Synching -Ipod to computer, or computer to iPod?

I had to have some work done on my laptop and now I have more songs on my iPod than on my computer.  I'd like them to match, but I don't want to lose the music on either one.  When I synch using iTunes, will I end up with all my music on both the iPod and the computer, or will one overide the other?

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time, so iTunes will override the iPod and replace its current contents with what is in the new/different library.
So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your Mac first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Synching ipod to computer

    Hello
I have had a shuffle for about 1 yr. I had it synched to my computer, something went wrong with the computer so it had to be reset to its original settings. I lost my itunes library in the process. I would like to be able to keep the songs on my ipod and still be able to buy new songs and add them. However, I keep getting a message telling me that I need to synch the ipod to this computer (which also means erasing the contents). This is frustrating because its the SAME computer. I did authorize the computer and transfered all of the bought songs to my library, but I have a lot of songs from CDs.
Is there a way to keep the songs on my ipod and still purchase or add new songs to it? OR is there a way to save the non bought songs before ersing and synching? I am hoping that I do not have to erase the contents.

I have exactly this problem too! I had my pod happily set up but them had to reformat my computer due to a technical problem. I also changed email address in the process. Now, I can't transfer my purchases or tracks from CD - it will only let me erase and sync. Any ideas anyone, this is incredibly frustrating!Sh

  • Need help re-synching iPods with new computer and getting iTunes to...

Need help re-synching iPods with new computer and getting iTunes to recognize our iPods (it doesn't even recognize them when they're plugged in).
Hubby wiped my harddrive for me, so now I need to get everything back in proper places. I'm using windows XP and installed iTunes once again (I believe it's version 8). I also installed all of my iTunes songs. Now I need to know where to go from here. We have 3 iPods and I need to get them all synched once again. I know how to create different libraries for each of us, but I can't figure out how to get our songs back into our iTunes libraries. When I open iTunes and plug in an iPod, iTunes doesn't even show that an iPod is plugged in.
What do I do now to get each of our iPods synched with our own libraries?
    TIA
    Brandy

Thanks Zevoneer. The "Restart ipod service" worked and itunes is now recognizing my ipod! Hooray!
Okay, now how do I synch all of our ipods with our individual libraries (I don't want all of my kids' songs and vice versa)? We each have hundreds of songs on our ipods that we don't want to lose.
    Thanks again!

  • HT1535 I've lost a very important note on my ipod touch. Most of it should be synched on my computer.  If I synch now, will it delete the note from my computer or restore it on my ipod??  Thanks!

If you properly erased all data on the iPod it would be exactly how it was the day it was bought. You would be instructed yto set up your iPod and to sign into your Apple ID account etc. If this has happened to you, you have properly erased your iPod.

  • Problem synching iPod on new computer

I set up iTunes on a new computer and set up all the podcasts I want to hear on my iPod.  I attached my iPod touch to synch.  The computer gave me a message saying I had attached the iPod to a new computer and did I want to sync.  I responded yes.  It said it was synching, but none of the new podcasts got loaded on the iPod.  What should I do?

Is your iPod configured to sync podcasts from under your iPod's podcasts tab? To check, plug your iPod in and click on its name from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes.  This will bring you to the iPod's Summary tab. Locate the Podcasts configuration tab along the top and select it.  Is there a tick mark next to Sync Podcasts?  If so, what options do you have enabled/selected below that?

  • Since downloading 11.0.1 (12), Itunes can't locate or play many songs but the same songs still play on my synched iPod.

