Switching b/w Word Processing & Page Layout

Is there a way to transfer from a doc in WP-mode to Page Layout mode?
Sorry for this very obvious question, but I can seem to find any info in the documentation or on the forum. Any help is, of course, massively appreciated.
Cheers!

UConn,
I'll use the same metaphor I used in another thread. Templates are like tablecloths. So when you set the table, then decide you want to change the tablecloth, you can't easily just switch over to another one. You have to remove the objects, then start over.
Whether you're in Word Processing or Page Layout mode is determined by which template you chose when you started up Pages. You can't just switch to another mode, because it's a separate template. But I've found that the major difference between the two modes is that the WP mode has a text layer, while the PL mode doesn't. If you began in the WP mode, you can just click on the page and begin typing; you can't do that in the PL mode. You have to create a text box or other object in order to place text.
Hope this helps.

  • Savining my Appleworks word processing pages to PDF

When I save a word processing page (done in Appleworks), to the PDF format, the file is multiplied hugely in size. Is this normal? Office Depot has trouble opening them to print my books. Will using the "compress PDF" interfere with the files in any manner? Will it damage the photos?

    Barbara,
I have never used the compressed version, but the increase in size of the file is often a common occurrence of the PDF generator that Apple has used. This was more prevelent in Panther (10.3) than in Tiger (10.4). The PDF generator in Tiger much improved over earlier versions. The only reason I would see that Office Depot has trouble reading your PDF is if you did not check the box to attach the extension.pdf to the file. Adding the extension to the file enables Windows users to double click to open it. The files will always open if the application is opened first and then the document is opened within the application.
If you purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat, you can that applications PDF generator and then the files are much smaller than the word document. Since Adobe makes the reader software, their PDF generators are much better, produce higher quality results, most importantly, and are able to have the PDF significantly less in size without losing any of the features or quality.
    Good Luck

  • Switching from Word processing to Layout mode

    Hi,
I have old documents that always open as word processing. This makes it hard to group select items. Is there a way to open it as a layout document instead, or to switch on the fly.
    thanks,
    Tim

What I cannot do it WP mode is drag select multiple items. (Maybe the would group select confused you) Let's say I have 30 frames on a page with text. I can seem to drag select the ones I want. I have to shift-click each individual one. While in Layout mode I can drag select them.
EG - a year box with boys on every other line. I used to be able to hold shift, then drag select every other line and then change the frames to blue. But now I have to click each one.
Is there a way to do that in WP mode?
Or is there a way to open a '06 document and have it be in layout mode?
If not all of my docs are slated to redo.

  • Change From "Word Processing" to "Layout"

Hello everyone! Is there any way to change the format of a document from "Word Processing" mode to "Layout" mode? I noticed that all Pages '06 documents are imported into '08 as "Word Processing", even when it is actually a layout document. I tried looking through menus to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
    Miles
P.S. I also noticed that iWork '08 runs a lot slower than '06 on my Core 2 Duo iMac. Anyone else noticing this sluggishness?

It's easier to go the other way. If you Export the PL doc to Word and open the Word doc in Pages, it will come back as WP. Now you have two WP docs that can be easily combined. The conversion to Word and Back is not likely to be perfect, but it may be better than having to do all that Copying and Pasting.

  • Using Windows 7 and Firefox 10.0.2, at random times all home page images "disappear" when switching between web sites. Page layout on some web sites is lost. Requires removing and downloading Firefox to restore. Any ideas?

I have recently (6 months ago) purchased and use an HP Pavilion desktop with Windows 7. At times, when especially active (several windows open) and switching between windows or using links to connect with another web page, all the images on the home home page "disappear", that is to say there is space, but no image, as if the page did not load correctly. When this happens, pages other than the home page also do not display images.
Same pages display correctly in Explorer whenever this happens.

    Hi
Can you please try setting up full persmission in the security properties for everyone on the wsconfig folder C:\ColdFusion10\config\wsconfig  and restart ColdFusion Server.

  • Manual control over word processing page size.

Please help. I cannot find any tool or option that allows me to to create a word document wider than 8.5 inches. I want to create an envelope that is 9.5" x 4.125". What do I need to do? Thanks.

    Hi more,
You should give some thought to changing that user name—this forum, and the entire discussions area is a place for solving problems, not an are in which to rant.
Page size (or 'Paper size') is set in Page Setup, found in the File menu. The sizes offered depend on your printer driver.
If Custom Size is among the options, you'll be able to set a size to match your envelope.
If not, and there's no listed size that's a close match, you could use US Letter, but change the page orientation from Portrait to Landscape. Then go to Format > Document and set the margins to allow printing only in the space that the envelope will occupy, and to place that space as close to the top and left as possible. Try these settings:
    Top: 0.1
    Bottom: 4.5
    Left: 0.1
    Right: 1.5
Adjustments will be required if your printer objects to the small margins (top and left).

