use to actually connect to my LAN already implimented seperatly, and one to connect to this mini lab LAN.
So again, I'm wondering how I can set these up on a small LAN just for testing purposes and so I can just connect a device and upgrade it's IOS. I also need information about the TFTP server and all of that as I haven't been able to find out much info on it.
Thanks in advance for any help :).

    Hi
First of all make sure that the flash is enough for IOS you are loading. Here is guide for loading IOS.
(1)Download and install tftp server from www.solarwinds.net
(2)Give IP on ethernet port of router
(3)Give IP on computer which should be in same subnet that of router
    (4)Follow the following steps:
    Router#copy tftp: flash:
Address or name of remote host []? 192.168.1.67
    Source filename []? c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-15.T9.bin
    Destination filename [c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-15.T9.bin]?
    Accessing tftp://192.168.1.67/c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-15.T9.bin...
    Erase flash: before copying? [confirm]
Erasing the flash filesystem will remove all files! Continue? [confirm]
    Erasing device... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ...erased
    Erase of flash: complete
    Loading c1700-k9o3sy7-mz.122-15.T9.bin from 192.168.1.67 (via FastEthernet0): !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    [OK - 9190488/18380800 bytes]
    Verifying checksum... OK (0xF7C5)
    9190488 bytes copied in 129.664 secs (71244 bytes/sec)
(5)Reboot and your new IOS is ready.

  • POE 3560 Issue after IOS upgrade

    Hello,
I having issue where 6 WLAN AP's not coming back uo after reboot and IOS upgrade of 3560 POE swtiches - . Prior to changes here most if not all ALL the 23 Aps were mainly on one switch, Now after these changes they are now spread over three switches ( 3560's) - with 17 coming back on line
I am sure its not the power limitation of the switch(s) as the one switch I am TS at present had a fairly large allocation of the aps attached prior to ios upgrade and reload. and the available power value now showing is applicable.for 8 AP's
I have tried various TS steps to try and bring them back up - A couple of things I would like to try but I am restricted to do so is to check the APS physically or downgrade the ios!
Any input on this matter would be truly appreciated.- (attached is the log buffer debug)

You upgraded the IOS to the switch?  I shudder at the thought of what old version did you upgrade FROM.
    Available:370.0(w) Used:110.4(w) Remaining:259.6(w)
You've got more than enough PoE left.
Only two things comes to my mind:
    1.   Cable issue - Unfortunately, the 3560 is a non-GigabitEthernet and this particular sub-model does NOT support TDR.
    2.  Hardware failure - Read THIS.