Since downloading Itunes 11.0.1 (12), Itunes can't locate or play many songs but the same songs still play on my synched iPod. I have a MacBook Air, Lion OS, Itunes version 11.0.1 (12).  I didn't see this problem with older versions of Itunes.  I do not manually change the organization of the Itunes library.  I use the Itunes "add to library" feature or Amazon's MP3 downloader.  Sometimes, however, I have changed song information in the "info" window.  Such as unchecking the "compilation" button and sorting by artist (for that song), so that I can search by artist in the top pane of Itunes (otherwise the song is sorted in an album that is a "compilation," but not under the name of the artist who sang a particular song.  I've done this without problem in the past, but perhaps the newer version of Itunes can't handle the changes I made and has lost track of where the older version of Itunes stored such songs?    How do I fix all these older previously ok changes if that's the case...  If I could just find where they are stored in Itunes it would be easier perhaps.  I've looked in compilations, unknown artist, and so forth to no avail.  And Finder search can't find them.
Details: suddenly, many songs are marked with "!," denoting that Itunes cannot find the songs in the library and cannot play them. Oddly, my iPod CAN play the "unlocatable" songs with no problem (it has been synched "post problem").  So the songs are still there somewhere in the Itunes library.  This problem occurs by album, that is, all songs from the same album become unlocatable, although different albums by the same artist may still be found and played.
Exploring the Itunes library to try to locate the missing albums/songs, I discovered that generally there is no longer any folder specified for any artist associated with a missing album [artist is the top level of organization and album is the second; compilations are in the same folder]. This is true even if I have other albums from the same artist which Itunes IS able to locate.  I cannot find a single song/album by such artists anywhere in the Itunes file system, even the ones that Itunes can still play.  If I right click and "get info" for an unlocatable song, I get a notification box that asks if I want to locate the file.  If I click "no," next thing-- the info window for the song pops up, with all the correct info (including sort info, which I double check)!  Why is Itunes able to locate all the info on the song, but is not able to play the MP3 file?
Using Finder I cannot locate the songs that are unlocatable by Itunes (except the original download files in the Amazon MP3 folder).  Finder is, of course, able to find Itunes songs that Itunes has no trouble locating.  What's up?!  My iPod can find them just fine.  I just synched my iPod again and am playing the "unlocatable" songs right now.
I can "fix" most of these files by downloading files one by one into Itunes from my Amazon download folder or from my CDs using the "add to library" feature. In fact, it is strange.  But this will take a very long time!  And what if this problem continues recurring?   But something strange happens when I implement this fix.  I added one song to Itunes (from the Amazon MP3 folder, using "add to library") for one "unlocatable" album of Pete Seegers. After adding that one song, I looked at the Itunes music library and discovered that a folder for Pete Seeger (which was not there before I added the song) had been newly created, or restored.  In this folder was the one song I had just added, but ALSO all my other Seeger albums that had previously remained "locatable" by Itunes.  But the other "unlocatable" songs were not restored, unfortunately.

I have found a workaround. When I create a new playlist, iTunes allows me to add or remove songs from existing playlists for a short while. Then, for some reason it prevents me from adding and deleting songs again. Not sure why. Go figure.

  • Tying to synch iPod touch

Does anyone know how to synch iCal on my macbook pro with the calendar on my iPod touch... I have followed about 20 different step by step guides and everytime I think I must have sorted it, it fails... Everything else seems to work seemlessly with hardly any IT skills needed, but this reminds of the old days when you needed to be an IT expert to set up an email account.
Also I can't set up an iCloud clendar on my powerbook - do I need to upgrade to Lion for that?
    Going nuts here

Actually, we also plugged in our ipod Nano, and all the songs on it were uploaded onto the new itunes library and had no problem with the Nano.  However, when it came to the ipod touch, well, as you can see we've had issues.  I didn't want to have to restore the device if not needed.  It sounds like we need to synch ipod touch with our original PC itunes library.  Thanks IIIaass!

  • My keyboard is not synching with the computer

My keyboard is not synching with my computer so when i turn it on and asking me to enter a password i cannot type anything in..any suggestions>

Have you tried to manually turn it on on the right side?
If that does not work, then it simply isn't being recognized by the computer and you will need to borrow any kind of USB keyboard from a neighbor to get past the password and into the Bluetooth Setup Assistant (top right menu under bluetooth) to set up yours.

  • HT1212 What is the IPad was not synched to a computer and is disabled?

We had a student that entered a passcode incorrectly and disabled the iPad. However, this iPad was set-up through wi-fi and was not synched to a computer. How do we re=enable the iPad?

You will still need to connect it to a computer's iTunes - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
You may need to put the iPad into recovery mode in order to reset/unlock it : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808

    hi cengl!
let's try heading to the itunes and ipod software download pages and downloading the update from there:
    iTunes 6.0.1.3 Installer
    Ipod Updater Installer
i notice that you're running McAfee. if you run into an odd problem where you can't see the download controls (there's a blank blue box on the itunes download page, for example), try:

  • Synching iPod Locks Up iTunes

I'm using iTunes 9.11, and whenever I connect my ipod, iTunes appears to start to synch (the iPod shows up in iTunes and says synching iPod, do not connect). Then almost immediately, iTunes gives me the spinning beach ball.
I reset my iPod, and it still does this. The only way out is to force quit out of iTunes.
I'm not sure this is relevant, but I recently changed my Apple ID to reflect a new email address. I'm not sure if that helps, but that's something that is "different" from before.
    Thanks for all input.

    Hello eightfifteen,
Try reformatting the iPod using *Disk Utility* and then restore via iTunes. Here are instructions if need be.

Or if possible, try restoring the iPod on another system to see if that does any good.

  • My BB Curve won't synch with my computer anymore.

My BB Curve won't synch with my computer anymore. Seems like it happened when I downloaded the new version of BB Desktop software a few weeks ago. I need some help, please.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    I suggest this thread:

It starts with a process for cleanly starting over, and there is some discussion, and there is also a post (15) with links to older Desktop Software versions, if those are needed. Note that this is not, by any means, guaranteed to work...but it has worked for many to resolve issues they are having.
    Good luck!