    Barry

  • What is a good word processing program?

Can someone suggest a good word processing app for Mac?

You can purchase Office 2011 - Mactopia - if you want the best. Or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
TextEdit is included with OS X. It is not a high level word processor but it may be adequate.
A good free alternative to TextEdit with more features is Bean 3.2.5.
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Generating html from word processing document

I've got a fairly short two-column newsletter with six graphics that I want to publish in html using AW v6.2. I select save as html but the resulting document includes none of my text or graphics, hmmm. So I look at the web templates starting points and export these templates as html and get the same result - headers but no content. TIA!

If you are expecting to get a page of HTML that will look exactly like your word processing page, that is not going to happen. ThisUser Tip tells you probably more than you want to know about creating HTML in Appleworks, but I would strongly suggest not doing this in Appleworks. If you don't have a regular web program, download the free NVU (nvu.org) and use that instead.
BTW, the "web templates" in Appleworks are not templates for web pages, but rather regular appleworks document templates that are hosted on a web server for download.

  • Switching between page layout and word processing

I can't seem to switch between page layout and word processing view.  I've read all the posts on this and still can't figure out why I can't just type a document into Pages.  The only option I have in page layout view is to type into text boxes, which is not what I want.  I just want to type a letter for crying out loud.
Before I get all the rants about reading User Guides, etc.  *I have*.  I've also searched on here and in-app help and just don't understand the fuzzy/non-existant answers.  Obviously, I'm a newbie, so please don't jump all over me for this.  If it was Word - I could do this in NO time.  I just find it incredibly frustrating that inputting a normal document should be so difficult.
Is "Pages" *not* a word processing program?  Is it just a cut and paste application?  Sorry for the tone - I mean no disrespect - it's just that I've been fooling around with this for DAYS and I just don't have time to spare anymore.  I really need to get this done.
Can somebody give me a straightforward answer on how to just type a normal document into pages without using text boxes?
Thanks and I apologize for not being mac-savvy.  It took some of us a lot longer to see the light =)

Here is a script doing the conversion task for you.
    Open a Page Layout document
    run this script:
    --{code}
set p2t to (path to temporary items from user domain) as text
set path_2_doc to p2t & (do shell script "date +_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.doc")
    tell application "Pages"
      save document 1 in path_2_doc
      open file path_2_doc
    end tell
    --{code}
    that's all folks.

  • Mixed Page Layout and Word Processing Modes

Hi Everyone, I find myself increasingly using Pages 09 in word processing mode then creating a new document in Page layout mode to create a front cover for that document.
Is it possible to combine the two modes and therefore having only one file to deal with.
    Thanks in advance

There is no background in Page Layout mode, just stacked objects, repeated over and over to make the document grow fat beyond belief.
Wrong! The picture which is stored in the captured page is not repeated over and over in the document.
It is stored only once exactly as a background image.
In *Page layout mode* facing pages is broken, all that switches from left to right is the footer and header.
    Perfectly normal behavior.
It's the same in Word processing format.
The setting of margins for facing pages apply to three items:
    main text layer
    header
    footer
It doesn't apply to floating items.
In Layout document there is no main text layer so the margins apply logically only to header and feater.
So the truth is that nothing is broken.
It just don't behave the way you wrongly assumed.

  • Can I mix Pages page layout and word processing together in one document?

Hello there ! I am quite new to Pages and I am desperate to learn as i want to get rid of everything being Microsoft
As you all know when you open Pages you can choose between page layout and word processing !
the thing is i thought that after using a page layout you could just go with word processing easily... well no, you can't, but i'm sure i'm missing something...
For exemple i really like the catalogue brochure and it would be perfect for me to start a project... but after a few pages, i can just add blank pages and if i want to type text, i have to add text boxes... i don't want that, I want word processing... and another thing in this brochure i can't add table of content because it is not by default in the template...
So my question is quite basic here, can we link Page layout and word processing without having to use text boxes and everything ?
    Thanks in advance !
    Have a good day

    Alexander,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
The simple answer is no. What differentiates page layout from word processing mode is that the PL mode has no text layer. So everything that goes on the page must be an object of some kind. And any pages you add to a PL document must also be PL. You can't mix the two modes. One way around it is to start with a blank page, insert a text box, then stretch the box so that it covers the entire page. You can the type in it as if it were a text layer in a WP file. You can even capture that page so that you can add it automatically when you need it, or save it as a template.
As for building a Table of Contents, it appears that Pages only sees text styles that are on the text layer, which means it won't see styles that are in objects -- which means it won't work with a PL document. From being a long-time reader of this discussion group, I've noticed it's rare that someone wants to add a ToC to a PL document.
If you find that you're going to be mixing text and graphics, start with a word processing template. If you really like the Catalog Brochure, you could always copy some or all of its elements over to a blank WP template.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can you make a mail merge from a page layout?  I can successfully do so from the word processing section of pages

I am trying to mailmerge to a form and need to center certain sections on the same line.  Impossible to accomplish in the word processing portion because it wants to center the entire line.  I would like to use the page layout section but the "enter merge field" is gray.
I have been able to accomplish the task using Filemaker but some of my constituents do not have Filemaker and I would like to make a template for them to use with numbers, excel, etc.

Can't see what Layout mode could possibly offer that you don't have in Word Processing mode.
Tried using centre tabs? You are using tabs, and not just hammering away at the spacebar?

  • Combining word processing and page layout templates

Does anyone know how to (or if it's possible at all) merge or combine a Pages 09 document set up on the "Pages Layout" template with one set up on "Word Processing" template properly? Can these two templates "talk to each other"?
I'm trying to combine some of my separate class notes for my students into one file, and some were created in Page Layout, with visuals, charts, pics, etc. I also have some Word Document notes that I'd like to merge with the other notes to create one "class notes" file for my students. But I can't seem to do that, for some reason. I can copy individual pages from the Page Layout notes and paste them into my Word Document notes, but they paste as two pages (one page is blank). When I delete that page, the other one is deleted, too. I can't copy and paste from the other direction (word doc to page layout) at all, and like I said, the other way is a little off, as well.
Any ideas, or is this just not possible in Pages 09? Thanks.

    Re: Jerry
I'd like to stay in one or the other, but I just like features that are only in one or the other. For example, I like in WP mode that when I get to the end of a page of writing and keep going, a new page appears (with formatting and layout intact on the next). If I'm in PL mode and writing in a text box, it just goes beyond the viewable screen. I also like the ability to select and move around individual pages in PL mode, and that doesn't seem to be available in WP mode (they're all stuck together and move in clumps). But you're right, I'm just going to have to stick with one and figure out some workarounds for some things I like. Since I think I'll be more in WP mode, I'll try to move stuff over from PL.
    Re: Peter
Thanks for the advice... it's already helped me try to come up with some ways to fix things. The whole click away thing to give me floating objects has been great! You're right, this does seem like a design flaw, but I suppose Apple can't be all things to all people. Still, I'd like a little more...
    Re: Yvan
Hang in there! You're right, Pages is tough when trying to use created projects in other apps! Like you said, I'm working to rebuild the layout. By the way, my PL document was 16 pages, which when transferred to WP mode doubled in size! Sheesh...
Thanks to all—I think I'm going to be able to work through this "issue" after all. I appreciate everyone's help.

  • How do I make categories under My Templates, as is done in page layout and word-processing?

How do I make categories under My Templates, as is done in page layout and word-processing? I have over 50 of my own templates and want to categorize them. For example: son's homework, business, etc. Thanks

Here are some screenshots of my organization. Your sub-folders need to be in the same folder as My Templates, NOT in My Templates which is confusing.

  • Word Processing to Page Layout???

I've just a whole 100 page document in word processing (with lots of pictures). Is there any way that I could change the formating of the document from 'word-document' to 'page-layout' after the fact? Like with ONE click maybe?
    Or am I dreaming?

What benefit do you expect to get from this?
I think I can see a potential benefit. If you could easily put your text in full page text frames throughout the entire document, you could then go back and adjust the frame size on certain pages, where the layout requires it.
We may do all these tasks in the WP mode.
Linked text blocks are our friends.
We can do it, yes, but not easily. If you have a hundred pages, you need to connect one hundred text boxes by hand. In InDesign, you basically just shift-click once, and all the one hundred pages are created with linked text boxes in just a few seconds.
It would also be a way to easily create blank pages in the middle of the document.
Insert two page breaks do the trick.
It works, if you do not care where the blank page is. But if you want page 14 to be empty, two page breaks will not do it, as you do not know how the text will float around. In word processing mode, my spontaneous solution would be to insert a white floating picture that covers page 14, and make sure the text wraps around it.
InDesign has simpler solutions for this, but then it costs almost ten times as much as Pages.
In France it costs quite 13 times the price of the complete iWork package !
    Indeed.
Adobe's pricing policy is btw a mystery to me. InDesign's French version costs 1030 euro, but the English version is only 910 euro, even if you buy it in France. Do they really have to charge you 120 euro for speaking French?
Put another way, for the same price as one French copy, you can buy the English copy + iWork (in both French and English and a bunch of other languages) + dinner for two.
